Taking advantage of sales--that's the way to do it!! I really like Story of the World books, but I didn't know it was integrated into My Father's World.

Wow! that is a lot of books in the 8th Grade level, they seem amazing beautiful good books! I love that you include the Bible in your study, he even has a church hymn book! That's wonderful. Thanks for sharing! I'm inspired. All the best to his study, and stay blessed.

We are finishing up this year of MFW! It's a great year. We ditched GATHOA about halfway through. My personal advice is to switch botany lessons for the first part of the school year when the weather is better, do zoology during winter, and finish botony at the end of the year. My oldest is moving on to Tapestry of Grace for high school next year. He has already read sone of the MFW 9th grade selections via AmblesideOnline, and we also just didn't care for MFW high school, which uses Notgrass. We ready have everything picked out, but we order through a homeschool group, and they place orders July 1st. We typically have our orders by the end of July. My 9th grader will also use ACE biology (the 4th edition is nice, and the labs are very well done in free videos online), and Lifepac LA and Geometry. For the others, I'm using a mixture of AmblesideOnline, A Gentle Feast, and MFW lol! But sticking with Abeka for their math and LA. If I had to pick a box curriculum, I'd choose MFW, with Abeka math and LA for K-3, then ACE or Lifepacs for math and LA (we have 5 children and no computer, so this helps us a lot!).

MFW with Abeka for LA and Teaching Textbooks for Math has been my favorite combo so far. MFW is a great box curriculum for sure. My kids are super into history, so that's a huge plus for our family with MFW. Apologia is great, we love their science programs. I haven't looked into High School as much with MFW, but I definitely will this year since 9th grade will be upon us soon!

How was Apologia’s Physical Science course? I have been searching for flip throughs & reviews, but there isn’t much out there on this level. Thanks! 😊

Those look like great books! We have also purchased everything for our upcoming year already. For my 5th grader we will be using Heart of Dakota for everything but math, grammar and writing. He’s using Teaching Textbooks, IEW and Easy Grammar. My kindergartener will also be using Heart of Dakota for most subjects except she’ll be using Math-U-See and All About Reading for math and phonics. This will be our first, full year homeschooling as we just started after Xmas break. I was torn between Heart of Dakota, MFW and Sonlight. I finally just took the plunge and went with HOD. I’m so excited!

I LOVE this video!! We are in NC, too and Love MFW. I have been homeschooling from Kindergarten through this year starting 8th grade! I was a nanny and daycare and preschool teacher and I didn't understand Charlotte Mason until we experienced it... and I Love it for the younger grades! But, I found the language arts for grammer and writing was not a fit for my daughter. She likes more straight forward and I also found she was lacking in grammer skills, since it was a more relaxed approach. So, I am looking for a supplement. Thank you so much for suggesting ABEKA! I grew up using Abeka in private Christian school so I know it works! I forgot about it. I also attended public school as well and tried to replicate that the first year of teaching kinder, I wish I could go back and fully embrace the Charlotte Mason method but I get a chance with my next daughter starting MFW kindergarten in a few weeks!!! So excited the 2nd time around. And I have a 3 year old boy who will do it when he starts school and I can see he is the type that will like Charlotte Mason style. It does mix Classical style , too which I like. Thanks for the videos and help even for this moderately experienced homeschool mom, I'm always aiming to learn more and grow in this homeschooling journey. Sometimes I have a fear of change so you gave me the courage, if it's not working to find what does!

Mandy, as a former public school teacher , I appreciate your reviews and advice. Would you still recommend MFW today for my 8th grade son, or any 8th grader whom may or may not go back to public in 9th grade??

We are going to be using MFW as well! We’ll be using the elementary Adventures in US History for my upcoming 3rd grader, 1st grader, and Kindergartener. It’s meant for grades 2-3 but we’ll be adapting when necessary so they can all stay together. We just had baby #5 a week ago and Mama needs kiddos to be working together as much as possible! We love MFW! We’ve used all of the orange levels except for Adventures. Not sure if we’ll continue on to the Family Cycle or not but I’m excited to see how you like this. There need to be more MFW middle and high school videos out there!

Kathryn Rouse I totally agree! I can find videos for ECC and below, but anything above (around 1850 levels) is hard to find. I’ll be creating them as we go along, because we love MFW and I’m pretty sure we will be sticking with them for a while. I love the cycles involved with it.

Congratulations, Kathryn! Our 5th is 5 months old :) Adventures is very adaptable for K and 1st! We swapped some of the EAH readings for D'Aulaire's living books (George Washington, Pocahontas, etc.) Adventures is a fun year. The state study can be a bit boring, so I recommend finding RU-vid videos on each state, or the state bird/flower etc.

I love seeing others choices! We will be starting in July with pk, , 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th graders and a three old old running about. I have ordered for next year. We will be continuing family style for history, bible, science, and extras (Notgrass Our Star Spangled Story with literature pack, Karyn Henley Sword Fighting Devotional and Day by Day kids bible and My First Hymnal, NA Woychuk ABC Memory Book, Apologia Astronomy with both notebooking journals, YWAM missionary biographies - Amy Carmichael, William Carey, Mary Slessor, and Corrie Ten Boom with activity guide, Teach Them Spanish K, Sharon Jeffus Art Through the Year). Easy Peasy for Math. Bob books and Classic Starts for reading. I think they will be getting enough LA through science and history but I may add some phonics and grammar discussion during history and science.

I’m only homeschooling one so far, and he is my oldest going into first grade. We are doing abeka for language arts because I love thei phonics. He is starting to read now which is amazing. For math we are doing horizons. We will do more unit studies for science and history. For Bible we are doing some devotionals, we will memorize a Bible verse every week, and I want to work on the books of the Bible. My biggest focus is still math, reading, writing.

I'm new to homeschooling actually going to start 2020-2021, I seen your masterbook vs. Abeka video which opened my eyes to Masterbook. But you haven't mentioned that in this video. If I may why are you not using masterbooks, I only ask to because I was set on doing abeka for all my children but for price thought I'd try masterbooks for the younger ones.

Courtney Johnson I like Masterbooks, but my kids really wanted MFW this year. There’s a few reasons why we switched. I love the cycle system with MFW, starting in 3rd-4th grade. They learn a huge chunk of history each year, going in a timeline format. They memorize scripture, focusing on one book of the Bible each school year. We loved that aspect of it. Everything is interwoven. So the history curriculum is woven throughout every other subject, so it expands upon the time period they are learning about. It’s more pricey, but you can buy used sets on Facebook and eBay for a great price! It’s such a thorough and rich curriculum, my kids can’t wait to start. If you’d like, I can make a video about why we chose MFW and I can expand further upon each point.

@@mandy-maltz Thank you for that answer. I'm just trying to find the best option for my kids. They are currently in our church school that is using LFBC and I'm just not happy at all with that curriculum. I also went through it and I don't think it's been updated at all since then. I'm going to do Abeka Acedemy for my oldest (8th) and was leaning toward masterbooks for my girls (2nd and 4th) since this will be the first year. Just to see how we like it.

Courtney Johnson I considered Abeka Academy for my oldest as well for high school. I think we’re going to do MFW instead, but I may end up back there. I love how MFW lays out high school. My youngest would hate the Academy, it’s not his style at all. At the end of the day, it’s about what’s best for your kids and family 🥰

@@mandy-maltz Up until about a month ago I really didn't even know of any other circuluim aside from what they use now and Abeka. It's just hard starting something new I guess. I don't want to make a huge life decision and it not be right for them. I don't really know what their learning style is because they've only ever done what they do now. Which I personally free is read this answer this and they are not retaining the information because it's not interesting to them. Anyways thank you for your videos and input. It helps having someone whose been there to talk to.

Mandy, I thought about MFW for my 6th and 7th graders, but the type A in me wants to finish the 4 year cycle. Do you plan to finish the cycle? Will you put your 8th grader in MFW high school cycles?
@mandy-maltz
@mandy-maltz 4 года назад
I'll be starting the 4 year cycle with my youngest this year, watch my upcoming video on his. I'm soooo type A as well, I totally get that. If my 8th grader enjoys MFW this year, I think we will go into the HS cycle. I love the idea of cycles, and MFW looks like a good 4 year cycle. My husband and oldest are really into history, so I think it might be a really good fit for him.
