Most videos showing you how to tunnel under a driveway to put PVC irrigation lines from one side of the yard to to other make the process seem way easier than it actually is.
In this video I wanted to share with you my actual experience trenching irrigation lines and wire in the the lawn through a hand dug tunnel under my paved driveway. This same process would work for a sidewalk as well but it would be a faster and easier job.
► The main tool that I highly recommend you buy for this project is the Little Big Shot brass water jet nozzle for your garden hose. I've linked to it here:

► As for the irrigation system I'm installing in this video it's called Irrigreen. You can see how fancy it is and why I'm installing it here:

Great job getting that pipe through. Done plenty of those in my past. Messy but feels good when you get that pipe across the driveway. Saved yourself some money doing it yourself.

Definitely saved a big chunk of cash doing it myself; I like trying hard manual things as much as I can because I learn so much but I'm not excited to do this again any time soon! Once is good for me until the memory fades a bit! LOL

I used this to get under sidewalks. I'm sure glad my builder put a 2in ABS pipe under the (wide) driveway for me. Some people think ahead and do the little extras. I just had to trench along the edge of the driveway and found the pipe.

Appreciate all your videos. In my last house I put down two 1.5” near my garage and one 1” close to the road before they poured my driveway. Can’t imagine trying to do this.

I hit publish on this video then told my son I'd never do that again! Lol, I knew it would be a beast of a job but as is always the case, hard is still doable and it feels awesome to have done it myself. Thanks for watching so many vids btw, you regulars make this channel so rewarding for me. 😊

Wow great job, mission accomplished. I remember there was talk before that you were going to need to hire this job out to a pro.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
Yep, I was originally thinking I'd hire this out but it was you (or maybe another commenter, I can't remember) that gave me the confidence to give it a try myself. Learned a lot doing this for sure! Btw, I like the new handle 👌

Well Brian, as usual, lots of detail with your project which I appreciate. I have been wanting to put in irrigation for my lawn project for some time now at the request of my wife. As you know, "happy wife, happy life"! I have a much larger amount of sod to open for the pipe layment and was wondering if you know an easier way than the hand digging. Love seeing the whole family getting involved. Great job editing!

You can rent a trencher. It makes a big mess. Black poly tubing can also be "pulled." I don't know if rental places would have that or not. Around me you can hire someone to pull the pipe (run a machine) and leave ends for you to dig out and put in valves and heads (the hand work so most expensive to hire).

2" PVC with a mini-jetter nozzle on a pressure washer may have worked much better for this tunneling venture. but congrats on accomplishing this daunting task!

Me too, fingers crossed. I think it'll be fine but if it ever cracks then I'll just deal with it then.

You can get parts from the big box store to connect a garden hose to the tail of a PVC pipe and the jet nozzle to the front end. IIRC, a 3/4" pvc slip joint x male hose thread fitting is available at Lowes but not Home Depot. I got all the other pieces at Home Depot.

He actually showed that kit in this video and explained why he didn't use it.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
true, you could just as easily buy all the individual parts and make a stronger PVC jet nozzle than the kit from Orbit I showed but I still think the tip should be hard like the brass nozzle I used because it's constantly getting rammed up into compacted ground and rock. For under sidewalks or softer ground then a PVC accessory would probably work but the nozzle I used is only $10-15 so seems like a no-brianer to me.
@paullasko2023
@paullasko2023 Год назад
@@TurfMechanic If you get the individual pieces you can attach your brass nozzle. Worked really well for me.
@TurfMechanic
@TurfMechanic Год назад
@@paullasko2023 ohh yeah, I see what you are getting at. In that case yes, that would be an awesome upgrade for a lot of people! Thanks for fully elaborating!

The risk is that any fittings you add to the PVC adds surfaces that it can snag on. I'm dealing with this right now. I got 7-8 feet under my driveway before hitting something I can't bore through, but I can't remove the PVC because the male GHT adapter and jet nozzle I put on the end are catching on material. I'm probably going to have to cut the pipe and start over.
