My first cross-border flight. Was ATC reprimanding me?!

Back in November, I made my first cross-border flight to the US, when I flew myself down to Virginia for some work meetings. After a ton of planning and paperwork, the flight actually went much more easily than I expected, and it was a really pretty route down over the Appalachian Mountains into the airport at Winchester. The flight back was bumpy but nice, but I did get chastised by ATC - or so I thought. In retrospect, I don't think they were telling me to shut up - I think someone must have been making some stupid noises (meowing?) on the channel, and ATC was telling them to shut it, but at the time, I was afraid my radio was transmitting when it shouldn't and everyone was hearing me talk to myself.
The cross-border process is kind of involved, and there are a bunch of links here that may be helpful for anyone else planning a similar trip in either direction.
US ATC sticker from DTOPS: dtops.cbp.dhs....
CanPASS approval to expedite the crossing into Canada: www.cbsa-asfc....
eAPIS: eapis.cbp.dhs....
ADAPT ADS-B deviation for fellow Canadians looking for a temporary exemption to fly into class B/C airspace: www.faa.gov/ne...

Haha. That look on your face was priceless(you've never been told to shut up). Someone once had a stuck mic, and the atc kept thinking it was me and kept calling me to fix it. of course, he couldn't hear my response. it was so weird.

LOL that’s funny. I wonder what ATC can do to try to get the pilot’s attention. I guess calling on guard is about it.

I don’t know if you monitor 121.5 on your second radio. But if you do, you will hear these “cat” fights a lot. There are a lot of TFR activity in my area (between Philly and Baltimore) and I monitor 121.5 just in case I violate something I shouldn’t. I will hear a lot of this kind of chatter on this freq.

Why not get IFR ticket?

I’ve gotten it since then. That was my first ever trip across the border, less than a year after I got my PPL.

Fly VFR over the top, with AP, minimum 1000’ ceilings, no icing in the clouds, minimum 1 hr fuel remaining on landing, VFR on each end and redundant power/instruments/navigation. IFR is great if you fly a lot, can stay proficient at it and can’t wait out the weather.

FLASHPASS is an app that is getting really good reviews from active pilots, Streamlines the eApis process 👍

Thanks. Yeah, I checked that out but don’t remember why I didn’t go with it. I’ll look into it again before my next trip south.

Do you need to get a transponder code to cross the border so they know who you are?
@WingsOverTO
@WingsOverTO 4 месяца назад
Yes, you need to be on either VFR flight following or on an IFR flight when you’re crossing the border. Check out my video from a couple of months ago if you’re curious - I laid out the steps for planning and making a cross border flight. Cheers.

This is great how can I contact you for your help? How come you didn’t call buffalo appch? Why did you chose to land in buffalo instead of Niagara for the clearance? I am going to KBAF in a few weeks and can’t seem to Get enough information for Preparing for my flight

Nicely done. Just got my sticker and radio license to prep for a US to CAN flight later this year. Looking forward to it. Side note, not only the meows, but "let's go brandon" calls on the radio have gotten ridiculous here. Likely, you were hearing a reaction to that somewhere.

Very cool, let me know if you come to the Toronto area. I’ve heard about the meowing but hadn’t heard about the Lets Go Brandon ones. People can be…special.

Dam in 1975 (on our Honeying moon) left Ottawa CN for Messenia NY. Put Avvise Customs on the VFR Flight Plan. Well Long story short the GREAT Tower Operator at Messenia told me to park Parrell to the fence and don't get out, Don't even open the Door or the Window. well the Gaurds said i should have called them so they made me take every thing out of the plane then put it back. Then Buy a $25 sticker. F'em.

The sticker hasn't gone up much in price if it was $25 in 1975; I paid $30, I think.

Really enjoying the videos. I fly a C182 out of Brampton and have been looking forward to travelling to the US when things get less crazy. I have been a little intimidated by the customs aspect of the cross border flight. I understand that you need to give the US Customs office a 15 min window for arrival time. Is this accurate?
@WingsOverTO
@WingsOverTO 2 года назад
Thanks Tim. I thought I’d read that somewhere during the planning too. But they seemed pretty chill. I think the new rule is you call them at least 2 hours before you arrive. When I was doing my preflight I called them, and then when the mist kept me on the ground for an hour I called them again to let them know I’d be delayed, and their response was something like “thanks for the heads up”.

Nice video travelogue and great to see CYOO again. I took my PPL in 1986-87 through Skycraft and had lots of circuits on #33 with practice over Lake Simcoe and X-country runs to Muskoka, Barrie, Peterborough, Lindsey (used to have a great home-made pie at the restaurant) and Kingston. Now I live 5 minutes from CYYJ, watch lots of air traffic but don't fly as it would be too expensive to maintain currency (due to mountains and coastal weather a minimum 75 hours per year are recommended).

Thanks! Always great to hear from an Oshawa flyer, even a former one. I've heard about the butter tarts at Lindsay but never tried one, I really need to do that. :) I'd love to fly out to/around the west coast; I have no mountain flying experience. How do you find it out there?
@GlensHangar

C-FMVU is almost done and I'll be moving to our hangar in Oshawa in the next few weeks - the border crossing is something that so many pilots (and my CFIs back in the day) make seem like big task with so many rules... yet you made it look so simple. Maybe in the Spring I'll get you in the plane and we'll hop over the border just for the experience?
@WingsOverTO
@WingsOverTO 2 года назад
Thanks Glen, I’d love to do that. I’ve been following your videos on rebuilding FMVU, can’t wait to see it. Are you going to be in one of the T hangars?

@@WingsOverTO I do have one of the T hangars in building 2. I've had it for a while, when my name came up on the waiting list I grabbed it even though I didn't need it yet. Should be based in Oshawa by late Feb.

Thanks for that. Really enjoyed it and lots of info for crossing the border (which I haven't done yet). I, too, record videos in my plane and am fully aware of how much time it takes to edit them. You did a really good job with the split screen. The radio thingy was weird. I don't think it was meant for you, though. All the best to you.

Excellent video! Congrats on your first border crossing (during Covid , no less). One question: did you land and clear Customs in Buffalo because Winchester doesn't have US Customs? I usually try and avoid a stop, as long as it doesn't leave me with a leg of more than 3.5 hours. Sometimes I'll choose an airport a bit further from my destination just because it has Customs and I can avoid a stop. On the other hand, Sometimes a stop is well worth it if they have both cheap fuel and Customs and it breaks up a long flight. Richmond, VA (KFCI) has worked well for me a few times.
@WingsOverTO
@WingsOverTO 2 года назад
Unfortunately Winchester doesn’t have customs, so I would have had to stop somewhere. Initially I was thinking I’d do the Niagara airport to avoid needing the ADSB deviation, but Niagara doesn’t have a permanent office - you call in advance and the officer drives out from the Rainbow bridge I believe. So I decided to go with Buffalo. I agree that if I could avoid it, I’d rather not make that extra stop.

KOKV was my first stop for the night after picking up my newly purchased airplane in Westerly RI I liked the friendliness of the folks at the FBO very nice airport to fly-in. The Tecnam that you filmed comes straight from the factory in NAPOLI Italy, I manage their shipping to the USA...regarding the ATC call for sure was not directed to you just judging from their pissed off tone...they for sure would not talk that way simply when hearing someone talking...they must have been pretty mad. You can find the ATC freq on LIVE ATC online and download the recording and perhaps you can hear the real culprit making cat noise...post the recording if you find it!

I think if the radio thing was legitimately meant for you there would've been an interference anyways if you were transmitting. Pretty funny though!

Yeah totally agreed. In the moment, though, and as a relatively new pilot flying in the US for the first time, it really freaked me out! 😀
