Sorrow and Bliss was on my best books of 2022 list too. White Ivy sounds interesting!

I love the sentence as well. I’m a new subscriber checking out your channel because I watch your mom. I probably could be your grandmother😊 Aloha

Great Circle! Sorrow & Bliss!! Two of my favorites of the year as well! White Ivy is on my shelf and now I feel like I have to bump it up on my priority list! Also I've been wanting to read How the Word is Passed for months and after watching this, I immediately checked the audiobook out from my library! I also really want to read Trust after you raved about it so much last year! I love this list so much! 2023 is the 10th anniversary of my channel as well! Crazy!

I'm glad you ended up enjoying How the Word is Passed and got to it sooner based on my recommendation! :)

Welcome to the east coast (I'm in PA)! You really sold me on The Sentence. I had heard a lot of reviewers say they would've loved it if not for the pandemic stuff, but you made it sound like a strength of the novel. And you've increased my excitement for Realm of the Elderlings!! I'm starting the first trilogy hopefully in the summer once I get through some other chunky books that have been on my TBR forever.

Yes, the pandemic stuff is essential for the novel. I believe I heard somewhere that Erdrich began writing the novel in real time, not knowing what was to come. She just set out to capture a year and let the events guide her novel. And what a year to choose! I understand people not wanting to read about the pandemic and relive that trauma, but it was how well she captured the distinct feeling of early pandemic life that made the book really stand out for me.

I just checked Libby for How the Word is Passed, expecting a several-month waitlist and was pleasantly surprised to see it’s available to borrow now! Can’t wait to check it out. I also placed Sorrow and Bliss on hold based on your recommendation from a previous video but I still have ~19 weeks to wait for that. I’m sure it will be worth the wait! Thanks for the recommendations!

I'm glad you can get to How the Word is Passed right away, and I hope you enjoy! 19 weeks is a long time for Sorrow and Bliss. I hope it is well worth the wait. Thank you for your comment :)

Sold me on Sorrow and Bliss. My daughter is bipolar, and I just keep trying to understand aspects of it. Once I think I’m getting close I realize I’m not. Thank you so much!

One of the more interesting parts of Sorrow and Bliss is that her mental illness isn't given a specific diagnosis, but I think in part that helps people identify and empathize with it more broadly. I hope it brings some clarity to you!

I love Saunders but have been holding off on this one for fear of not being as familiar with the source materials but you may have influenced me to prioritize ☺️

I was not familiar with any of the stories and had never read any of those authors previously. I thought it was a nice introduction to Russian lit :)

I loved Paper Palace as well! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really recommend Round House by Louise Endrich. Fantastic book!

I have The Round House (and I have for ages). I'm weirdly intimidated by it but I shouldn't be!

My favorites last year were The Sentence and How the Word Is Passed. My close third was Firekeeper's Daughter. I am currently reading Assassin's Quest and finding it tiresome compared to the first two. I have to check out the books on your list that topped my favorites!

I really enjoyed Firekeeper's Daughter when I read it too! And yeah, Assassin's Quest is a slog. My least favorite in the series so far. Would have been much better if it wasn't so repetitive!
