Fence stretcher. A must to have in every farm truck. I used mine today. The splices work really good too with the stretcher. Not too expensive. And there are different sizes for different wire. Maybe a little quicker

Thank you for taking the time and making the effort to create this video. I retired and moved from the city to the country. When I say country, I mean, my neighbors are cows. I had to replace 125' feet of fence and did NOT know how to use the wire stretcher. Now I KNOW! Thanks again.
@rustnguts337
@rustnguts337 4 года назад
They work great but I think you’ll find it easier to release the stretcher at the end by taking the handle and pulling it down to the parallel position as if you were going to slide it along the track. That way you’re still holding each end if something pops loose ,it’s less likely to explode in your face. Either method works but I do it that way so I don’t lose an eye in the process. Great videos, keep em coming! 😊👍🏻

I came to the comments section to say the same thing. Also this method of splicing is more prone to failure as he is putting kinks in the wires by bending them over themselves like that.

The ol Fence stretcher, there aughta be one of them in the back of every ranchers ATV, You maybe know this but you can release tension without releasing the wire so you don't possibly get smacked in the face with a rogue wire. take the handle all the way back opposite of the tensioning direction and that should release it, the one I have has a secondary lock so I have to pull some tension then release that secondary lock and pull the handle back and it releases. Good video though man, congrats on almost 10k, look forward to the live stream. Have a great day.

Great tool. I took a 5 inch piece of 5/8 mild steel rod, flattened one end with a hammer, drilled a hole the barbed wire fits thru easily. After you get the wire ready to roll around ( I cut one barb out with diagonal pliers ) run the barbed wire thru the hole and proceed to twist around the piece as usual. Makes a tight coils close together fence mender. Now you have to hold the splice with fencing pliers while doing the twisting. I have one with a smaller hole for woven wire. They work great and slide easily into a back pocket. The rod can be bought at Lowe’s in I think 3 foot sections. Great stocking stuffers for Real farmers with the extra rod lol. Seriously Tyler make a couple you won’t regret it. 1/2 rod will work. I just subscribe to a little bigger in tool material is usually better. I know you do too. I’ve watched too many videos. Later Brother. And around here we always called it a barbed wire stretcher and everyone knows what your talking about. Might just be ny area idk

We use those in Australia too. You can actually purchase them in rural supply stores and I think they are known as "twisties". Always handy for plain wire repairs as well. They certainly save your fingers. As you say Keith they are also very easy to make and you can have a couple of hole sizes for different wire gauges.

pretty good presentation, ... I have the "Golden Rod" fence stretchers which I much prefer. You can release them much slower so the wire doesn't pop back from the tension. I'm not sure I agree with hammering those tabs lose.

Good morning from South Korea. Thanks for the video. We're going to be fencing our farm in the Philippines with six strands of barbed wire. We will certainly be picking up a wire stretcher as well as some other fencing tools. Fencing 6 hectares of rolling, hilly, jungle-farm is quite a production. We used 8 foot concrete posts buried 3 feet in the ground. The posts were all carried by hand through our 1000 rubber tree forest and up the hillsides. My hat was certainly off to the team setting the posts. Congrats on your 9.4K subs. You're almost to the 10K mark. Hopefully you'll do some live streams on the weekend so I can jump in. We're 16 hours ahead of Cali time. Cheers and God Bless. ~Mike and Ester~

Thinking back to fence and gairdrail days as a union iron worker. The tools - come along with two line dogs. Line dog sizes vary but for bw size of plam, it is a cable pulling clamp with a spring tension. Used for phone, electric, cable, lines to pull slack out line. Would work without investing $ in speciality tool.

Yep, those wire stretchers work really well. A little heavy tho when you have to walk long fence lines with no access with your truck. A hammer and and good set of pliers work just as well. You still gotta carry that wire spool. I used to forget my gloves too. Ya get used to it and being careful.
@poblanomanu2b
@poblanomanu2b 4 года назад
I didn’t say how to use the hammer. Make a loop on one end of the broken wire (shorter one is better). Splice your new wire, same length as Tyler, to the other end like Tyler finishes the splice. Put the end of your new wire through your loop and bend it gently back toward the splice. Then take the claw of your hammer and put it around the second to last barb on your new wire and lay the narrow part of the hammer head on your wire and start winding. When it’s really tight, give your hammer a good jerk to make a bend at the loop. Holding the wire tight with the hammer, start wrapping your wire around the newly stretched wire until you know it will hold. Then you can unwind the wire from the hammer and wrap it so it’s not sticking out. You can get it just as tight as the stretchers with practice. ... Well, I suppose most people can get everywhere with an ATV but I didn’t have one and lots and lots of fence to fix so I liked the hammer better. A lot lighter walking all day.

I have one of these tools and never knew it could be used on barbed wire mine is just called a fencing tool but it is awesome on normal wire it pulls it real tight but on wooden posts you have to be careful i have almost pulled it out of the ground concrete and all

Tyler, do you cut those little ended barb wire pieces off when your done? The way they stick out away from the horizontal wire makes them look like they could cut you or and animal. Just wondering 💭

In all my years of farming and doing miles miles of fence both barbed wire and red top fencing I have never seen one of those. We always used a barbed wire stretcher which works a lot of the same way yours does it's just way smaller you can put it in the palm of your hand any how we used that and a ratchet strap and pretty much do the same thing that you did. And of course every time you do a splice that will always be the tightest stretch of wire when your done lol. Great video on the safety and how to on barbed wire great job man. Where can you find that tool and how much would one cost I wonder? Looking forward to your live stream if I am not too busy in the field I will try to catch it have a great day

You push back on your handle the opposite way of tightening. It takes a little force

Tyler, It’s a wire stretcher. BTW, that type of splice is precisely what my dad taught me was the WRONG way to splice (about 55 years ago!). The new loops you created are now the weakest link in your fence; one of them will eventually rust through and break, and you’ll be back there to splice it again. It is much stronger to simply wrap 6-8” of both wires together, like you did behind the loops. That way, the stress is spread across that entire wrap, rather than all on the end of the loop where you initially kinked it at approximately 90 degrees. Doug from Strawberry Point. 🤓
