After doing a DC rapid charge early one Sunday morning the little guy and I got a rude shock when our MG ZS EV wouldn't start. This kicked off a painful 7 hour episode which I will share in the hope it saves you some of the headache we faced.
In this video of my EV ownership experience in Australia I'll talk through the breakdown itself, my experience with the MG Roadside Service, a 'must know' about potential vehicle towing costs, assistance from Elanga the DC EV charger operator and the surprising suspected reason for the Mg ZS EV's breakdown.
Whether you own and EV or not this video has some great lessons for all drivers. While I wont say it was a super fun experience, I'm glad it happened in a metropolitan shopping centre and not somewhere....shall we say less convenient!
I'm sure you will enjoy the video and I'm looking forward to reading your comments to see if you have had similar experience with towing, roadside assistance or EV Dealers.

Depends on the provider and In a totally different country so it may be done differently here, but most people who've had simlar issues here the breakdown service usually sends someone in a van who has a tablet/computer loaded with diagnostic software. I know a couple of instances from one of the MG forums where they tried sending a code clear command via the OBD and that worked. (It doesn't always work but sometimes does)

I doubt if it has anything to do with 5G. Sure you get visible towers at shopping centers where you have trouble with key fobs, but there's a lot of other stuff there too. Key fobs are old (and cheap) technology. Most of them work on the 433MHz band, as that band is "free for use" in many countries. But the problem is there's a lot of OTHER stuff in that band. The worse ones are cordless bar-code scanners used in the shops in a lot of malls. If you're near one of those, you're hosed. They're also used in the warehouse sections for stock taking. They're also used for security systems in retirement homes and elsewhere. Depending on the design, putting the key fob "in the special place if you have a flat battery" mightn't help. There might be a "sensor" there and it may even be described like that. That explanation might be a "convenient lie" though. I expect that place inductively powers a fob with a flat battery so it can transmit the normal coded message on 433MHz to the receiver in the car, WHICH IS SOMEWHERE ELSE. Usually behind a C Pillar. So if you have trouble locking (which you didn't try that day), unlocking or starting, move the fob around the car, up against A, B and C pillars, and various other places to try and get a signal past the interference. If they used FM modulation, that would work, but since they use AM and a non-linear gain stage and data slicer, a bad design can suffer interference from a signal 100 times WEAKER than the one it is sending (ask me how I know :-).

You ran the 12 volt battery down, the BCM that runs a ZS does not like supply below 11.5V. Sitting there listening to the radio whilst recharging the HV battery is what did it. If it was excessive RF from 5G or other transmitters near by the LF aerial in the cup holder would have picked up the key as it's a very closely coupled induction @ 125KHZ and not susceptible to interference like the main 433MHZ signal is. 12V battery probably had a chance to recover a bit of charge and work once the vehicle was in at the dealer. I know from professional experience as a locksmith making keys to these vehicles that the body controls SAIC Motor(MG, LDV etc) uses are not very tolerant of low supply voltage. That said good on MG coming to the party on the towing costs, that's the type of warranty service that can make or break a brand especially one as new to Australia as MG.
@tassiedi
@tassiedi 10 месяцев назад
I'm not sure how that can be the case with this vehicle, does it not have "Intelligent Charging", in which the traction battery tops up the 12V battery when the vehicle is in Charge or Ready mode? The 2022 model has smart charging, I assume the previous model does too?
@ElectricCarAustralia
@ElectricCarAustralia 10 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks for watching and the insightful comment. Regards the 12 volt, this battery was charging as the car was in 'ready' mode with the HV contactor pulled in. In this mode the 12 volt battery display shows 14 volts which it was on the day while we were charging with the radio on. As mentioned I, and many other's, do this all the time with no issues. Cheers
@MrKldenton
@MrKldenton 10 месяцев назад
@@ElectricCarAustralia If that were the case the immobiliser would have been passed already. The immobiliser in all cars only checks at time to start, or in the case of a hybrid or EV time to ready. It does not check again after you have permission to start driving under any circumstances. 'Smart Key Not Detected' errors can only happen at start/ready request. This behaviour I have seen many times on MG smart key vehicles when the 12V battery is below 11.5V. Try this for an experiment if you don't believe me, drive your ZS down the street and chuck the key out the window. It'll keep going until you turn it off. Or to be a bit less dramatic just hand it to someone else after it's ready to go.
@ElectricCarAustralia
@ElectricCarAustralia 10 месяцев назад
@@MrKldenton Good points, and yes I have tested something similar to what you mentioned by not having the key close and works as you say. Not sure how that is relevant in this instance though as to end the charging session you have to shut the car down first then stop the charge. It's then when I tried to start again it didn't start again.

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have a Gen 1 MG ZS EV like yourself and my wife had a similar experience. After parking up at one of the local malls in Auckland, NZ, the car wouldn't start and gave the same error of the fob missing. She went back into the mall and bought a replacement battery and still no joy. Eventually, she had a friend pick her up and she grabbed the second fob and it started with that one. I did some testing afterwards and it seemed to be a combination of issues - possibly 5G interference near the car and the original fob she had wasn't working with the replacement battery as she had put it in upside down! No problems since but we haven't been back to that mall. We probably would have had a similar issue with towing and extracting from that mall car park so I'll be wary if it happens again. Keep up the good work and videos.

Difficult o understand why the car could not be jacked up and bogeys fitted under the wheels enabling the car to be pushed under the building into a place where the low loader could be used. Any forward-thinking tow company should have this equipment available as more and more electric vehicles are sold.

MG's key fobs operate on 433MHz - the nearest 5G bandwidth is 700-900MHz - I cannot see how this could cause the key to not work. As it's happened to other owners I'm going to suggest it's more than likely a software glitch. The first thing I would have tried would have been the spare key. I assume you couldn't get your hands on that? It stories like this that make me glad I bought a Tesla and a BYD. Both have multiple ways of starting the vehicle. Tesla with your phone or NFC Card, BYD with phone (not as slick as Tesla but workable), NFC or keyfob. I always carry the cards around in my wallet just in case.
@TeVolt805
@TeVolt805 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for the confirmation the fobs work at 433MHz. Shopping centers have phone towers, so that's what people see and blame. They also have chemists, supermarkets and warehouses with lots of gear chatting away on 433MHz. There was one lot of chemists that all had the same wireless barcode reader that was notorious for this. Good old fashioned "Remote Central Locking" doesn't stop you from driving away when the fob won't unlock the car. "Keyless Start" DOES if not done properly (with robust workarounds).
@jimgraham6722
@jimgraham6722 9 месяцев назад
Trouble is lots of stuff operates on 433, it is a iot/lora channel. Shopping centres would be full of this stuff. Consequently interference could be coming from anywhere including tire inflation monitoring system that also operates on 433. Not just for this reason, but safety in general I wouldn't fast charge an EV in an underground car park. In my view like petrol/gas stations refuelling, charging should only be in the open where emergency vehicles can easily get access.

The battery in My Honda failed in an underground car park at Westfield. I called NRMA breakdown who arrived in a ute that was too high to enter the car park. Fortunately the technician said he was used to the problem and carried a small trolley which he used to transport a new battery and his tools to my car so that he could replace the 12 volt battery.

Something to ponder, forty years ago tech problems in the sububs were simply owning a VCR. Then the PC arrived in our homes with software updates and patches to fix the blue screen of death. If this was not a warning for things to come someone buys an electric car, a Chinese one. Think about this, 1950s MGs and Morris Minors can still be seen on our roads. Machinical devices usually give some warning of failure, no so the electronic device. Good luck with the experiment. Cheers

Long time ago my ICE car was immobilised parking at Mt Lofty, Adelaide. There are a number of radio towers there that stopped me from deactivating the immobiliser. The RAA guy said to roll the car around the hill while he followed. With the hillside blocking the signals from the towers I was able to get it started. So this explanation might be plausible.

Had a similar experience with FOB here in the states. The list happened to my GF dad's van. First time at Sam's on a very cold day, the car didn't start. The auto service came and they got the van started. Battery in car checked no issue. It happened second time. They park near Sam location. This time I suggested Uber home , get the second fob, and drive over in my truck. The van started right up with second fob. Battery was changed and no more issue with that fob. Here is the issue. That fob was working elsewhere. My theory that location has other radio inferences. Battery power must have been down to point other interference over powered it.

I don't have an EV but it does raise the question of how my new Toyota Camry with an electronic handbrake would be moved to a specific point to be towed if it lost electrical power other than just the 12 volt battery going flat.

Luckily when I requested roadside assistance instead of a tow the mechanic was able to boost the 12V battery to get things moving again. Thanks for running through the experience. A few things to think about with getting stranded. I had a similar experience with the key not being detected with my MG ZSEV, but it was in my carport and nowhere near a phone tower. It self resolved in a few minutes and I don’t recall how or why. I remember I was in the car at the time and I do trickle charge there too, so I might have earlier started the car while charging. It will be interesting to see if more stories accumulate and start to point to what is happening. I do find the car software a bit unpredictable- things like the emergency collision warnings operating when I wouldn’t expect it and not when I would. And it sometimes demanding you put the seatbelt on and other times not (I don’t belt up when I’m just driving or reversing in my driveway).

As for workarounds, Ford in American have an NFC fallback in their key fobs. So in the event the key fob battery is flat, the fob is placed next to a place in the dashboard and the car can detect the presence of the key fob. This is a different and separate method from the usual wireless detection. The topic of electrical interference with a cars electronics is beyond the scope of effective discussion here. However it is worth investigating further to perhaps discover the range of problems EV owners are encountering.

About 20 years ago I owned tow trucks on the Gold Coast Queensland. I had road side assistance contracts for most of the major car manufacturers. We constantly had a problem with Land Rover Discoveries not starting in certain locations...nearly always near a shopping centre. There were 3 or 4 known locations. We could simply push the car 10 - 15 metres and it would start. The theory was that some type of electrical interference was interfering with the vehicle immobiliser. So I certainly think the 5G theory is highly possible.

Respectfully, I highly doubt '5G signals" contributed to this in any way. I have checked the RFNSA database and there is no high power/mmwave 5G infrastructure in use at Mt Ommaney, the mobile frequencies in use range between 700MHz and 3500 MHz which are commonly deployed low and mid band 3G/4G/5G bands which are found literally throughout Brisbane. Essentially there is nothing "special" about the Mt Ommaney location, and considering you were down in the carpark it is highly unlikely that you would have even been reached by the 3500MHz signal as it does not travel well through concrete whatsoever and the transmitter is on the rooftop. Vehicle key fobs also generally operate around the 300-500MHz range which does not overlap with any kind of mobile signal whatsoever. That's not to say it's impossible, however I would suggest that 5G specifically is extremely unlikely to be the culprit as the frequency band used at Mt Ommaney is exactly the same as what is used throughout Brisbane and SEQ as a whole. There could be another source of radio interference in the area though or maybe even a weird quirk with the charging location.. It will be interesting to see if there are any other reports of the same happening on plugshare in future.

Yes another source of interference to the car remote receiver in the MG is the likely cause of the remote not functioning. Typical car remotes of all brands operate from 315MHz or 433Mhz. Everything from wireless microphones to video security systems use these frequencies and can 'overload' the car receiver if operating nearby which prevents the car from starting. Low priced imported products from overseas can sometimes exceed the legal power limits. Look up LIPD class licences for the Australian regulations.

Thanks for sharing. Your story leaves me wondering if you would have had any towing issues if you were with RACQ. I've read that BYD is in a financial business partnership with Eagers, not just an arrangement. MyCar is an arrangement. Our local MyCar has such a dislike for EVs they have refused to service BYD EVs. The only BYD general service agent in Qld outside of Brisbane and Gold Coast at the moment is at Maroochydore. That's pathetic support after 1 year of operations in Australia. At least MG has a pretty good network of service agent set up already. 18 months ago we had a 2013 Hyundai i30 and the hand brake actuator failed. The vehicle was a couple of months out of a purchased Hyundai extended warranty (from new), so no claim there. The hand brake locked up when this electronic part failed. $800 to repair the damaged brake system on one rear wheel. The failed brake actuator cost $6,000 just for the part. The total cost was $7000 plus the cost of having it towed to the dealership. Financially speaking, we would gladly swap scenarios with yours.

G'Day, Firstly let me acknoweldge the professional and fair discription of your issue. We have been towing operators for over 20 years, and your situation does happen here too with all types of cars in an Undergound car park. We have a big shopping centre here. And from time to time we get called for a vehicle broken down there. Problem is there are stormwater grates on both ends of the driveway so Go Jacks cant be used. We have recently undergone training for handling EV's, so we are on the catch up ourselfs. Your exsplenation of possible 5G interference might be plausible, but if the fob is in the receptical its almost a direct connection to the radio loop in the key. My best guess is that something else was interfering with the operation of the Body Control Module in your car. Maybe even the clock in the charging unit iself. Electric Handbrakes are a pain when they dont operate and mostly there is no overide. Regards Peter W.

Hi Greg, I have the same MG ZS EV that you have. I have not had any trouble with my car starting, but there are 2 places where I shop in Adelaide where I have locked the doors, did the shopping and returned to my car and the doors would not open. Both these car parks are out in the open. I suspected a low battery in my key, but I found the problem, both these shops have 5G towers right next door. I found that by rubbing key between my hands to warm it a little and put myself in-between the door handle and the 5G tower, hold the key against the door handle and it works every time. I hope this is helpful to other MG drivers.

If it was 433mhz, if you lay a piece of metal over the top of the fob it can be foil, don’t wrap it, find where the receiver is in the car and try it. I have a location I go to in a normal street and my fob stops working i actually have to be practically in the car to operate it. This is not limited to your experience.I find many service departments can’t deal with some of the technical faults they experience and logs often point them to false faults.

I think it's more likely to be an incompatibility between the Chempower software in the charger and the MG ZS EV's operating sysrtem. I fail to see how a 5G tower would have affected the car. The MG ZS EV doesn't have the ability to receive 5G signals, and the key fob and the 5G transmissions are on different frequencies. It may be a magic combination of all 3 that's causing the problem, in which case "good luck getting that resolved" as one will always blame the other and you'll end up going round in circles with providers. TBH 5G is a joke, the maximum effective signal range from the tower is only a little over 300M (1,000ft), and less in a built-up area. I own an Atto 3, which also comes with "roadside assist", but I had never heard of the company providing it, so I just kep paying my RACQ subs instead. At the end of the day, they all end up calling RACQ or AA at the end of the day anyway (RACQ also have recharging vehicles for EVs (A generator hooked up to a 7kw charger)).
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 10 месяцев назад
TBH "5G is a joke, the maximum effective signal range from the tower is only a little over 300M" That is NOT RELEVANT when talking about Low Band 5G around the frequency bands of 700mhz, 850mhz and 900mhz. These frequencies have EXCELENT signal range and penetration due to obvious low frequency physics. This just happens to be a bad coincidence for Euro spec Keyless Entry and Push Button start key fobs which operate on the 860ish to 900s mhz range. Note these are ALL under 1 GigaHz thus way beyond 300m range with not much power would be quite easy.

Greg, you have nailed several point with this video. First off, the EV industry needs to hammer the charging stations and the supermarkets to ensure that EV's can be moved with ease. Second, why couldn't the towing company send a front / rear lift tow truck with a dolly for the "trailer" wheels on the car? Third, the RFI is a real problem that affects most people with electronic key fobs. Fourth, am not sure of the wording / sequence, but, locomotives manufactured in China, due to their alternator magnetic fields on their engines, cause problems with the signalling on occasions. This could also extend to EV electronics. Your video has given me pause in purchasing an EV, as the reliability factor is still questionable.

I also don't think it is likely that a 5G (or any other cellular transmission device for that matter) could jeopardize electrical systems in a car. AFAIK, auto industry is tightly regulated and all the sub systems are verified against immunity to certain frequency bands and certain power levels. (unless the car companies deliberately want to cut corners to bring their product to market like the VW fiasco in 2017. If they so choose, I think they are taking a huge risk upon themselves and highly unlikely a sane car manufacturer would do that). Having said that I wanted to know what are the certification that MG has put forward for MG ZS EV to Australian certification bodies (ACMA?). I couldn't find any online, so I asked from MG, and quite surprisingly they replied that "there are no certification documents that MG has to provide to the customers". I thought that these information are normally publicly available and there are no trade secrets in them. The sole purpose being the necessary authorities can verify that the product complies to the prevailing standards in the country and for any interested buyer to make sure that they can drive the vehicle they payed hard earned money, with peace of mind. As MG is not going to give me anything further, I have raised this question with ACMA, who is the body in Australia regulating all communication spaces. They have replied to me that they escalated my request and come back to me asap. I will let everyone know what is the result.

It seems to me that these kinds of issues happen to new cars. I'm keeping my old one. My car's park brake is operated by a cable attached to a lever that I can manually operate and my transmision is manual - can't go wrong, and never ever does (not for me anyway), oh and to start my car, I turn a key. screw new cars!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I have been ambivalent lately at getting an EV for my wife; might just hold off until the infrastructure etc is a little more polished. Thanks & good luck 👍

In this case any modern car with Keyless Entry and Push button start could have similar problems. Soo ICE cars uses Euro radio specification for Key Fobs could have similar problems. Which is a massive chunk of the Aussie car market. My car was built by Magna Steyr.

That’s unfortunate mate, this is the problem with all this fairly new whizz bang electronics crap , I’m just not into all this stuff , my last car I bought had a model run of 13 years , and mine was on the tail end of that so 6 years on , not a single issue ( touch wood) so far. I used to work in the motor trade years ago , and I hate these electric cars with a passion , and I think they are going to be the shit boxes of the future I’m sad to say , I hope I’m wrong though. I say this with a family member owning one , the more I see of them the more I do not like what I see. I hope your luck changes and yours gives you a good run. Cheers.

Good to hear it all worked out, but unless I've missed it: despite the 'surprising cause' in the title here, I don't see any definitive explanation for that [?]. 5G & fob issues etc would seem to be highly unlikely buck-passing. I would have thought the 'disconnecting the 12v battery neg terminal' to do the trick & seeing given this may happen with various EV brands using rapid chargers (a very common topic in the UK fora). But as you say, the answer seems to be 'no' on that one too ... So, any closer to discovering the real cause? BTW, I haven't had any issues with our earlier gen 1 which we had for a few years, and now our gen 2 facelift. However we did have cause to check with MG customer service & following a spate of social media 'terror stories' about being standed in the bush & with apparently hopeless, uninformed 3rd party roadside assist contractors. In any case, their response was surprisingly quick & supportive: MG confirmed that Roadside Assist is renewed every time the service is carried out by an MG dealership & for the life of the warranty; this was accompanied by a text message from our service centre at Motorama MG Moorooka that indeed, the roadside assist renewal had been passed on to Allianz & that everything was in order, including yet another conformation from Allianz. No doubt there could be some play with regional sub-contractors. Sonya Rudez from SAIC (Brisbane) was extremely helpful. mgcustomercare@smil.com

My last two vehicles the dealership that looked after my Nissan was great, My Volkswagen dealership was an of branch of my original dealership that created their own site they were fantastic. The dealership managing my MG have been very unprofessional, difficult to deal with(not necessarily to do with MG as they manage many brands, previous cars purchased there by my partner prior to them having MG we had a similar experience. If there was a different MG site nearer me I would have purchased there)

Hi Adam, thanks for the comment. Yes the ownership of the Dealerships seems to also have a big impact on the Customer Service, irrespective of the Brand.

Tesla key fob follows the north American bands of 434mhz or 315mhz. Which is no where near Low Band Mobile Cellular frequencies of around 700mhz, 850mhz and 900mhz.

Oh wow Euro spec Keyless Entry Fob frequency is around mid 800 to 900 megahertz. Which often is where Australian radio devices borrow the spec from. The 3x Low Band Cellular frequencies in Aus are around 700 MHz, 850 MHz, 900 MHz. Welp that's a bad radio interference coincidence that should not of happen.
