Welcome to It's OK to talk!
Here we talk about lots of interesting things.. (To me, anyway)
These things can include addiction to alcohol and binge drinking, marijuana/cannabis/weed addiction, addiction to sugar, processed food and binge eating, addiction to pornography and social media, dealing with depression, anxiety and panic attacks, men's mental health, personal accountability, the benefits of physical exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, challenging yourself daily both physically and mentally and much, much more.
In this particular video I talk about my experience sourcing and taking the alcoholism medication antabuse and what happened.

I struggled with binge drinking…I wouldn’t plan on drinking, my intention is to be sober, however, I found myself in split decision situations! Disulfiram works extremely well for me, I will not drink knowing that I’ll be sick if a drink! I tried it one time 4 months in, and I was BEYOND SICK…truly awful!! As long as I take 100mg every night, it takes drinking off the table for me!! Been sober 18 months 🙌🏼

Antabuse works for me. It really has allowed me the chance to focus on my triggers without the ability to give into them. Focusing on triggers required sobriety…now, I truly experience the tigger trauma without having a choice to drown them into shame. Antabuse has given me the pause I needed to learn the cycle that has made me feel powerless for 25 years. The pause has lead to greater understanding of the why. Antabuse gave me a chance at a reprieve that let me see the beauty in dealing with trauma instead of the compulsion to numb it. Antabuse has been a great tool for me.

Pretty powerful video. Your honesty is refreshing. I am an alcoholic. I have never tried Antabuse. I tried Vivatrol, which is supposed to keep you from feeling "good" after having a drink. It worked, but I found out that if I just drank way more, I could overcome the effect of the medication. So, in essence, I ended up drinking more. I have tried AA and other programs and that didn't help. I have lost my wife, house, and friends and now have heart trouble because of drinking. And I still drink. Alcohol addiction is a bitch.
@itsoktotalk

Damn, I always thought that more alcohol may be able to overcome that medication. What are the hangovers like then I wonder... Probably way worse and you don't even enjoy the drinks.. Alcohol addiction is a bitch for sure. But you're not.

I know for me, I need the Antabuse to take the option off the table. I won’t struggle with the “will I or won’t i” drinking thoughts. I know I don’t have the option so it forces me to move on.

Thanks for the comment mate, that's what I was looking for! Just didn't give it long enough. I think if I was to take it again, I would know that once it had gone past 7 days of taking it, the option is well and truly off the table to drink. It\s scary to begin such a journey though no doubt because we all have a history of lying to ourselves and letting ourselves down with big decisions like that. Works for some though, so congrats on that!

Your honesty is refreshing. My doctor refused to give it to me, said that if I fancied a drink then I’d just stop taking it and go get a drink, so I can’t comment from experience. I got a prescription of Librium instead. Kind of took the edge off the withdrawal symptoms, but after that it’s just keeping the mindset that you’re not going to drink. I found it became a lot easier after 2 weeks off the booze. Once I’d done two weeks off, it became ‘the norm’ to realise that I wasn’t getting in from work and not heading straight for the fridge.
@itsoktotalk
@itsoktotalk Год назад
Interesting! I must've been pretty convincing for my Doctor to prescribe it to me then lol.. Still didn't work though. It's a decision we all have to make without outside influence because that can just lead to resentment and fantasizing about drinking again. Well done on your journey mate, mine has just started again.

Everyones recovery is unique. For me nothing I would have done alone up to naltraxone or the 30 day shot was going to work by itself. Im pretty fresh out of a 30 day rehad I credit most my mindset too, im on antibuse and naltraxzone every morning religously. Do not skip. As much work as we put into drinking... take your pills!! Also i took the rehab very extreme. I went in voluntary and clean, 0.0 and did not watch 1 minuete of tv or drink 1 cup of coffee.. i worked out and did the classes from sun up to sun set. You abseloutley have to want it and work for it. When they say only 2-3 people in the room of 100 will make it... you have to want that kind of challenge.

I started on Campral a few weeks ago, Antabus was not an option due to incompatability issues with epilepsy and its related medications, but decided to comment anyways to maybe help someone else out there. Campral supresses the strong mental cravings you get after a long period of time of alcohol abuse and the habit it causes. It's mainly a helper when you personally are in the right mindset to quit. Campral is not the instant brick wall of "omg that vodka shot just killed me" feeling that Antabus cause when you have it in your blood and then drink. But it's a solid little kick in the ass to help you walk past the alcohol section in the grocery store without feeling pulled towards it. It's still a hard job to ignore it, but much easier now. For me it was my old job that caused all of this, which I should have quit years ago. Came home and just wanted/needed to immediately shut down. And alcohol became the off-switch. That job almost cost me my life. It got close a few times though the Covid years. New, physically active job, different team with a better corporate framework, varied tasks and not much repetition day to day and so on. A type of work that for me makes me hate weekends because the job is more fun. Having Campral as a "buddy" during this detox/de-habit period... Night and day. Campral is two tablets of 333mg, 3 times a day. So it's a constant one vs Antabus, and with tablets 3 times a day, you just never forget about the better place you're heading towards. You can skip a few Antabus and deal with the awful effects of a drink, while Campral takes a week to reach steady state equilibrium after starting, and just as long to taper off. And it's not affecting the liver. And it won't make you think you're about to die if you have a relapse. Antabus punishes you for letting the craving for alcohol win and drink. Campral helps you keep yourself sober when you're already, or about to be, on a strong mental health path forward and WANT to stop but struggle with the cravings. It's giving you the little extra help you need to succeed. Ask your doctor for advice for your specific situation, but my experience with Campral so far is very positive and helps me a lot. For you, yes YOU who is struggling with alcohol and might even be half way down the vodka bottle already today. You have already taken steps in the right direction, and you're already researching your options of how to quit the habit. Remember, it's only up from here, and the steps will be many and tough ones, but worth it. Take care, and good luck!

And that's only the first breeze; then your ams get heavy - is there an ongoing heart attack you think, and then worse and worse - heart speeding partly from the pills, partly from panic. Your sight weakens. Shit, if you've experienced that one once, and indeed never had to go to EC, then you cry and promise yourself neve ever to redo that mistake. One important thingy is, never to allow the antabus level in your blood to drop too low.

It saved Phil Collins, he had tried all the most expensive rehabs but it was only antibuse that stopped his drinking. Your discription At 12 minutes is the same as mine. But it has worked wonderfully for me for 30 years. By the way its way cheaper than beer so you save money. I was a very heavy drinker, missing work, drinking 24 beers a day at 160 lbs. no problem. I wasn’t doing any exercise even though I had always been athletic. I was also smoking and eating high cholesterol foods like chicken wings and other greasy bar food. I did find over the years I became better at taking it. For example, I would ALWAYS take it thursday and Friday mornings because thursday and friday nights were my most common relapse nights. I never got really sick when having beer after antibuse but after just one beer my face would turn embarrassingly red my breathing would become short. Those symptoms would increase if I continued. So I would stop because drinking was no fun. Fairly quickly I didn’t drink or smoke anymore. I went back to an active lifestyle, golfing ( I played better drunk) , hockey, skiing ,soccer and biking all great sober none existent when drunk. My work and home life improved dramatically. I still take it and probably once a year something happens that sets me off and I relapse, buy a dozen Stella and after one my face turns beet red, I can feel my pulse pounding and I remember it ain’t fun anymore and I go do something useful (as the Arnold says) Anyway for me and for Phil Collins it has worked great. All the best and good luck.

I pulled over because I was driving. Called 911. Felt like I was literally going to fucken die. Didn't realize that the small alcohol that was in the drinks would affect me the way it did. One of the most dangerous things about starting medication to block intoxicants, When you are not truly ready to recover, is cross addiction. I was put on something called vivitral. Many years ago. It is a time release shot version of naltrexone. I was prescribed it for a heroin addiction. However, once that medication was going to be in my system for a month and I knew I could not do heroin, I started to look into other alternatives to get high. I fell deep into being a raging crackhead. Honestly I also have to say that the added darkness to what I was already going through is what eventually led me to getting sober. But I don't think that's how the pharmaceutical industry planned that medication to work out.😅

I have been curious about this topic. My "day after" symptoms are usually not extremely bad, but I usually feel "negative" and have increased insatiable appetite after a binge. This moderate hangover in itself would seem to be an adequate deterrent to drinking, but it isn't. I don't think my health is good enough to risk this drug.

There is no deep knowledge or reflection to be taken from this. You like to drink and find easy and comfort in it. You may have a drinking problem that will likely get worse as long as you seek to do things your own way. The good news is that the pain and consequences may be so great that you will be motivated to not seek for self and that will be a new beginning.
