Price the Husqvarna Automower 450X on Amazon: amzn.to/2wg8MU4
We have had the Husqvarna Automower 450X for the summer of 2017 and were thrilled with the performance. We had some issues that were mostly user related. In this LONG video, I talk about the unit and some of the issues, trying to give a potential buyer of a robotic mower and idea of what they can expect. This is a different style video than what we normally produce, but the topic is too broad to nail down to a few minutes.
We hope this helps if you are interested in a robotic mower. Please ask any questions and we will answer them to the best of our abilities.

Back in the 1980’s my father had an auto mower that lasted about a decade. All he had to do was feed it Cheerios and beat it occasionally and it would do a decent job of mowing the yard. He complained about the 9 year set up and training time but after that it only took reminding and maybe a shout to get it started. Things went well till it discovered girls and pot, then the mowing became sporadic and half ass. Then suddenly one day the mower just quit and moved on to a much smaller yard. I’m waiting for my auto mower to age and learn the yard.

I did the layout and installation by studying the on line videos Husqvarna had on the web ru-vid.comUgkx2KDztGvdU79XTmlqIMSUyPq8CjprGJOR also recommended it When I started the unit it stated it would take a few days to learn all the spots in the yard. So I thought it was just finding the areas till I noticed it was cutting. It is so quite you don't know it is cutting.

@jamescope4511

I've had one of these for six years and it is the best thing I've ever bought. In Scotland we don't have the problem of the soil drying out - more the reverse. I tend to run it on second shortest cut height. Moss is a problem in most lawns round here and the Automower has completely eliminated it somehow. I think maybe because the daily mowing gives a nice mouthful for an earth worm and we now have a fantastic population of them which helps with aeration and drainage. There is a clear line where it cuts near my drive - moss-free where it cuts, mossy where it doesn't. Our wet weather also means that if you have a conventional mower you might not have suitable conditions for days so you have to catch the grass and cart it off when you do get to it. This takes nutrients out of your ground which need to be replaced. My grass is always freshly trimmed whatever the weather, no matter if I have been away or busy working.

Saves us time and this will mow in the rain. Also, we would have to pay someone $100 a pop to mow our yard. In the middle of growing season, that can be twice a week. The cost of this mower will pay for itself in one season of paying someone to mow AND we have time freedom. Yard always looks great and we won't have to buy a new mower in 5 years.

I have the 430x and after three years it’s still going well. 2017-2020 I have not spent a penny on maintenance or battery changes and have not had any boundary wire brakes, so do it right first time and burry it. I my mower does just over 1/2 a acer without any problems. You can set your system up so you don’t have to do any trimming, if you set it to over run the boundary wire and have a solid surface that it’s runs over like a flush brick edging then you will have no trimming to do. I would not hesitate in buying another one. If you have a short flat lawn this will make it look like a golf course green it’s that good. Changing blades takes about 5 minutes. I change my blades every month. They will last a longer but as the blades are so cheap and only takes 5 minutes i changes them every month. If you want to know any more from someone that’s now in it’s fourth year of mowing let me know.

Hello everyone. Automower installer here in Easley SC. In order to understand how the Automower works, you can't compare it to a traditional mower because it works differently. Once installed and cutting the grass daily for several hours per day (timer depends on the yard size, it's complexities and type of grass) It then never has to cut tall grass again because the grass never gets a chance to get long. Just like any plant, when you cut more than 10% at one time, you keep the plant in shock and un-healthy. When the Automower cuts 1/8" to 1/4" of the blade length, there are many positive results. The grass gets healthier, you never have dead grass laying on top of the lawn, you dont get thatch buildup, the tiny bits of grass that do drop, turn into food fast and create an even moisture barrier meaning the grass needs less watering. There are even some lawn pests like fire ants and moles that don't like the daily movement of the Automower, so they leave the area being cut. Other benefits include, the lawn is always cut, no more big smelly mower in the garage, the maintenance drops to near zero. Instead of keeping up with the mechanics of a traditional mower, (oil, filter, spark plugs, gas ETC) Your maintanence becomes about $12 per year in new blades and you change them with a phillips head screwdriver. If you do need your dealer, the current heaviest model (cuts 1-1/4 acre) weighs 30 pounds. Just put it in your trunk and take it to the dealer. After 2 years of selling and installing the Automower, the only ones we've had come in are damage from outside sources. All this said, Automower is not for everyone or every property. If you love to ride or push a mower, Automower is not for you. Some grass types are too much for the current models (the company is working on those) It cuts random, so no striping. (although, even customers who were concerned with lines, are very happy with the carpet-like appearance the Automower offers) The mower does do what the manufacturer claims. It's funny to read what folks who have no experience have to say about this 23 year old technology. Yep, Husqvarne has been selling them since 1995. Now that there is an app that connects the owner to the mower, sales are blowing up. With a 60 day money back satisfaction guarantee, most folks should be able to consider the chance that the product is the real deal. I liken it to the microwave, folks didn't think they wanted one, once owned, they do not want to be without it. Happy mowing. Easley Lawn and Garden 864-859-1678

Bought and had the 450X installed early last spring. They used a small ditching machine to install the guide wires. Our lawn was basically solid yellow in spring, thick with plantain and a number of other weeds including about 1/4 acre of heavy moss. During the spring and early summer we cut it continuously at about 1.75 inches and during the the hot summer once every 10 days. By fall almost no weeds, no mossy areas at all and looked the best it ever has. All the trees and shrubs/landscaping has been edged with 12" wide paving bricks with weed barrier under them level with the surface of the lawn, absolute no trimming needed. There is no watering system and the natural wild grasses did not turn brown like our neighbors Kentucky blue grass with a sprinkler system did. We have three zones with guide wires for a total of 2 acres. It is now 04.30.2018 and no yellow dandelion blooms and very few weeds. They told us each growing season we would see fewer and fewer weeds. It's total cost was less than the previous growing seasons mowing/trimming costs by a local lawn care service. Being wheelchair bound this gives me more fun money for other projects! By the way my Grandson named it Ka-Chow after his favorite car-tune character.

And you should try not to have it working night time. Animal like hedgehogs gets really hurt or killed by them since they hunt at night and dont run away when the mower shows up

It offers a guaranteed fall back for some people that may lose their main job in the summer or just need some quick cash they can mow some lawns to cover the difference or bills. This thing is $3500 dollars. Like WTF kind of home owner will buy that? Besides what is to stop thieves from walking up and jacking the thing and reselling it. Like really? For 3500 i'd rather have 1/3 of the biggest most bad ass Zero turn mower. That shit would cut this guys lawn in 3 minutes. Wayyy easier maintenance, wayyy easier service, and makes much more sense. I live in East TX, and actually am a dealer for both traditional lawn mowers and Husqvarna's robotic mower. I, too, was a skeptic, until I put the Automower into use myself. When I sell a traditional lawnmower, I recommend that the customer not cut any lower than about 3". I also recommend that they not cut more than 1/2 the length of the grass, so that they don't "scalp" their lawn and cut all the moisture out of the grass. I have not found Automower's cut height to be a challenge at all, and I have units in various types of grass, from my own lawn which is primarily Centipede, to customers who have the most lush St. Augustine and Zoysia I have ever seen, to one customer whose property is in the middle of a cow pasture and has the typical mix of grass that you would find in a pasture, including Bahiagrass. There are a couple of reasons why the shorter cut height works. One is that the mower keeps the grass maintained at the same level all the time (keep short grass short). This means that even with the shorter grass, the moisture is not being cut out. In addition, the lighter weight of the unit coupled with the sharper cut of the razor blades puts less pressure on the grass. In my experience with the 5 units I have in the field plus the one that I own, the mower works on every kind of grass we have put it up against and the grass quality has actually improved over time. In addition, Husqvarna is coming out with a unit that will have a bit higher cut height this year. I believe it will be available by April.

There are some work-alleviating advances for which I thank God. One example is the washing machine and dryer, another is the dish washer. After your excellent breakdown on how this little mower works, I may be adding it to my list. For all of you haters of modern inventions, think of it this way. You could be doing something amazing, inventing something really cool, or you could be sitting on a mower going round and round in your yard every two weeks. Your choice, but I would rather spend my time creating.

How big is your yard? I used three hours to mowe the lawn with a tractor and push mower for our yard, and bought a hq 420 a couple of years ago for approximately $1900 here in Sweden, and it covers it with ease. Sure enough, during spring and early summer when the grass is growing rapidly the robot runs probably 12h/day, but from July-October I have it run for two days with one day resting. A friend of mine have a 450 that cuts more than 50% more than it's rated for without a problem - sure, in spring some areas of the grass is growing a bit longer than mine, but never so long that it becomes a problem for the mower. 👍

A friend does it sometimes but terribly. I hire a part time landscaper that usually does a good job but isn’t dependable. Hired full time landscaper but he only showed up once. I’m not ready to buy one yet. I’m hoping they will get really advanced within five years or so before I buy. I’ve read a comment that they have a gasoline version. I’d like to be able to leave one in the garage for safe keeping then come in on the weekend and just fire it up and let it go while I do other things. Thanks for making this video, you really answered about all of my questions.

I'm on my 3rd```Husqvarna robot lawnmower. The first was a 330X that died after 2 years and a lot of maintenance. I thought I’d give it a second try and bought a 430X when it came to market. It had stopped by the road and was picked up and crushed by the municipal trash disposal company the very first day after I installed it. Fortunately, the credit card I used to purchase it had an insurance policy and the card company replaced it. The lesson learned there is, don’t complain about credit card annual fees if the card carries benefits such as loss insurance. The 430X does an excellent job of cutting. Having said that, it is a relatively high maintenance system. I’ve already replaced the cutting motor after only a few months of use. Fortunately, it was covered under warranty. The GPS system is ineffective so I use the guide wire program method to obtain better lawn coverage. The remote app is full of bugs and disconnects and/or crashes routinely. If you have grounds keepers or lawn sprinkler service personnel servicing your property, it’s best to make sure that the boundary and guide wires are buried at least 6 inches (150 millimeters) deep. I have to trace and repair cut wires whenever they edge the beds or the sprinkler company digs up lines that the grounds keepers have cut. Finding wire breaks is not as easy as some make it sound and can be very time consuming. I use the USB port and diagnostic program to troubleshoot the mower. My primary residence is in Florida and I have Zoysia grass. The best cutting results next to a drum type mover have been obtained with the 430X. It gets quite hot here in the summer and pushing a drum mower around can be exhausting. I have a love/hate relationship with the 430X.

Built two mower doors in my black aluminum fence so the mower never crosses the driveway. It cuts all the way to the curb, crosses the sidewalk. I do have a complicated lawn and used the guide wire. Makes a big difference because it will mow till 5% left then go charge. It has never died trying to find the charging house. I now only spend 20 mins weed eating every other week....the unit is only $3,500 compared to a nice zero turn that takes up space in your garage....simple ROI.

I have had a Husqvarna 450x for 14 months. I was concerned about the cutting height at first, but my experience is that the very short clippings fall between the grass blades and form a mulch that keeps my lawn greener in the hot summer than my neighbors' lawns . I can walk across my lawn when the dew is still on the grass and not have clippings on my shoes; this is a great feature when you have many grandchildren coming in and out of the house. I continue to treat the lawn with fertilizers, weed killers, and weed preventives as I have for the last 30 years. I like the smooth trackless look that is always manicured. I change the blades every two weeks.

I had a similar unit, a WORX, it was supported by a local company(Robin). The issue I had was that it got stolen every few months(I got you on video twice red truck!!). The company would track it down and or replace the unit no problem. I also had issues with the guide line getting cut, but again, the company fixed the issue with no problem. Some times the unit would get suck and I would get home from work to notice, the lawn had not been mowed all day because it was stuck on the corner of our garden. I just grew tire of dealing with this and constantly babysitting the unit. Every time there was an issue, I would loose a day of mowing, if I could fix it myself, or nearly a week if I needed the company to fix the issue. To its credit, when it ran, it ran. I could go a month without issue and it was awesome, then the issues would start in and I would spend a month chasing after one issue then the next trying to keep this system on track. I've heard there is a robot edger and trimmer too, but after my experience, I've lost interest for now. I'll let other spend the next few years working through the issues.

Nice review. I mow somewhere around 3-4 acres, so I've been looking to get a 450xh to at least mow the main part of the yard and save me time on how much I need to cut. I'd been hoping to wait for the EPOS model to not worry about a wire because maybe I want to change which parts I have it mow or want to reconfigure the boundary a few times while I figure out which areas to use it. However, I've heard rumors they've been having issues with the EPOS versions, and would explain why they still haven't been released. All the comments from people that love theirs helps me though. @1:14 "Every other day or every other day" lol.

Wondering over all cost per lawn mowing... how long until you have to replace the unit with a new one? So if you would have to pay someone $200/month to mow, and husqvarna costs $1200, and if you mow six months a year, then at six months you would break even, or after one year's mowing. How many years does the average Husqvarna last? If it lasts six years, then cost is $200 per year plus electricity, water, replacement blades, and service.

We have a yard that has four terraces that our Husqvarna (420) cuts without any problem as long as it's not reigning! Before we bought it I used a lawn tractor for all reasonable flat surfaces, but had to use a push mower for the slopes in between - to be honest my expectations was that I would have to continue to use the push mower when I bought the robot, but it has exceeded all my expectations and more! 👍❤️ I wish I had bought one ten years ago though...it would have saved me three hours of mowing twice a week during spring and early summer when the grass is growing like a maniac!

Thanks for sharing. That mower looks great. and you think you made a good choice. A the price that is roughly 3 times the price of a battery-powered lawn mower, it is not an easy decision. In parts of the UK where it rains nearly every day this mower could be heaven. Given the number of years that they have been around, I'm surprised they don't come with the ability to spread fertiliser and weed suppressant.
@goobypls5732
@goobypls5732 6 лет назад
Many ppl in the EU dont like weed suppressants bcause they believe its harming the environment. Furthermore many countries have a ban on most of them. About the fertilizer, yeah. But since it mows the grass several time per week, the cut down top of the grass falls in between the grass and fertilizes itself. You just have to fertilize once a year.

A lawn that have had a razor blade mower (like all Husqvarna ones) will grow strong and often outcompete weeds. Grass straws are not particularly found of being cut in half from time to time. Just trimming a few millimeters at a time more frequently keeps it at a better health.

Wow! Judge much? Most of these comments have more to do with criticism of the people who use the machine rather than the machine itself. I live in Deep East Texas and was rather skeptical about how useful the Automower would be in our area. What I have found is that it does work, and it works well. Unless a homeowner is using a lawn crew, the homeowner is the only person who's job is taken away, and that does not make them lazy. Perhaps they are busy with other things and choose to spend their downtime with their families rather than in their yards? I have seen this unit work in both city yards and in more rural areas. Most lawns in this area are not striped, so the fact that the mower does not leave stripes is actually a plus. Although 2.4 inches is a bit short, it is not as damaging and drying to the grass as mowing with a traditional mower at that setting would be. While the Automower is definitely not for everyone, there are many people who will benefit from the technology. Think about the elderly, or disabled, people who travel for work or work long hours....just because it doesn't meet your needs doesn't mean it won't meet someone else's!

I have four separate lawn areas not connected, two around the back (secure) two on the street. One of the areas on the street is a really odd shape and not really sure the machine would work even with all the wires installed i.e. narrow strip with trees in it. Also I would not want to leave the machine outside to dock and charge which I guess defeats the object i.e. you are supposed to leave it out then it can do it's job over a long period and return tot he charger so it doesn't sound the tool for me. Am getting less fussy about lines on the lawn though.

QUESTION: If trees in the yard drop twigs and leaves, must I constantly be clearing the yard of these items so that the automower can properly operate OR will the automower run over leaves/twigs, and still get the grass mowed.... with me getting the leaves/twigs up at my leisure? Thank you!
@PerWigren
@PerWigren 5 лет назад
Small twigs and cones are no problem, although they shorten the life of the knives somewhat. Leaves are absolutely no problem, at least in normal amounts. Large fruits like apples may be a problem at times. You should pick them up regularly, or make the area around the apple trees a separate zone that is mowed less often, or even only on demand after you have cleared the ground.

All in all, my automower has been in the garage for over 2 months out of 8 months of use and Husqvarna doesn't seem to care much... Great video and thanks for posting. I'm surprised by all the negative comments... but this Al Gore's world wide web after all. LOL. You are the first reviewer to spend time calling out the cut height issue for taller fescue types of grass. With the high hours of annual use, I wonder how long the LiPo battery will last before requiring replacement. I agree these are the future, and I would gladly trade in my Deere or Honda for this. However, I have some grades that may be an issue. I am going to arrange a test in the spring from a local dealer and look forward to the results. I wonder if Husky could provide larger wheels that would increase the height of cut (we're only talking 1/2"). They do have a rough terrain kit that comes with taller knobbier for the replacement rear wheels. I too agree there will be more and better options in the near future - and hopefully lower prices.
