It's May at the ‪@crrm‬ once again, which means the annual (for the 2nd time... lol!) Colorado Crossings event, which features special trains from Colorado. This go around involves a lot of neat switching moves, and a lot of nuances to them. Let's experience it from the cab!

It was not only an honor, but an absolute pleasure getting to watch you run 491. It was amazing getting to see you do something that you genuinely enjoy and love. The smoothness and precision that you had running that locomotive was astounding! Standing behind you I couldn't even feel when you connected to those coaches, the stops were like butter, and no one could not wipe the smile off your face if they tried! Thank you for another amazing video, a wet t-shirt, and everything that you do. Sorry for totally photo bombing the video btw lol

favorite Highlights "next time on K-37 Kitchen, K-37 Sandwich, I am the meat" 12:56 looks like Peaches is Getting a little cranky, it's definitely nearing her nap time "She'll tell you what she wants" And every second of hearing #20, The Angry Elf, Barking at that train, and Working as hard as she can! it sounds amazing, Every time I hear a Steam Loco REALLY put their back into what it is they were built to do is always a lovely sounding experience, It's Like they're happy when they work like that, and that makes me happy to think about This whole event was wonderful to watch from your POV, and seeing the more technical aspects of it, like the Careful Coupling of the Business cars and Becoming a Sandwich, and hearing about the careful "Bites" of the throttle Thank you Hyce, Again, this was great to watch!

Beebe & Clegg, quite the characters they were, or so I've read. Funnily enough, at the the California State Railroad Museum (where I volunteer), we have their first private car: Georgia Northern #100 "The Gold Coast." Talk about a yacht/mansion on wheels! The car actually has a great deal of significance to the creation of the museum. In the 1970s, then-CA Governor Ronald Reagan was initially opposed to the concept of a railroad museum owned, operated, and funded by the State. It was a dinner hosted in the Gold Coast by officials from the Locomotive & Railway Historical Society that convinced him to support the idea.

I certainly wouldn’t have guessed that fine switching moves with a superheated steam loco and a traditional trolley car would require the same motions. Take a point of power, back to coast, take a point, back to coast, etc until you grab a little brake and stop. Sounds like it’s for the same reasons, too, as both types of machine want to take off a bit too fast on those low power settings. Very cool!

@3:29 : And THAT, that whole segment starting from that point ladies and gentlemen, is how a steam engine should sound! Hard at work! Awesome stack-talk from 491 and especially from ole Number 20. If she doesn't sound like those two did, you ain't running her right. A beautiful soundscape, half a century in the making. And Hyce, my complements on your engine running skills. Hi Mark your video was wonderful on so many levels! Watching you operate 491 is an absolute fab educational experience. As you describe the required technique for the needed operation then gets me to analyze the individual steps you take to make things happen. And thanks to your previous tutorials, observing the breaking and signaling and understanding what all that is pays off. The sights and sounds are beautiful! How cool it is for the CRRM to celebrate the work of Beebe and Clegg (both so interesting but sad too). I wondered who got to dress up, 😂. But seriously that was a perfect period touch. Thank you Professor for making another first-rate video and showing us the fun of a Colorado Crossings event! The next best thing to being there. And yes, please share more of these. Cheers!

very cool and what a contrast in the guy known for "giving it the beans" in Derail Valley with a long consist of Splodey Bois. It's hard to imagine a massively heavy metal machine moving delicately, but hearing you explain and then watching you tap-tap-tap the throttle and watching the gravel railbed behind some metal bracket on the train and seeing it just imperceptively start to drift forward...I've got less fine control on a bicycle.

Should I ever take a look on the other side of the pond I'll absolutely have to visit you there. Even after all that time of watching your channel it's still amazing how … exotic all this still is to me as an European railwayman. After all it's nearly two centuries of virtually independant development. Here in Europe the railways of different countries are still very different to each other, but certain things just go again, certain conventions, certain influences. Things I take as given - and then I see a whole different world in your videos. Doesn't get old.
