My 1986 Ferrari 328 GTS has been under the care of Donny in the Desert for a few weeks, with the instructions to fix literally anything he finds wrong with the car. After our first visit, we thought we had a good list going, but even though the engine is now running again, the list of things to fix has gotten a LOT longer, including some maintenance items that were over 30 years old! Let's see what other gremlins lurk inside a 35-year old italian engine!

Re Gear Oil. I have a 328. I use a mix of 1 qt of Redline 75W90 & then fill it with 75W90 NS (around 3.5qts). Been doing that for 15 years + & its a pretty widely used answer. I've also tried Redline MTL which works well & is recommended for boxes with tough 2nd gears but I don't have that & it felt a bit light in my car.

I hope the Royal Purple gear oil serves you guys right. Redline is good, but there is a specific combination of Redline MTL and Redline MT-90 that is known as the Redline cocktail that people use in various transmissions as it smooths up the shifts, provides great protection against gear shock, and provides much smoother engagements at cooler temperatures. A lot of DSM/Evo guys run this on the five speed GSR transmissions as it is much better than the stock fluid provided by Mitsubishi. If Royal Purple doesn't work out well on that Ferrari gearbox go back to Redline but look up the specific weights needed for the 328 and try the cocktail approach. It certainly won't hurt the transmission and might be exactly what you are looking for. When I had my supercharged Elise, there was always a tough engagement in colder temperatures from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and sometimes a bit of grinding if you didn't rev match perfectly or try to double clutch. Now if the car sat and warmed up for 20-30 minutes and was driven gingerly for another 15-20 minutes until the transmission and its fluid came up to temp then there were no issues. You could shift like an absolute imbecile/maniac and it took it no problem but you had to spend plenty of time warming everything up. I drained the fluid and ran the Redline cocktail in it and I never had an issue with any of gear changes even in colder temperatures. Like you said, you had tons of anecdotal submissions from people who didn't own Ferrari's and this is another one, but I don't know anyone who went away from running the Redline cocktail once they gave it a try and felt how much better the syncros were engaging and the lack of grinding or shock if any mistakes were made at any temperatures. Best of luck and its nice to see the car in full running order. Donny is a one of a kind guy who really pays attention to the details and doesn't skimp on anything. It shows that these are more than just cars to him, he understands they are works of art and engineering that require the same attention to detail and dedication when it comes to maintaining these cars. That same amount of effort must match the amount of pride and effort the guys over at Maranello poured into this thing to design it and get it on the road. Donny is certainly an inspiration to me because it reminds me of how passionate I used to be when it came to vehicles and maintaining them which has slipped over the years due to work, life, etc. taking priority over my life for automobiles. Hopefully he has an apprentice, family member, or coworker who will be able to carry on his legacy when he finally decides to step away from rebuilding everyone elses cars so he can enjoy his own.

My son has an E90 6MT. Redline D4 ATF seems to be a popular choice among the community. But we went with Amsoil synchromesh manual transmission fluid. Since we live in a warm climate, it can handle more viscosity without having to worry about how it performs in really cold weather. Get a bit better protection without sacrificing performance/smoothness. Been very happy with it.

Not sure if this is gonna be worth looking at on this, but ask him to check the distributor and the distributor cap on the next service as a precautionary. as Harry Metcalif of Evo took his vintage testarossa, which probably has the same parts on it, all over europe and even had it put on the grand tour, only to find after having to do a major service, found that the thing was basically on half power, and had been that whole time thanks to the rotor on the distributor like rusting up and damn near falling off. like it needed a new Rotor and the points to be cleaned up that whole time it had been on the GT, and if it has parts that old on it, you could be in for a load more power if it simply hasnt had that done on it.

@Patrick94GSR
@Patrick94GSR 3 года назад
@@Kidsinamerica but that’s with any car. Any car needs a workshop manual to know the torque specs among many other things. A Ferrari engine is still an internal combustion engine. @Kidsinamerica

@@Patrick94GSR Ferraris being Italian cars, those manuals are printed with METRIC units and contain rough translations to English that can be very confusing to the novice. They also require some specialized mechanical tools to repair properly. Since 1980, Ferraris utilize Bosch electro-mechanical systems for fuel injection. You'd be amazed at the number of 'mechanics' who utterly have no CLUE how to diagnose and repair a Bosch Jetronic FI system from 30 years ago...or operate a four-gas analyzer to tune an engine, or operate a degree-wheel on the crank to set a belt-drive system for proper timing. I was with this guy until he suggested drinking water in the coolant system... No my guy that’s a one way ticket to limescale in there. Distilled water only in your coolant mix, especially on engines with aluminium heads or blocks. The gearbox having a sump that comes off and lets you inspect the gears like that is such a nice feature.
@QuidproMoto
@QuidproMoto 3 года назад
Well.... not really. Distilled water or water with no minerals in it will leach the minerals out of your cooling system. What you want is a little bit of minerals like what is in bottled drinking water. That way the water is not trying to dissolve your aluminum block. Or copper head gasket. Or the magnesium cover. Get the already mixed coolant and your all set.

Bosch CIS; Aye yeee...... That system, also known as K-Jetronic, works wonderfully. Right up until the first time you get any sort of dirt or water into the system, and then it turns into a raging monster and is a complete nightmare to deal with. I know it wouldn't be "correct" and as such may indeed lower the value of the car, but installing a Megasquirt or maybe a Holley Sniper system would be a major improvement. I'm a true and true Porsche man, but that 308/328 body style is one of the best looking cars ever built. Great video!

From what I understand a lot of the newer gear lubricants have a lower viscosity "feel" but the performance is the same, if not better, because of newly engineered synthetic polymers. The older "thicker" type of oil keeps the grime suspended in the matrix that just gets run over the surfaces again and again, whereas the newer fluids are easier to filter and they dissipate heat more efficiently.

I use royal purple in the gearbox of my E39 M5 and it shifts so great. Makes a world of difference, especially once temps raise a bit. You're lucky to have a guy that'll experiment like that to find what actually works best.

There are many gear boxes that run ATF,… high viscosity isn’t always what transmissions like. Differentials yes. Thinner fluid can make shifts smoother and warm up quickly. If you’re jamming gears hard ya keep it heavy.

Royal Purple is the shit. I've been running it in all my manual gearboxes for over 5 years (4 different cars) and it improved every one of them - better shift action (especially when cold) and my current trans runs at least 20F cooler (during similar 3 hour summer spirited drives in 90-ish F temp).

I bought a 308 GT4 on BaT with paper work showing a major service with upwards of 25k of work. Turned out the transaxle had major issues. I sent it on its way with the local expert's analysis of the issues he uncovered. The new owner had a clearer picture of what he was getting into that I had. Live and learn/Die and forget it.

It's hilarious that people believe that a timing belt on a Ferrari will explode after 5 years but a timing belt on a honda will last 200,000 miles. I have over 80,000 miles and 14 years on my 360 timing belt and it's still just fine.

Wish I could drop my 308 off at Donnie’s. Long transport from Florida tho. Have done most of the same things myself over the years. Nice to just leave for a few weeks, write a check and drive it in confidence though. Nice to see the 3X8 getting mainstream video exposure. Been getting info almost exclusively on Fchat for many years now. The more info the merrier. Enjoy the ride Matt.

14:35 who knows if he was comparing 0w20 to 10w40. Oils of the same weight should have the same viscosity
@herrerambp
@herrerambp 3 года назад
yeah but he's not talking about engine oil, he's referring to gear oil which the Royal Purple is-- which is like 75w80 or something. So he probably means the comparable gear oils from other brands were super thin which gives a clunkier feel.
@krusher74
@krusher74 3 года назад
yeah, there is much confusion over oil viscosities, a multi-grade will often be a lot thinner at room temp over a straight grade. So it lubes better on startup etc. You can run old straight weight, but you're going to have to wait till that gear oil gets warmed up for smooth shifts because it no good when thick and cold. I have 75/90 synth in my old car over the stock 90w it would have back in 1974, shift well straight out of a cold garage now.
