Agar plates are very helpful in mushroom cultivation because you can test cultures for contamination by inoculating them with one drop of a spore syringe/LC syringe before attempting to use the syringe on a grow bag. If the agar plate shows clean mycelium after incubating you are good to go but if it shows other contamination growth it is best not to use the syringe. You can use certain techniques to clean up contaminated mushroom cultures while using agar which makes them necessary. They are also great for propagating cultures and storing them. I leave my agar plates on a shelf in a cold room, they are good for 6-12+ months before the thin agar dries up. For longer storage you should use agar slants: • How to Make Mushroom C...
In the past I have used other ingredients and different brands of agar and that actually caused contamination on the plates without even inoculating them. I must have wasted 100s of agar plates before figuring out it was the ingredients that was causing the problems.
As soon as I started using this recipe in this video, every plate is perfect every time.

Good stuff...going to try that agar powder a try. I've used consumer grade ingredients for years but recently have seen some odd results. Maybe the explosion in agar related hobbies has put pressure on the supply chain. Love those PP5 plates and recently started using the new autoclavable clear plastic plates. They are a traditional Petri dish style that do fine in the PC. Being crystal clear and 90mm, they make contam cleanup and genetic work a bit easier than the frosted pp5 plates. What clear pp5 plates 🧫 do you use? I've been using the bead containers but the screw on top kind be a hassle when trying to pour quickly.

what happens to the condensation ...... i see condensation existing while you wrap with parafilm, then how does it evaporate ..... doesnt it settle down on the agar ?

I store the plates in a warm room and the moisture is absorbed back into the plates and there is no more condensation

I am wondering how you get condensation to go away.I pour mine at 120 same way you do and always am left with condensation on the first few plates on top.By the way love your channel.

Thanks for watching! 🍄 There’s condensation right after pouring but it goes away completely for me after 1-2 days. You can put a heating pad on the top of the agar plate for a few minutes to clear it up. What temperature are you storing the plates at right after making them?

In the bio lab we used to store the agar plates with the agar up so the agar would reabsorb any moisture that condensed.

This isn't to do with the video up. I'm wanting some advice can I add an casing layer after the tub has inoculated or am I to late. Kind of an emergency 🙏 I thought you would be the best on here to ask on here

You add the casing after the substrate is fully colonized, but before pinning or exposing to fruiting conditions. Once pinning starts, don't attempt to add a casing layer. It's best to pasteurize a casing layer.

I believe I’ve seen you do this with equal parts LME. Any reason for leaving it out? not necessary? I still use that recipe and works pretty well, just annoying when some plates have some condensation on the top but I’ll look in to gettin a thermometer like that.

Yeah the added LME is unnecessary because it already has enough nutrients. You can try storing the plates upside down to absorb condensation or use a heating pad on top of the plates for a few minutes.

Much love! WTF happened to 90? We have a great science based slash educational community here! did he just bail or did they kick him off? There are so many great amateur mycologists that have figured out and simplified growing to a degree I never thought possible twenty years ago! You, 90, PGT, along with many others should sell some digital courses so we can keep a digital library???? Not talking coherently but would buy a memory stick with your video library along with many others! Most people stock silly items for the zombie apocalypse, give me knowledge, seeds and spores, I will be fine!

What kind of nutrients are there in the agar?

They do not say what the nutrients are but whatever it is works best for me. Probably light malt extract or dextrose and a superior scientific grade agar powder.
