Finite and Infinite Games. I read it in 1986 in one sitting (it's not a long book) and have never totally stopped reading it. I have referred to it countless times. Quoted from it. Shared it. I have had many copies. A few got destroyed in a flood. Many I gave away. This book speaks to me like no other. It is my favorite book. Thank you, Professor Carse. RIP

This discussion is much appreciated, it clarify so much especially I'm not a native English speaker .. another thing, I read "antifragile" long before I read this book .. I find myself linking finite with fragile and infinite with antifragile.

if you like games, figure out how EVERY parable Recorded As Spoken Aloud By The Fellow We Know As Jesus Christ, Whose Original name' having meaning of The Whole World Being Blessed Through Isaac, As Told Abram., And Jacob Has Other interests as farmer merchant currently so absorbed overawed you might say, ignoring the people in the day, the night and The Sabbath, Even The Voice Of Our Lord ... competitive, bloodlust

years back I contacted the publisher to see if I could contact the author... men playing stuff games, blocked... poor finite not infinite moment Sojourners exist and pretend to have accessable wisdoms and inaccessable Source (like parables not Of God But of man)

probably some deep and high brainstorming what "game" began being a word, if it before the game was or if the word came into being, for the thing to be like a creature I suppose, can be determined meet help or of meet help .. We little children of His. Having An Only Father Seems Most Kind In An Infinite Fine Without End. Amen.

Thank you very much for this series of discussions based on books, very well made! The most fundamental book for me has been "The Book of Not Knowing", not very famous, maybe you might be interested in it for personal interest or future videos :)

🎯 Key Takeaways and for my quick navigation: ( hoping it might help someone ) 00:00 📚 *Introduction and Purpose of Podcast* - The host introduces the podcast, highlighting the opportunity to explore books and engage with social media. The focus is on revisiting old favorites and exploring new books. Sticky tabs in the mentioned book indicate its significance. The book discussed, "Finite and Infinite Games," offers a unique perspective, inducing mindfulness and a different worldview. 02:05 🎮 *Finite and Infinite Games Overview* - Distinction between finite and infinite games is introduced. - Finite games are played for the purpose of winning, while infinite games are played for the purpose of continuing the play. - Life activities are viewed as games, emphasizing the importance of recognizing whether one is engaged in a finite or infinite game. 03:15 🏁 *Characteristics of Finite and Infinite Games* - Finite games have rules, a defined way to win or lose, and are bounded. - Infinite games have no set endpoint, allowing them to be played indefinitely. - The mindset difference between finite and infinite players: winning vs. playing to keep playing. 05:02 🧠 *Choice, Rules, and Freedom* - Emphasis on the concept that players are not forced but choose to play games. - Rules are valid only when players freely choose to play by them. - The discussion of limitations being self-imposed and the importance of recognizing one's freedom to choose. 08:05 🚫 *Breaking Free from Finite Game Mindset* - Finite players may feel compelled to follow rules and believe they "must" do certain things. - Infinite players recognize the choices within the game, viewing rules more as guidelines. - Illustration of playing within chosen boundaries and questioning societal expectations. 11:05 🤹 *Playfulness and Infinite Games* - The significance of playfulness in infinite games is highlighted. - Being playful allows for openness to surprise and a positive approach to the unexpected. - The contrast between genuine playfulness and activities labeled as play but lacking consequence or novelty. 13:51 🎭 *Genuine Playfulness and Surprise* - The importance of surprise in infinite play and its absence signaling the end of a finite game. - Being genuinely playful means embracing the unexpected and staying open to possibilities. - The challenge of maintaining true playfulness amid societal expectations and structured forms of play. 15:13 ⚖️ *Power vs. Strength* - Power is associated with finite games, focusing on winning and settling past issues. - Strength, linked to infinite games, involves carrying the past into the future, showing its unresolved issues. - The idea that power is finite, measurable, and restricted, while strength is open and immeasurable. 17:18 🌐 *Freedom, Enemies, and Mutual Assurance* - The concept that freedom is not achieved by opposing others; freedom inherently affirms others. - The idea that seeing someone as an enemy limits one's own freedom. - Mutual assurance as a characteristic of true freedom within infinite play. 18:57 💰 *Wealth, Resources, and the Vicious Cycle* - Wealth and victory often lead to a perpetual cycle of proving oneself as a winner. - The more one wins, the more the failures of the past become invisible but continue to influence. - The distinction between finite games (with a completion criteria) and infinite games (with no end goal) in areas like education and wealth accumulation. 20:34 📚 *Education and Lifelong Learning* - Differentiating between school (finite play) and education (infinite play). - The characteristic of education as a continuous, never-ending process without a defined end goal. - Highlighting the contrast between finite goals (grades) and the continuous nature of true education. 21:41 🎓 *Finite Games: Societal Competition* - Education as a finite game. - Families treating themselves as competitive units. - The obsession with accolades in a limited, finite game of societal titles. 22:50 🌐 *Infinite Game: Beyond Boundaries* - Finite game limitations through boundaries. - Infinite players move towards the horizon, exploring new possibilities. - Perspective shift: Finite games operate within boundaries, infinite games create new visions. 24:29 ⌛ *Time in Finite and Infinite Games* - Finite games exist within time, with a set beginning and end. - Infinite players generate time, viewing each moment as a new beginning. - The contrast in how finite and infinite players perceive and utilize time. 27:39 🌿 *Nature and Control: Machine vs. Garden* - Distinguishing between the machine (mechanistic) and the garden (organic). - Finite game mindset: forcing control over nature. - The contradiction of vulnerability despite attempts to control natural processes. 31:31 🚗 *Travel: Genuine Exploration vs. Superficial Movement* - Superficial travel: moving without genuine exploration. - The impact of technology on the essence of travel. - True voyage involves discovering different perspectives, not just changing physical locations. 33:25 📖 *The Power of Stories: Resonance vs. Amplification* - Stories as myths: enduring strength through retelling. - Resonance vs. amplification in the spread of ideas. - The importance of organic resonance for powerful storytelling.

I'm trying to get through the audio version of this book. But it's narrative style is so dry. So I did a RU-vid search for some motivation and landed here. Thanks for the video!

I also posted a video about "Win-Win Utilitarianism" inspired by your/this review of "Finite & Infinite Games" on my RU-vid channel that you might find of interest. Thanks again!
