A typical day in LA be like, you go the beach on a beautiful sunny day. In NYC however, you get robbed on the block, slip on frozen subway stairs and get pushed on the track by some maniac, also you get to taste the aroma of the homeless. And your rent does the final fucking on you get home
Shelby, I would be worried about roaches/rodents too. First, do not leave any food out or in the cabinets. Put it all in the fridge. And those cardboard boxes you brought in -- throw them out immediately. They love boxes. Finally, I would not leave any trash in the apartment overnight, not even in a trash can. Take it to the trash room every day.
That unfinished wall is on purpose. It’s an NYC thing - if the wall doesn’t go all the way to the ceiling it’s considered temporary and doesn’t need to be re-evaluated for meeting fire code. Haven’t seen one of those in a while and god do I not miss them haha
From a girl who's lived right next to a river her whole life which means constantly dealing with little critters...Definitely buy Mouse Repellent Spray and spray around every few weeks. Keep your windows and doors closed always and obviously try not to keep food/trash around. They gravitate torwards plastic bags so don't keep anything important in them, use bins if you store anything. Have fun in New York!
@@Jesushabitz better a snap trap if you must. The sticky traps are a painful way to go and usually end up trapping other unfortunate critters that don’t belong. I’ve seen birds have to be soaked off with wd40. So awful.
@@Desert_Dreamin024 snap traps work when its a clean kill, but the one time I caught one by a leg. it was still alive when I noticed. I couldn't help but to feel empathetic for the poor little thing trying it's hardest to escape. I just put outside in the trash and let it freeze to death. it didn't take long. it was -30.
Sometimes hotels will do long term rental specials. Back in the day holiday Inn would do a 1 month rate, if you don't like the air bnb I would totally suggest researching that option 😊
Especially with covid! Hotels in my area have always rented out rooms for cheap to students because everything dies down in the winter here. Since covid there’s even more
Awesomeness!! The Airbnb is not the fanciest but it’s only up from here!! NYC is not all the way back yet but it’s nice cause less crowded. You can actually get tickets for anything…no scalpers! LOL. This my fav time of year in NYC cause it’s not super hot. 🥵
Your fortitude to take chances, to try out new things, to travel, is so commendable, especially during these trying times. When younger, my wife and I traveled a lot. However, there is no way could we envision experiencing these things, the way you approach them.
I had mice and roaches in my first NYC apartment. Tips I followed religiously that helped. 1) But some wool mesh and stick it in any holes that are the size of your pinkey or bigger. Mice’s skeletons can collapse making them able to fit in holes as small as a dime 2) Take the trash out nightly 3) Don’t leave dishes in the sink and make sure the sink stays dry 4) Id figure out how to contact the landlord but since you’re in an AIRbnb it may be difficult Welcome to the city and enjoy it! The vibe of the city is different pre-pandemic but there’s still tons going on.
Thank you for this! Just moved to New York a month ago and I’m TERRIFIED of what I would do in a mouse/roach situation😭😭😭 I found a roach in my shower a couple weeks ago so I sprayed the heck out of it with bug spray and sprayed all the base boards with the spray and then my mom bought roach traps for me. But definitely going to look into the wool mesh. The vents have large holes at the bottom and I’m not sure what could run through them 😬😣
@@adawkins5678 roaches are attracted to water so they may come back. See what your building does for an exterminator (usually it’s some guy that comes on a random Saturday per month and yells in the halls (EXTERMINATOR) or it’s a sign up sheet) and they’ll spray once a month. Best of luck and welcome to the city!
Great video Shelby and glad that you have a friend like Annemarie staying with you and helping you with filming and editing videos and such. Looking forward to more adventures and also the interesting life of pet RU-vidrs too!
You should do a video about Korean Vlogers… those that never show their faces, but only their lifestyles , they dońt even talk, it´s all subtitled . LOVE THEM haha look for Haruday for reference.
Would love to hear your thoughts behind how you decided on renting your Airbnb, especially with you having an Airbnb. Thanks! Enjoy New York. It’s the best
enjoy the city!!! as an NYU grad i can say it was the best 4 years of my life pretty much all because of the fact that it was in the greatest city in the world
Couldn't be more excited that you are in New York!! You'll fall in love with it. They refer to those as "flex rooms" on StreetEasy 😂. I would definitely just get a set of mouse traps and put them in your closet, in the kitchen, etc!! Welcome to the best city on earth 💕 P.S. spend a ton of time in Brooklyn
Enjoy! New York is so much older than LA- you’ll get a feel for the differences east coast to west coast 😻 So curious why you chose the Airbnb you did knowing the bad reviews? Xx
This is so fun! I hope you get a metro pass since you’ll be there for a month rather than pay every time you ride ;) Be sure sure to always clean and put away dishes every night and throw out trash to avoid pests! Don’t leave clothes and stuff laying around. I’d avoid eating in your rooms.
Enjoy New York!!! As a heads up - New Yorkers are really only COLD when it comes to like smiling to strangers on the street or small talk. It’s like we are rough on the outside but when you get to know us, we treat you like family forever!
The thing about Shelby is that she fits right in. You’d think she’d been living in NYC all her life. She’s calm. So calm I don’t even notice I’ve been watching a couple of ads for three minutes or more before she’s on the screen again.
Many times roaches come out of the drains (even if you just used it, sink, shower, whatever), so make sure you have a stopper with fine holes. Don't leave drains open.
Glad to see you Shelby here in New York . Yes New York is a very polarizing city you ether love it or hate it and at the beginning it can be overwhelming or intimidating .But do not let that discourage you , once you get used to it you will like it .
I did the same thing and moved to nyc for six months this summer. It can be an adjustment at the beginning, but I fell in love with the city. Now I am hoping to go back for good! I hope you enjoy your stay! ☺️
I lived there for a year and it was a Huge culture shock when I moved from CA to NYC. Not having a car to carry your stuff and groceries was the hardest! It is hard to find a stylish backpack this is also very lightweight. I loved it after 3 months though and would love to do it again but the rent is so crazy.
I double dog dare you to total up ALL your expenses for the month in NYC, every coffee, every lunch, every cover fee etc, and make a video about it at the end!!!
New York is really amazing! I like going to cities using my Nomad Lane Bento bag coz it gives me stress-free travel. You would like it for sure. Your Macbook can fit inside along with your other gadgets like camera, phone and other documents for easy access. I just love it!
I'd love to see a review of your NYC apartment in terms of cost, neighborhood, etc (obviously once you leave for safety reasons lol), or even compared to others in the city for the same budget
Some advice from a long time east coaster, buy a winter coat now, the worst part of the east coast is that one day it will be a nice 60-70 degrees and overnight it will become 20-30. Winter hits fast lol
First off I'll be living for these vlogs, can't wait for more NYC videos! Also can't wait for the pet video, you should try and track down one of the pets from the Barkchelor from the try guys video to add to your video!
Also you don't need a metro card anymore you can use your phone. Omny is really good and modern. It's the same price. Unless you want use it for the nostalgia
I believe they were filming for Law & Order in the city, so maybe that's the crew that you saw out on the streets! You are also too kind, I would withhold judgement on the how nice New Yorkers actually are until you've been shoulder checked 7 times walking down the sidewalk because nobody wants to yield the right of way.
its really roomy and pretty decent , it looks like a 1960 - 1964 apartment by seeing the old tile and the style of everything , and your bathroom in the unit looks like they updated it , it was probably a old subway style tile if it was nicer building back then 2 tone tile with tile trim , it looks like solid building with the hardwood floors are nice , if it had a great view would change the whole vibe , old apt's all mostly have a boxy layout , but ya so much to do there so thats great !!
That's definitely only a one-bedroom apt! You used to be able to build those temporary/flex walls all the way to the ceiling (the tenant usually pays for the wall - building just needs to approve), but there are fire codes and stuff and now they have to have an opening of 12 inches at the top - not super fun when the light's on in the main room but great way to save cash - enjoy your time in NYC!
For the pests: get peppermint essential oil (you can get it at whole foods) and put a few drops on cotton balls and place them around your apartment, especially in the kitchen. For food you keep stored, buy hard sided bins with lids to store it in. Not the most convenient since you're only there temporarily but hopefully with help with peace of mind! I had mice in my house last winter but luckily we found the source and got rid of them.
girl, if the mice and rodents are too bad youre going to want to change apartments ASAP. keep in mind that no matter how clean you keep your house, youre in NYC and you cant help how UNCLEAN your neighbors are. love NYC but youre in one of the dirtiest cities in the USA and the building is definitely older. Like others said, no food out, always keep the house clean. glass tupperware for sure. get glue traps and if you see them you have to take apart the heaters, closets, cabinets in the apartment and see where the hole is. get steel wool and also silicone from home depot / walmart and put it in the holes (although the air bnb host should be doing all this for you if you do indeed run into an issue) if you smell urine, keep in mind that is the mice. mice PEE when they walk! they can suck in their stomachs and get into any hole and in NYC with the pipes, if you can hear them in the walls, they're there. also watch out for droppings that looks like pebbles. rice is good indication cause they will eat your food and poop it out as black or green. I don't live in NYC but I live in another city and this is coming from someone who is germaphobe clean freak and thank God I had the RIGHT maintenance guy get rid of them. thank God, i havent seen them since in about 3 years. keep us updated!
You're taking to it like you've been there for years ! Keep up your effervescent attitude and vibe! I so enjoy rejoicing in your new endeavors that result in positive change.
I wish you all the best on this new adventure! I love NYC and used to go a few times a year before Covid. Have you checked out LIC in Queens? Great neighbourhood and the views of Manhattan are insane! I like staying at the Paper Factory there which has since become a collective. Seems like a nice concept. And please go have a drink at Maison Première in Brooklyn 🙌
Pests: eucalyptus and peppermint oils in the corners/doors/everywhere. Raid kills cock roaches very quickly. Saw a mouse in my apt late last night and haven’t slept since, Newly renovated too.
New York seems much more of a hassle than it is worth. You should live in all fifty states for one month. The would-be fun and very educational for people looking to move to different states.
Try not to have any cardboard boxes, I hear they like to be near them, use plastic bins instead to store things. In the sink-kitchen and bathroom, try not to leave any standing water, wipe down clean and put a drop or two of dishsoap down the drain.
echoing the comments re: pest tips. make sure to put your food away and do your dishes, and keep food items in a plastic bin or the fridge if you are really worried! the place may be older but it is pretty clean (not cluttered with a bunch of stuff they can hide behind) and you are only there for a few weeks so you won't be building up a mess- I think you should be fine! (source: been living in a 100 year old building in boston for years!). You are going to have so much fun in NYC!
Rats/mice tip, if it helps -- Get some peppermint oil and put it on cotton balls along the floor at potential entry points - they hate it! (works for wasps too) PS congratulations on the move! Awesome videos thanks
Omg I remember looking out from the Vessel and u can actually see that the pool says “Equinox” in tiles on the bottom when u look down on it from above!! 🤩
As I mention in many other videos, Manhattan & Brooklyn is not all of New York. I live in Queens, Astoria and have a really nice large 1 bedroom apartment and it's easy to get to Manhattan via train or car.
Greetings from NYC! I was born and raised in NY and still reside and work here. I see you are around the Hudson yard area which is super close to Madison square. I wanted to recommend you go to Colome Nails in 31st street and 7th Ave! They do an amazing job! Also I recommend you buy a monthly metro! It will cost you so much less to get around in the train! Welcome to NYC living!
Lol the flex wall. Why did you pick Hudson yards/fidi area to stay in? There’s so many Airbnbs in different areas that would be a better pick. Honestly if it’s not too late I would find another place if you wanted to get a better New York experience. Also buy a can of raid and a door guard if there’s an opening under the front door. They’ll come up from the drains or vents too it’s just ✨a lil spice✨ of living there
Hope you enjoy your time. I’ve never been to NYC other than the airports when traveling internationally. It’s only ever appealed to me for the historic aspect of it and the food, it does look like it’s fairly open now so I might take a trip in the near future.
I'm excited for these videos. I myself will be putting my stuff in storage for 2 months in Austin TX and will be going to Florida for 2 months in Jan/Feb:)
Welcome to NYC. The people here are tough and straightforward. We're more genuine than people in most cities. We're overall nice people here. It will take time to adjust but soon you'll be the same way :-)
We've never had rodents but roaches yes. Buy a can of raid and there are these gel traps on Amazon that we have put by the front door. and in the bathroom cause they can come up the pipes and we rarely see them now
"basically, I'm interviewing a(n) instagram-famous raccoon.... owner for the video about pet youtubers, like, Pet Tubers" is hands down, the most Gen Z sentence I've ever heard. I'm 30.
Welcome to New York, Shelby 😀 I live in Queens. I hope you’re having a great time so far! Visitors from other states or countries shouldn’t take that belief literally that people in NYC are not friendly. There’s a lot of great & kind people who live here😃 but at the same be caution who you talk to & make friends with. I didn’t watch you for awhile so it’s good seeing your videos👍🏻 I wish I could meet you being you’re here in New York. Maybe some day. Keep up the videos😇
