The chain was probably used to stop people from stealing the fuel. Just padlock the chain back to the support structure the tank was mounted to and the valve cannot be operated.
@creamysbrianna
@creamysbrianna 2 года назад
Use a metal LOTO device for a valve it works a lot better.
@jdelbrid
@jdelbrid 2 года назад
They make industrial valves that have built-in locking capability. Close the valve, slide the locking mechanism and install the lock. Comtromics makes one that locks in the open or closed positions. LOTO devices hang from the valve and are quote easily broken or cut.

When you set it up, redo the vent with a small P-Trap and stick diesel in the trap. This will allow your tank to vent, but not suck in the moisture at night when the tank and its contents cools down drawing air back inside. This also reduces the chances of rust and algae growth, because there is no direct vent to oxygen.

Glad to see it's not just me. So many times I've started a project, only to have something not work (battery) which leads to fixing that issue, which usually leads to fixing another issue, which leads to having to organize something, or replace something, but that one part isn't around, so you have to make something to hold you over, or head to town, and in the end the main project gets pushed to another day. A man could get jealous of another man with so many "toys'", but once you realize how much maintenance goes into each one...that feeling passes! I truly appreciate/admire the life you've acheived for you and your family.

The chain is to earth the tank to prevent the possibility of static electricity, which can cause a spark when re-fueling an object. This is important, especially when the support structure of the tank is wood.
@disgruntledbear2764

on metal drum storage, no matter how much you tighten the bung, it will pull in small burps of air and release them during temperature swings , usually day and night. If they didn't they could over pressure. The best way to store drums outside and prevent water from being pulled into them is to keep that water from collecting around the bungs by covering the drums with something or tilting them slightly with the bung at a 9 and 3 position.

Diesel fuel breaks down if it's sitting in an outdoor fuel tank, experiencing varying hot and cold temperature cycles. With a partially filled tank, algae quickly grows over just one winter. Algae in diesel fuel produces acids that gradually skew the fuel's pH towards an acidic environment. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, so adding acid to the fuel will decrease the pH number. A fuel pH of less than 5.8 indicates a serious problem and is strong evidence that there's a microbe problem going on in the tank. Keep the tank full and use a good stabilizer like Sat-Bil Diesel Fuel Stabilizer. I paid a small fortune to "polish" the two 500-gallon diesel tanks on my 39' trawler because I did not know better.
@ArkansasPilgrim
@ArkansasPilgrim 2 года назад
My dad told me that, if a barrel was going to be outside, you tilt it up on a 2x4 with the bungs at the sides so water won't cover either one of them. When the sun shines on the barrel, it will heat up and push air out the bungs, even if they are tight. When it cools off, the lower pressure inside will suck air back in. If the bung is under water, it will suck water in. At some point, the barrel will be full, and it will start pushing the contents out when it gets hot. Since water will sink to the bottom, oil or fuel will be spilled.

You should really have fork stops on that carriage. Fork lock pins are designed to shear if there is too much load, such as picking up a giant cylinder from one end. The threaded holes in the sides of the carriage are either for attaching a load back rest, or for fork stops. A hex bolt and thick fender washer will work fine. It is not uncommon for forks to slide completely off the carriage, which could tip the lift and WILL throw the load.

Put a little piece of 2x4 under one side of the barrel. That'll help with rain water as well.

Put a block of wood under the waste oil barrel so the barrel tips and the opening is on the high end. This will keep water out of the barrel.
