My First Flight (and checkride) With Alerion! - Pilot VLOG 111

Here is my PIC line check with the new company, Alerion Aviation. Due to this aircraft having CRT screens rather than LCD screens, I have to get the camera frame rates synced up, so I'm sorry for the flashing on the instrument displays. This is an issue we haven't had to deal with before, but I'll get that taken care of for the next flight. I hope you guys enjoy!
I also met up with an old friend to help support her new organization, Aeronautica. This is a great resource for people interested in becoming pilots. Her website and RU-vid channel are below.

@@CorporatePilotLife maybe you could get your copilot to say "corporate pilot life" through the headset (when in the air so the background noise is similar) and dub that over the call-sign throughout the video, not the perfect solution but may be a bit smoother than a silence in the audio. Don't tell the new company your viewers are air enthusiast's and know how to find out all their flights and tail numbers on the interwebs in seconds.

Welcome back Shaun! Good to see you in the air again! Sorry you've got some extra workload in editing the N number out - I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, we appreciate your efforts! Thanks for explaining the blinking screens. I have seen this before on other channels - never knew why this happened on some channels, but not others. Makes perfect sense, CRT vs. LCD. Not a huge deal for me - I just love watching things happen out the cockpit glass! I'm easy to keep happy, lol. Hope you and your family had a Very Merry Christmas, and here's wishing you all a Happy, Prosperous New Year. Looking forward to seeing your videos through 2019. Glad I found your channel! That has to be a pain in the butt to have to go through and blank the tail number audio throughout the video. And it’s annoying as a listener but I get it. I promise not to harass Alerion! And thanks for taking the trouble, good to see you flying again!

Maybe there is an automated feature that can search thru the video and replace the call signs with "Presidential 69". Hahaha

I can't even be mad we don't get a tail number because that's such an incredible pain in the ass to edit out I just have to respect the work Sean's gotta put in to clear the videos.

Cool Shaun. Glad you are back in the seat. Left seat now. "Cool Beans". Are you going to say, "vamanos"? It will be extra editing to get the "N" number out of the conversation. Oh well, it is what it is.

It took me 5 minutes to figure out the tail number. Your employer has the right to set a policy and I respect you and them enough to not type the numbers into this reply. I searched because I felt challenged. It's publically available information! The easier solution would be to adjust the policy to embargo real time release of any flights for a period of XX days. My interest is in the corporate pilot life not the business dealings of your employer. You have NEVER talked about who you were carrying. Your clients/payload are of no interest to me. For the record... I pinkey swear never to contact your boss. Stalk your movements or intearfear with your life or career. I like the content. I am happy watching and learning. Welcome back. likewise. knowing the company, aircraft type, DEP & ARR airfields (or at least region), and public archives of liveATC, it's not very hard to figure out the tail #. Just seems like added work for you, which in this gift of content creation for us, does not seem like it would/should be part of your workload.

I agree with all the comments. Tail number is on Alerion's web page along with all the interior specs. What's more of a concern is the instrument flickering that was in the video during the day but not at night. I hope this is just a frame rate glitch and will be corrected with future videos. Changing jobs is not always fun but will settle down with time. Shaun, we all wish you the best and appreciate all you do to balance your career, family, hobby and personal life. Happy New Year!

I’m actually surprised the company allows any video at all. My previous corporate flying gig would have never allowed it and my current company would feel the same way.

Maybe consider pitching the idea of using the fltplan.com "DOTCOM" callsigns? They're blocked from tracking so the privacy remains, and you wouldn't have to spend a lot of time during editing blanking out the callsign. I think they're less than $500/year, but I'd imagine for a Part 135 carrier concerned about privacy, it might be worth it.

I was going to post the same thing. But they could easily say no filming at all, so he's got to do what they want for now. Maybe after a month or two when they see the filming doesn't cause any problems, and may actually be some free advertising, they'll relax.

Yeah, found it, including its serial number, etc. I know more about the company now, too. Not sure why this gives him a sense of security? Respect for still wanting to upload having to go through every piece of audio. Thanks a lot for doing this and thanks to your new company for allowing it.

I respect that they don't let you say the tail number, but if you search Alerion Aviation on google and go to images and their Gulfstream is right there.

I think the engine static cutting in and out happened before but it's more annoying now. Do you do it manually or is it some sort of silence detection? Maybe if it is an automatic filter tune it down so the noise does not just disappear but just turns maybe a bit quieter? Shame on the tail number, i guess some of the planes are privately owned so it is associated with an owner?

Thank God your back...now I can stop the drinking and watching the fish swim around in the tank. Dont mind the tail number thing small price to get the rest. Please keep them coming so I dont fall of the wagon. Right seat guy seemed really nice. I still love the cockpit crew synergy. Your skills at crew management are spot on. Really nice to see you back Shaun, and glad they let us join along for the flight. Can understand why they don't want tail numbers included, especially since you'll be in different birds often, but that's got to be a pain in editing. So people need to realize it's understandable and no tracking a plane as it will be different ones now, and the company is fine in doing that. And they are good to let us ride along with the cameras/audio we do get. Hope you and your family, and all the viewers are having a Bless Holiday Season, that continues through the New Year!

cool vid; just now saw it. Question though - i saw you had your FD on NAV or on HDG, but that caused the command bars to request a turn even while you were close to the ground and below 400' AGL... Why not keep the FD on Pitch mode, then switch to HDG or FMS (NAV) when you pass through 400' ? having the command bars indicate a turn below 400' would be dangerous in a zero vis or low ceiling departure.

THANKS! I work near Farmingdale (not in the flying biz). Had lunch today at 32 (if you know where the hot dog/egg cream lady has her truck). Never flown into or out of Republic so it was great to see it from the air. Even in the dark could make out Route 110 and the Southern State Parkway. Good luck on your new gig!

Many years ago (OK 1985) I started working on my private while still in highschool. My instructor also trained at ERU, I'm pretty sure in Florida. Anyhow I recieved my private license 2 days before graduating HS. My best friend surprised the %$#@ out of me. As I was securing the 152 he snuck up on me and asked if I made it. He waited for the FAA examiner to leave the area first. Such great memories. I no longer fly. My friend ended up flying the F/A-18C & the G-IV while in the USMC. I always knew that he would make it that far. His father was a former fighter pilot for the USAF. I think he flew either the F-106 or the F-100; yes, really old school but AWESOME!

Maybe I am being Captain Obvious here (and sorry if there was a previous similar comment), but Alerion lists all their aircraft fleet, with tail numbers, on their website. Seems a tad "hypocritical." Understand why tail numbers would not be made public, but I do not see the difference between hearing them on a video and seeing them on a website. Flight tracking by tail number is commonplace these days.

Happy that you are back in the air, so to speak. A little disappointed at the camera placement, but I’m sure that will improve over time. Repartee and smooth flow between you and co-pilot definitely not equal to you and John. Obviously, this is a new relationship and that takes time, as well. Don't get the covering up of tail numbers... If someone wanted to they can just go to the liveatc.net archives and listen to these radio calls and just grab the tail number... Doesn't really protect anything.

Thanks for putting up with the aggravation of having to edit the all of the callsign call outs out of the audio! What a headache! I’m just glad Alerion was willing to allow you to record the flights. Maybe they will relax the callsign rules a bit before too long so you don’t have to slice and dice so much! Thanks for taking us along!

The fact that they will not allow tail numbers to be shown is WAY down the list for me. Just enjoying the cockpit activity is what it is all about anyway. The Alerion we are extremely happy they allow the cockpit videos!

I loved the Telex 850. Bought the Telex 8 and hated it. The extra pad was nice but not needed. The earpieces tend to roll forward though and that was a major letdown. I went Bose which are big bulky and hot but also didn't like the in-ear model.

Hi Sean this is an observation about no tail numbers, and it must be a pain in editing. If one goes to the Alerion website and checks out the Fleet page there is each aircraft in the fleet complete with Tail Number and picture. Just sayin'. Hang in there and enjoy the new job I'll be watching.

Hey Shaun, good to see you back in action. Is there going to be a free T shirt to the first person who can guess the tail number. Nothing in this day & (electronic) age stays secret for long. OK I read a few comments down, tail numbers on their web page, no T shirt for me.

Thats a shame about the tail numbers, I understand their concerns its really not that to work it all out anyway. More work for you editing wise. Give them a few months they may relax, We are very lucky we have what we have. Enjoy your time,

Sure its a pain, more so for Shaun having to edit them out of the dialog. But wow, cant imagine people contacting his employer as happened before, have to respect his job, without that he would have to quit making vids altogether just to protect his job. Maybe at some point it wont be an issue.

lots of efford for no reward that bleeping the tail numbers. its like 30 seconds work if you know the airport you are departing from and the arrival and even less if you know the departure time or another plane staking of right after you that you dont bleep.
