Most of my Classics are the Penguin Classics as the introductions are really good and schools and Universities recommend them for studying as when you open the book, they stay open.
RU-vidrs usually only show their perfect collections so thank you for showing all copies you own from different publishers. A lot of classics I own are Wordsworth Editions and Dover Thrift Editions because I bought them while broke, but I hope to collect nice copies of my favourites whenever I can.
Omg agree! I'm so sick of seeing people's glossy hardbacks, I want more collections with battered secondhand books with the covers falling off please (aka part of my collection).
that edition of emma is GORGEOUS. same goes for wuthering heights and a portrait of the artist as a young man. also every other book. i’m dead jealous.
I haven't read it BUT it's my Mum's favourite book and I actually bought her that copy of the book for her birthday and you're right, it is so beautiful!
Ciara Foster awe how lovely! Well if you love Little Women you’ll definitely love Anne, it was heavily inspired by little women so you’ll see a lot of similarities in the stories
Just wanted to pop in say that this is my favorite video from your channel and its so cozy and oddly satisfying to watch. you kindled the love for classics in me. I got the courage to pick some this year and definitely planning to continue to grow my collection. Sending you tones of love from India. And your Christmas contents are the best!!!!
I don't have many physical classics, just a cubed shelf amount. Just getting back into classics now with reading Pride and Prejudice. I do have quite a lot of them on my Kindle Paperwhite as I got a lot of them for free. 🙂📚
I didn't like most of the covers and then when you showed the one at 13:59 I realized that I like old copies more! With covers having actual paintings rather than graphic designs. So beautiful 😍😍
The Great Gatsby is one of my all time favorites too! I have the exact same original edition of it. Also, I’m blown away by your classics collection! I aspire to have one just like it :)
Don kee-HO-tay by mee-gyehl ser-von-tays is kinda how you pronounce it, I studied it when I was abroad in Spain in the city where Cervantes was incarcerated where he wrote the book! 😊 hope that helps!
The Penguin Clothbound Classics are definitely my favorite editions! I love the cover art! And they're nice and soft and comfortable to hold. I can't stop buying books from that collection😂
I bought a few of these books in this edition. Unfortunately, I feel that these books are meant for display and not really to read. Even though they are supposed to last, I opened a few of these books to read and the spines broke and the covers started fraying and became discoloured. I had to get rid of them. Huge disappointment when you consider the price that they are. I prefer the Arcturus Classics. Beautiful covers and readable... Sad that I had to go for cheaper books over an expensive group of books that were supposed to last for a long time.
@@TiffWaffles Yeah, unfortunately I've had some experiences like that too. Mine have never fallen apart, but the design on the cover does rub off and fade.
@@HopeMariah03 The library in my town has a few of these Penguin Cloth bound editions and they had to do something to prevent the books from doing this as well as breaking. They had to reinforce the binding and put some kind of plastic wrap around the cover just to protect them and to keep their designs.
You absolutely have to read the Count of Monte Cristo. It's one that I NEVER regretted reading and I do want to read it again when my kids are grown up.
The Count of Monte Christo - Alexandre Dumas is such a great book! Currently reading it and can't put it down. Maybe you want to try the first chapter and maybe like you'll be hooked :)
You have such a lovely collection. I have quite a few of the same ones either already on my shelves or on my wishlist. I also have that same white and gold copy of The Great Gatsby that I picked up from Shakespeare & co about 5 years ago. It’s one of my favorite books just because of the memories associated with that trip.
Oh no 😂 it's the only classic book I read in school so far that I loved!!! I guess people have different tastes... I know a lot of people at my school disliked it. The great gatsby, however, was not my favorite thing. It was really boring up til the final chapters. I respect the book and I definitely liked analyzing and working with the text and I definitely appreciated the symbolism... But I only enjoyed the great gatsby after I read it-- not while I was reading it.
I hope you get to Crime and Punishment soon! Also: I absolutely LOVE that edition you own-it’s such an aesthetic. I personally read the Bantam translation and it was...a very transformative experience. Easy 5 stars; I got so emotional at the end. 😰🤗
Beautiful collection! I looove classics! I think I have about 90-100 and the authors I have all of their works are Jane Austen (two sets of those), Leo Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf (which are my favourites). I also have two of The Great Gatsby and Lolita and honestly, you can't never go wrong with buying classics 🤗
Yes! I love collection videos!! It's amazing how many books you were able to talk about and still have such a concise video! I just counted how many classics I have: 116, but that does include some duplicates. I just counted the number of physical books on my classics shelves. Although, I recently placed a book order, so there are more to come! Some of my favorites that you have are also books you've read: The Bell Jar (my favorite book), Rebecca, Anna Karenina, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dracula, and The Catcher In The Rye. A Tale of Two Cities I don't consider a favorite but I think it's such a well constructed book! I also don't consider The Great Gatsby a favorite but I love Fitzgerald's writing and all the analysis and discussion that can come from it. Of the Austen novels I've read, Mansfield Park is my favorite and I love Fanny Price! I've read Far From The Madding Crowd and didn't hate it, but didn't love it. I DO however love the 2015 adaptation of it! I highly recommend watching it. And even though I thought the book was just good, I still want to read more work by Hardy, specifically Tess of the D'Urbervilles. I haven't read The Talented Mr. Ripley, but my favorite film is based on it, and I've been meaning to get it and read it. My favorite film a French film called Plein Soleil and is also known as Purple Noon. So, yeah, it's based on The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I actually didn't know going into watching it. I just finished reading The Haunting of Hill House a couple weeks ago, as well as finished a re-read of We Have Always Lived In The Castle! I prefer Haunting over Castle, but it made me realize how much I really like Jackson's writing, and I'm now expecting copies of The Lottery and Other Stories and The Bird's Nest in the mail soon. A classic I recommend to you is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. It's one of my favorites! The new Rebecca adaptation is expected to release this year. I'm pretty sure it's in post-production now and is supposed to be released on Netflix. But no release date, yet.
Collection videos are so much fun, I'm so glad you enjoyed this one! Wow, what an extensive collection, that's amazing! I'm glad we share some favourites too! It's really interesting to hear that Mansfield Park is your favourite, I've now read Sense & Sensibility meaning Mansfield Park is the only one I still need to read so I'm excited to read it soon! The reason I want to read Far From The Madding Crowd soon is so that I can watch the movie as I love Carey Mulligan! Interestingly I preferred We Have Always Lived in the Castle over Hill House, but I did really enjoy both! I'll definitely check out that Steinbeck book, thanks for the recommendation! And I'm so excited for the Rebecca adaptation so hopefully it will be out soonish (it would be a perfect late summer release)!
@@ciarascorner I agree- Rebecca would be a perfect late summer release! And I also love Carey Mulligan; she is one of my favorite actresses! Yeah, that adaptation is stunning, in my opinion! And very well-done overall. I enjoyed _reading_ Hill House more than Castle, but I watched the adaptation of Castle from a couple years ago and I almost think I like the adaptation more than the book, and now both stories are pretty even with each other. Well, I hope you enjoy Mansfield Park! You should do some sort of discussion or ranking video afterwards talking about all the Austen novels. Or something like that :)
I would love to start reading classic books again. I tried to read once a long time ago and it was written in an old English language. As a non-native English speaker, it was so difficult to understand so I returned it. A few months ago I started reading Little House on the Prairie bc I love the era in that time and I love it. Easy to understand without constantly flipping my dictionary and yes I still use it lol. Which ones do you think are easier to read especially for those of us whose English isn't their first language?
I know this video is already 4 months old but Alice's adventures in Wonderland and through the looking glass are absolutely amazing. I just read them a few a few weeks ago. Definitely recommend for people who are just starting to read classics. Especially if Englisch ist not your first language
Just a quick note. You may need to be from the United States to enjoy Huckleberry Finn, and Mark Twain in general. The same may be said about The Scarlett Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. (I don't mean this to sound rude.) Anyway, it's been a very long time since I've read these American classics so thanks for the reminder! And two thumbs up for the Russian classics. They are worth the effort, it may sometimes seem, to get through them. I've subscribed. Edited to add that 13:40 made me extremely happy. Reading the exact same book your mother read is incredibly satisfying to me. 🥰
so this is the first time I watch this video so far and I added so many books to my tbr so I don't know wheter that's good for my student economy or not but I'm just so excited about give it the ones I already own a go asap. Greattt video 🔮
Aw, yeah it is lucky to have access to big bookstores! I’d recommend checking out book depository as they ship internationally and have lots of cover options!
We disagree on Heart of Darkness - of everything I've read at university so far it's been my absolutely favourite. I love that book. And Jay is right - the Odyssey is 10 times better than the Iliad. It was the first thing we had to read on my English course. They threw us in at the deep end.
I love classics and love your collection! Regarding "Rebecca", there is a movie adaptation released in 1940, which I like very much. An oldie but a goldie. :)
The In Bloom series designer owns Rifle Paper Co. There's also a version of Alice In Wonderland, but it's much bigger and has a dust jacket along with a designed hardcover. There's also AIW wallpaper she designed on her website.
Lady Audley’s secret is my favourite classic!! Lady Audley is such a sassy character. It’s been a long time since I’ve read it but I’d almost describe it as something similar to Gone Girl aha
The upcoming film adaptation of Rebecca is actually a remake, the original is from 1940 directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He also directed the film version of The Birds
I read The Count of Monte Cristo when I was about 9 or 10, and I loved it! As an adult, I'm just finding out what an important place it has in the literature history, and definitely planning to read it again!
I remember I had to read The Heart of Darkness for my last year of high school and then again during my second year of college... I don't think it will ever grow on me.
I did a quick count and I have around 128 classics on my shelf and a few too many of them are unread for my liking! I love those deluxe classics editions- I think I’ll need to add a few to my collection. Great video ✨
oooh wow - that's such a good collection! I totally agree though, I have a lot of work to do because so many of mine are unread! Definitely recommend the Deluxe Classics, they're all so individual but so beautiful!
WOW!! That's a huge collection. Absolutely love it. I totally feel you with regards to buying different versions of the same book because I saw the version of Master and The Margarita and my heart exploded!!! 🤭😂
hahaahah, I'm very proud of my huge collection!! hahaha, you should definitely get that version of Master and Margarita because it's beautiful and In my opinion, you can never have too many beautiful books especially when they're favourites!
Have you ever read Girl With a Pearl Earring? As of now it’s the best book I’ve ever read. I most definitely have not read as many books as you but it’s a beautifully visual book to read.
I am sooooo happy for this video !!! I also have many books of the same Book 😅 I am glad to see i am not the only one !!! I love Jane Austen so much and i have so many of her books from differents collections 😅
Hello! I really liked your video and your choices! I am Portuguese but I have a taste for English literature - especially Victorian - and have (almost) every book you mention in English. I still have a preference for Penguin books but in the past I mostly ended up buying those horrible wordsworth classics with awful looking covers because..mcheap! I too am a big fan of Frankenstein but I beg to differ, that is not the most fabulous cover of The Portrait Of Dorian Gray because I happen to have it, it's a portuguese version with the beautiful Oscar Wilde on its cover hahaha! I swear it's quite the ethereal beauty! I really enjoyed your video!
"I am the Cheese" by Robert Cormier is a children's book as well, but it is beyond disturbing. I do plan to re-read it though. 😃 There is something about worn, dogeared, marked up books that I find attractive. "Don Key-hO-tAy' by Cervantes. 😃
Don Quijote definitely cracked me up. :D I had to read that in Spanish when I was learning Spanish in school. Don't remember much, though. I think the j-sound is something that doesn't really exist in English. It's like in José - the name. That weird coughing sound. The i is like in see - long ee-sound. The o is short as in cough. And the e is short but similar to the sound in tan. xD Wow, that's actually really difficult. :D I am currently reading Brave New World and so far I am really disgusted by the racism and sexism in it. Thought about DNFing it...
hahahah thank you, that's actually a really good explanation of how to say a REALLY difficult to pronounce word! I've never studied Spanish, only French and German so Spanish pronunciations are not my forte! And ooh, that's interesting to hear about Brave New World, I personally took those elements as being more reflective of the whole dystopian universe!
