In this video, I talk about and demonstrate my favorite paint, which is gouache. I show my current gouache supplies and work completed using this medium both in sketchbooks and on paper. I also swatch a few of the various brands in my abstract sketchbook.
I love gouache because it is so versatile- it is my go-to for a painting session as it is easy to clean up and works in all my different sketchbooks.

I like the portrait of you with the blue background . I knew it was you so you did capture yourself. 😊 You should see mine lol , it looks like an alien lol.

I love gouache! I used to use M. Graham and it is lovely, but I had problems with stickiness and mold, and I've also had problems with Schmincke molding (in dry palettes). I'm now using Holbein and have ordered W&N and Daniel Smith's new gouache. I've heard that Daniel Smith rewets really well. My next experiment is using the different brands fresh. I really loved that little square sketchbook of you W&N landscapes - really lovely work!

Hi Cindy - I did not know about Daniel Smith ( dangerous for me - sounds tempting lol) that’s interesting re M graham and schmincke - I’ve only got the white in m graham , if gets mold might just stick with W&n and Holbein - thanks ! And thanks for sharing your findings!!!

I don't have a lot of experience with gouache, but you always inspire me to try something different. I think I made a mistake buying the himi set, i haven't even open them because i fear they will all turn into bricks before i use them up. They remind me of the poster paint pots from high school 😅 Thank you for sharing with us and explaining the difference. 😊

I hear you with your fears for himi - I know it is so personal - paint preference , I just love their forgiving nature, the fact you can layer on top and use thick and thin. Obviously this was just a personal video- there are lots more technical ones that explain the binders and properties.

If some manufacturer figures out how to make Granulating gouache they will rule the world! (of gouache) Your gouache sketches are inspiring as I’ve been struggling with ‘rules’ which vary drastically from one artist to the next. Love the idea of using up the paint. Thanks P.S. Daniel Smith is making Gouache and Sarah Burns said they were good. Oh oh….

Thank you - I know my way is not prehaps great technique, but I feel I’ve found ways of using gouache that work for me - it is my favourite paint medium because it is so versatile

Hi - I still like that painting, unfortunately don’t have any nicely shaped soap bars any more- would have to find some photo refs

Holbein and Turner are my favs. W&N, I haven't used much at all. Ive heard Shin Han makes good gouache too.

Hi Sonia! I’m trying to get into Gouache and got myself some w&N and ShinHan pass hybrid. But I’m a bit scared of it 😅, the blending, layering… how did you learn gouache? Just trial and error? Any book recommendations? Thanks. X. Love your videos as always.

thank you - ok truthfully it was years ago now- I think I experimented - some watercolor books contain sections on gouache, and probably a good few tutorials here on you tube. I feel you will find ways that suit you , try it thin and then the opposite very thick ,not much water. I add a lot of white to increase opaqueness and like how you can add lighter areas on dark ( and vice versa) I can do a video with the different ways I use it (no expert but found ways that enjoy)
