89fxst, this particular bike uses the frame as a tank, there is no way to remove it which is why some people and this guy mounts an external "pocket bike" gas tank (seen at 1:10). This vid is very helpful to those of us tackling the same issue. I've acquired a '78 Puch that was stored for years and of all the suggestions I've heard about cleaning out the tank, this has been the best, not to mention proven technique.
Great video! I recently got a 1977 Puch Maxi that has been sitting in a shed for the last 20 years and is in mint condition...except they left the gas in it. I'm running an external tank for now, but I will have to clean that tank out soon...this helps a bit!
You guys are like a trio of mad scientists! You work well together! Good job ! Just bought a 1980 Puch Maxi II. I'm sure I'm gonna have to do some of this stuff to it. Thanks for the video !
Cool, I had to do this. I put alot of big bolts in it and shook it. I also put a metal rod through where the pedals go and rotated it. Then I coated it. It wsas pretty easy to prep the tank since I removed everything from the frame.
I find your videos very helpful and informative and I hope you keep making them. That being said This looks like a nightmare I want no part of and I'm going to have to try and find an easier way. I clean almost everything with white wine vinegar, I think I'm going to try that.
The gunk that's coming out is old gasoline dried out converted to varnish. You didnt have to use the Evaporust since you also have the POR15 kit. This kit include "Prep N Ready" which removes the rust. Should've started with the Marine Cleanr. That dissolves the varnish. Apply the Prep n Ready (also reusable) to remove the rust and leaves a zinc phosphate coating to promote sealer adhesion. Let it sit (as you did with the Evaporust). Drain and rinse.Dry and pour the sealer. Drain excess.
Thanks for the video everone, im restoring a 1996 tomos sprint step thru 49cc ,this was very helpful ,keep up the great work everyone ☆☆☆☆☆ ,《 go mopeds .
One of my puch tanks was so damn rusty I had to cut the gas tank off, sand blast the inside, weld it back together, and then use the po15 kit. there were tiny pinholes all over the bottom of the tank no matter what i did wouldnt have made a difference. so... your tank looked pretty damn good compared to mine.
Looks like a daunting task since I don't have a stand like you do. Do you think the primary source of the sediment was inside the small oil cap you found inside at the end?
Brad Mello Might not seem like it in the video, but this was a two day slog. Honestly this video is kind of a nuclear option, tanks that have huge amount of rust or pinholes I like to seal, but tanks that only have surface rust Evaporust usually does the job perfect. I was also far lazier in this video than I should have been, if take the engine and wheels off a Maxi you can manipulate it in sort of the same way as a stand if you get a few friends together.
what a ton of work i bet that plastic oil mixing piece wasnt part of the original design but an afterthought for the "american market" conceived by a beaurocrat not an engineer, and it screwed up the WHOLE BIKE! that piece may be the singular reason why the bike lost popularity and so many of the old ones survived with only have a few hundred miles on them today.
I found the same little piece in mine from the old petcock I also used the hose to shoot the broken pieces of my current one out of the small hole still looking for the oil cup I know it should be in there because I was the one that knocked it off
I have the same moped, one year earlier. My tank has been empty for years and has the cup on the bottom of the cap. I had the engine looked at and the guy told me that the worst part was that the gas tank was very rusty. But after watching your video, it is not nearly as bad as yours was. Do you know of a site for other parts? I know that they are old, but it seems there are groups that like this company's mopeds. Just wondered if you had other knowledge that I don't.
www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Shop_links#Parts_Vendors_with_Online_Catalog_and_OrderingTreatland.tv hands down, after that 1977mopeds and the Buy/Sell forum on MopedArmy for anything harder to come by. Puchs are popular because they made millions of them back in the 70s and both regular and performance parts are plentiful. I rarely do a POR15 job on tanks now unless they're really bad, lighter jobs you can get away with a vinegar treatment, full instructions are on the tank desrusting page on the same wiki linked above.
I am so new with mechanical stuff, your videos are great. I was just watching the engine drop video, very informitive. And the rebuild is another one. Makes me excited to get my hands in it, even though I dont really know how to do it, lol.
