my first impressions of the first release of 2023 from @david_austin_roses,
launched in May at the Chelsea Flower Show. This stunning English shrub rose is named after danny Clarke, aka @theblackgardener this is “Dannahue”
making around 4’ x 4’ it’s a substantial shrub with once again, a beautiful colour combination of foliage Bud and flower colour
A Repeat, flowering rose producing large, open, chalice shaped flowers, rich apricot in colour, the growth tips, and outer edges of the leaves, flushed crimson red with a peachy tinge
The fragrance is strong, Rich and is awarded a 7⭐️ fragrance rating
Suitable for growing in partial shade or indirect sunlight. I’ve planted mine in a large terracotta pot and I’ll bring you my full personal review of this rose in 2024.
fragrance rating 7⭐️s

Thinking the same thought in the USA. Jude the Obscure is one of top favourite David Austin roses (I am currently growing two of them). How does this new Dannahue rose compare/contrast with Jude?

@@TheJohnGent1 I don't have Dannahue so I can't say but Jude the Obscure is my favourite fragrance in DA roses - very fruity. Another fragrance favourite is the Hybrid Tea, 'Stephen's Big Purple'. 🌹

i've got both and they are very similar and Dannahue produces 10 times as many flowers as Jude, but it doesn't have as many petals and it's not as strongly fragrant as Jude, I think both are a must in the garden if you like this globular shaped blooms.@@TheJohnGent1

@@vorong2ru Thank you. I appreciate the comment. One of the features I really like about Jude is the subtle shading toward a peachy pink, reminding me of the Peace rose colouring. Does Dannahue have that pink colouring or is it more a solid golden apricot?

@the_gardenerben Год назад
That’s not something I’m going to be able to do for you, I’m afraid Jude the obscure is not part of my collection part of my collection much as it’s pretty and fragrant, it doesn’t produce anywhere near the volume of blooms to warrant a place in the garden, it’s week and you would be lucky if it produces 12 blooms across an entire season. This new release is capable of doing hundreds.
@vorong2ru

@@N0N4M30 jude is way more fragrant and the blooms are much better shaped IMHO, but i agree with Ben it won't produce more than 20 buds per flush while Dannahue gives you plenty

The fragrance is on par with Jude the obscure this one is lighter fresher, but of the same intensity I rated Jude as a 7⭐️And Dannahue as a7⭐️ the biggest difference comes in the figure and sheer volume of flowers that this is able to produce. Jude really doesn’t produce many more than a dozen blooms in a season. This can produce 100s

How does it compare to Roald Dahl in terms of colour and flower shape? It looks quite similar to me based on the pictures/videos.
@the_gardenerben
@the_gardenerben Год назад
It’s very different indeed, this is much more of a loose bowl very similar to the shape of a Jude the obscure or a Royal Jubilee. Roald Dahl is very heavily cupped and rosetted in the centre. Colour wise this is much lighter and has a fragrance much much stronger.

Absolutely amazing ❤ thank you so much for this review! Could you please share how it compares with the Wollerton Old Hall. I am struggling to make a decision between the 2. I am looking into planting it next to the fence, in a partial shade. Would it be possible to train Dannahue as a small climber? Also it does get very hot in my location in summers, which one of the 2 is more resilient in relation to sun and heat? Thank you 🙏

Hi, and thank you for your message. I’m glad that you like the media created. Unfortunately I don’t think I’m going to be able to help you at this particular point with your enquiry. It’s too early in the day to be able to tell how this Road will compare all early signals are that its and exceptional variety. The only thing that I can say is Wetin old Hall will need quite a lot of sun for it to thrive. This particular rose will thrive in partial shade. Mine only gets several hours a day. It was also still in flow in December, meaning it still has the ability to flower low temperaturesand low light levels it is looking like it’s gonna come up quite tall and that it’s going to need some support, but I say at this point it’s too early to compare the two completely I’m afraid

Now how I wished I had watched your videos before purchasing a few of the DA roses last week. I wouldn't have bought Boscobel or the Claire Austin (climber) but bought the Claire Austin shrub that needs support/obelisk. I will be hoping to pruchase Dannahue as and when it becomes available. I am waiting for Desdemona and Roald Dahl to arrive from DA tomorrow and hope that my specimens are as lush as all the ones that are sent to you. There are so many beautiful roses it is hard to not like the odd 20 or so. Some of the ones i like and are spoken of repeatedly are now discontinued or not stocked. Do you have a review of the those that are with us no longer and their demise/problem and what is an even better substitute?

Should you wish please do work your way through the media I’ve produced. I’ve recorded reviews for around 115 rows in total, including some best of selections and in 2021, a top 10 and 2022 a top 20 most recommended David Austin, Roses none of the Roses that have been retired have any issues. Many are absolutely stunning, and if you can lay your hands on them, I now place their Latin names in all of my posts to add you in finding them you’re often find them being grown by other Nurseries, once they copy rights have expired.

@@the_gardenerben, Thank you for your response. I had the same question as these 2 varieties seems to be looking quite similar. A review side to side woukd be great. I guess that Roal Dahl doesn't produce as much blooms but it's colors might be more sophisticated. What is your opinion?
@vorong2ru
@vorong2ru 10 месяцев назад
Dannahue is also much more upright in growth and a much larger bush vs Roald Dahl. I'd recommend having both, Roald dahl has very unique color, especially buds, while Dannahue has a unique bush/leaves /tips color and produces lovely hips too. They are imho not similar in any way and you can have both for different situation..@@ewenthomas1743
