Lining the corner with bricks all the way up to the ceiling will help hold heat from the stove pipe. It will also protect the walls from overheating and possibly igniting. Looking great. Spring is on its way!

Ok folks, here's the difference between wood burners and propane. You have to TEND the fire in a wood burner plus they take up a lot of room. He doesn't have the room to devote to a wood-burner's footprint. When you are primarily using the stove to warm the space for sleeping having to get up several times a night to feed a wood-burner kind of defeats the purpose of a uninterrupted 8 hour sleep. With a propane heater, before you go to bed you check to make sure your propane bottle has enough fuel. Then you light it and go to bed. If he wanted the creature comforts of modern living he would have stayed in town. Which is why, for me, what he is doing is so interesting and why I am cheering him on.
Any decent wood burner closed down will last 8 hrs and fuel is free. I’d rather live in LA than be without a wood stove. Heck I’ve made small ones to use in my tent! lol But hey that’s me. Others are welcome to do what makes them happy 😁
I can't help but think about how warm a wood stove would get the man cave, even without insulation. And the resources to run it are free on your property. Maybe something to think about if the propane doesn't work out. You can find them used online. Really, really nice job! I love it
You can do various kinds of heat sinks with wood stoves. The problem with most random ideas is that creosote would build up, leading to your chimney catching on fire. Some wood stoves have secondary heat sources or catalytic converters, and if they're well designed, they capture most of the heat. Rocket mass heaters can achieve similar high efficiency. The details matter a lot, though. As for the heat loss on the exhaust pipe, there are various contraptions people have created. You can put heat sinks right on the stove box or on the pipe, affixing them using metal strapping. Another simple but noisy option is to get a thermal fan. The fan is powered by heat. Aim the fan so it's moving air across the exhaust pipe, and that will increase heat transfer. Note that most fans won't let you adjust the angle freely, so shop around first. Be aware that other random screwing around with propane stoves and stove pipes could potentially lead to death. A carbon monoxide sensor would be a good idea, although the super cold weather would kill the battery in it, so ... I am not sure, but think carefully before getting too reckless with the propane.

I got my first gun, a 22, at age fourteen ( many decades ago ). My Dad and I loved going to his old family farm house and do that. He was a Police Officer and serious Outdoorsman. He taught me to shoot, hunt, fish, boat, hike, camp ... all the things a Dad would normally do with a son but I was his Tom Boy Daughter and we both loved everything Outdoors! Our targets were old silver aluminum ice trays that we nailed holes in to hang high, medium and low for shooting. All of those lessons became life-long loves of mine. Tool shed is awesome!! I think the only way a little stove like that is efficient is if you surround the parts that get hot with thermal mass. Maybe bricks stacked on top and a chimney pipe over the existing one filled with sand that would hold the heat and then dissipate it slowly.

idea: hang a Hammock Diagonally.. at night.. if you're sleeping 2.. and its cold out. also hang a plastic sheet between the door and the inside.. that way you're way hotter than usual. add a USB battery bank fan.. those cheapy ones to keep the room ventilated.

Great video, as usual! What do you have against insulating your little cabin? Even just syrofoam boards between the studs would help immensely. The money you'll save on propane will pay for the insulation very quickly. Plus, don't put crazy, unnecessary bends in your flue pipe. That's dangerous. Put more bricks up the wall behind the flue pipe instead.
It’s not dangerous. Most stove pipe used to exit 90 degrees thru the wall. Back in the day two T’s were very common making in essence a rectangular O in the pipe. Heat will rise regardless. Naturally the lower T should be made with heavier gauge material because it will get hot. Back then, they came that way as a matter of course but today we’ve lost almost all of the knowledge our grand and great grandparents knew as common sense
Since you purchased the other segments of exhaust pipe, use some of the strapping materials and run a couple pipes up the outside of the existing stove pipe with angles at top to redirect warm air using convection. If you have extra patio squares, extend them up the side walls for additional thermal mass. Have you considered adding a layer of blue or pink insulation on the interior walls between studs and under the roof. Rock wool would be another alternative but probably too dusty unless you plan on covering it with additional wood on the interior. Have you considered dumpster diving behind an Italian restaurant? A friend usually gets empty 5-gallon metal cans that contained olive oil. Rinsed out and filled with sand or water they could be placed behind and around the propane stove as thermal mass; absorbing heat from the stove and slowly dissipating into the exterior. Sleep inside for the remainder of this winter. Let your body rest and get some good sleep. If you have the web material that suspended the 4-wheel cover before you added legs, staple it across the chimney corner to support clothing, boots and other items that do not require a rigid shelf for support. Final note: put up warning signs around your property perimeter warning intruders that live fire weapons are discharged without warning. Stay safe out there. Cheers
Cabin looks very nice. Shooting ranges & targets look good. Shooting .22 bullets at 50 yards can drop/raise 1/2 inch. Hip shooting is a little lower & closer to your hip. Just a few ballistics suggestions from Wisconsin, the know-it-all state. You guys are a stitch. Have fun.
nice the cabin turned out great i would live in that year round . if it was just me but the wife would have to get her own lol . speaking of that how about ring worm towers im telling ya would love to see a three or four or five story mini cabin . lol . set it up as guest rooms or storage rooms or what ever but imagine the top floor pent house . view of ring worm . hey if you build it they will come oh wait thats a different movie .lol . maybe put a deck on top of the tower . with a hot tub and a swimming pool . lol . ok i went to far dint i . lol . ether way i always enjoy the projects and a new project always gets me excited . big projects are the best and spring is coming so lots of warm weather ahead to build stuff in . going to be a great year at the worm . take care brother and enjoy the cabin you earned it .
You should look for a fan that runs off heat, runs right off the heat of the stove.. think it's the same place the stove comes from. I'd post a link but RU-vid doesn't like. Google a convection fan that runs off heat. Was one on eBay for 7$. My grandpa had a pump 22, cool!
I had a Franklin Stove for 20 years and at different places. I always mounted a 3 ft handicap railing over it for hanging stuff to dry out, warm up in the morning. Also thought about wire shelving...?
Your location there provides you with a lot of renewable fuel resources. What made you decide to use propane instead of a small pot bellied wood stove? Was it a time saver? Foil lined foam board behind the pipes may give you some reflectance and insulation factor by the stove pipe. Also search stovepipe heat reclaimers or water heaters. That may give you an idea or two for getting some of the heat out of your stack into your shed. Great build sites there in the eastern UP. One day take us on a hike to Lake Huron.
I forgot to say old milk cartons cut them in a way to leave the handle on but put your screws in them you can mark them up with the sizes etc for all your screws, bolts, nails etc, they are very good storage in the new man hut xxx
Before making your radiator your might try strappping 2 pipes on either side of the exhaust pipe and cap them with a 90. If it works the pipes will draw in air and warm it before coming out the 90 into the room
I think I enjoyed this particular episode way more than I should have! BTW, Ryan, regardless of how you prefer your tent, having this cabin (or the deer castle) available is a terrific "safety valve" should something catastrophic happen to your tent in the middle of the night. Would probably be a good idea to keep a tote in one or the other with spare clothes, boots, etc. for emergency situations.
I had a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 mag I decided to try and "fan". Already being familiar with the recoil I not only put on a glove but I decided to only go for one "fanned" shot and to keep my gloved hand moving back and away as fast as I could to avoid getting bit. Still got bit.

Could get a radiant fan to go on top of your stove it will push the heat out from the stove. Since you are not insulating nothing there willb heat loss unless you do insulate the roof use foam panels then cover it with your pine boards will stop alot of the heat loss. We use vent free gas heaters, Just lift the pipe off the stove and enjoy all the heat. If the cabin was air tite the fire would not stay lit after it used up all the oxygen. you don't have a air tight cabin. give it a shot ,it works great and won't kill you. Look up vent free heaters.
Rather than elbows you might want to flare the elbows or straight pieces and slide them onto the stove pipe. If they are flared every foot or so this would create a heat sink which would transfer heat more efficiently from the pipe to heat the cabin.
The targets you got from your welder friend are supposed to be use as part of a think called the dueling tree there very easy to build and a lot of fun I have two of them on my range and when you have a friend with you it’s a blast look it up on RU-vid. Love your videos
Yards are only slightly shorter than meters. So at 50 yards I believe you'd be at about 45 meters. Looks like a fun day of plinking regardless of the range.
Sheet metal stood out from the wall in the stove corner, the heat will make the draw in your stove pipe but you need two three way tees to make a rectangle not a zig zag you get more surface to give off heat before it goes up and out also extend and safety wire the chimney so it is taller if you are worried about draw, there is all kinds of help on line or most small hardware stores will guide you too, just ask.

In South Australia, if you took your Revolver out onto a Property to shoot at Targets you would be breaking the law, because in South Australia there are only Two lawful purposes for which one can use a Revolver. The first in Club Use and the second is Security, but only if you are a Uniformed Licensed Security Officer who is required to carry a Sidearm as part of his employment. How I envy you your freedom.
I really love the man cave but I would add a small room for sleeping that is insulated that stove would really work great in it. Then you could sleep in the buff of at least in underwear! Do you remember hoy that feels? Hey just line the man cave with thick plastic! It would let you see the wood but give us insulation factor.
What would help a lot if you put in between the 2x4s get 4x8x 1" foam bord the has the foil on the out side that would help to keep it wormer not only that it would save on propane
Is awsome I'd think it would at lest be more comfortable to stay in that then a tent & that's a nice riffle use to have one just like it but it had a octagon Barrel have learned sense then u dont sell guns lol but ur right it's a blast to have a place to go out to any time you feel like laying out some lead when ever u want & think u should build a place bigger to live out of so when ur buddys show up u can stay in same place if you wanted & you'll see that be nice to get up to in am & drink coffee lol good luck good show & god bless
You’re an idea about radiating more heat off the pipe is a great idea and they already do it. A lot of people take a thick stove pipe and they’ll weld other other pipes on the side and then they’ll put elbows in those and have them go down to the ground and as they heat up from being connected to the stove pipe the heat rises in them in such cold air off the ground heats it up and blows it out of the top, some people also put elbows on them to make it directional. But you can definitely do it. I don’t think you could weld on that pipe it looks pretty thin but you could use wire and just strap a couple more pipes to it And either bend the pipes or put elbows on them so they go wider at the bottom and as they heat from the main pipe it will suck in cold air from the bottom and blow it out the top hot and just make it much more efficient. You could also get one of those fans that runs off of the heat for a woodstove and that will help circulate. But you seem to have gotten that thing pretty well sealed up as far as air and I think that stove will heat it up pretty well. You could put skirting around the bottom to help a little bit Ke but I think that stove would help eat that pretty well. You could also add thermal mass around the stove like put some bricks next to it or behind it and overtime those would heat up and when the stove goes out it would take a little while longer for that heat to dissipate from the rocks or bricks but you don’t have a ton of room but if you could get a big rocket on there it would probably make a little difference too but just in holding the heat inside as opposed to adding more heat. Another thing would be to hang some blankets on the wall around where you’re sleeping and that would give you a little insulation and of course you could add more wood. Another good option that would be cheap would be to get that foil bubble wrap stuff and you can cut pieces of that into the wall and into the ceiling and put them underneath the flooring and it’s not super high level of insulation but it has a radiant barrier on it with that foil stuff and it will keep the heat in there much better. We had that in our garage 20 end it held heat in pretty well surprisingly and I rather shed without it was freezing all the time so it makes a difference
In the far north there are "Arctic Entrance Ways" which are used to stop high volume loss of inside heated air through an open door to the outside. Simply a very small room built with an outside door and centered on the existing door into the cabin. Walk through the outermost door, close the outermost door then open and go through the original cabin door and into the cabin. The (heated) air loss is minimal while the entrance way is often used to remove and hang outer clothing and boots to dry overnight. In the summer the inside door is often just left open and the outside door is fitted with a simple wooden screen to stop bugs coming in while allowing air flow. ******************************************** Borers in your green wood? Stop at a hardware store and pick up a Sulfur Candle or two. When you will be gone all day remove all cooking utensils and make sure that all food is wrapped. Close every window and door to seal inside air in with no leaks. Carefully secure the candle on a NON-FLAMMABLE surface (like a cinder block or rock) and light it JUST as you're leaving for the day. (((Sulfur Di-Oxide is bad for your lungs))). Immediately walk directly out and close the door behind you. Sulfur Di-Oxide kills any bugs and the hours long "Air Soak" will kill 'em all. When you return open the door and find something to do outside for an hour. Return, quickly open every window and let everything air out. An old, simple, effective system of fumigating for any and all bugs that breathe air. Ants, Borers, spiders, mosquitoes, flys, wasps and anything else that's living inside. Often times kills the eggs as well. - Joe -
Get a small damper for your pipe set it in about eye height it basically is a plate that goes in the pipe you can damp off your heat going out the pipe you need to leave it open a little bit to let the exhaust out. look it up it is called a stove damper. their are small stoves called a cub or grizzly that run on wood their small for that small space.
I would love to see your version of a rocket mass heater. Matching whimsical with practicality. Might be hard to work a chainsaw into that project, but I have faith in you.
Another way to "capture" some of your heat loss would be to load some lava rock onto the grill in your stove. Think of a bar-b-q grill. It will help radiate some of the heat down low and if you keep your eyes out you may find some on marketplace for free otherwise you can probably find a small bag in the grill section at the hardware store or Amazon.
