My Engine is about to BURST! Volvo Redblock PCV System

Checking the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system on the Redblock B230 engine and replacing the oil separator box due to too much pressure inside the engine. This one still failed the glove test even with a clean system, so further checks needed...
At the moment Involvo'd is funded by ad revenue, some very generous Patrons and a dishwashing/delivery job. If you want to support the channel (and get some perks, ie early access to videos, behind the scenes pictures etc, here's a link;

I was told by older Volvo mechanics not to remove it because it often breaks the pipe on the pvc box that goes down to the oil pan. They recommended using engine degreaser or brake cleaner real good, then let it sit a bit and then do an oil change.
@travisfoltz517

Next thing I would check is the small diameter hose (that attaches to side of flame trap) for clogs and the threaded nipple that it connects to on the manifold. Hold onto your old breather box (for spare) and see if you can soak it and clean the internal deposits-a lot of the aftermarket boxes leak at the midpoint seam. Looking forward to see how this turns out.

1:47 The 1989 244 I once owned had a lot of blow-by. When the PCV system plugged up unbeknownst to me the pressure got so high the engine pushed out both the front main and intermediate shaft seals. I guess in hindsight it was fortunate the rear main didn't get pushed out, that would have been much more problematic. Anyway; I still needed to drive (thankfully very short) to work so for 4 days I put quart after quart of engine oil in as I obtained seals, a timing belt and almost every part of the PCV system right down to each hose. I have the same Makita light, very handy.

i cracked the bottom of my oil pan a while back while parking, patched it up with some of that metal/glue epoxy stuff that bonds to metal, leak eventually came back so I reapplied it again but this time spent a little more time filing down the surface to get better adhesion, about 3 months later it was leaking again turns out i have positive pressure in the crankcase which is why it keeps failing - it probably saved my engine before replacing the pan i'll have to replace the pcv and clean/replace the hoses that connect as well as clean out the oil pickup and i believe there is also a channel from the base of the engine that feeds the pcv which easily gets blocked - not sure if the red is similar but perhaps that's why your repair hasn't turned out as expected

It seems a bit worn engine. Breathing out some combustion air from top or bottom, or both like valve sealing surfaces, valve guides, piston/cylinder sides, piston rings. Cheapest try could be some diesel flush as a motor oil, could release some build up on the piston rings and make it seal better. However that is not the worst blow by I have seen.

Bought a new housing and after connecting everything properly my crankcase pressure went from positive to negative. I think your high crank pressure might be due to rings sticking due to naff oil being used!!! One thing to be really careful of is the oil you use in a turbo engine, as the turbo is exhaust driven the heat build up is massive, if anyone just turns the engine off after a blast the oil 'cooks' in the turbo and restricts the oil drain. The oil drain restriction causes the flow to decrease and eventually kills the turbo. Synthetic oils can stand the high temps in turbos so much better. Don't even look at semi synthetics as they are just mineral with a splash of synthetic - just marketing bull. Hopefully high crank pressure is due to ventilation system not stuck rings! Good Luck.

IMO the blowby is actually not too bad. I mean, i have seen way worse. All engines have SOME blowby. You now know for a fact that the PCV system is OK. Now just run it. Also, to be fair you would have to test the blowby at full operating temp because only then will all parts (block, pistons, rings) have expanded fully due to heat.

@Involvod
@Involvod 2 года назад
This stuff is mineral, semi synthetic would be better, but there's a bit of a question as to how "synthetic" a semi oil is, because there's no requirement on how much it has to be, it can be just a drop, a quick Google search said it could be 5-10% I'm sure that premium brand oils will be a good portion synthetic, but this oil I use is €20 a can which is great value for a premium oil, the redblocks seem to love it, so I just stick with it. I'll probably find some decent fully synthetic oil to go into the 940 turbo though when I do the head gasket.

Maybe in the meantime you just got it fixed. If not I have figured out some interesting details. Below the oil seperator box there is a hose going down to the oil reservoir. On my Volvo 240 this hose is nearly full of debree too. In this video someone refurbish a motor and you can see clearly where this hose is sitting. Maybe you have to clean this hose too? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GIVhKtua8s4.htmlsi=dFDAWF3qalB8omQQ&t=1892 And in this video is a short sequence where you can see inside this black box. If there is any fluid to lose all the debree it should be possible to clean the box instead of buying a new one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0YDoLSj5n5k.htmlsi=dTk9BwOClSvo_pji&t=126

Does the pressure arise from exhaust valve leak-by ?
@Involvod
@Involvod 2 года назад
Yeah it could be, or maybe past the piston rings etc, I need to do some tests 😏

@@danielebbeling4056 thanks! Just realised I made a mistake though, the pressure in the crankcase must be from blow by past the piston/rings, but exhaust valve leak by would definitely cause a loss in compression
