Stories about Europeans visiting America and finding everything "big" is a common theme and reminds me of this joke about drunk foreigner who fell into the hotel swimming pool and, in a panic, started screaming "DON'T FLUSH! DON'T FLUSH!"
I like to hear visitor's comments & impressions & surprises. Sometimes they are favorable, sometimes disappointing. I especially like to hear that visitors are treated well.
If you ever get a chance to come to Texas, you'll have to try smoked brisket (beef). It is slow cooked (about 10 hours) and it melts in your mouth (I mean that almost literally). The only bad thing is that once you have it, any other form of beef will be forever unsatisfying. Also, while in the south, try biscuits with gravy. They're not too big (about the size of a baseball), but they do taste good and weigh less 5 Kg. :)
Haha, I definitely learnt that - at the time I had no idea! Later on I met up with a friend who lives in California and she showed me much tastier places :) In my Final Impressions of America video on this channel hopefully it shows
Denny's is where you go at 3 AM, when the bottle is empty, and your life is fucked, and you never go to THAT denny's, you go to the good one across town
I don't get why all foreigners think Americans only eat fast food. Most Americans think it's horrific, but what's the first thing a foreigner do when they get here? Dive headfirst into a Cinnabon like a honey badger, then wash that down with a 5 Guys burger for lunch, while the dip the fries in the chocolate shake. (I've seen it!) then let's go to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. My God! NO! Just because we have all that stuff doesn't mean you should eat it everyday. To the foreigners that say all Americans are fat, I'd like to see you come on over here for a year & see how thin you'd stay. You'll soon see the struggle.
Probably because the largest "quick service" restaurant companies in Europe as of 2012, in terms of sales, were 1] McDonald's, 2] Yum!(KFC + Pizza Hut), 3] Burger King, 4] Autogrill, 5] Quick, 6] Subway 7]Domino's, and 8] Starbucks. If you go around Western Europe, I can't think of any American thing you'd see more often.
Oh dear - my stomach is turning again from six months ago! I appreciate this though, this is the first proper description of country gravy I've had so far :)
I love how you're just talking and then say "I'm in Portland" and I'm like WAIT WHAT because I live in Portland how cool! And you came on a good day. It snows maybe once every 4 years.
How the "friend", only I can say that... I LOVE THIS! My next videos in travels should be something like this. Really WONDERFUL! :D Thx for your good job! ^^
I wouldn't have thought that Denny's is an ideal place to get your first taste of America. I think of it as maybe a place truckers run in to eat; not the best representation of American food. But I'm glad you got something to eat.
Denny’s is an armpit. Most people that eat at Denny’s have no clue of what good food is. It’s like the Walmart of food chains. Sorry that you had to eat there on your first trip to the USA 🇺🇸
That was so cute how you called it mash you're adorable. Yes the portions are huge in America that's why there's so many fat Americans lol. When you order gravy or sauces at a restaurant in the US you have to tell them "only a little bit". Because a lot of places use too much.
I was in Germany to visit my sister and I thought Germany was big, people were surprisingly friendly, the food was great and fresh, the portion size was about equal to what I would receive in the US. I immediately felt like home. I think the difference is I didn't have a preconceived notion of Germany based on what was on the television and I wasn't judgemental like Europeans.
i know what you mean about the food. i very rarely eat out. i would recommend getting the a la cart items or sides. i know that at dennys they have a $2, $4, $6, $8, menu or something like that, well they have it in Southern California where i live. its called the 2, 4, 6, 8 menue i think and its cheaper and a bit smaller. i would recommend getting soda or iced tea because there are free refills and im sure those are also cheaper than getting a milk shake or other fancy drink. also a glass of water with ice is always free. i would make sure its purified but it should be lol. that would be weird if it was just tap water lol.
You're from Spain and you speak English perfectly like someone from England? I am truly impressed; I would have thought you were a native from England. What is the secret of speaking English with no Spanish accent? :)
@@Dovenpeis , that's probably not it, in that most people who come to the USA as immigrants still speak with an accent. Most likely she started studying English in her school in Spain at a young age.
Haha, thank you very much! :) If you're interested in science at all, I'm considerably more active over at ru-vid.com (new video every 2 weeks, as opposed to every few months :p)
RhymesWithFace I am interested in science - more in the areas of anthropology, astronomy, oceanography, but I'll still subscribe to your other channel! Thanks!
Very interesting! People are even more friendly in the South like in Tennessee. I love USA. It's gotten a little liberal as anywhere nowdays, but the South is still holding up good standards. Can you make another video on your experience here?
I hope you realize that most of the developed world is liberal compared to the US. Your "good standards" are actually kind of outdated traditions more than anything. I think it is funny to see this comment on a video posted by a Brittish girl since most Brittish people think the US is not liberal enough. Being from the south I imagine you have been taught that conservative ideas are much better in every way and I don't expect my comment to impact your beliefs at all. The one thing I wish is that conservative republicans could at least try to use facts to back their ideas.
+Nicholas Bakken LOL! Look at Sweden, Germany, France and the UK. Their immigration is LITERALLY causing the people to revolt. Their tax rates are off the roof. Liberals are essentially destroying their once great and gorgeous countries. Sweden will soon be third word, as will Germany in no time with the refugee invasion. Also, her standards are not "Outdated'. I know that may shock your HIP and PROGRESSIVE movement. I know it may help to elucidate your point by flooding it with condescension, but the facts are AGAINST you my friend. The top 10 poorest cities in the U.S. ARE ALL DEMOCRATIC RUN.
I'm a liberal and my liberal friends and family and I are not lazy. we just think everyone is equal and deserves a chance to be happy and healthy and live their best life wo discrimination, poverty, or oppression. just a little piece of our beliefs. and of this we are blamed smh
Next time you're in Portland or the Pacific NW, eat at Shari's instead of Denny's. Also open 24 hrs and better food. If in Seattle, I also recommend 24 Coins which is also open 24 hrs but its more upscale and a but pricey. And there's a 24 Coins across Sea-Tac International Airport.
Oh yeah, it snows in most of the North. Some places very lightly, others get FEET of snow. The south is very lucky. Southern California never gets snow.
Our food is big because it's a country of Abundance especially food. Americans used to be very hard working we got very hungry and had the food. America is young, Britain came over and other Immigrants and we had to build and farm the entire country. That work requires a lot of food. The industrial revolution and before Americans worked hard and needed that extra food for strength. Often when working we'll skip lunch and often breakfast so tend to get very hungry and when you finally eat you want a lot. It became the normal here to have big portions
When people say they came to the US, they might as well say city or state they went too. Since Americans usually only visit eight states in their lives, you gotta know where your talking about. An experience in Mississippi is very different than NYC, or Honolulu, Miami, or Colorado.
LOL That story about the meal you ordered is hilarious, running out of cranberry & gravy, then well ending up with this white version all over it unintentionally, knowing my luck something like that might happen to me while over there.
Denny’s is awful! Fast food in general is awful. People eat it because it’s cheap. People coming to America seem to run immediately to a fast food restaurant. We have much better restaurants and most of us make our own meals at home.
They tried Denny's here in Jersey but they went out of business here because Jersey is the diner capital of the world. We have more diners (24 hours at that) than any other place in the world. Too bad you had to experience Denny's. Hopefully you'll try better places next time, and I traveled to Europe, and other places, and Americans in comparison are friendlier. You can start a conversation with complete strangers too true. haha :)
Our Denny's is ALWAYS out of a half a dozen or more of ingredients, sometimes whole menu items can't be made because they have nothing to make it with. I swear a toddler could manage their truck orders better than the employees there.
I went to Cali, thought it was very Hollywood all the time, but then again i was in Hollywood! I made a video about my time there too if you wanted to check it out.
That dish really was a mess. You can ask for the gravy on the side. You can send it back to kitchen if it is unsatisfactory. And, at last resort, you can ask to speak to the manager. You could have explained your reason for dissatisfaction. He may have offered you an alternative meal or simply not charged you for the meal.
in America MASH is a TV show.what you seek is mashed potatoes.p.s. instant mashed potatoes suck. Real potatoes with real cream and real butter is soo good.
They Loaded you up with gravy because they were out of the one I promise you in the advertisement and the lack of broccoli is why you got so much turkey
Denny's is for Truckers, and stoners. I'm sorry that it was your first exposure to American dining. But, then again, you won't find much in the way of selection near a conference center that isn't in a more urban location.
The waiter/waitress is there to help you order. Just tell them what your in the mood for and they will set you up. You could have ordered something simple. Don't be shy. Btw, Denny's isn't very good.
the u s is too liberal i think. I like England, only went once, want to go again, but its true, our spaces are huge. our portion sizes are too big and unfortunately it is something we need to fix. I think Americans can learn to be more polite than we are. but i was shocked the British servers don't get tipped enough. they do an excellent job and it needs to be acknowledged in a practical way. I tried to anyway. I had an awesome time. As you are into biology, if you ever come to america again, you might be interested in my part of it. I live near U/R Strong . Rochester ny is the home of RIT which has a lot of science people and the University of Rochester /Strong is huge for certain fields of science.
Denny's I feel that you had to experience a place like Denny's. Most Americans don't eat there. It's a low end restaurant for someone on a cheap budget. I bet you crapped for three days nonstop.
Really? I love it. I always get my burgers with avocado and they always seem top notch and quality. Perhaps it is the chain you visit that isn't up to expectations?
You're the only person to eat that in America. Lol That was gravy for biscuits. It should never be served on turkey!!! I can't even believe they gave you that option to be honest. Wow! I mean American biscuits by the way.. (not sweets). If they brought that to ANY American, it would have been sent back. They probably had a good laugh with that one. Gross. You should have just ordered singles items. You can order 1 fried egg, some home fries or hash browns and a side of toast and a piece of bacon for example. You can order just an egg if thats what you want. You didn't have to order that huge meal.
If you had come to Seattle instead of Portland you'd have found out that people here are not open and friendly, snobby and aloof. Portland has been known as Seattle's hipper cousin.
