Love the variety of canteens. Collecting canteens and helmets are by far my favorite among the militaria world. Keep up the great work love the vids as always.
I recently bought a German pin. It has a totenkopf with a dagger through the center of the skull. Do you know what it was awarded for? EDIT: So it turns out, the pin isn't even a real thing. It's actually a fantasy roleplaying pin from Britain in the 60s-70s.
Nice for sure, but you didn't see mine ! Something like a dozen of French canteens from 1877 to 1951, all with their cover and sling, two German from WW1 and WW2, an Italian from WW2, a British from WW2, one US from WW1 with two covers (one olive drab, brand new dated 1918 and one pea green with an artillery regiment stencil), two WW2 US (including one mounted troops and one used by the chinese KMT army), one WW2 japanese with a tag bearing the name and address of the soldier, and four WW2 chinese (including a japanese captured and modified, and the most strange of all, a composite US-japanese canteen made of a M 1910 US canteen with a japanese web frame). I should made a small film too... wait, why not ?
Nice ! A pity your two french m 1877 have lost their cover... I love how you describe the color of the soviet canteen, here in France we call it "goose shit green" ! Just two precisions about your french canteens if I may : the small one contains ONE litre, not half a litre, the big one contains two litres, a world record I think (compare with the german canteen and its 0,7 litre...). Both were adopted in 1877, the difference being the small one was used in mainland France and the big in Africa (I think you guessed why). The small one was the only one used during the first months of WW1, but from 1915 on, the big one was given to all the foot troops fighting in Europe (mounted troops had a specific model). Many soldiers carried two 2 litres canteens, one for water, one for wine mixed with water, not to mention captured german canteens, very appreciated to carry strong alcohol... the big one was still used during WW2 with a new khaki cover, but it is by no means typical from WW2, as a new model, with a single neck, and still containing two litres, was introduced in 1935. Maybe you'll find one someday, it was used throughout the war and even during the Indochina war
Awesome collection man, I have 23 canteens in my collection and most are US. For my US canteen collection I have 4 WW1 canteens, 8 WW2 canteens, 1 Korean War canteen and 2 Vietnam canteens.
I have an American canteen, about the same condition as their best condition one, with the cup and canteen dated 1918, the cover date number is hard to distinguish either 1940s or 1918, but it looks like a 1941 cover, but where is the best place to sell it?
On the British 1937 pattern carriers, the Skeleton carriers were issued Pre and early WW2 and again Post WW2, the sleeve pattern carriers were made for ease of WW2 manufacture. These come in two lengths three quarter and full length. Not to be confused with the mostly pre war, but often seen dated 1940, Cavalry pattern carriers. I think you would find the mostly post WW2 copies / interpretations of US 1910 Canteens and covers interesting to collect. Britsh 1944 pattern, used in Malaya, Aden and by some ANZAC troops in Vietnam. Favoured by the British Paras and SAS. Some interesting French, US Canteens used with French made covers, First ones belt loops too small for belts ! Then own Canteen design, Late 1st Indochina war.Larger 1.2 Litre Canteen Cover with new strap and 1910 hook for Algeria etc. Dutch, Belgian, Austrian and Norwegian takes on US 1910 Canteens and covers interesting subject too.
23:26 I've heard that type of canteen carrier was popular in the north African campaign because it hid the green wool which stood out. canteens are quite an interesting collecting subject.
