Whitney, what an inspiration you are! I love your plans. I bought the fall capsule from Everyday Style and love the framework it provides. The colors worked for me really well except for the black. I switched it to dark brown. I had several items in my closet already so I’m sewing about half the items. I did spurge and buy a couple of things, the cropped jeans and the graphic T. Thanks so much for the pattern suggestions and the “why” you chose it. I’m just learning how to match what I envision with an existing pattern. I can hardly wait to see your look book. First, I absolutely love your hair. And that lipstick is so gorgeous that it’s killing me. You always look great, but those two things are just extra good. I’m drooling over the fabrics, particularly the plaids, and your colors are very similar to mine, so it’s especially fun watching. I have one question about what you meant when you were talking about “monochrome” at the top of the video. I’ve heard that term used in various ways by several people recently , and each time it seems to mean different things. My art major background is getting in the way of understanding what is trying to be conveyed in each case. Monochrome literally means “one color.” It doesn’t matter which color, only that it’s all the same, with maybe some differences in lightness or darkness. But, for instance, I’ve heard one vlogger understand it to mean a strictly black & white combination - which is not at all “monochrome.” But, colloquial speech changes all the time, so I just want to understand what you mean by monochrome. OMG, that’s a lot of words. Lolol 🤦🏻‍♀️

When I use monochromatic, I use it in the art/color theory sense meaning one color, but in different tones or lightness or darkness. I've also heard it used as black and white, but I'm using to mean dressing like a paint swatch card!

Do the burn test on the Merino if you’re unsure. It would smell and bead if nylon is there. Loving your choices, getting my sew-jo back, just ordered a couple pieces of the mid weight cotton spandex from Stylemaker. Ready to sew for me, doing flower girl dresses for my granddaughter’s wedding. Doing wearable muslins for size check, 1 down, 1 to go. Love the printed ponte!

Love all the fabric!!! The last floral that looks sort of like animal print! At first I thought it was a python print and then came the flowers...just Wow! Can't wait for the turtleneck pattern to come out. That will same me alot of money! I usually get mine from Land's End, but the cost goes up, up, up. I think I would save money making them myself. Really like the Harmony blouse you had on and your hair looked great. Did you get it streaked? The lights were hitting it just right to show off the lighter strands, very pretty. Have a good week!

The turtleneck pattern comes out tomorrow and it's so good! It has quite a few variations, but one of those would be a perfect substitute for the Lands End ones! I have so many versions of that pattern that I want to make!

pencil skirt plaid...make sabrina slims and add piping/tuxedo stripe down the side to fudge pattern match (I think I spotted a trend report with the tuxedo stripe on jeans somewhere)

I haven’t made up the Harper cardigan yet. I count on you to guide me in so many styles. Our figures are really similar, except that I’m very tall (5’9”) I find that somewhat amusing. 😄

You should definitely try the Harper! While I had to use the short pattern, you could use the tall one! Its such a great (and free) cardigan pattern!

You're right! I need to buy and make that pattern. I think it would work well for me! Homecoming is a football game (American football) that is followed by a dance. It's typically a formal or semi-formal event. It's usually a week of school pride/spirit events.

Hey Whitney I just made the free French Navy TShirt: Stellen Tee in cotton spandex. Love it even more than the Conchord and the Stellen is a bit more boxy straight from underarm down to hip. You gotta try it! Update: I did shorten the sleeves a lot (by 4cm) and I think it’s more flattering on my short self :)

You’ve probably covered this in another video, but I’d love to know how you preshrink/prewash your fabrics before sewing, especially 100% wool or wool blends, silk, etc. I’ve acquired some beautiful fabrics at estate sales recently, and I’m really hoping not to have to dry clean. Can’t face a return to those days! Thanks.

With my coating weight wools, I just steam treat those before sewing by placing them in a dryer with damp towels. I will usually just dryclean those finished garments. However, with other weight wools, I actually hand wash (usually in the machine on the delicate or hand wash cycle) using a wool wash detergent. I then just air dry the yardage. I treat these finished garments the same way. For my silks, I wash those on the delicate cycle using a delicate detergent and then pop them in the dryer. Once they are made up, they get washed the same way, but air dried. If the dried garments feel a bit crispy or are really creased, I'll just pop them into the dryer for about 5 minutes and they soften right up! I do the same for my linen!

I can't remember what pattern you used for your Meghan Sussex's skirt replication but that in the red knit would look adorable with boots and the cardi in the red knit too! I'm loving the distressed denim/hounds tooth fabric at the end, what ever you make with that will be stunning! How's the homecoming dress coming along?

I used the Charm Patterns Stanwyck skirt for the Duchess skirt, but this fabric would be lovely as a pencil skirt! The homecoming dress turned out so good and I can't wait to share it!

I also wanted wide leg cropped jeans. I am barely 5 foot 2 so when I need to shop RTW I buy petite sizes. However cropped jeans and the like can be too short. The sales associate had me try a regular jean 2 sizes smaller than my petite size and it fits just the way I want it to. Give that a try next time you need RTW.

I am new to today’s knits. How do you choose your size in a knit pattern, because they have negative ease? Woven fabric I have no problem with, but the knits have come out a little large.

With the independent pattern companies, I find that I can go off the size chart and be fine with my sizing. However, the commercial patterns (Vogue, McCalls, Butterick, Simplicity, ect) put so much ease into their patterns, it can be a bit trickier. I usually just chose the size I would choose if I were making a woven garment. For instance, the size chart for McCalls would have me make a size 18, but I know that I prefer the fit of their size 14. Therefore, I make a size 14 in their knit patterns as well. I tend to pick my size based on the finished measurements of the woven patterns, but not the knit ones. I hope this helps!

I bought some horrible ponte. The one that is mostly polyester. I washed it and it was covered in fuzz balls. I want to get the one that you use, I think it is rayon and nylon and something else. Could you please tell me where you got it? I appreciate it very much, thank you, Karen

Ponte is definitely not all created equal. While I can do a bit of poly in my ponte, I prefer the Rayon, Nylon, Spandex blends the best as they wash and wear like a dream. I can't say for certain about the Lady McElroy viscose jersey, but because viscose, rayon and bamboo jerseys are heavier (and therefore more drapey), they are more clingy than a linen or cotton spandex knit. @@busysewingbee3819 I would use something with stretch. JoAnns usually has some stretch poly blend bottom weight that you could probably get for muslin prices!

Oh, Whitney... Are you sure you want to match plaid on the curvy Sabrina slims? Are you going to be happy in the end with that detailed grid hugging every bump or bulge? Most women our age have to consider figure flaws. Good looking fabric, though. I'd do the straight trousers. Eager to see your make.

Lines and grids can definitely bring the eye to unwanted areas, however, I find that if the grid or stripe is small or busy enough it actually works to camouflage areas. I will definitely be utilizing some tummy control (probably with power mesh) as knit pants can definitely be more clingy!
