These are questions I answered as part of a panel for the Opioid Use in Primary Care conference (OUPC 2024). I have a long history of substance use issues related to complex trauma. I talk about ableism i've experience when accessing care and also answer some other questions about my experience and how things could possibly be improved.
This was a conference aimed at primary care providers (Doctor's, Nurses etc) so this is why i'm using more medicalized language than I normally would.
OUD = Opioid Use Disorder
These are the questions I answered:
Q1: Tell us a little about yourself?
Q2: Could you please speak to how opioid use treatment is ableist in nature and how this can create barriers for people who are neurodivergent?
Q3: What are the differences you experience, when accessing opioid medications for pain management vs. that of OUD treatment?
Q4: If opioid use disorder treatment were to shift more towards treatment in primary care rather than specialized clinics, what would you envision this looking like? How would this be beneficial or harmful to you?
