So i've been technically working in corporate America since 2018. I started at Deloitte, then moved to Accenture and now I'm at Google. My journey has been eye opening and rewarding at the same time. I've witnessed discrimination, bias, unconscious bias, you name it! Happy to share my story in hopes that it will help someone navigate this space better and learn from my experiences! Thanks for watching, don't forget to subscribe!

Bro is telling no lies! I had the same thing happen to me in corporate, this woman was literally upset because I did not hang out with them after work hours and I was like ma'am I keep my professional and personal life separate as a person who have worked in corporate all my life your co workers and managers are not your friends. So she started going around the office saying I wasn't working and not team player, but what she didn't know was that I was truly the wrong one to play with because I kept a document with dates, times, deadlines, and documentation of everything I did on the job and it dated back for months. I happily sent those documents into the EEOC and she was eventually fired please don't play with me. We also have to talk about how being a black introvert is like an internal sin in corporate America because the number of times people assumed I was mean just because I didn't want to gossip or hang out with them was wild to me.

Right I'm not even in corporate America and had the same issue my boss wanted to be friends I said okay at first but then it's started being overbearing. Wanting to hang out after a full shift I been around you all day don't want to hand out then texting me everyday at home . I had to tell him let's just keep our relationship professional it was too much and I had already told him I'm a introvert. Luckily he's a cool dude so he was cool about it I'm still nice with him at work though so I guess that helps . I've learned from past jobs being too quiet is not good so with this job I tried to force myself to be more outgoing I guess he thought I wanted to be friends.

I worked with a guy who was black just like me. One time I picked him up from the airport because he was stranded and he stayed at my home for two nights. Also, got him in touch with my ivy league friends when he was considering applying for business school. I was slow to tell him about my personal business, but eventually did. A year later, he got promoted and became my manager. 3 months later, my "friend" I'd talk to all the time about all his problems fired me from my high paying ($250K+) corporate job Your work friends arent your friends. Period.

I disagree. That is the method used by those with little or no value. It’s the same bad advice I was given decades ago. Here’s the advice that works for me and works for my mentees who are smart. Before I mentor anyone I tell them if they are racially fragile then I’m not the one for them. 1. Determine what kind of life you want to live. Basically, begin with the end in mind so you can plan goals around facts and data, not racial feelings. 2. Learn a valued skill. There are literally tens of thousands off videos online teaching them. 3. Go to meetups and other free organizations that have skilled people in the industry of your choice and establish relationships there and put in some FREE work. It’s not really free because you’re learning too. Enough of the preliminary. 1. At the job/career, the most important thing you will ever do is build alliances and allegiances. That starts with the person who has the most control of your career at the company besides you and that is your immediate manager. Not lead. Not supervisor. Your manager. Know the differences. If you don’t have direct access to your manager, find a role where you do. If you don’t have a manager pushing for your success, join the Goddamn club of everyone before and leave to find one who will. 2. Get mentors!!!!!! Preferably multiple mentors at a high level at the company and outside the company. They will help keep you accountable and help navigate the ups and downs of Corporate. That’s it. There is more but I find in attempting to help other sort through their Corporate struggles, this is enough to thrive. Of the 12 people I have mentored, across all races, the three I had to let go were all Socalled Black. And it was because they just knew 100% that Whitey or Blscky were out to gatekeep, steal their ideas, keep them down for some reason. I read very similar energy in these insane posts. Oh. Here’s my favorite. “I don’t come to work to make friends!” Says the losers who usually don’t have good relationships even in their personal life. And sir, you are right to save money because it keeps you from being desperate. But no one today will save their way out of corporate. The average in-company ease over the last five years is around 2-3% annually . The average increase in housing costs during the same time period was around 6% annually. Meanwhile, smart people know investing into the S&P 500 returned wealth at around 18% annually. You cannot save to that level especially with inflation as high as it is now. Only with assets can one track better than inflation. I know my method work because I have not only mentored a dozen professionals in Corporate IT across a few Fortune 500 orgs but my customers are among the top corporations in the world. And I mentored my two sons to the same level of relative success for their ages. Provecho!!

Being a black person in corporate America is so exhausting 😔 why can’t we just do the work & go home without all the extras? If I don’t want to mingle & be extra friendly or hang out after work & get to know people more what does that have to do with my ability to do my job? Long as im respectful & cordial it should just be that. These companies always preach so much about “diversity” well that should include those who are introverts or more direct. They make us do all these bs personality quizzes to only want us all to act the same. And the passive aggressive whi*e women are the worse always finding something to complain about that has nothing to do with the actual job/work

You can. Make up a story about your personal life e.g., spouse, kids etc. Yeah, you shouldn't have to, but you better. It gives you easy outs. My kid is sick. I have to pick my child up from school, the little league game etc. My husband/wife is having surgery.
@itsrelativ3967
@itsrelativ3967 12 дней назад
It was always about me avoiding difficult co-workers. I'd get brought into the office to be told that I'm too serious or seem nervous. I would simply say that I want to make it home to my wife and kids without ruffling co-worker's feathers. They took that as me being a threat or too condescending. After a year and 8 months, I respectfully resigned.

For us introverts they should let the work speak for itself Just because a person isn't engaged (gossiping, small talking, after work meetups, minding their business, unbothered, polite and all that) it doesn't mean they don't want to be there maybe they are just not into that or don't want to mix personal life with work which is torally fine

You let your guard down was the mistake you made. Never reveal long-term plans for yourself beyond their employment objectives. I backed my big mouth up with obtaining a law degree while employed but stayed another 5 years to get vested in the pension plan, which I am enjoying today. Stephen Covey said, "Begin with the end in mind." Great advice! The company folded two years after my departure and my former colleagues 401(k) plans were frozen and were reduced to pennies. The legacy I left - some black people plan for the long game too! They were in the midst of a Superstar and didn't know it. I left with my Ten Year Award, Top Performer Award, My Law Degree, and a 100% return on my investment in the stock market. I did party because it was 1999!!!

I used to work for CA at Amazon. You hit the nail on the head with every point. What irks me is the social and psychological expectations for black men in CA. I was the same way, laid back and nonchalant individual who worked hard and meticulously. But it's never enough, they expect black men in corporate to be sociable, extroverted, cracking jokes, and the life of the party. But, when we don't fit those stereotypes it becomes a problem, we are viewed as uninterested, unfocused, and lazy from a corporate standpoint which is vehemently untrue. Meanwhile, other race groups can be quiet and reserved and no one bats an eye or questions their drive and work ethic. I feel this definitely needs to be addressed in CA. Turned down interviews and job offers because the hiring Managers happened to be females. It's just what it is, females tend to come with a lot of issues and insecurities in the workplace and in life in general. Pettiness etc would stifle your productivity and lower your morale, so I'd never put myself in that type of environment.

Right. As a black woman in Corporate, I find that you cannot be the introverted "black girl". I feel like they need you to be the jester or animated persona they see on TV in order to entertain them. I come in, say good morning, give them the same half smiles they do me and let my work speak for itself. I do not indulge in gossip and activities that are after hours. When I leave, it's good day. I work remote but only go into the office on Tuesdays which is a saving grace. I can't deal with these ppl too much. Especially a white woman. 😒

My initial leadership was phenomenal but it later went all the way to hell after my original CMO, VP, AD, immediate global manager resigned -- I had no more advocacy or trust. Of course I was the only Black and gay man... chileee. I have never smoked more in my life. So many shared how they were on antidepressants. It is REAL! Thank you for this video!

Chile...as a blk woman, I am soooo connecting with your comment. I'm a Washington journalist, and clearly remember all the toxic people in management I had to deal with when I first arrived. Just about every move I made was criticized, and I knew it was because I was stereotyped as the "angry blk woman." I'm written up because I ask why a computer system has crashed again, but nothing is said about the whte guy who just cursed out loud and threw a chair across the room because he's stressed out. Thank goodness I have outlasted all of those toxic people.

I think a huge part of this problem, in addition to the bias, is this insistence that your co workers are family and they're not. We are there to work with each other and that is it. There should be no expectation that we're going to hang out together or be friends, which is inauthentic anyway because a friend is someone you choose, not someone you're forced to be around because you both work at the same place. All this talk of us being family is making people think we're supposed to be super close and it's really just insincere to think this way.

Based on my experience in corporate, I’ll explain why this statement is coming from a place of naivety. Hear me out because I’m not going to sugar-code anything: As a BM you will most likely have to become docile to fit into the corporate world, ain’t no “real ones”.. you have to take your time and thoroughly select your words in that office.. speaking your mind/keeping it real is not an option in most cases… The BM’s aggression is unwanted.. his correction is uninvited.. his overt desire to be in a position of authority is repulsive to them.. every time without fail, when the BM places his foot down, the atmosphere is polluted with tension.. It’s much easier for them to embrace the BW, because she will bust her butt for them.. she will be totally respectful and pleasant.. but more importantly, she will neglect family.. she will turn her nose up at her black male counterparts.. and marry the corporation.. In corporate settings I’ve seen white males stick up for the black women over the white woman.… treating her like a long time friend… I’ve even been made aware of secret romantic relationships between black women and white males in these settings… from them ppls vantage point, it is the perfect collaboration (BW & wm).. Of course it would be ideal to for us as BM to work together and build our own stuff.. but most of us are overwhelmed by the thought of unification.. we’re oblivious to the game that’s being played.. living by the standard of another group of men.. with only enough bandwidth to earn a decent living for our wives and kids.. and some of us have the nerve to consider ourselves “real ones”..

Not just corporate. MEDICAL. Been through all of these things in Medical / Research. PIP was the moment I quit immediately. I was the top person - factually, not my opinion. They recapped daily and weekly reports at meetings every morning and every Monday. And then quarterly reports. My quality rating was unmatched. That fake excited, volume based approached you mentioned doesn’t work. I built relationships with my people. And that was on a team that was the best performing hospital in the state. The funny part is that once people saw me leave, 2 or 3 people immediately said if he’s out, I’m out. 😂 also said and done they lost 24 out of 26 people from that team.

I started my first job out of college and grad school at a transportation rental company *cough cough* Penske, and I went through so many hoops and hurdles with some staff members when I knew I did my job and was actually creating relationships with our customers. My downfall was having reactions to some of the disrespect and hidden animosity and I was put on a performance plan and let go a week later but I was over it it was affecting my mental.

That is not true. Just by being a man you have more of an advantage in the workforce. Look up the statistics black men make more money than black women working the same jobs in corporate. There are more Black male engineers and doctors than black women. What is holding many black men back. Is not having a father to teach them how to navigate manhood. To tell them to go after corporate jobs.Instead of sports and being a rapper. My dad is a plumber/construction worker. He has a Jewish boss that said he wants to hire more black men. But they don't want to work. Everyone wants to see black men advance. It's much harder for black women to be respected.
