I feel like I have really learned that I have to buy plants because I like them and not because it is the hip cool thing in the community because I won't take care of it otherwise 😂 It has really helped reduce the feeling that I've got to "catch 'em all"!
YES! exactly lol. Sometimes I feel like I do well and then that urge to buy hits or the feeling I will regret not getting it the next day 😩 I think if I didn't buy so much during the pandemic I would have a totally different collection now in a way. I was buying SO much just to "have" it.
Hi Melissa, My Name is Will. I would definitely sell all the plants you don't want on ETSY. Heat Pack depending on destination Temp, Wrap , USPS , FEDEX or UPS. $$$$
Melissa, Im very happy to read your response, I watch your vids all the time and you have a designers eye. I have watched a few channels and you are definitely excellent in your presentation, kindness and design. In my generation, we watched Mr. Rogers , Lucy and many departed Actor who have true class. Melissa, you have AAA Class, I always appreciate your presentation and thank you. Whatever your endeavor in the future , I believe you will always succeed , Happy Thanksgiving!!! to you and your family with all respect.
I feel like the ones you feel like you don’t like are the ones I feel Iike I like. Just teasing. All of your plants are great. Just pretend like you are rehabbing some big box plants for your bottom tier ones. I do that for winter projects.
Thank you! I've definitely slacked this summer on my rehabs. I feel bad about it but hoping I can turn some around! I feel like once a plant starts growing better for me I appreciate it a lot more!
Sometimes! Since they are self headers their aerial roots don't grow into it like vining plants. I use some plastic grafting tape around the nodes that are more stubborn to root and it helps to hold in moisture. Keeping the pole moist and increasing humidity can help too!
Great video. I loved everything about it! The boing was cute. I think it's neat how collections really reflect the style of each person. Some of your least faves are on my top must haves and your must haves are not even on my radar. I'm in love with the dark philodendrons right now like the dark lord and bloody Mary.
Thank you so much! haha I had to laugh at myself a little editing it back 😂🫶 I think about that too sometimes! It's so neat to see what everyone else loves and what they don't like anymore!
One of the best collections I have ever seen ! I watch your videos and have learned so much also I am a little jealous. I had a horrible house fire about one month ago and I visit my plants every day. I cleaned the leaves and have hoped for the best. Will not be back in my home until January or. February of 2024. Keep showing us your videos, you do such a good job.
I am so sorry that happened!! 😞 I could not imagine that and I would be so sad about my plants 🥺 You're such a good plant parent for going to do that every day! It definitely shows how much you care for them 🙏
Philodendron Collection. Anda merawat tanamannya sangat baik sehingga semua koleksinya tumbuh subur dan sehat. Banyak juga ternyata jenis tanaman philodenron. Terima kasih 😊👍
I am totally into propagating and selling them. This way you get more space for other beautiful plants.. In the last month or so it seemed like you were a little bit overwhelmed with all the care sometimes :/
I'm definitely still feeling that way! I think pests did a number on me this year as well as all the rot and fungal issues this spring. It was exhausting! Definitely looking forward to downsizing plants and cleaning up my collection a bit!
Earlier today I was thinking about asking you what your favorite philodendron is, because I'm wanting to get another one and I want to put it on a pole. So, this video came at the perfect time. THANK YOU!!! 😊
I'm also in love with the Philo Lemon Lime. Mine is more of a bright neon green and has some pretty impressive sized leaves as they mature. A few are even half neon half dark green. It reminds me of a cross between the lemon lime and the heartleaf. It's so cool. I was happy to hear you mention that one and all the other more common trailing philodendron. 😊
So I have had a melano and a gigas and I’m here to say I 100% disagree that they are easier lol. They size up faster, which is awesome! However their leaves get stuck so easy or rip so easy and they come in wonky….I was so disappointed! I sold mine after a couple months.
Thank you for sharing. I totally agree with silver sword. I chopped and shared props with a friend and mine and died down. Done. I have a small Gloriosum from etsy for 6 Mos. What can I do to encourage growth??
Oooh right on time @plantsbymelissa thank you for the hr & half long video I can watch while I'm in the kitchen prepping for Thanksgiving dinner btw I wanna wish you & your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 sending lots of love your way
Thank you so much that is so kind! I'm so happy I could finish this video today! Happy Thanksgiving to you as well 🙏 I just finished making a side dish tonight 🫶
Thank you so much! I'm so happy with this pole now. It was a journey to get it here but it grows super fast and was worth it! It taught me a lot more about moss poles too since it was one of my early ones 😁
Your collection is amazing!!! Definite goals for me to look forward to! I fail every time I try a Micans on a pole. Yours is GORGEOUS!! Thank you for sharing your collection 💗
Thank you 🥹 Micans likes to grow a lot of it's aerial roots outside the pole in a way. It definitely vines more but it does appreciate more moisture so it can grow them out to anchor on.
If you don't like some of your plants, give them away. There are many people loving your unloved plants. Chopping back doesn't make you love the plants again. And your unloved plants are too beautiful to chopp back.
I've chopped back several plants and they grew so much better so it does in a way :) I have a love hate relationship with a lot of my philos but I care about all my plants. It's not that easy to just give plants away but I will be working on downsizing some next year 😁
I'm with you on the grp 3 plants...totally felt like you were talking about some of MY plants haha. I've NEVER warmed to the pink lady, Jose Buono and the Burle Marx Fantasy. My Pink Princesses, White Knight & White Princess are only now starting to grow now that we are in spring. The other one I have is the White Wizard which is growing so well...keeps giving me lots of nicely variegated leaves. I don't own ANY velvety philo simply cos I cant be bothered with their needs & there higher susceptibility to spider mites. With you philo lemon lime just trim trim trim and it'll bush up real nice. I did that with my Brasil and it's much bushier than before. Your Brasil is beautiful! Your Burle Marx Variegated is GORGEOUS!!! I love it! I have mine in grp 1 hahaha. I have a tiny ROF and I cant wait for it to grow. You should check out Jan's one from Sydney PLant Guy....his is AMAZING and HUGE! Also I need to give my Florida Ghost a pole now cos she's growing so swo much. I have her in my north facing window ( your south facing hehe) and she LOVES IT!!! She is giving me lots of new leaves and they are all either whitish and minty so she's stunning (even if I say so myself 😉 Yours is much bigger though and beautiful. We are kindred spirits Melissa cos I have 3 pink princesses 😆 Your sodiroi is STUNNIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!!!!! And your Majestic is showing how much it deserves its name. And your Splendid is magnificent! Your smile says it all hahaha! Thanks for sharing all your philos with us and am so happy for you 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much Connie for all your kinds words 🥹 You are so sweet!! I'll have to do some chopping to fill them out some more 😁 velvety philos are soo nice but you're right! If you don't stay on top of the spider mite situation they can take over. As soon as I see one philo get spider mites they all somehow get them 😅 They tend to spare my moss poles plants more but maybe because I care for them so much. I appreciate you for always commenting and watching! 🥰
Have you made just a wire mesh pole with no moss? I’m getting tired of of the upkeep on my 7 foot poles but love the look. Will leaves still size up on just wire? Love your channel.
I haven't tried any without moss and I hear you it's a lot of upkeep with watering all the time 😅 I suppose they would still climb but use the wire as a stake support. I think some aerials can anchor on esp if your climate is more humid. Maybe I will make a moss-less pole one day and compare! 😂🫶
I think the third one you were thinking of is white wizard…. And there’s also a red Anderson that’s similar to these white Princess etc…. It’s at the top of my wishlist! The ph. Giganteum is going to get soooooooo big, mine is taking up half the room 😆jk, but yeah…big. Also, your Florida beauty is so beautiful. I bought a cutting for $200 when the price was at its peak and it rotted 💔, scarred me for life 😬.
oh noo! I totally understand that feeling 😩 I'm so sorry it rotted! I was tempted in a red Anderson at one point but wasn't sure if I really needed it with all my pink princesses lol. Giganteum needs its own room one day good to know! 😂🫶
When you have plants in perlite how much water do you put in the container, and how often do you give it water? I decided to put a few plants in perlite because they rotted, but I'm unsure of how to water it, and care for it. 🌿🌾🌻💚🌼🌵💦
I'm not the biggesttt fan of perlite propagation but I hardly leave any water if the container has no drainage, probably a half inch if that. As long as it is damp it's good and it will continue to wick up that moisture. Whenever it gets dry it feels lighter and doesn't look as wet.
Do you sell your plants or give them away to friends when you get rid of them? My collection is still fairly small and I've just started gifting cuttings 😅
My fave is my Billitiae. I bought a baby one that has been growing soo beautifully. I just love it. My other two faves are my Painted Lady and my Squamie!
I love my micans too. My leaves are so small though and its dissapointing to me. I will definitely be putting it on a pole thanks to you and hopefully they will size up so I can enjoy their color and texture more❤
They love climbing! You'll love the bigger leaves! They definitely vine on the pole more than really attach in if you're using a wire pole but they'll start sizing up halfway or so then take off 😁
I have quite a lot of the ones you showed, and I'm so sad about your Hastatum Silver Sword ! I love that one, yours looks so cute. My Mayoi is rather large, but always unfolds imperfect leaves, lots of frilly edges to go wrong. My Pink Princess ALWAYS gets stuck. A few I didn't have so thanks for suggestions, but I never have problems with them, they must like my environment and they never have Spider Mites etc. My favourite is the Painted Lady, mine is really yellow nd pretty, but it burns so easy under the lights 💚
knock on wood! haha I have no idea why spider mites love my philos besides the velvety yummy leaves lol. Even in 70+ humidity they come marching in this time of year. I really wanted to love the silver sword so maybe it will grow on me more 🥹
My Brazil… 🤷🏻♀ I ordered 5 various single leaf cuttings from Etsy and received them in Oct ‘23. The Mican’s is doing great, marble Queen is doing ok, Cebu Blue is vining and the Snow Queen rotted. My Brazil, however, it stayed alive with one leaf for 6 months and did nothing. I finally threatened it and told her that if she didn’t straighten up and start doing something, she was going in the trash! I figured she had a spent node and wasn’t going to do anything anyway. At the end of April ‘24, I finally saw new growth and 2 months later I have 2 brand new leaves. She seems to be a slow grower for me. 🤷🏻♀ I have threatened a couple of other plants 😆 my orchid for example. My husband bought it for me about a year before he passed away. 3 months after he died, it died and gave me a keiki, which I’ve been trying to grow and nurture. I’ve failed so many times and caused root rot and the last time I gave it an ultimatum… do better or I’m done, I give up. I had watched so many videos on orchid care and it just wasn’t doing it for me. Now? She has beautiful roots and 3 new leaves. Let’s see if she gives me my first flower spike this fall.
I like philodendron and monstera. Started collecting them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful collections. Can you share your grow light where to find them and name them? Thanks ❤
Thanks for keeping it real. Everyone always tells me philodendron are so easy. 4 years into it and I still struggle with them. I feel like I am finally starting to understand them. But man, most difficult thing I’ve ever owned.
I am literally trying to sell my birkin rn because I HATE it. I bought it as one of my very first plants, and I have gotten babies and whatnot out of it, but I am just not....feeling that form factor of philodendron anymore. The only one in that form factor that I like anymore is my PPP, and only because I just took a bunch of highly variegated cuttings to put on a moss pole. But like....IDK, the birkin is a no from me. I also got rid of my silver sword recently because it literally just....never grew. I took good care of it, gave it high light, kept it watered, gave it a moss pole, and it was just like "nah dog, growing aint it for me." Blegh. White Wizard is the one you couldn't think of in the white philodendron family. Good to see your Gloriosum is doing better! :D I have a Gloriosum Zebra and it's only one of two crawlers that I have (the other is a plowmanii), and I looooooooooooooooove the leaves! Thankfully tho mine has been a super champ! It was really finicky when it first arrived and threw a big ass fit, so I put it in my cabinet until it outgrew it. Thankfully it acclimated well coming out of the cabinet, and its leaves since it has arrived have been great. It is in a long planter on the bottom of a plant stand in a west facing window and it's so pleased there, lol. I have faith that you can do it! Or maybe try the Zebra instead of the regular? IDK, plants are such drama queens sometimes. I have tried melanochrysum a few times, and I am on my LAST attempt with it - if the cuttings I have recently taken (that are in pon) don't grow and it doesn't start to size up for me when I plant it and put it on a moss pole, I am going to give up lol, just like you. I just don't have time to be fighting my plants. I find myself gravitating more towards anthuriums, alocasias and hoyas more recently, and I am honestly good with that. I did recently order a philodendron esmeraldense - I think the long boi form factor is why I like it so much lol. We'll see how it goes!
You have so many Philodendrons we don’t get to see that often! Love your collection, I have currently 3 different Philodendrons, can’t wait to get more!
You have a beautiful collection. I would be interested in buying some of your cuttings from plants you no longer want. 😊. I'm having issues with my pink princess. The leaves turn brown no matter where I put her. 😢. I lost all the leaves on my squamiferum but hoping it comes back.
Do you by chance have any gloriosum on a moss pole ? I know theyre crawlers but 8 have a juvenile one im thinking of training to crawl upwards instead so their leaves all face one way much like a monstera instead. But im scareddddd. Any advice ?🌟🌿
I absolutely love Silver sword, I cut mine down to get more. So if everything goes as planned I’ll have ten plants ❤️ its the color, it just tickles my fancy 🥹
I have a moonlight philodendron I have had for several months and it’s gotten fairly large. However, it is growing outwards and I would prefer it to grow upwards. It’s on an enclosed balcony and is now infringing on the walk space. Is there a safe way I can train/encourage it to grow more towards? Thank you in advance!
Totally agree on the Brandi. Mine would grow really weird and the internodal space was way to big for how small of leaves it was putting out. I had mine climbing but it would never stay upright and would break itself from falling over constantly. Finally got rid of it a few months ago.
I really really want to get a melanochrysum but I'm a beginner. I started 3 months ago with no clue what I was doing. I got a baby calathea makoyana though and so far it looks really happy it's even getting a new leaf during winter. Now my point is if calatheas are difficult to care plants and so far I can manage it why wouldn't I be able to get a baby melanochrysum? Or an established plant. I prefer to stay on budget but if its better to get an established one I'd sprear 20€ more. I really need some thoughts on this.
That’s a young silver sword. I would give it more time so that it matures and you have the mature foliage. The mature foliage is very different, it will develop lobes. Mine doesn’t have pest problems.
Hello! My gloriosum grew really well in semi hydro (pumice and 25-30% Akadama mix). Give one of your propagation a try on a long pot. 😎 I got it as a water grown plant that was ridden w thrips from the shop. But once I cleaned it up and pest free I put it I semi hydro, which went smoothly because I was already grown in water. Now it’s growing 1-1/2 to 2 leaves a month and sizing up dramatically. Good luck Melissa!
Also, completely not related, but I want to ask: you have this really nice marble Queen on a moss pole- has it ever reverted and what do you do with it if it reverts to all green? I am growing 2 vines up the pole and sizing up very nicely, but both vines have been spitting out only green leaves now. I have it next to an east face window and also have mother grow light on it. No luck.
I found your channel bc I chose to get a Splendid. Thank you for ALL your knowledge and experience. I have learned a ton from you. I too LOVE my Splendid. 💚 One day mine will be as tall and lush as yours.
