My experiences with OCD and PANDAS | Anna Wurzer | TEDxCarrollCollege

At the age of five, Anna had strep throat, a common infection that may have caused her to develop symptoms of OCD due to an uncommon neuropsychological disorder called PANDAS. From that point onward, she continued to grapple with a form of OCD known as scrupulosity, or religious OCD. These experiences shaped who she is by teaching her about the connection between mental and physical health. She learned the importance of acknowledging and conquering the fears that OCD feeds on, in order to regain control of her life.
TEDxCarrollCollege was filmed on March 14, 2020 under strict social distancing practices ordered by the local Montana government and Carroll College policy in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. These recordings were not open to the public.
Learn more about TEDxCarrollCollege by visiting www.tedxcarrollcollege.com or www.carroll.edu. Anna Wurzer was born in Fargo, ND to her two parents, Karen and Michael Wurzer, who have both lovingly raised her and provided her with endless support throughout her entire journey with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Anna grew up aside her older sister, Claire, and a myriad of foster dogs that Anna rehabilitated and trained in her free time. Her passion for animals and for mental health led her to Carroll College to pursue a bachelor’s degree studying Anthrozoology and psychology. During Anna’s time at Carroll College, she has worked with many organizations, such as Youth Dynamics, Shodair Children’s Hospital, and Youth Aware of Mental Health, that help children learn how to effectively manage various forms of mental illnesses. Anna hopes to continue this work in the future by obtaining a Ph.D. in clinical psychology to further the research in the field and to counsel individuals striving to improve their mental health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I have been with ocd since moving to the states. I have intrusive thoughts all day. It is rare to not have them. I feel ashame for the thoughts. I started crying and panicking while I was eating with my bf the other day. I hate the physical sensation of my panic. I try to avoid it but it makes it worse. I think I’m a horrible person for finding other ppl attractive. I have shame in a lot of things I do, even if they aren’t bad. I am happy I saw this video.

I watched this nightmare unfold before me with my own child! Positive strep test with no sore throat or physical symptoms but crazy behavior problems that get better with massive doses of antibiotics....long term and untreated cases only to leave the child with OCD, intrusive thoughts, irrational fears, and for some reason a sudden and serious deficit in math skills. His physician diagnosed it as PANDAS then rebuked her statements due to pressure from her colleagues as none of them knew anything about it. Their fear of being wrong actually caused him harm because it blocked him from getting the correct treatment. He was shuffled through the mental health system and given harmful medications even though all of those professionals were completely puzzled as he didn't fit into any of their diseases either. After years it was found that his neural pathways have been damaged so he can no longer complete thoughts and he only understands about 70% of what people are saying to him. His IQ was affected by the long term autoimmune response to an improperly treated Strep A infection. He was denied antibiotics that helped because PANDAS isn't real. If PANDAS continues to be a HYPOTHESIS then foolish doctors will keep denying children treatment that can make a huge difference in their lives.

Yup, my daughter went years misdiagnosed. She lost her entire childhood from this devastating disease. she is fortunate in that she is now in college and it has not appeared to have affected her learning. She spent the pandemic teaching herself Chinese and is almost fluent. I would give your son time for his brain to heel. I still get so angry how doctors are not treating this. It goes against their oath by doing so much harm to these children by neglecting them. I fought so hard in Washington Star for so many yr-ears to change this and nothing came of it. What is the best treatment for this? Our 3 year old son was diagnosed with this a few months back. We went spoke to a chiropractor that specialized in holistic medicine. They got him on natural vitamins and supplements to help. Because they said he had a major infection on his brain causing these issues. A few days later we saw a huge positive difference. They told us he would need to take these supplements for 6-8 months and also do two weeks of on-site therapy at a chiropractic clinic in Tennessee. It was called Smiley Chiropractic. They charged $1,000 a day for almost two weeks of on-site therapy. It was painful because my wife had to take our son and stay at a cabin in TN while I stayed back in NC wit our 1 year old daughter. He showed some progress during the therapy but has regressed since he’s been home these past few days. He’s been home 3 days from this therapy and they said this regression was normal, but it’s so sad to watch our son hurt himself in these meltdowns. Anyone have any recommendations or any updates on treatments?

I am a muslim . Today I will like to introduce few aspects of religion Islam to you . Few of our beliefs are as follows 1. We believe God is one . He has no partners. He neither begets , nor is begotten. 2. We believe in all the prophets of God sent on earth for guidance of people . It includes many prophets, few of them are Hazrat Ibrahim ( peace be upon him ) , Hazrat Ismail ( peace be upon him, ) , Hazrat Eesa (Jesus)( peace be upon him) and finally Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) 3. We believe in all the angels , they are also creation of God. 4. We believe there is a day of Judgment 5. We believe , all mankind will be made alive again by God after death, on the day of judgment. 6. We believe that all mankind is answerable for the deeds which they do in this life in the afterlife. 7. We believe there is a Paradise made by God. 8. We believe Paradise is very beautiful and it has everything which gives comfort to a person. 9. We believe God has no son and no father. He is the only God. He forgives all sins whichever He wills but do not forgive shirk. Shirk means worshiping anyone other than God , may it be sun or fire or any personality. Also associating partners with God is shirk. Idolatry is also shirk. Shirk can be forgiven if someone ask forgiveness from God and decides to never do shirk in his life. 10. We believe God will enter believers with good deeds into Paradise in the afterlife. 11. We believe in all books sent by God . It includes Taurat given to Hazrat Musa( Moses) ( peace be upon him) , Zaboor given to Hazrat Daud ( peace be upon him), Injeel( Gospel ) given to Hazrat Eesa( Jesus ) peace be upon him) and Quran given to Muhammad ( peace be upon him). We have five obligations as a muslim to fulfill. 1. 1st is kalima , it is belief that there is only one God and Muhammad ( peace be upon him) is His messenger. After believing in this a person becomes a muslim. 2 . 2nd is Salah . We perform Salah five times a day. It is performed in arabic in a specific way . It is performed in mosque by men and at home by women , mostly . 3. 3rd is Fasting , it is done for 1 month in a complete year . In this we leave eating or drinking anything from early morning till evening. Then eat and drink till next early morning 4. 4th is zakat , it is giving 2. 5 percent of free wealth to poor people, once in a year . It is obligatory for those who have a certain amount of free wealth. 5 . 5th is Hajj . It is performed in a specific way in Mecca . It is obligatory once in a lifetime for those who can afford to go and come back from Mecca . We also believe in huqooq al ebad. Means rights of people . Means being nice to neighbors, do not harm an innocent, being obedient to parents except if they tell something against Islam . But in every case we will behave very nicely with them . And many more . I invite everyone of you to accept Islam . Thanks for reading.

expose your kids to germs so the immune system has something to attack, rather than looking at the brain as an enemy. train your immune system.

Germs are the trigger! PANDAS by exposure to Strep. After that it is all viruses and bacteria that cause the antibodies to attack the brain, causing OCD, Tics, Eating restrictions, Eat.. Exposure to germs is the worst thing you can do.

That would be the worst thing ever for PANDAS! That is a trigger . My daughter had it for 18 years and every time she had a flare it was from a germ. Unless your a doctor who has expertise in this disease or have experienced it yourself you may not want to make suggestions that could be harmful.

@@margaret19631 Doctors Now Recommend U let kids eat dirt to expose to germs n Hecko No. Not letting the Baby eat Dirt or get Germs from others. My newborn never go out my home til after 6 months to a Year. I Limit the People coming to see them n I say when we are Ready we will go see U. Your baby's Own Immune System Kicks in at Six Months. Exposing newborns to others Germs is not Good Parenting. Humans Survived because It's Survival of the Strongest n Fittest.. But what if Your kid is the weak link are U willing to let your kid Die so we the Rest of us n our kids who do Survive can Thrive. We are supposed to be humanely Creatures N Just should not be picking n chosing our own offspring to be tested to their Autoimmune system will Keep them alive or Not. We just spent these Years hiding from Germs. Pandemic Level Germs.
