Sharing sketchbook tours and art tips. Thanks to a drawing-a-day project back in 2015, which I documented on Instagram, I returned to a regular drawing practice after a long hiatus. The last 8 years have had their bumps but I have completed a large number of sketchbooks, and have seen the benefit of making art a priority again. I hope this is a good place to give back and share my thoughts on creativity. I want to share sketchbook tours, process videos and maybe some vlogs to illustrate how I make art and get inspiration. I know how easy it is to get into a creative rut, or lose motivation, so my aim is to provide some tips and tricks to aid you in finding creative flow.
I finally had a chance to watch this. I love the way your heads turn out and I'm terrible at drawing faces. The different colors make the drawings so much more interesting -- I'm going to give this a try.
This was so refreshing just getting to enjoy the art and sound of pages turning 🙂 no annoying repetitive music going in back like lots of people seem to do. Totally enjoyed this.
@@rachelleandrichard the worst is when they're talking with the music on. I want to hear what's being said but can't stand the "noise" so just turn it to something else.
I will try! there are definitely a lot of layers in this one- watered down acrylics and acrylic ink worked well on these pages- I like to let some of the drawings come through
@@soniabrittain thanks 🙏 I got some issues with neo color 2 crayons as they are too fatty to draw on top of. They also react with water based mediums… if you have some tech tips for layering in a next video and feel like talking about it or show some of your favorite ways to work with these Neo col.2’s… that would be fab 🤩👍
I really like your portrait. For me they are perfect. The colors choices, the style, the fact that you cover them up with other portrait. I feel it’s your best work ❤
thank you I appreciate it as this is a special sketchbook for me- I haven't altered a sketchbook that I put so much work into like this before but I feel I have found some more interesting ways of pushing figurative art to make it interesting to me again.
I don’t see your drawings as wrong I see them as interesting, lets face it if we want a good shot we take a photograph don’t we, I love the way they are, remedy the eyes by painting your eyes first, then if you hate them you can start again. Can’t imagine you would hate them because all your self portraits are really great. Thanks Sonia.
Wow! I absolutely love love love your portraiture work!! It’s so loose and fun and experimental, love everything about it, especially your self portraits! That first one with the yellow background, is everything!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this sketchbook tour with us!
Thank you! I fins it hard sometimes to talk about my work, by this point some of my themes are repetitive but I do feel I found some new ways of working in this sketchbook and it will inspire further work
What a fabulous sketchbook tour! I love your layering process with drawings layered over drawings, and drawing over paint. I’m feeling very inspired! Thanks for sharing!
So happy to see your sketchbook tour today. I love them so much. You make art so much fun. I have not done any artwork in about a month. We moved down the road and it has been keeping me busy. I need to do something even if it is a scribble or whatever. Thank you for inspiring me Sonia. ❤😊
You’re welcome! Glad to hear it's a motivator to get back into making art! Moving is stressful - and can imagine it is hard to find time while you sort stuff out. Hope you get settled in soon!
Lovely portraits! I’ve done what you did, sticking my daughter’s drawings in my sketchbook. I came across one recently where she had drawn our family and made her older brother look like a massive balloon with huge cheeks sticking out each side. It was an ongoing joke between them at the time! So funny how it brought back memories!😂
do give it ago - my first attempts were horrible but I learnt what paper worked for me and mediums that i also enjoy using in this way- it is a good way of experimenting , and some of the techniques i now also do in blank sketchbooks
Wow, thank you! really appreciate it - sometimes feel its my motivation to make content that fluctuates more than the art making! but knowing there is inspiration for others in my videos is a big motivation
Another great video Sonia, thanks for sharing your process! You’ve mentioned other YT artists that you like to watch and podcasts you enjoy, could you share some of them with us? As you are inspirational to me, I am interested in who inspires you 👩🏼🎨
Hi , problem is a lot seem to stop, understandably - feel like i'm listening to a lot of psychology and book podcasts at the moment , but I do love Gaynor Pattle and Helen Wells :)
Hey thank you , I did one a while ago I for the local art nonprofit, but I might do a new session for Patreon and sell it individually in my Patreon shop . Cheers !
Kissho brand doesn't list the English color names on the back of the pan like Kuretake does? Unlike Kuretake, Kissho has a separate set of their Lumi (neon) colors which I'm tempted to buy. Have you tried the Neon colors in your set yet?
Yes , they are very nice !!!! I think I got a Mozart neon set too which are good - I love neons - had no idea about names on back of pans , thanks , just checked - still in Japanese but with a number of, maybe I could find out on a site- saying that I kind of like grabbing colours haphazardly :)
They look gorgeous and I love your paintings with them! Sadly your Amazon link tells me they don’t deliver to the UK.😕 I wonder if the Kuretake ones are as good? x
Sorry to hear that - so I got the kuretake first and they are great !!! Also if not sure check out Mozart 40 colors- here they are $20 and fine for playing around
this is a fantastic video! love your vases and vessels, and the 'imaginary landscape' you painted is so wonderful. you got an amazing sky so quickly! yours is the first review of gansai paints that made me seriously consider getting some. and i agree... i don't mind buckling and/or unexpected results at all! it's what i love about all water media. :)
Thanks - I really struggled with these at first till I learnt to loosen up and just play with them my way , I think Mozart does a very reasonably priced set 40 colors around $20 , I still use those - also can sometimes get good offers on a smaller kuretake set , but now I know I like them really enjoying a larger set -
Hi, enjoyed this review. Have such a huge quantity of acrylic, bought when couldn’t lay all my stuff out and see wot I had, that I feel reluctant to buy at moment. If I was to buy more think I might go for gouache for vibrancy and opacity. Do you know of a good set. I love your bright colours so much. I live in uk and it is grey and muddy enuf here. But of course you remember that well. Best r
Thanks for sharing!- don’t tempt me with acrylics , trying to use up my old supplies of that. I love gouache definitely my favorite paint overall, I got into it via winsor and newton designer gouache , which used to be reasonably priced and great quality in uk , here I found some Holbein on offer also gouache. Got some Arteza as cheaper and thus more comfortable using in loose sketchbook work and for covering large areas. Also like turner acrylic gouache - get both the acrylic and gouache quality, occasionally you can find really good deals on this on Amazon but it has gone back up a lot again ! Happy painting
Thank you - best to just launch in , I think there may be a process video a while ago showing my gouache landscape process, somewhere in my video library!!! to be honest wasn’t sure how much interest there was in process videos here and have been keeping them more for my Patreon content.
Amazing portrait Sonia! It reminds me a little of an artist I loved when I was younger, the Welsh artist Shani Rhys James, maybe it’s way you’ve applied the paint, it’s fantastic! x
I’ve been watching you for a while now and I really want to thank you so much 🙏 for being so open showing all your work - it has all really inspired me to loosen up and just have fun with my art - I LOVE you oil pastel portrait today - hardly ever see oil pastel being done and I’d really like to see more 😊
You are so welcome- hoping by probably oversharing on art , can show I have a lot of hits and a lot misses too !!! You just never know what you might end up with - definitely feel I’m starting to see the benefit of putting the time in , in terms of getting to know my own tastes and what processes I enjoy
Thank you - I really like that Palm Springs one, it is definitely one of my better gouache landscapes of late, had a lot of fun last week with regards to art !
I really like your art and find it so inspiring. Some video feedback though, it’s difficult to take it in with your hands constantly moving around in front of the images and pages.
So glad! Yay that was the aim -hope everyone is getting in their creativity !! I feel it does help with dealing with the daily hassles or chores if you can scratch that itch
