Hope everyone is having a nice weekend!!! Thanks for being here. Just wanted to give a heads up....I've mentioned Steve's Leaves a few times in this video. They sell amazing plants, including LOTS of Begonias. If you sign up for their emails, they send out weekly ads with discount codes. This week just so happens to be for BEGONIAS!!!! I'll include the coupon code here BEGONIAS20 for 20% off all Begonias. I am in no way affiliated with this company...I just LOVE to order plants from them. And full disclosure....I may have bought 4 more Begonias on Friday LOL. This is how I have so many...this is the exact reason why I have so many LOL. Should I do an unboxing of the new Begonias???? Let me know :).
As someone with around 400 hundred different species of Begonia alone , it's been the one family I've consistently been drawn to. There's just so much variety... it really is unmatched , & the variety just continues to grow with new varieties or species being found in the wild or having entirely new creations through hybrids. There's genuinely something for everyone if you look around. But it's also an extremely collector friendly plant. There usually really cheap i you start from plugs & for the most part, they are easy to grow & handle , AND to propagate! But there's also that more underground market , with very limited run hybrids & the rare forms. Things that you'll just never see in any garden centre.. But they are just the most eye-catching plants , in my personal opinion. A few great ones for starters , ANY Bewitched varieties , they have some really amazing growth habits , & look amazing with dark & sharp Reds & pinks with contrasting blacks or browns , dark greens & reds ! & are super inexpensive, even when buying a mature specimen. The Rex & King Rex hybrids are ALLLLLLL worth looking at. They can be abit harder to care for , and definitely have an enclosed environment if you live in colder climates. But because there's just so much variety & drastic changes in colour or forms & patterns. The Rex family is a very good place to look for those reasons. Angel wing varieties, they are super easy to grow , can grow REALLLLLY LARGE & are super eyecatching plants when kept well , & there ridiculously easy to keep well 😂 Any 'Non Stop' flowering varieties. These are actually outside plants , & usually have very bland colour foliage.. but nice looking cut leaves though , and they have excellent flowers!! & are usually super inexpensive aswell , you can usually get bundles of 10/15 plugs for around £10 here in the UK.
Oh thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on Begonias!!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Wow...400!!!! That is something I would love to see in person!!! I agree so much with everything you said about this genus. With regard to the rex variety, it was never a favorite of mine in the past because I struggled (dry cold climate). Since I now have them in a greenhouse environment...wholly moly!!!! They are incredibly impressive to me. Doing so well and the colors POPPING!!!! They are way up there on my favorite variety of Begonia now. I don't think I have any "bewitched". Might have to look into adding at least one to my collection. I love the shape of the leaves and color contrasts. Again, thanks for sharing!!!! I feel like I need to do an update on my Barrina greenhouse shelving unit again because things have changed so much. The Begonias have settled in since this video and I've since added a humidifier as well. The change is pretty impressive with those plants :)
Hi, I’m from Sydney Australia and am loving your beautiful begonias. Most of my begonias are outside, I live in a temperate climate with cool winters and hot summers (sometimes dry, sometimes humid).
Now i want to start a begonia collection 👀 the begonia rex escargot swirls remind me of tim burton 😅 that is now my wishlst plant. Thank you for sharing your collection 🥹❤️
You should do it...I think everyone should at least give them a try. The escargot is fantastic! I've read it is difficult, so keep that in mind. I haven't found that to be the case for me so far. I find them all so beautiful and rewarding. Thanks for watching :).
Your Begonia are absolutely beautiful!! I couldn't wait for you to do a Begonia collection video!! I actually recently ordered 2 from your shop, the Sinbad and Manaus and they both are so beautiful!! I will be doing my own Begonia Collection video on my plant channel in a couple of weeks and I will show off the ones I from your shop!! I hope I can keep them alive until then!!🤣🤣 They are doing great so far! I hope to order more from your shop😊
Oh cool!!! Thanks for placing an order. Both of those begonias are super easy so they should do just fine for you. I will have to check out your plant channel 😊.
Soooo many and so beautiful!! I got a few little ones and just don’t what to repot them in 🤷🏽♀️ I’m overthinking it but they are so cute! Thanks for sharing your collection 💚🌱
Thank you!!!! Begonias aren't my favorite to repot just because their roots are so fine. But they always do great when I repot so really there isn't anything to worry about. Thank you again :).
At first i wasn't going to watch this since i have no begonias in my house. But i do have a annual red one with dark green leaves in a hanging basket on my front porch. It is so beautiful and easy to keep. And its not messy like my mini petunia basket. I was wondering if you ever did a video when you setup your terrarium? I have a 20 gallon long fish tank that I moved my last fish to a smaller tank and was thinking i would turn it into a terrarium. Then I could have a some terrarium begonias. I would also love a unboxing of your new ones coming your way. It is so addicting but brings me such joy, and more work but I don't care😂. Have a wonderful week.
Hi, Paula! I did do a total setup video for my aquarium terrarium. I'll link it here. Thank you so much and I hope you have a wonderful week as well :). terrarium build video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T86Y_VCpycs.htmlsi=VkZi2pbwVJXh1-3t
I love begonias. I have them in room humidity and in a terrarium. Some of mine took close to a year to acclimate outside of the terrarium, but those that do grow splendidly. I also have that weird green grassy stuff in my terrarium. It just started growing from the spagnum moss. I have no idea what it is either. Your collection is the best of what I have seen on utube.
Hi, Kristie! I have a few in the cabinets that I wouldn't mind moving to ambient conditions again. But there are some that no way would I ever even try it. I'm so looking forward to the point where the plants in my barrina greenhouse have settled in/acclimated....I don't think it will be much longer :). I know the grass you are talking about that grows from sphagnum moss. I never considered that this is what that is. This one is so thick and rigid compared to what comes out of the moss...but maybe it's just very mature. I typically pull the moss grass right away and it just feels like delicate grass. Thank you so much!!!! :)
Another fantastic video thank you so much we have five begonias in common True Love Rocks I bought because of you the Dorian Gray and the MO Reese I am ever grateful they are both wonderful begonias the Cactus Club in Charlotte North Carolina has a lot of Harmony begonias play Chef beautiful plants we are both decided that you get some gorgeous pots thrifting😊😊😊
Hi, Lynn! Thank you so much!!!! So glad that you also have enjoyed some of the plants that I enjoy. Thank you both!!! I haven't had much luck recently finding pots. Maybe today I'll find something :). Have a great week!!!! :)
I do love the Burkillii❤🎉I am just addicted to the black leaved Angle Wings from Harmony. Love the ‘Dark Horse’ and ‘Fangtastic’, but I am waiting on a sale. $50 is a bit steep for a begonia. Escargot looks like a the Cat in the Hat cartoon. Beautiful. Begonia peridot is pronounced Pear-rih-dote, like tote. U489 is stunning.
Hi, Paul! I will check those out! Yeah...$50 is steep. There are some variegated ones I'd like to have but not for the $$$ price tag LOL. I'll wait for the price to come down. Thanks for the pronunciation tip :). Have a great Sunday!!!
Love love love begonias! The foliage is amazing because of the colors and patterns and textures...very very tactile... I saw them the first time in a little variety store here in Toronto Canada, I bought all the different 8 4inch pots as I have read about these amazing begonias in my gardening magazines....sadly they are not created equal, but 2 of them still alive and just in a medium light east facing window for more than 8 yrs now...just water weekly fertilize once a month...the others slowly declined one by one and died...but I'm glad I have experienced them ....sometimes you cannot go away for an expensive vacay, getting these plants is a cheaper way to get an exotic experience, and it makes me happy everyday❤
Love this video so much ❤️ jovian is black (ish). And the fireflies one is called that because of the flowers that shoot straight up (I'm pretty sure it is yellow flowers). Check the photo in Steve's Leaves and you'll see 👀 🖤💛
Hi, Aubrey!!!! Thank you!!! I looked and you are exactly right. It gets yellow flowers, which is a rarity for Begonia, and they look like fireflies blooming above the black foliage. Very cool :).
@@ThePinkTrellis that's right! I had read that a while back and was very interested in getting that one but sold out so fast. I just got micro mo on their last drop, I'm excited to see how small the leaves are
Hi Gina. My phone needs charging. But I be back to watching this, lol. I love all your begonia. The ice begonia is my favorite. & the polkadot pink. 😅❤. But they are all beautiful 😍. I know about the humidity. My master bathroom is huge size of a bedroom so I keep all my high humidity plants their. Lol looks like jungle. 😅. But also some in my bedroom & outside not all begonia but all kinds of plants.
@ThePinkTrellis Good morning. Yes, it is. I am getting a cabinet for Christmas 🎄 this year. So that probably will help as well. My bathroom has sunroof, so it helps. Then, when I take a shower, the humidity goes up.. it gets cold in Virginia in winter, so the cabinet will help for sure. 👍❤️😆.
Hello!!!! Yes...seems the easiest way to keep them and keep them happy is in a cabinet, terrarium, grow tent...anywhere you can keep the humidity high...unless your indoor humidity is on the higher side to begin with. Mine is not :). Have a great time in Greece!!!! Sounds fun :).
Awesome! Thank you so much!!!!! In case you need to add more Begonia to your collection...Steve's Leaves is having a sale right now :). I purchased 4 more LOL.
I'm sorry to hear that! I keep mine in the cabinet and it seems to do well in there. I've never tried it in ambient conditions. Not sure how you are keeping yours but if it's in ambient conditions, try moving it to higher humidity. If you decide to hang onto it, I hope it turns itself around for you :).
Hi! Would you consider doing a video on how you use Azamax and SNS203 for pest prevention. I'd be very interested in knowing more about the concentration, application method, frequency, etc. that you use.
Thank you!!! I fertilize them the same as the rest of my houseplants. Every other week I add some liquid fertilizer to the water. Sending success vibes!!! :)
Hi Gena! Love your begonia collection! They do so well with you! I have a maculata wighiti and from Steve’s Leaves a melanobullata and a looking glass begonia (a beautiful one you should check out). Brevirimosa and paulensis are going on my wishlist. I recently found thrips on a few plants, went to order more Azamax, and was disappointed Amazon only had the 16 ounce size at a very expensive price. Do you find the SNS-209 effective?
Hi, Cheryl! I'll definitely check out the looking glass. Going to write that one down so I don't forget. Amazon has been out of the smaller size for awhile now. I ended up buying some off of eBay. It works the best for me because it also will take out springtails. I get a lot of springtails because they love the moisture of the grow tent. That stuff is magic in a bottle LOL. So I've only tried the SNS 203 because that one is marketed as a soil drench. I think the 209 is for spraying. The 203 works on fungus gnats. The bottle says it works on thrips, but knock on wood, I haven't had any issues with thrips recently so I don't know if it works. I don't see anything about spider mites though which is the only pest, besides fungus gnats, that I've seen recently. I've only been using the 203 for a few weeks now. I'll have to report back on my results with it. It is definitely working for fungus gnat larvae...it does not work on springtails. Luckily springtails are good guys...but they too can get out of hand, so I try to do some control on them. Thanks :).
Great video Gena. Dang, right out the gate with a beast👏🪴 It's great that you stress that the care tips will differ from person to person. Happy Sunday and thanks for sharing🌄
Thanks so much!!! yeah...I always want to include that disclaimer. There are so many variables with plants and care. I don't mind giving general care suggestions, but what works for me might not work for someone else. I hope you had a lovely Sunday :).
