I love my 27mm but curious to try out the 23mm & 35mm to see if I prefer that or not. I know 27mm(40mm equiv) is even closer to an eyes fov s the 35mm(50mm equiv).
I love the 35 f2, it may be my favorite, but my 23 f2 and also my 27 2.8 v2 get so much more use from me for whatever reason. I think maybe cause we've been stuck inside so much the wider FL has been more useful.
I've just sent an X-E4 back and am keeping my X-E3. It feels nicer, and has better build quality, regardless of what some Fuji shills have said on RU-vid. Pity, as I desperately wanted it to be a step up and it's not - an example where less is less. My X-T4 is great but I don't get the same joy from it as I do with the X-E3. I've also got that 35mm lens but prefer the 23mm f2. Great to see you guys back.
Oh really?! That's interesting! I've not held an X-E4 yet, so have no comment on it. It's disappointing to think it would feel less refined than the previous model. I do also worry that the X-E4 might be the last variant of that line-up, which is a massive shame, but they're also probably the least popular, so it makes sense.
@@joeallam The X-E3 has metal control dials and buttons, but the X-E4 has quality plastic ones but you notice, and that's part of the shooting experience. And several other things, too. I was genuinely disappointed. And, you could well be right, the X-E4 may well be the last of the line, because the X-S10 appears to be - the wrong! - direction that Fuji is taking.
@@thisisbenji90 I'd be happier with IBIS and an HDMI port, but a tilting screen as on the XT-30 would be excellent. Though I think you're more likely to see the removal of the rear screen altogether, like the Leica M-D, because they need to further differentiate between the X-Pro and the X-T4/5.
Great video, Joe. It makes me really miss London and I can’t wait to be able to go back there when it’s safe to do so. I agree about the 35mm, too - it’s such a good lens. I really like the editing of those photos. I’d love to see your editing process these days. Like many, I’m struggling to find a style that I’m happy with and this video has been a great inspiration. Have a nice day.
Just got a fuji and the XC35mm f2 and tis amazing. Basically the exact same lens but plastic with no aperture ring for half the price. Fujifilm's nifty fifty basically.
I had a non fuji 35mm and often felt I needed to back up more than I'd like. Probably I am too used to a phone camera.. but anyway it didn't have af so it didn't work for me anymore when my son learned to walk. So I got 27mm f2.8 and it feels right at home! Never have I stood somewhere about to take a picture and look through the viewfinder and go ”Oh! I need to back up or move closer”.
Love those prime lenses you guys use all the time! I wanted one but then thought to myself I can’t imagine getting one and always wanting to zoom in and out and not being able to... is the image really that much better than say the 18 to 55mm at same focal length? Love having more content from you guys lately I’m pumped for more! 📸
I know how you feel! I’m always torn between my 16-55 and prime lenses. But yes, the 35 f2 will look better than the 18-55 at 35. It will be sharper and have more bokeh since it’ll be at f2. The advantage of an 18-55 is for the zoom capabilities as you mentioned, but also for video since you’ll have OIS. 35mm can feel tight indoors as well. So it’s all about how much flexibility you need and what you’ll be shooting.
My copy of the 18-55 is about as sharp at 35 as the 35mm f2. The bokeh, focusing, colors, and of course size are noticeably better on my f2 though. The WR and marked aperture ring are nice too.
Awesome video, Joe! I have to agree, the 35 f2 is essentially my favourite Fujifilm lens. When I switched over and purchased the X-T3 I got it with the 18-55 and 35 f2 and I have been amazed with how much I use and how much I love that little lens. I primarily do bird photography and more recently a lot more macro, so my 100-400 and 80mm macro probably live on my camera more often than the 35, but I do much prefer the 35 in terms of handling and versatility and compactness. Can't wait to see your post-Apple livestream!! :-)
@@joeallam Its a really nice lens. I was coming from the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 which is also amazing but a beast of a lens. I'll share a few of my favourite bird shots with you over Insta DM!
Just bought the 35mm f/2 looking forward to going into London tomorrow with it, strangely enough I'm starting off in the Marylebone area then walking into the West end. Great content keep it up.
Hello Joe! So, you need gloves from October until May? Well, all I can say is “Welcome to the Club🥳”. I am living in Cologne, Germany, which is pretty similar to London, concerning climate. Even though these days the sun is shining and it’s about 12 to 16 degrees in the afternoon, if there is a little bit of cold wind I definitely feel the need for gloves🥶🧤. So, well, it’s just good to see I’m not alone😄😉👋.
These videos are so relaxing, also I miss London lol. The F2 primes seem to be crazy good value and I love the compact form factor. Though I have the original 27mm 2.8 which is such a nice lens because it's so discrete, doesn't quite have the 'dreamy' look of the F2s though
The first lens I bought for my first 35mm film camera was a 50mm. I did not like it. It was too "telephoto" for me. I exchanged it for a slight wide 35mm lens. The 35mm became my favorite focal length for general subjects. When I bought my first Fuji X mirrorless, the first lens I bought for it was a 23mm f/1.4. I now own the 23mm f/1.4 and the 23mm f/2 for my Fuji mirrorless. I still do not own a 35mm. When I need the 35mm focal length, I use the 16-55mm Fuji zoom.
I appreciate that so many people love this lens, I just find there’s WAY too much distortion in it (before digital correction). If you’re reading this comment on a laptop, sit the laptop on your lap, turn your camera on with the 35mm f2 attached, and look at the horizontal line of the hinge between the screen to keyboard through the EVF (without taking the photo). It curves heavily.
35mmF2 is also my first and most favorite Fuji lens, the F1.4 I got later just can't compare. Bought it along my X-T100 several years ago, and I always bring it whenever I'm travelling (that is, before COVID happened). Those self COVID test seem painful, though. I don't think I could properly do it myself. The idea of sticking something to my own throat and nose horrifies me 😱
They’re such great lenses! I’ve only experienced the 1.4 a little bit, back when I was using the X-T2, and didn’t get on with it that well. It felt slow to focus and not as refined. I’ve heard they’re better with the newer camera processors now though. The COVID tests are uncomfortable, but it’s literally a matter of seconds, so you get over it pretty quickly haha
Have you not tried Sony cameras? I love Fuji but I moved away from canon to Sony to compact my gear .I prefer the the 16mm Fuji lens. I also didn’t like the xt4 in my hand. Think I make go to an xt3 for fun as kept my 16mm. The focus keeps on jumping in this vlog is that the r5?
Just discovered your channel and have subscribed. Great stuff. Just one point about the relationship between the human visual field and 35mm: 35mm does not equate to the human field of view; in fact it's the focal length that gives you an approximation of how humans perceive the spatial positioning of near and far objects. For example, ultrawide focals stretch the perceived distance between near and far objects, whereas longer focals compress it. 35mm (I believe it's closer to 50mm on full frame, maybe 45mm?) gives you a close representation of how humans perceive this separation. If we're talking about field of view then the human visual field is closer to that of a fisheye lens (160 degrees-ish).
Thanks for the detailed explanation on the phenomenon we’re experiencing with the lens, but please note that I didn’t actually claim the lens has the same field of view as the human eye. I simply summed up the above as “similar view”, regarding compression, scale and distortion etc. not how much of it is in the frame.
the hustle of carrying two camera shows how much you love each of them. I struggle to carry just one, canon M50 ha! thank you for another lovely video guys.
So interesting to hear what you describe as 'mansion style' in the UK compared to what we consider that in Canada - mansions here are usually big houses on estates that usually don't go above 2-3 floors high. Anyway - glad to have found this channel and also love this lens!
I should leave this lens on my camera again. It used to be my favorite focal length. I forced myself on the 18mm f2 for a few months just to learn to shoot with it and I can't take it off. (Partly for the close focus). It's been well over a year and I can't take the 18mm off for more than a day at a time and the 35mm feels too close. Also, I thought the question to Elly was whether she had upgraded to the X-E4...
Great content as always Joe! I also prefer my XT3 for photo and my EOSR for video. Would like to know which one of your LUTs you use for your videos? Much love from Tennessee, USA👍🏼
Top Marks for your comments on the Covid-19 test kits Joe. And as a Fuji user living here in London I found your whole video interesting and enjoyable. Thanks.
Me too! I’ve been wanting to make these style of vlogs for a long time now. Glad to have the inspiration, capacity, motivation and a whole host of other things to make them now! Thanks for your patience 🤗
Yeah I noticed that as well. There were some AF tweaks in the new R5 firmware and a new menu option/re-wording of a setting that I spotted and adjusted. I’ll have to go back and change it back, ha!
Thanks for that mate, cool, bless you Elly funny though, so cool to see you out and about, and why change, as you said Joe if your happy with the camera you use, then stick with it, most cameras these day produce great photos, its still down to the user...right!!
Enjoyed another of your videos. According to a well known & popular website I am of the Fuji unclean as I do not own any f1.4 lenses, (my 35 is a f2) shoot JPEG and not in manual.18-55 spends most of it's time on my camera , for now. If you do not hear from me again, the Fuji posse has caught up with me to determine my fate....😀
Definitely a valuable and often overlooked item for the camera bag, for sure! Im usually pretty great in a set of boots such as my timberlands or a good set of trainers with comfy soles. I recently invest in some Adidas Terrex hiking shoes and love them.
I personally haven’t noticed any differences between them optically and imagine them to be similarly built, but I must admit I haven’t specifically pixel peeped them to test the difference
Hey dude, I’m thinking of getting an XT-4 for photography because i adore the body, would you say it’s worth getting and the quality of the photos are good enough to be a main camera?
The XT4 and XT3 are high-end professional cameras so yes they are absolutely “worth” getting to produce amazing photos and videos and are totally reliable as main cameras in the right hands.
Same. And then there's rumors about Fuji making a 33mm f1.4 sometime this year. Kinda dragging my heels and seeing if that turns out to be anything first.
If you need the weather sealing and quiet autofocus, go f2. If you want more of a film look, the 1.4 has that character everyone speaks about. I’ve had both and kept the 1.4.
Depends on your needs, I guess. I have both (the 35mmF2 and F1.4). I find myself using the F2 mostly for my street photography hobby, and only change to F1.4 during the evenings as it gathers more light. I'd be happy using the F2 solely. The only reason I have the F1.4 is because I got it dirt cheap 😅
Average property price in Marylebone is around £3 million last time I checked. Back in early 00's it would have been less than 400k. London just isn't worth the effort anymore. I know plenty of wealthy folk in London who can't afford a decent family home in a nice area. A million might get you a small terrace or flat but where's the quality of life in that? Having a nice space to inhabit is fundamental to wellbeing; hence why I and many others are escaping up north. Leave the oligarchs, bankers and Bullingdon gentry to it.
Just wanted to say a big well done to you Joe for promoting the idea that everyone should get themselves tested before going out - simple but effective (and also pretty funny) 👏
Filmed that green Dodge Charger that smelled of petrol last weekend in Mayfair, when it left there was a puddle of petrol all over the floor. Spoke to the owner who told me he bought the car without actually seeing or test driving it. He took it out for a drive for the first time the weekend you shot it. That same day the car got hit just above the front right wheel arch by a BMW.
23 to 35 APSc. 35 to 50 on full-frame. but either or, should do if a likeness to human vision is the goal. Another option for the Fuji is the 27mm pancake lens and many swear by it.
Good video. The 35mm f/2 is the lens I use the most of the time too. I suffer with the cold on my hands too. Got myself a great pair of Urbex gloves from Vallerret - expensive but worth it. Wish they were available in black mind. Testing before going anywhere isn't needed though. COVID-19 has an overall IFR only a little higher than the flu at 0.15% Asymptomatic transmission isn't really a thing when the chance of that occurring in the home is 7/1000. The majority of the population are in little danger from it and immune system boosters can be taken to help people not develop it even if they pick up SAR-CoV-2.
