The concept of a Persona is an intriguing one to say the least. Being able to use your own willpower to manifest a powerful being to overcome the trials ahead in life is just awesome. From the humble beginnings in Revelations Persona / Persona 1, to the more specialized designs in Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, to the modern jump to 3d with Persona 3, to the added 3rd forms in Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal. There's a lot to love here, so prepare to hear me gush a lot.

i'm quite honestly surprised that Messiah, Satanael and Loki weren't mentioned in this video; they both have stellar designs that are ripe with symbolism. Although Messiah get's bonus points from me thanks to it's stellar combination of Thanatos' and Orpheus' design that really shows how the protagonist has grown.

Satanael and Loki weren't on because I don't really like how they visually look. Messiah not being here is definitely strange, but I attribute it to me not wanting it to be too long of a video combined with liking other Personas more.

Could you elaborate on the symbolism in Loki's and Satanael's design? I kind of see it for Satanael but I don't really get what Loki is symbolic of besides, you know, being a traitor god who was misunderstood.

the reason i don't answer myself is because it's been a while since i watched any persona 5 video essays and delving into the game myself as it is the first persona game i played and at the moment my least favourite of the modern personas.

I love how all the official artwork of Thanatos has him looming over the MC and or the cast of the game,. It's literally the weight of death looming over them at all times, out of sight.

The mask. Arsene had an amazing design with the wings that reference a thief’s coat, the top hat, the knife-heels… but in my opinion what brings the whole design together is the freaking mask.

Honestly P5 has definitely my favorite persona designs even if the second forms can be a little hit or miss, they’ve all just so cool and striking, unlike some of the persona 4 ones where I can barely even remember the names and what the second forms look like save for like Yosuke and Kanji’s P3 I can’t say for sure yet because it’s fresh in my mind rn but I will say that it’s weird how some characters ultimates have completely different designs and poses in their art like Caesar and Artemisia, while Trismegistus and Juno are more like the P4 brand of sharing the same silhouette and key art pose

Spoilers ahead - 3:58 Yeah about that. According to the sources Cendrillon is sort of the same to Sumire as her second awakening was done via Kasumi's spirit. Essentially it's the same thing as Yamaoka. Kasumi's spirit became Sumire's persona Cendrillon

About Izanagi's zipper, i found a dude on reddit who said this "If I were to make a guess, it's in reference to the Shinto act of Misogi, where you bathe yourself to purify the energies in your body, starting with your mouth and then your groin (yep). In Shintoism, Izanagi bathed himself after visiting the underworld, and as a result, 6 deities were born, most notably Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susano-o. " So i guess its that

I was 50/50 on mentioning this in the video as well lol Also was very close to putting Black Mark in over normal Mark at the beginning for a few frames, but my editing program crashed when I did so I forgot to put it back in.

The most interesting aspects of the P5 casts persona was more how the Persona and its lore fit into the users phantom thief outfit, but on their own the designs dont stand up as well compared to others

My top 3: 1: Hades (Persona 2: Innocent Sin) 2: Caesar (Persona 3) 3: Callisto (Persona 2: Eternal Punishment) While I do love all the persona design from Persona 5, I love the Robotic and surreal designs from 2 and 3.

P5 Astarte is really cool but I really enjoy the simplicity of Persona Trinity Souls Astarte. Spoilers for Persona Trinity Souls: Kanaru initially awakened to Astarte after Shin and the others help her overcome her Kagenuki/ Shadow extraction addiction. (It sorta resembles drugs or intercourse in the effect it leaves?) Kanaru also has a second persona known as Ashtoreth who is not a natural persona because Kanaru is a robot Astarte is awakened naturally by Kanaru while the artificial Ashtoreth is forcefully summoned by the villains controlling Kanaru. Ashtoreth is the corrupted interpretation of Astarte in the Bible because of the “there is no god but god” rule. It’s interesting how it relates a lot to Kanaru. It’s pretty sad that she died in Shin’s arms as she was programmed to deactivate after a certain time.

I'm glad to see Haru got the praise she deserves, and I completely agree that P5's designs rely heavily on liking their initial personas. For me, Captain Kidd, Carmen, Milday, Robin Hood and Cendrillon steal the show.

Some of my favourite designs are from Persona 5. I really love all of Joker's Personas, Arsense, Satanael and Raoul. But Loki and Johanna are amazing too. I mean, Johanna is a motorcycle, how cool is that? From the older games I really like Thanatos and Izanagi.

i think actually my favourite persona of all time is asterius from p4 arena. i have a soft spot for tsukiyomi as well (i play minazuki in that game) but asterius is just... such a well done representation of labrys' inner turmoil and self-hatred over the things she's been forced to do in her life. the minotaur as a mythological representation of her issues is such a totally on-point connection that i almost find ariadne disappointing in comparison. plus asterius/shadow labrys is such a smart way of designing a berserk form for shabrys that both makes sense and feels narratively well done while still working in a fighting game. no notes, absolutely love this giant bull

I would say my favourite persona in the series is Fafnir from p5 (not sure if it’s a royal exclusive or not) but it has by far my favourite design especially with how mechanical yet organic it looks

Honestly i wish Orpheus Izanagi and Arsene (sorry p1 and 2 i still haven't experienced you yet) grew along with the story so they weren't useless. Like after you beat a boss they can learn new and stronger skills. For example after beating the Priestess Orpheus can now learn Agileo and other skills on that level

What's your thoughts on Arsene and Satanel? From hearing this video, it seems as you enjoy the more older, classical style of personas or ones with a stronger connection to mythology, hence your general distaste of persona 5 designs.

For the most part I just think Arsene and Satanael range somewhere from, let's say Alright -> Cool but not enough. I wouldn't say I dislike a majority of P5 designs, just that most reach a middle-ground bar for me at best. P5' direction for Persona inspiration is still neat, but yea overall historical/fictional literature figures are just not as interesting to me when compared to mythological deities/legends. Arsene I'm surprised I don't like as much as I feel like I should, cuz usually I love large wings on humanoid bodies. He's still cool, but probably my least favorite of the Protagonist personas. Satanael is cool but man I liked him a lot better when he was first summoned in the story than when you can use him in casual combat and he's shrunken down to fit the screen/arena. And I didn't really care for all of the metal garments he has on.

I feel like this might be an uncommon opinion after seeing other commenter's favorite Personas, but mine is definitely Kanji's Take-Mikazuchi. I actually got into Persona after playing P4AU. I mained Kanji in that game, and seeing Take-Mikazuchi absolutely obliterate its opponents is what made me decide to play Persona 4 Golden. I just had to see what it could do in the RPG

Not my favorite, but some I love and am sad they never brought back was the concept of your persona physically bonding to you. It happens in the case of Kenta in persona 1 where he was caught stress eating food and got insulted by everyone. He was given a persona earlier and summoned it via his stomach physically becoming it. It was a lizard worm thing named Akuma and it was fire based. He physically was his own persona and that is fuckin awesome.
