The Cushman 12" direct mount solid steel 4 jaw would be my first choice and with an ER40 collet adapter would handle most any job on the 1941, 14 X 30 Axelson gear head lathe. Because of the age of the machine the spindle was not ground in place resulting in about .0004" spindle nose run out causing .003" run out on the rim of the 12" chuck that should be easily corrected with a file and perhaps a scraper on the flat mounting face of the chuck in the next video.

Hi Don, good to see you back in operation, glad the batteries came in useful. I have that same chuck on my R-15 Sheldon. It's a beast. I like the slots for bolting counterweight for odd shaped parts.

Hi warren thanks again for the power up! The last gear head lathe I had came with one of these chucks, I was relieved to find another, I think they are the best for the size.

Glad you got batteries! I'm curious as to how you acquired your love of accuracy. Was there a particular time, or moment, when you decided not to work around lesser tolerances?

Hi, I just found this. I picked up on the close tolerances working in hydraulics using the Crane Lapmaster lapping machine for rebuilding rotating piston group hydrostatic transmissions, the sliding valving plates are lapped and measured in light bands for flatness using an optical quartz flat under monochromatic light.

Cushman sure made some darn nice iron back in the day, restored a couple for my shop. Looks like you’ve got a nice shop, thanks for sharing. Keep it up!

I think this model was the best one for the heavy duty lathes and maybe the best buy out here now, thanks

Getting caught up, but a break from it was great! Sick chucks can get well.

I have a 10" and a 12" Bison 4 jaw with T slots that both were bought for around £250 used and both had done no work, one a direct D1-6 mount, the other a DIN mount that uses the same taper mount so If I drill, tap and fit a set of cam pins it will be a D1-6, plus my new lathe came with a very nice 10" Pratt Burnerd 4 jaw and I have another but a plain back if I ever need it could get a backplate and be used, but it can be clamped down to the Bridgport table as is for work holding. 4 jaw chucks are really easy to find in good condition. I have 2 others for sale currently and a 16" that I have no current need but it was too cheap to not have. Thats 4 10", 2 12" and 1 16" 4 jaw chuck. 21:14

Chucks can be really hard to find at times in my area, but I think I am in good shape now. I have not tried a Bison 4 jaw yet.

There is some difficult aspects selling such a contraption to anyone not knowing all of the maintenance required.

I'm a big fan of collet tooling mounted in the lathe chuck also. I tend to run ER32, just got a couple 5C blocks just for funsies but not used them yet. Happy to find your channel, thanks!

Hi, thanks for tuning in! I hope to save some time changing out the heavy chuck all the time.

@@deedeeindustrialsuperprecision I've been slumming it by mounting blocks etc in the 3jaw. weighs a flipping ton compared to the 4jaw so dont change it a lot. Running on a 1936 12" American Tool. gotta love the Axelson and L&S 🥰
