I'm back!!! This video is a lot different than my usual tutorial style but its really reflective of where I was this summer. It was hard! and thats ok! I spent a lot of it feeling pretty crummy and scrolling social media and then feeling even worse--definitely not a good use of my time. So today I'm sharing my very first feathers and some thoughts on social media. The pictures we see are not the entire story and it is hard but important to remember that from time to time.
I hope you enjoy a lovable laugh at my first feathers with me!

And we’ll be here when you’re back!! I’ve learned so much from you! I was so excited when I saw that you had posted a video, not realizing that it would be such an important one. Take care of yourself along with your family. I’ve always thought that you are amazing - even more so now. I, and all of your fans will look forward to and appreciate your videos at whatever rate works for you. Your message comes at a perfect time for me.

Thank you Megan. Our lives have so many wins, like when our kids learn to do something, they smile or a meal is served and enjoyed, even if it is just a sandwich. These are not instagram-worthy moments but are more lasting. Your quilts and RU-vid channel are amazing and worth the wait. You’re way more than enough, just as you are.

Your summers are a double time job with 2 kids who have special needs! As someone in special education for 38 years, I’d always begetting anxious right about now thinking about the energy that back to school would take. Even though I always loved my students! Hang in there, a little downtime is right around the corner. Enjoy the fall and give yourself grace.

A few years ago, I had only ever hand quilted and I had a quilt that had been in my quilt rack for a year or more that I was struggling to make myself work on. In desperation I turned to the internet to see if I might be able to machine quilt it and I found one of your RU-vid videos. You were the start of my obsession! Thank you for sharing your struggles with us and know that you are loved and supported by all of us faithful followers. Hugs to you!

Wow! First, Thank you so much for sharing this. It dropped into my suggested videos just when I needed it. I am a secret quilter. I am a fifty-something year old man who started quilting when my Mom got sick with cancer. I wanted her to have something to keep her warm. I have made a handful of quilts and other items that have all been gifted. But never anything that I wasn’t afraid to share. I always felt my work was sub-par. My granny used to tell us that “Comparison is the thief of Joy”. I thought of that every time I didn’t post something I had made out of fear that I didn’t know what I was doing. I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you had the courage to speak your truth. I don’t feel quite as alone in this world of perfect quilters. Thank you very much for sharing! 😊

@@TinyOrchardQuilts I love your honesty. I lost most of my sight in 2016 becoming blind by the medical definition. At the time I could see text on my phone/ tablet screens clearly 4 inches from my nose, now text is smudged. In bright light as well as my world being blurry it becomes “foggy”. In low light I have huge blind spots that make me nearly totally blind. I practiced sewing pieces I cut with AccuQuilt dies (since I can no longer see the lines well enough to cut accurately or safely with rotary cutter and rulers, I have to be careful with the occasional acrylic template I use that no measurements are needed (face masks, hexagons for EPP). Once I found a way to get my seam allowance consistently accurate by making a fixed seam guide it was finally time to start piecing tops. (I started with a quilt I cut out with the AccuQuilt tumbler die before my sight loss diagnosis). I ended up with various tops finished or partly made. No completed projects. In January 2020 I decided to make a complete project using my 6 inch Qube to make a quarter of the quilt designed for the 12 inch Qube called Snow Crystals on the AccuQuilt website. It pushed me out of my comfort zone because the pieces were tiny in comparison to what I’d been sewing (mostly pieces from the 12 inch Qube sets). I hadn’t got feeling my seams nest properly yet nor sewing triangles so I didn’t lose their points, or didn’t have their points “floating” where I over compensated. Then pushed myself to sandwich and quilt the resulting door quilt. I tried machine stitching in the ditch to make my snow crystal (a constant fabric- blue low volume print on white) stand out from the scrappy background (multiple prints with a blue background in various values- the prints were either in another shade of blue, or in white). Let’s just say I wove all around the ditch like a blind driver- oops. So I hand quilted the blue background (not perfect but less disastrous) and hung it up on my door to greet visitors feeling I’d messed up. My neighbour really admired it and yes I pointed out the errors, she said how she couldn’t sew at all so she really admired me for being able, and asked me to make her an identical one. I gave her the original when I made a spring door quilt using the large equilateral triangle die. Just before the UK went into covid lockdown.

I try to make all my comparisons to myself. I've only been quilting since beginning of Pandemic. I was watching videos and teaching myself. My personal requirement for each of the 20 ish quilts I've made is that I have to learn a new skill on each. Even so each one has been better than the one before. As long as I'm improving, enjoying the process and learning I will be proud. Of course I'd always like to be as good as those I learn from online but truthfully I am always a work in progress. Thanks for the prospective this post offers. It's a good reminder to all.

You are so right, it is a comparison trap. I see things I made 5 years ago, and think, "Wow, what was I trying to do?" But at the time, I was struggling, and thought I had mastered it. We grow and learn how to do things easier, faster if we want, but still life is a journey. And a journey is sometimes extremely SLOW, and sometimes extremely FAST, and sometimes, hallelujah, even keel. Keep in mind we are still here, excited for your new inspiration.

I was worried, I am glad you are back! I know about depression and its hard. I am not on social media, I hate it and do not want to spoil my time with it, I loved the quilt in the tree! See you soon!🙋🏼‍♀️🌷🇱🇺

I’m proud of your feathers. I won’t even try them. All I do is stippling. So be proud 😀

With depression some days I find myself having to remind myself that even small efforts give me experience to build on. My other daily challenge is to remember that it may be mentally difficult to go into my quilt room and continue to work on a project but afterwards I feel so much better for the effort, even if I messed something up. Every project I end I try to look for growth, improvement or something significant I learned from the project. The last area allows my mistakes to be accomplishments as long as I think about what I learned and what I can do differently next time, a few ending of a project isn’t necessarily a completed project.

You touched my heart with this talk. It was just what I needed to hear. Thank you so much for making me believe it's OK not to be perfect in someone else's eyes.

Such an inspirational message. I’m guilty of comparisons with the perfect Instagram picture or story. Great reminder to be proud of where I am. I have a FMQ sample that looks so bad that I laugh every time I look at it. Yet the next one was so beautiful that I couldn’t believe I did it. Thanks again.

What a well-timed video!!! I missed you. And wondered about the pressure to create content and what a relief a break must feel like. My special needs child has just turned 25. And last year I finally returned to quilting. Last one I did was her baby quilt.... hand quilted. So today I am practicing FMQ because I have to figure out how to do this because there is no quilt by cheque book in my bank account. So I was hearing some rather discouraging inner voices at my first out-put which looks nothing like your lovely feathers. But thank you for showing where you started. Because I would be happy to end up one third as good as you:) I admire you finding creativity within the home and producing content when your kids are small. I ended up working and home schooling as our autism program was a joke. Our home is tiny as well and quilting takes space. I found summer was a time for exhaling and being in the sun and outside as much as possible for my kids. It was healing for all of us. You might want to reframe the SAD into a time for inhaling and a time for exhaling... and we all have a different rhythm for breathing. And if you are living with special needs, it is much better to work with their rhythms as much as possible, without neglecting your own. All the best and thanks so much for your content, it is always so authentic. I'm glad you don't pretend to be anyone else other than who you are.

Sooooo glad to see you again! I think anyone who saw your “last video” was aware something was amiss with you. You are strong and beautiful….there is only one of you and you are perfect the way you are. I think you might be surprised at how many of us share your struggles with summer (I do too). Being a mom and having a few stolen moments to zone out in your creative side is hard to do. Know there are people out there that have been there, are there now, and some will experience in time. Social media is good and bad all in one breath. I personally look for information delivered clearly and encouragingly. I stumbled across you originally and instantly felt a connection to you. Keep up the great work….we’ll be here waiting for you when you are able.

Thanks for sharing with us. We forget that snapshot in time. I loved that you shared the first piece with feathers you did. I am too critical of myself but if it is my best then it is good enough. Have a great day.

Thank You. I'm glad you make this video. I too am guilty of using a false standard to judge my work and then get "down" because of the false comparison. You are certainly not alone. The important thing in life is to enjoy it and what you do each day. Be proud of your caretaking and also your extraordinary skills and insighte which you so willingly share with us. See you in the fall.

I am so guilty of it on both sides--both feeling bad about comparison as well as wanting to share my best work. Its really difficult to find the balance. I make mistakes ALL the time in my quilting! I really appreciate your kind words :)

Brava! I actually think summer depression is more common than folks realize. Hiding from the heat I get less sun than during the rest of the year (I live in the hellmouth that is central valley California). I'm so proud of you for taking care of yourself and speaking your truth. We all get to retreat or turn our attention to others things. The creative life has room for ebbs and flows. Big hugs!

Thank you for this reality video. It’s so true about the reality versus what we see on social. I sometimes feel bad about myself because I have the talent that was taught to me by my mom and people have appreciated their gifts but they are not perfect like a long arm quilt because use my home sewing machine. I try to take it one day at a time and do what I feel up to doing and enjoy the gift I’ve been given. I like this saying I read, “Do what you enjoy, enjoy what you do and you won’t have to work a day in your life “. I motivate myself by doing small projects I could finish and step away from anything causing me frustration
