I wanted to share my experience so far as an OR/Operating Room nurse orientation so far. I talk about the transition from working night shift on a med surg floor to working day shift as an OR nurse. I also share why orientation is so long and whether or not I'm worried about losing my nursing skills. Let me know if you have any other questions for me! I'll be making a video soon about the typical work flow of an operating room nurse as well. I think that needs to be it's own video. 😊
Hi! My name is Alyssa and I'm a new grad registered nurse. I passed the NCLEX in December and have started my first nursing job.

omg you posted this the day i started as a new OR orientee!! after 9 grueling months, i'm off orientation now and i wouldn't trade this shit for the world!! orientation felt like a never ending hell and i worried if i would even last in the OR. being off orientation, i fucking love it and i'm shocked every day at the situations i'm able to handle, because last year i knew absolutely NOTHING about the OR.

I work for a crazy busy ophthalmologist as his surgery coordinator. He let me observe surgery and the nurses in the OR were amazing. They were nice and all about teaching me. And I honestly enjoyed watching them work and how they flow more than surgery itself 😂. T minus 6 months until nursing school and observing the nurses in the OR honestly helped light a fire under my but and get the ball rolling.

Thank you so much for this video. There really isn't a lot of information out there about OR nursing. I had zero OR nursing clinical experience in school. I always thought that the OR would be the place for me, but ended up taking a position on the post-op surgical floor I worked on as a student nurse, mostly because it would be an easy transition and I was already familiar with our patient population and the staff. But now I'm about nine months in and feeling super burnt out of working bedside, especially working nights, wishing I had gone into the OR right out of school. My manager has advised others in my same position to stick it out for the two year nurse residency contract while getting the fundamentals in and ACLS certification before transferring. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Felt super burnt out and dissatisfied with floor nursing and found that the OR was their happy place?

I just started my perioperative program in California almost four months ago, mine is 6 months! You absolutely hit it on the head of feeling like a nursing student all over again and basically feeling dumb everyday at work 😂 it’s totally it’s own world and there’s so much to learn. I’m learning to scrub as well as circulate, the learning process is definitely difficult.

Don't be worried about losing your nursing skills! Nursing is this wild field that there are so many opportunities. So, I graduated and went straight into the OR in 2016. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't my cup of tea, so after a year, I left and went into clinical research. That in itself is an entirely different cup of tea. However, I was fortunate to get the job, which I have done for two years and now hopefully going into a role as a clinical research associate. I know it seems like a lot, and not necessarily explained, but in my opinion, it's the ultimate role of a nurse. Regardless of my opinion, PLEASE realize that there are SO many options out there for you, that you don't have to just be a floor nurse. There are so many options that you don't even realize that profitable for the future, and worth looking at. While I have worked a couple years to get to the point where I am now, I know that I am set for the future and will make more than an APRN. Why I know that? My mom is an APRN, I'm getting my masters as an APRN...annnd I know this future job will provide for more than that. Clinical Research, is where it at, and I promise there is an absurd amount of opportunities with it...be it this job or even if you go for masters. Regardless, this is such a pandoras box of a nursing job, and I WISH so many more people knew the opportunities it had so that they went for it. I truly didn't know until I went through it myself by luck, and I think so many people should know this route!
@katherinestrotman1162
@katherinestrotman1162 5 лет назад
Sorry, I know this is so extra with this post, but I feel like it's so worth knowing that there are more options out there for nurses that aren't exactly bedside. I think there is so much value in being in the OR...I was there for a year, but knowing your knowledge and desire for growth...it's worth exploring past nursing and realizing there is more. Perhaps the clinical research route isn't your path, but it's a disservice for all nurses if they don't at least know about it. It's such a good route with an incredible amount of opportunities....and ideal for the nurse that is searching for their way...so it might not be your cup of tea..but it's worth knowing about!

You have so many great skills with the experience you have. As for the attitudes and negativity, it is in every field out there. I have gotten so callus to things, it's like nothing could shock me. I work in retail. One of the worst areas to work. I have to say I have always been fascinated with surgeries. You used to be able to watch surgery stories on TV. My husband thought I was crazy for watching them. Enjoy the experience.

Thank you for publishing vids! I've been following you - well since you were in school. I'm grateful you share your work life with us. It makes us new nurses seem less alone in this journey! I am starting with my preceptor tomorrow after 5 long weeks of didactic classes. I can honestly say I'm scared to be operating under my own licence!! It didn't help that HR told us a story of a person in the last co-hort that was in their last week of preceptorship, who had a major med error that ended in patient death. That new nurse was in their last week of preceptorship and we were told is no longer practicing. :( I can say that initial impression of my preceptor is good. She is excited and happy that I will be joining her during her shifts, which is really reassuring! But I can tell you the fear is real - tomorrow morning is going to be interesting. Best of luck with your new role! Thank you again for sharing your life with us.

In Ireland we scrub in the OR as nurses. We have a scrub nurse and a circulating nurse and then a couple others doing other jobs, along with the surgical team (the docs) and as nursing students we get right into it. I scrubbed in for a tonsillectomy in February! We don't have techs the way you guys do.

This is really interesting to see how American ORs work. In Australia the OR has usually 2 doctors a surgeon and anaesthetist. We don’t have CRNAs here. So all our anaesthetic providers are doctors. There are also always 3 nurses in the OR: the scrub, scout/circulator and anaesthetic nurse.

I’m so discouraged! I have tried medsurg, psych, hemo Dialysis, peritoneal Dialysis, home health, pediatrics, hospice, I have HATED everything! I’m starting to feel like I made a mistake in nursing. I quit so many jobs. I am also so scared lately to lose my license because the patients and family members complain and record everything these days. My nurse manager told me maybe I need to get out of direct patient care or bedside nursing and try OR circulator so I’m really hoping I like this path. I’m not complaining or anything I’m just so depressed because I have not been able to find my way in nursing. I applied for GI lab and OR so hopefully this works out better. 🙏🏻 Thanks for the video. ❤

I studied LVN in the U.S. and I'm getting my BSN in Finland. I was so worried that I wasn't being taught much because our OR sim lab was legit just 1 day ~ 6hrs and a couple of case studies in the sim lab mainly geared towards discharge and pre-op assessment etc. I was wondering how American BSN programs were. This calms me. lol When I asked my teachers why we don't get more surgical nursing skills, I mean even information on SCDs, Bovie machines, neptune or any suction machines. The tasks a circulating nurse and scrub nurse do in more detail etc. they said that not many students go that route anyways right after school and there are more pressing matters to focus on in nursing school so yeah. Nice to know it's not an isolated case.

I feel like being a OR circulator as new grad isn’t the best choice. I worked in the OR as a circulator for 3 years then went to ICU because I wanted more of a challenge. Let me tell you, just like you said “if you don’t use it you lose it” and I lost a lot of my skills. I was literally relearning everything and more. OR to critical care is a complete 180. You have so much autonomy on the floors and in the OR you are always part of a team which is nice but can also be a set back. I feel the OR is more geared towards people who have families or are retiring soon since the hours are nice (expect call) and the job is fairly simple. The surgeon and anesthesia mainly do all the work. Nonetheless it is a great job but you just have to make sure the gain of surgical experience is worth the loss of complex nursing skills.

Hi great video. I was wondering how was your experience in PeriOP 101 as far as How to set-up an operating room. The Operating Room Circulating Zone (TORCZ) is a standardized way to teach new operating rooms how to set-up the operating room. We as circulating nurses have standardized processes for so many procedures within the OR such as how to prep, how to count, how to position, how to place a foley. But, what about the MOST important and safety things we as operating room nurses on how to set-up the operating room. There is no standardized process. This is a forgotten practice and it varies from nurse to nurse. (TORCZ) teaches new operating room nurses to focus on one section at a time. If this is something you think would be helpful please let me know. thank you.

Had the opportunity to be a patient in the ER. The Dr used the line, that what I was telling him was wrong, he knew better because he is a surgeon. I smacked him down hard, he was 100% wrong, and I let him know it. He never came back in the room, I assume he looked up my records/imaging. He sent in the nurse from there. As an OR nurse, I the only assessment I do is skin assessment, I do not administer any medication i just prepared them, i do not do any patient education, i dont do any nursing skill except for foley. My patient interaction is less than 5 mins. My report for other nurses is less than 3 sentences. OR nurses have very low liabilities and the mistake you make in the OR is not as detrimental as the mistakes on the flr. Med errors on the flr kill.
