My Favourite Five(ish) Inktense Colours and a Real Time Sketch!

Ooooh- Inktense! I LOVE these glorious watercolour pencils and cannot say enough good about them- well there is one thing and I mention it in the video.
Once again, I failed at the first hurdle however- no chance of choosing only five! So I have five plus an hon. mention and I am going to insist that it is okay.
So Let's swatch and I will show you one way that I use Inktense with a quick, sunlit sketch.

I love love inktense. I loved the sound of the hard pencils on paper. Mine are very soft at the moment. Warm wet weather in Qld . I enjoyed you enjoying my favourite medium. Thankyou for sharing!

quite beautiful. 1st time here so plz forgive if ii overstep... self-professed Derwent junkie... you may have these already... inktense: Malibu, lapis, storm dust, & pastel travel palette; tinted charcoal pencils: heather mist , bilberry, green moss, sunset pink (water soluble); drawing pencils: any of the 24; watercolor pencils (mine are from 1981 or 2 so some colors may be discontinued): blue grey, turquoise blue, delft blue, spectrum blue, copper beech, van dyke Brown, rose pink, pink madder lake, spectrum orange.

I agree sooo much about the need of some pastel colors! I get the punchline of the name Inktense, is an intense, so pigment and vibrant ink.. they are INKtense... clever... but Im confident they could come out with some very intense pastel tones, even if they are pastels! I was very glad to see their new Pink Flamingo, a SUPER needed color on the set. At first I thought their new additions were gonna be pastels and mored tones to complement the rest of their palette, but no. Is a shame. Hopefully in the near future someone from Derwent has a lightbulb moment and come up with those so much needed colors!

Excellent demonstration that a kind of sgraffito is possible with Derwent Inktense paint (pan/pencils/blocks) too. Sgraffito is the number one creative technique for oil pastellist; using electric eraser to erase back lines, tiny shapes is widely used by graphite artists; you excellently combined and adapted all these tools and techniques with Inktense. What makes all this possible is that inktense is quite reluctant to resolved back after it is dry, that is why you applied a second layer on top of the first, the yelow ocher one. Gouache is excellent for sgraffito, but there you must be very careful when adding the next layer not to resolve back the underlying layer. All Inktense fans should learn techniques from your videos.

I have found that with the Inktense Sgraffito, some experimentation with paper is needed but once the formula works, it really works! Thanks again, Deb xx

Which colur did you use on the sky you didn't say , I think I'd try this with less expensive art supplies seems a waste of pigment

Sorry, I thought that i had mentioned that- the sky colour is Dark Mink, used super light.

Interesting question! You could try a neutral and not too overpowering grey. Something like Neutral Grey or Storm Dust plus one of the mauve colours. Use the mauve very lightly over the grey. Dark Mink is a warm mauvy grey and the best way to simulate it is to try a couple of combinations. Hope that helps! Deb xx
