Track IR is great for looking into the apex. It really gives you the benefits of VR minus the depth, with no hit on performance. Looking forward to more Track IR content Dave 😊.

You finally caught up with TrackIR5. Keep settings low, turn off world movement etc in game, and its a blast. If you want the trackclip wireless, the cheap Amazon Wireless LED Clip TrackClip option is easily the best I've used so far. With my G9 Ultra Wide its a perfect combo. That hat clip makes us all look special mate. :-) Good vid. 👍

This is a blast from the past, for me. I used Track IR back before I started using VR. I do agree with Dave in regard to "less is more". I had mine set up to give me small movements to left and right and enough movement to glance down at the dash or steering wheel display. I still keep it around as a backup for when my HP Reverb decides to give up on me. I almost consider it a must for racing on a single screen.

Track IR is all about how you set it up. I have used it for many years across many genres of pc gaming starting with flight combat sims and my now love, sim racing. It is essentially plug and play and you can use the standard setup for most things but becoming confident in the use of the profile editor is when Track IR comes alive. I have Track IR 5 with both types of reflectors. The clip is definitely better holding calibration more efficiently than the hat reflectors. The downside is the cable, which is a pita, but that is due to my rig situation. I use the cap reflectors taped to my headset for most of my racing and it's great. As I said earlier though it is all about setup and getting to know what and what you cannot do. In that respect it isn't new user friendly although once you understand how to do it it is so versatile. For instance in my sim rig racing setup I have actually disabled the up and down axis's and have a large dead zone in the middle. This means I have a very stable look ahead when I am racing but just a quick glance to the sides gives me a better view than the left and right views in AAC at least. How much you have to move your own head to perform any of these actions is totally programable. You can set it up so a tiny movement to the left or right will pan behind you (check six in Combat Flight Sims) or have it on a virtually one to one basis, which is great for the realism buffs out there. Great bit of kit and I am surprised more don't speak about Track IR's merits in sim racing. One thing I will say compared to VR is that if you mount the reflectors on your headphone it helps massively with a problem that effects most sim racers in the summer months, heat. VR in my experience has the opposite effect and after taking the headset off after a session sometimes I am basically just a sweaty mess lol.

I use it on my headset too... I'm fortunate to have a headset with parallel rods running over the headband and it clips on nicely (and I use one tie wrap to make sure).. it's been on there for a couple of years.

Ahh. Memories of this back when I used to play GTR 2 full time in the pre 2010 era. Support for this was built in to the sim, however I had always yearned for a pair of VR glasses, which effectively had this and the screen in one unit.. Eventually got my HTC Vive back in 2016 and never looked back for sim racing. I had assumed VR had put Track-IR on the back footing. Nice to see they are still around.

Find one of the third-party headclips that replace the PRO that NP manufactures. The wirelessness is crucial for the best experience. Just getting into iRacing with your content after spending a fair amount of time doing flight sims; great channel! Amazed how uncommon TrackIR is among sim racers; it's virtually required for flight simming if you're not already running a full VR setup.

I was using TrackIR for years (now back to VR again) and love it. Certainly less is more and I've set it up so it's linear and slow in the center and accelerate if looking at the edges of the 49" to get full 180° if I want, even a bit more. I've never had the wish to "upgrade" the 49" to a triple-setup because it feels like triples if you can look around and never failed during a race. And the maximum vertical FOV is certainly bigger than any triple-screens available even it's quite limited compare to VR. The cap-reflectors are okay, but the TrackClip Pro is definitely worth it. It's more stable and needs no light source in front of you to reflect light. The downside is, it needs a 2nd cable and not much con for me, because I'm using tethered headphones anyway and fixing the TrackIR-cable to the headset cable is not a big deal. Both solutions don't like direct sunlight or reflections of sunlight from stuff in the room and both can fail if not using it in game for a while without TrackIR-restart, but far less with TrackClip Pro. The Cap-reflectors have the advantage that they don't change position if you leave the rig for some minutes while it's rather unlikely that you put your headphones on exactly the same as before, so last one needs more re-centering. Just don't forget to take off your cap if you go shopping😀

I only use reflectors, they are 100% reliable, daylight or night. ( only if you have some sun beams hitting the reflex it jumps, so avoid that) i always drive with the blinds down anyway, to me TRackIR is the perfect mix of immersion. @@NesterowiczRacing The reflectors can't work without any light-source shining on you, obviously and nothing beats proper VR. I'm using an 8KX and isn't great out of the box, but once everything is tweaked, it's sharp with triple-screen FOV even on 'small'.

I drive only in ACC, but even there shared view with few others trying out TrackIR and giving up on it due impression that it's more annoying gimmick then useful tool, due too shaky/nervous experience with default configuration that moved/shook all around .. and felt probably .. like what watchers of streams of game played in VR feel. I "fixed" it by customizing TR configuration for game - removed all redundant axis, leaving just turning left/right, no leaning/lifting/swiveling; - added some deadzone in mid to prevent any stuttering/vibration inevitable from head micromovements - at very beginning of turning made it at very slow race, that gradually increases the more i turn head - bound one of buttons on steering wheel to center view With TR configured this way i still able to steady turn view to apexes, do quick glances to sides/back, but in "main head turning angle" movements are steady/non shaky "head turning" where/how needed with no parasitic/unwished movements. At this point i can tell that TR is more help then annoyance (unlike with default curves/all axis enabled). Note: unfortunately if using TR in ACC, free views cameras not working anymore, i cannot detach camera from car anymore in replays or eg. when i work as team engineer looking after teammate. Heard that VR users have similar problem in ACC.

TrackIR definitely needs to be set up correctly with the software. Too many ppl just slap it on and complain that you need to turn your head too much to look around and look side-eyed. You can make it so you barely move your head to look side-to-side (couple inches at most), and a little more to look over your shoulder. It will seem too sensitive at first, but you will quickly get used to it. I've used it for 10 years and has kept me from spending money on every VR headset to come out. Will upgrade to VR eventually though.

Not trying to that guy just thought it may be worth you looking into it and check your cpu and gpu usage with MSI afterburner because you've had similar issues in the past I've seen in other videos. Something seems off.

Hey Dave would it be possible for you to show your configuration of TrackIR? Screenshots of the software would be ideal since people with both trackIR and opentrack would be able to use those!

I have trackIR for my flight sims, I couldn’t stand it in iRacing during an actual race. I used it to set up preferred viewing angle and height in each car I drive, and then got rid of it

This is amazing for content creation. I have seen many racing videos on youtube and what almost every content creator forgets is that the final video has to look good for the people watching. Everyone turns off the in game steering wheel, they use some really small FOV or they use VR which on video is always off from the center of the car and is motion sickness inducing. Even big creators make this mistake like Jardier. I understand that people set their game and settings up in a way that is best for them but as a viewer I want to see what looks good for me. I would rather watch a less interesting video that looks good than some low FOV or VR mess. This video is perfect. The FOV is perfect, seeing the ingame steering wheel is great, and the little bit headtracking just gives it that extra immersion. I honestly wish every content creator made their videos this way.

TiR still beats VR by miles for comfort and convenience, which is the main draw for me. So much easier to throw on a hat or pair of headphones and go than having to get a box on your head, get it calibrated, load up the software for it, then open the sim and blindly crawl through the menus without being able to see your mouse and keyboard. I hope one day VR is universally as easy as "pop it on and hit play"

Man tech is so crazy these days. When I was a kid in 70's and 80's this was a silly dream kids had when playing video games. To have this AT HOME and not some arcade somewhere else is so damn cool.

Highly recommend Tobii Eye Tracker 5 over TrackIR. You can disable eye tracking if you don’t like it and use it as a head tracker only or vice versa and you don’t need dots on your head for any of it. If you really want immersion though VR is the only way to go

@@davecamm My Tobii is mounted below and for Flight Simming. On iRacing it would definitely be interrupted by my wheel. However, I use the curved monitor mount on my single flat screen which could just as easily mount above in theory

Any benefit to using this with triples? I love the glancing in VR but hate the quality, this could be best of both . Further, when turning your head you are looking away from the one screen, would be nice to stay 'in the race'🤔😉

Clicked for the TrackIR, stayed for an amazing race! Do you think the IR has anything to do with your faster times, or do you think it's to do with increased frame rate from running a single screen? Or is it that you're just that good 😊

Not sure tbh although I don't think FPS had anything to do with it. Anything above 60 is fine for sim racing imo Need to do more testing 😁

I'm going to test it, but it may be useful if you have a lower fov so when you look at the right screen it actually moves to the right window. I'll do some testing 👍

When you look to see cars on the right do you have to keep your eyes on the center screen? I was watching another video and when the guy turned his head he said he had to keep his eyes centered on the screen. I'm hoping that when I turn my head and look to the right of the screen it just pans over. It would be weird to have turn my head and stare at the center of the screen. Hopefully my question makes sense.
@davecamm

I set it up so when I turned my head and looked at the outer edges of my centre screen it looked left and right. So my eyes stayed central 👍
