mikes mic always makes me feel bilingual bc like 50% of the script is memes and cultural moments that do not get explained while the other 50 is english
I cant even speak english, if I watch an American movie I have to read the subtitles but I understand every thing Mike says every joke and all the references and all the memes. It doesnt make sense, its the magic of pop culture I guess
i am so intrigued by the in-world sociocultural/political implications of “Tuna History Month” . are tuna more historically marginalized within the fish society? or is it because they’re underrepresented in society due to overfishing by humans? what IS the legacy of tuna history? they set up the questions and so i must ask them
I wanna say if you do a video on the penguin movies, don’t forget that March of the Penguins also came out around the same time as Happy Feet, and grossed over $125 million worldwide, even though it was literally just a documentary about penguins. There was legitimately something INSANE going on with penguins during the mid 00’s.
My grandmother insisted on taking me to March of the Penguins when it came out (my mom said “I think that’s a documentary, maybe she’s too young” but my grandma said “it’s a Disney movie, she’ll love it.”) Lo and behold, it *was* a documentary, a bunch of penguins died, and toddler-me left the theater in tears.
The FACT they got Ziggy Marley the ACTUAL son of Bob Marley to be in this movie singing to the reoccurring song "Three little birds (don't worry)" by the man himself what a mindblowing thing!
girl, you can’t talk about the animated fish era of the 2000’s without mentioning the bug era!! a bug’s life, antz and the ant bully? truly revolutionary
I'd like to mention that in the British release for this movie Katie Current is British instead of American/Australian. No idea why she's the only character they changed to fit the region.... other than the fact that mother KEEPS IT CURRENT!!!
As an dual citizen, the mafia storyline went right over my head as a kid. And now I’m so much older that it’s hilarious because it’s so ridiculous. Everyone knows dolphins are the mafia of the seas.
Michael Imperioli and Vincent Pastore voice acting in this too is incredibly iconic, as they were starring in The Sopranos at the same exact time. Excellence.....
Vincent Pastore (Don Lino's Octopus assistant) saying the line "If you don't want to see her sleeping with the fishes" is a quote-inception reference to his character on Sopranos correcting Michael Imperioli's character misquoting the line from The Godfather, "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes"....... and the Octopus' name...... is Luca
Actually obsessed with Katie Current having a different accent for the American, Australian AND British version. Genuinely thrown me that she wasn’t always British
Katie Current's name is also a play on Katie Couric, an American news anchor who also voiced the American version. So Katie Current's name is a triple joke including that, the "current" of water, and the "current" news cycle.
the thing I don't get is why. like, it's fine lol but why just *that* character? Katie Couric is an American, so wouldn't the bit make more sense to keep it the same regardless of country? or come up with fish puns for the Australian and British VA equivalents?
@@washedblueit was a common thing for animated movies to have small parts be voiced by regional celebs, especially in the 2000s to (id say) the early 2010s, its not as common anymore bc its a lot more effort to create different versions of an english dub
As a Frankie who grew up absolutely obsessed with this film, I am so satisfied by this. Shame I was killed by an anchor. Also, Mike, I wish you had the DVD, because there were about a billion special features and easter eggs, including this surreal full-cast dance-off sequence and if I'm not mistaken, a whale-wash mini game? The SF menu was just the fish-city scene but you could select different signs and open secret menus.
mike I want you to know that I was in a literal class in college where we learned about the mafia and I had a whole project where I analyzed shark tale. it is incredibly accurate as far as the inner workings of the mafia! like one of the most mafia accurate movies to date. comparable to the godfather!
At 3:40 , Stephen Spielberg is one of the founders of Dreamworks so that why they could use the Jaws music lol (Though that does imply that Stephen Spielberg, like Schrödinger’s cat, simultaneously exists in both as a director of a movie in the universe of Shark Tale and as one of the people who brought that very universe into being).
Dragging Nemo for not having a mom is a bit criminal to me. And yes, we need a video on the Big Penguin Agenda especially because Brittany Murphy was in Happy Feet and I love her! Rest in peace Brittany, you would've loved Mic's Mike.
bc of defunctland's disney channel jingle video every time i hear about nemo i think about the disney marketing person he interviewed that said "for a year before nemo came out, in every programing break, we added some fish facts, it was basically subliminal messaging" so maybe the pixar/dreamworks fish year wasn't such a coincidence, much to think about
"but i mean who watched The Wild?" ME 😭 i had it on dvd as a kid and watched it weekly, ngl idk how well it holds up now but rest assured there was at least one of us out there obsessed w that movie
i need everyone in this comment section to know that when i was in elementary school, my school put on a musical/play that combined a bunch of early 2000's movies into one titled "a pirate's dream" where the students from high school musical went on a vacation on the pirates of the carribean ship but crashed into madagascar where they ran into the surf's up penguins and alvin and the chipmunks, had to rescue garfield (which plot-wise was sharpay's pet) from a bunch of disney villains, and at the end, took their ship to a car wash... the fish tales car wash.
I am absolutely living for Mike trying to desperately figure out how there is so much technology in this universe meanwhile it’s a movie about talking sea animals
Yes, YES, absolutely would love a breakdown of the entire Disney vs Pixar vs Dreamworks drama of the 2000s. I was but a child in the 2000s and I watched everything and anything. How cool would it be to have you, in that fabulous way you do, give us the tea on all the shit that was going on behind the scenes 😂
the creator Lindsay Ellis has really good videos talking about this based around a book called disney wars that was an academic analysis that summarises the whole 100 year legacy, Lindsay's great her and mike have a lot of overlap in the media they talk about
I’d love a series on the Penguin agenda, but I mostly want to hear Father Michael discuss Happy Feet and how traumatizing it was for children, while still having a bombass soundtrack
So confused when I saw this video was released. I was full on convinced that you had already uploaded a shark tale video. I’m glad you addressed the Mandela effect we’re all apparently experiencing.
Let's not forget how iconic the bonus feature games were on the DVD! You could bet on the seahorses, dress up -Lenny- Sebastian the dolphin (and give him an afro if you so pleased), and my mom and I would always play the fish eat fish game together! This entire movie is iconic!
there's so many godfather references in this film LOL - at 20:35 when the octopus character says "sleeping with the fishes" it's a reference to an entire scene from that movie lmaoo
I’m so glad someone loves it😭 everytime I bring it up to people they always say they either hated it or disliked it. I just don’t get it, only like two of my friends like it😪. They just don’t understand the art
I remember being on a plane to Germany as a child and one of the only movies available was Shark Tale so I watched it like 5 times in a row. That and the That’s So Raven episode where she turns into a cow.
recently my best friend and I found a huge stash of DVDs abandoned in our neighborhood and shark tale was one of them. can not even put into words how happy I was because the DVD I had at home was ALL scratched up and wouldn’t play properly. I was obsessed with this movie growing up and I still am
The funniest about Oscar "killing" Frankie and Lenny is that it doesn't look like him defending the city (or himself) against sharks but but it looks like he's taking a hit against the family lol
I was 6 years old when this movie came out and it’s one of the first movies I can remember seeing in theaters. I spent almost the entire thing hiding under the movie theatre seats because I was absolutely terrified of sharks as a baby
Mike talking about one of the most fever dream DreamWorks movies while also wearing the iconic Casino Royale hat. Iconic behavior on full display honestly.
Mike. You’ve been brainwashed by us microphones to think that you’ve never made a video about this delicious movie. This is literally your fourth video on shark tale. Come to the light😭
I swear this movie is a masterpiece in my eyes, I had it on repeat as a child, I can memorize the movie line for line, Will smith was a fool he had me dying the entire movie, and of course the soundtrack was extremely fire. Loved the movie back then and I love it even more now.
I think I saw all of these mid-2000s 3D animal comedy movies at around 2 or 3 in the morning at various sleepovers, and all the memories of watching them feel like fever dreams now
i watched this so much as a kid but only in danish dub (as I'm Danish and I couldn't understand english back then) so seeing this is a whole new world lol
I never considered shark tale to be a “mafia movie” until I saw this title.. Also I really hope you talk about the Jack black shark being vegetarian as an allegory for being gay 🏳️🌈 18:55 YUGIOH MENTION HELL YEAH BABY
