Fun Fact: The song 'Video Killed the Radio Star' was inspired by one of Ballard's short stories.

Hi - I live in Portland, Oregon where we have Powell's Books. A glorious place - 3 locations in fact. It's a place where you can find new and used books side by side. I went today to sell books - you know, to make money and room for more books. With my store credit I got White Oleander (used, hardback) and The Passion According to GH (new, paperback). With more store credit to use next time. Thanks for the inspiration.🥰

Great video. I almost lost it when you showed your copy of "Of Mice and Men" because I grew up seeing that copy on my brother's bookshelf; that, and "The Pearl" from the same publisher. "The Pearl" is another tiny book you need to read with a box of tissues near you. This winter, the 3 best books I read were "Sula" by Toni Morrison, "Parable of the Sower" by Octavia Butler and "Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann. I loved the book much more than the movie. PS: I liked that final Jack Nicholson stare down.

Like you, I was all in with The Shards until, at a certain point, credulity was stretched way beyond the breaking point and from that juncture it became a 600 page, this is silly, eye roll. The very Gena Rowlands drunken mother scene at the beginning did provoke a kind of nostalgia. There was something about the book that felt like a Mike Nichols or Paul Mazursky film. I can’t decide whether this is hackneyed or retro.

I finished House of Leaves a week ago. I gave myself permission to skim or skip certain footnotes and footnoted chapters if the words did not contribute to the "main" storyline. I thought about the book for two days afterwards, it had a lingering effect on me that was oddly soothing. Yes, that $12 Million Stuffed Shark book needs an update with more recent stats and examples... and either a new book focused on digital art or have a new section about it. Imagine the intro to NFTs.
@AnaWallaceJohnson
@AnaWallaceJohnson 3 месяца назад
Oh wow, yeah House of Leaves is up there for me. I don’t hate fractured storytelling like that, but when I’m twisting my book around in public, I might feel silly.

Just a Brooklyn boy. Always merry and bright. Henry Miller, Tropic of Capricorn (not Cancer) is the best "transgressive" and one of the holiest books I've read. It's arse-tarnishingly pathetic and real, passionate, intelligent, fantastic, revelatory, excoriating, paradoxical, surreal, pelagic, legendary, fabulous, funny and sad. White Oleander is on my list. Oleanders growing outside her door Soon they're gonna be in bloom up in Annandale I can't stand her Doing what she did before Living like a gypsy queen in a fairy tale Well, I hear the whistle but I can't go, I'm gonna Take her down to Mexico, she said oh no Guadalajara won't do

You talking about loving Steve Jobs brings back memories of my opposite feeling of him, he was a horrible person. I grew up in the Southbay (Silicon Valley) and he had a horrible reputation back in the 80s and into the early 2000s of degrading people and discarding his daughter.
@AnaWallaceJohnson

I guess I didn’t love him, but more admired him as a kid. Then I got older and realized he was definitely void of any emotion. But there’s still a part of me that is fascinated by him (maybe that says something about me!)

GOSH I would love to join your cult... If I ever have a regular job then you will be the first person I pay on patreon without a doubt! In the meantime I may as well ramble about what books I am reading right now... I am currently reading the first volume of Marcel Proust's "On the Path of Lost Time" which is SO DIFFICULT but very very good. I did not realise it was 12 volumes long... yikes! I just read Just Kids by Patti Smith (because of you!) and I think it was a canon event for my existence... GOSH. I am now trying to put more collaborative art in my life! I also got a major kick out of the Albanian "Agamemnon's Daughter" by Ismail Kadare, which was super super fun and that I highly recommend (Two novellas about the Albanian dictatorship). I have recently been sent the book "The Monkey's Mask" by Dorothy Porter, a lesbian detective verse novel which I hope to read as soon as possible, but I must finish Proust's volume for class. Also! I bought my first non-school play because of you! Phaedra's Love by Sarah Kane which promises to be horrifying. I would like to one day write an essay about Phaedra and feminine abuse and how her character has been depicted between the Greek antique and us. I would like you to know that my being subscribed to you has drastically widened my literary comfort zone and I could not be more grateful. (By the way, I sent you a friend request on Goodreads where I am Sophie Eikli. It's totally up to you if you accept it or not haha.)
