I like the water hose analogy. Jet washer is similar to high voltage low current and as we know can cause serious damage. A fire hose will knock you over (high current low pressure) but it won’t literally take chunks out of you.

I know I'm late to the party but; AC (alternating current will kill you, DC will make you hurt yourself. Thomas Edison wanted to use DC for this reason but transformers could not be used. He used the fact George Westinghouse's AC was used for the electric chair in executions as his argument for DC. I worked for over 36 yr. at a power plant and 125v DC was used tor main switch control and was itself switched with open knife switches that I accidentally touched many times, still here.

Your electric shock analogy was one of the best I've ever seen, and I only have 45 years experience in the electrical industry. Rust treatment was also interesting. Back in the 70's we had galvanised steel dustbins and the lid on ours was rusty. My Dad treated three area's of rust. One with Hammerite paint, one with Jenolite and one with Kurust. 15 years later the only patch that hadn't gone rusty was the one treated with Hammerite. Another 5* video Edd.

great demonstration for amps and volts. I have seen a Fuel Tank attached to a cement mixer and ball bearings placed inside. As the electric Cement Mixer spins, it keeps the fluid moving and the ball bearings impacting the rust. 24 hours spinning and the tank looks like new on the inside. -quite separately- My old step father used a fuel tank primer (internal) with chromium on his 72 VW Camper, which is normally used in the aerospace industry. we pulled it out of the camper and 1 quart was enough to coat the inside once we kept flipping it and spinning it. If the tank is separated from the vehicle and you block all access to the ports, the tank can be shaken in waste deep water to help take the weight of the tank. also Rolling it upside down and on its sides helps make sure the primer, or in this case the rust eater is constantly coating the internals. the Nuts washers and Screws idea are a good idea.
@hifiguruen
@hifiguruen 2 года назад
Removing rust from inside the tank, I have strapped the tank to a concrete blender, and then let it run for 30min in each position. I usually use gravel instead of expensive screws and washers ;-) Automatic, no special tools and all you need are two ratchet straps. Use the internal brace inside the concrete blender to affix it.

I've had this issue my self, and after many hours of using different products I used a 1mm slitting disk to cut the tank in half, got inside with a wire wheel, treated with rust cure and welded back together took around 4 hours to complete and had much better results than relying on the chemical formula to do all the hard work

Great vid. I’m getting the rust out of a CX motorcycle tank at the moment,by using white vinegar and gravel. I filled the tank with both,wrapped it in an old quilt, then put in into a cement mixer for half an hour. Came out pretty good once I emptied it and dried it out with a heat gun!👍🏾🛠🏍

2 things . "It's the volts that jolts but the mils that kills " is well worth remembering! Then, you've put some things in to help remove rust BUT the things you added were Bright Zinc Plated (BZP) and zinc is much more reactive to the acid in rust remover that all the acid will be used up very quickly and become de-activated. Try granite chips from a garden centre.

Nice VID, THX! I once saw a video with a rusty motorcycle tank on RU-vid. The colleague had simply taken small stones from the hardware store, filled the tank with water and these stones. Then the tank was sealed all over and clamped onto the concrete mixer drum. After turning for a while, the inside of the tank was sparkling clean!

The tank on my 50 year old Cortina was REALLY rusty. I took it off and strapped it to my old cement mixer. I added a shovel full of pea shingle and left it spinning for a couple of hours. Net result, all that flaky rust crap removed! Downside was some holes appeared! Lead filled these and gave tank a coating of "Slosh" (tractor boys love this stuff!). Coat of paint on the outside and Bobs yer uncle, good as new!

Quite a few comments about buying a new tank... my opinion: The cost of the products aren't relevant, that's purely for an investigation into what works best, you wouldn't buy all those products yourself. Also, not everyone can spare the cost of a new tank, and to be fair the value of the vehicle as a whole, for what it's going to be used for, a resto will spiral out of control if you just simply replace everything on it. Plus it's about showing what is possible if you're prepared to put a little work in to save something. We are a throwaway society now, sometimes fixing up stuff is fun eh?

@Yvolve
@Yvolve 2 года назад
@@col8981 You can do it with water, nuts and bolts, wrapped in a blanket, put in a cement mixer on the lowest setting for a motorcycle tank, or strapped to the front of the mixer for this unit of a tank. Flip it round a few times, does it in a couple of hours easy. Electrolyses is also a good way to go, literally convert the rust and draw it onto a piece of sacrificial steel. You'd need a power source that is reliable though, which can be expensive.

Hello Edd! Thanks for this video. In the past 20 years I've been using Fertan to convert corrosion. After ~ 24 - 48 hours I remove the excess of the converter using water and a sponge. After the parts are dry I apply another layer of Fertan which I let impact for at least another 24 hours. Afterwards I remove the excess of the 2nd layer of the converter with water and a sponge. After drying I treat the spots with isopropyl alcohol to ensure a clean and free from grease surface. Next step primer and paint (+ additional protective coating if necessary e.g. if on underbody). I also use rust converter regarding before mentioned strategy on parts that are not looking corroded, e.g. if I weld in some new piece of metal to chassis or underbody of a car. That's cause I've discovered when grinding down the welds that there's often small rust-particles on the grinding equipment, which are getting rubbed into the surface of the metal by the grinding equipment itself. Therefore I always use a rust-converter even on such spots before painting. Of course coating a weld with tin is cool and oldschool kinda treatment, sadly not always possible. Best regards, Michael aka. Mr.PastGlory P.S.: Of course there's the option to buy phosphoric acid at the local pharmacy ... then You might get asked 'ARE YOU A TERRORIST?' (at least here in Germany) :-)

An easy electricity analogy is to think of current as being like mass and voltage to be like speed. If you get hit by a flea doing 70mph it might sting a little but no harm done. If you get hit by a 46 tonne HGV at 5 mph you will really know about it.

Agreed! he did say at the beginning, that a brand new tank costs £140 .. now add up the price of all the materials he used to restore this "turd" , from paint to rust remover to screws, nuts and washers to elbow grease and what not .. I don't believe a single penny has been saved that day. .. but then again, all in the name of science and content creation I guess 😏
