In today's video, we look at my favourite new feature in Bitwig 5; project-level modulation. We will use modulators across all the channels to create different intensity sections in our arrangements. Doing so allows us to smoothly morph between energy states. This makes for far more organic and flowing productions.

I love this in Bitwig, I was sorta doing stuff like this in Bitwig 4 by sending midi CC's to each track with the Note Receiver and having those CC's modulate things on each track, to do some stuff similar like I was doing with Scenes in my Octatrack, but this makes it so much easier. Bravo Bitwig. And of course you can have pages and pages of these modulators and switch between them on the fly. Really cool.

Год назад
Do you mean the cross-fader? I'm not actually too familiar with the Octatrack
@alexsenf
@alexsenf Год назад
@ Yea, basically an assignable global modulator. Left side is one state, right side is another. The thing that’s different about is that you have 16 states you can have and by holding the A state (left side of crossfader) and selecting one of the 16 states (using the 16 step sequencer buttons) you can quickly change what the crossfader is assigned to. You can do the same with the B state as well. Endless possibilities. Don’t get sucked into it though! Deep rabbit whole there lol
@haysmikethere
@haysmikethere Год назад
@ Yep. To add to what @alexsenf said, the states are called "scenes" and you can assign parameter values to each scene and then cross-fade between two scenes at a time. You've created something similar except each "scene" gets its own knob, which is more flexible, although I'm guessing you could end up with some fairly extreme settings if multiple knobs affect the same parameter... Of course, the min/max concept from one of your other videos could easily solve this :) Really cool stuff!

@xandywaddington7000
@xandywaddington7000 6 месяцев назад
This has other uses like when mixing, you could map a bunch of things accross a few tracks to one knob to make the comparison easier. E.G you want to turn down the treble of the vocal, but when you do that another instrument sounds muddy, so you think out that instrument in response… cue chain reaction. It would be good to sometimes map those things to a knob and compare before and after in a quick way

So, as you did this in the arranger, what if you did that in the clip launcher view and hit record whilst turning the macros? You could almost get the whole thing (automation etc) arranged in real time. Mind blown 🤯 I purchased Live years ago because the session view recording direct to the arranger blew me away. This is the next level of that paradigm. I love Bitwig ❤

When I came up with the idea of global modulation and made my 2 plugins ADSR and PerlinNoiseMod, I knew it would be a groundbraking idea, but I wouldn't have guessed that even Bitwig themselves like it so much that they implement it as a fully fledged DAW-feature and the main attractor of the latest version, which I myself ironically don't even own, because I just ran out of subscription that month. Now about your technique: I have thought about the possibiity to use global mods to make insane macros across the entire project in order to define how the sound should move into a new part gradually as well. And ofc it would be huge if we could modulate even the overall gain of the tracks for that and you sorta do that already. But I'd argue that Bitwig has to steal another feature, that can be found in most of my plugins, in order to nail this workflow. Because atm there's the undeniable problem that if you attach any type of modulation to a mixer track, then you can't really influence the base value anymore without also having to adjust the modulation, because you might still wanna use the fader simply for mixing purposes, as that's its primary function, but you also wanna keep whatever the destination of your modulation is at the same position. Atm it would move away from its value relative to the base value's changes though, so you have to adjust your modulation everytime you mix and I feel like that could get pretty annoying. Mixing should be as fast as possible, because it's a process where you shouldn't get stuck listening to a certain sound too long to prevent ear fatique, so the DAW needs to make sure to make it as simple as possible. In my plugins I solve this by letting people switch between relative and absolute modulation. Relative modulation is the modulation everyone knows, but in absolute modulation mode you can tweak the parameter value without moving the maximally modulated point. That enables you to really treat a macro control as something that moves a bunch of parameters between 2 fixed settings.
Год назад
Cool concept :) I'd love to try your plugins!
