British Guy Reacts To The Rules of American Football for the First Time! The Rules of American Football - EXPLAINED! (NFL)
REACTION!
Original video: • The Rules of American ...
Reading back the comments on the previous video, most of you told me that college football was better and even more popular than the NFL which is a surprise.
Having watched European football my entire life non-stop, I can't get my head around how big college football is. What does the jump to the NFL take?

The NFL has 32 teams, divided into 2 conferences (AFC and NFC) that are more or less remnants of when the leagues (AFL and NFL) merged in 1970. Each conference is then divided into 4 divisions (East, North, South, and West). You play each other team in your division twice a year (6 out of the 17 games) so the rivalries within are old, mean, and nasty. For 4 of the other games, your division is matched up against one other from your conference, and you'll play the whole division. For another 4 you'll do the same with a division in the other conference. These matchups rotate each season, so you'll play everyone in the league at least once every 4 years. The last 3 games are based on results from the previous season. Each divisional winner makes the playoffs, plus the next 3 best teams in each conference, and the number 1 team in each conference gets a free pass to the second round of the playoffs. Playoffs go as they do in any league, and culminate in the Super Bowl between the champions of each conference. Hope that helped!

@@DutzyMate The main thing to know is that one team is on offense until they fail to get the 10 yards in 4 tries. Then the other team is on offense until they don't make the 10 yards in 4 downs. Usually, if a team is down to its 4th attempt, it has 2 options: try to get the 1st down, or "punt" (kick) the ball to the other team. Punting the ball means you sacrifice your 4th attempt at getting the 10 yards. But the reason teams do it is because you can (as you pointed out) punt the ball 50+ yards away, and the other team must start from where they catch it. If a team decides to "go for it" on 4th down instead of punting, and they fail to make the yards they need to get, then the defense gets possession of the ball at that same spot (instead of 50 yards away, like with a punt).

The strategy book for each team is.... thick. Very very thick. There are several different formations that both the offense and the defense use. The offensive formation that was shown is known as "The I Formation". In addition, there are also a couple of different forms of Splitback formations, Twins Formations, Ace Formation, Trips Formations, Empty Formation, Quads Formations, Bunch Formations, Shotgun Formations, Pistol Formation... and I could go on and on. There are just as many formations for the defense.
@Big_Tex
@Big_Tex Год назад
What’s shown here are just basic templates. There are a lot of different variations. Decades ago it was common to have 3 running backs and mostly run. But since then offenses have evolved to emphasize passing, so you often have one running back and 3 wide receivers. I think you were confused about the 4 downs and punting. If offense fails to get 10 yards in 4 downs they turn over possession where they were stopped. So it’s less risky to just punt on the 4th down in order to push the other team back 40 yards for their possession. If you DO gain 10 yards, the downs reset. An offense can either grind their way downfield a few yards at a time, or get a lot of yards with a big play.

Reminder - after the 4 downs, wherever you are on the field is where the other team gets the ball back, but in the other direction. If you KNOW you aren't going to either get another 1st down or a score, it makes more sense to say "fuck it" and kick the ball as far as you can, knowing whatever happens after that 4th down play (save for a score) will result in the other team getting the ball.

Each team only gets two red flags for every game. When a coach throws a red flag to challenge the ruling on the field by the refs, if the challenge is unsuccessful (meaning the ruling by the refs was correct), the team loses a time out. Time outs are generally used for strategy in the last two minutes of every half and if you start losing challenges, you will lose your two minute strategy entirely. If the team has no time outs left, they can't use their red flags at all.

I've been watching football for more than 40 years now. I watch High School, College, and the NFL. And while I recognize a few, like the easy-to-spot "I formation" there are too many for me to care. And as far as defensive formations go.... Don't they just stand out there somewhere? Ya know, in the general area they're supposed to be? Unless the guy they're covering starts running in the backfield of the offense... then they kind of chase 'em a bit. :):):) (just jokin' a bit, I know that's not how that works)

To answer your question about how much time a player actually spends on the field, a game is typically 3 hours long when counting clock stoppages and the main stars on offense and defense are gonna play most of half that time. This is actually a part of the strategy, teams will try to run as many plays as they can on offense so the defense gets tired and doesn't get a chance to rest while also giving their own team's defense more time to rest and when you're on defense you want to get off the field quickly without letting them score. The special teams player might only spend a couple minutes on the field but some of them might play both special teams and offense or defense depending on their role.

Some notes: - A balanced offense is a desirable thing (passing + running the ball). So you might hear the defense wants to "take away the run." Or the offense needs to "establish the run." - If the defense can make the offense one dimensional by taking away the run, their job becomes easier--passes are more risky so the offense is more likely to turn the ball over on downs (not make the needed 10 yards). - The offense wants to "stretch the field." Basically have success on longer passes. Because then the defense won't be able to play so tight (close to the line of scrimmage), which makes it easier to run the ball. - The clock is also a factor. An incomplete pass stops the clock. A running play keeps the clock running. So a team with a lead late in the game is likely to run the ball to run out the clock. If a team is desperately trying to score as time is winding down, they will be "airing it out" because moving the ball quickly down the field and saving time are priorities.

The profit pooling is amazing. It gives anyone a chance to get good players and win in a few years. If you sucked in the season you get first pick of upcoming players. Instead of allowing corporate sponsorship to dictate winners. Corporate sponsors sponsor the viewership, stadiums and can endorse players but cannot endorse the teams nor draft. It extends to jerseys. You will not see corporate sponsorship on NFL jerseys. That in my opinion is a big selling point of NFL. People talk a lot about adds. I rather adds during a game where you can go to the bathroom, chat in between plays than having all the money continuously going to the same teams like other sports do and constantly overloading teams with best players. What I call purchasing victories. In Football you suck you draft first. That’s fair. You can have a dominating team get bad and bad teams get good allowing fans to enjoy a highly competitive sports in which any team can someday win a superbowl with dynamic pooling.

3:46 after 3rd down if the offense hasn’t got the 10 yards they will usually bring on the special teams for 4th down to kick the ball to the other team (this is known as a punt) it forces the opposing teams offense to go further down the field to score. You’re conceding your last attempt to make the other team have worse field position. If you go for it on 4th down instead of punt and still fail to get the 10 yards needed the opposing team gets possession from that spot. Now if you’re within about 40 yards from scoring but it’s 4th down most teams will bring on the kicking team because they are in range to kick a Field Goal which is worth 3 points. This is where they kick it between those big yellow uprights. If you miss the Field Goal then the team takes over possession where you kicked the ball from so you wanna make sure it’s within your kickers range.
@Anastas1786
@Anastas1786 11 месяцев назад
2:30 You got that right. And if they move the ball 6 yards or more, either in this play or progressively between now and the two downs to follow, they get to keep the ball and we'll start counting all over again at "1st & 10". To go further: At 2:40, it's "2nd & _12"._ This clearly means the offense did _something_ wrong, because the line has moved _backwards_ at least two meters!

So no matter how you perform you always only get 4 downs till renewing it by getting a first down. But most teams if out of field goal range will punt the ball to the opposing team to give that team a longer field to try and get to the endzone. Also the time players get on the field can very greatly from game to game, it mostly just depends on how well you're offense or defense is doing.

No sport in the US or Canada has ever had promotion and relegation, and probably never will, not even MLS. When our professional sports league add teams, they are usually completely new teams that never existed before. It costs the owners of the new team what's called a "franchise fee" to join that particular league. The owners of St. Louis City SC, the newest team to join MLS, paid a franchise fee of $200 million. The owners of the Seattle Kraken of the NHL paid a franchise fee of $650 million

There are many many formations and hundreds of plays that can be executed from those formations The choice of formation and play at a given time is also very strategic.. The defense for their part must recognize the formation, the kind of play that might be executed while also disguising their defense to confuse the other team, most notatbly the quarterback who will try to "read" the defense before starting the play that was to be run, and sometimes calling out signals right at the line before the play starts to change the play based on the defense he has read. Watch the QB go to the line and look back and forth to see what defense is being shown (but may not be actually executed as again, the defense may be in disguise and do something else once the play starts).--Lots of strategy occurring at the speed of light.

You have to get 10 yards in 4 downs, but if you are at your end of the field and are not close on 4th down, you don't want to risk not making it and giving your opponent a short distance to score--sooo, you "punt" the ball as far as you can to make a long distance for them to score. When (during the game) and where (you are on the field) to use your 4th down to try to get a 1st down (i.e., 4 more downs) is a very strategic decision.

Being american and having lived in 3 european countries i would find the best way to break it down is this; european football is a game of endurance with short bursts of maximum effort and play continues except for the half time. American football is a game of strength and explosiveness where players exert their maximum effort every play as long as it lasts, usually 5-10 seconds, and then there's a 40 second timer before the next play has to begin and it's broken up by 3 intermissions. Basically one game is a game of endurance with small bursts of max effort and the other game is a game of maximum effort for short bursts with small instances of endurance.

Okay so the goal of a season is to win the Super Bowl. You get to the Super Bowl by making the playoffs. Teams in the playoffs are seeded and bracketed based on their standings at the end of the regular season. The NFL has a tool it uses to create parity. The teams that are successful have a more difficult schedule the following season which makes it more difficult to have a good record at the end of the regular season. This makes it more likely that new teams will enter the playoffs each year.

One rule that applies specifically to the offense is that the offense must have 7 players on the line of scrimmage at the start of the play. Most major college teams have more than 100 players, although I believe they can bring no more than 85 to an away game. That many players are needed, first to provide for multiple backups at each position, and second because players (with some exceptions) are only eligible to play 4 years in a 5-year period, so there is annual turnover. Players graduate or transfer to another school, and most freshman either get very little playing time or are held out of competition entirely.

So usually if they have not gotten 10 yards on 3 downs they will kick the ball on 4th down which kind of voluntarily hands the ball to the other team but much further down the field.

There are probably, practically speaking, 4 or 5 dozen formations currently in use, the same number old fashioned or easy to defend, not in use. The absolute rules are, the offense must have seven players, and only seven, on the "line of scrimmage" LOS, (an imaginary line, parallel to the goal line representing the furtherest point of progress of the ball). The only players allowed to catch a pass are the two players on the very ends of the required seven on the LOS and any player lining up behind the LOS. There can be only one forward pass per play. The defense can line up wherever in hell they want to but must be lined up further than the length of the ball away from the LOS. The structures of the sundry "teams" (offense, defense, special (team groupings specifically for plays where the ball is kicked) teams) are derived from those simple definitions. There are pages of procedural rules, offenses, penalties, and such, but these are the basics.

The reason the NFL does not have relegation is that it has: the Draft, Team Salary Caps(they are required to spend a minimum of 90% of the cap) And Free Agency. In theory and in a severals cases its possible for the worst team in the league to turn it around and win the superbowl through drafting well and aquiring free agent players. Pro/Rel is not a positive force in any league, the Premier league would be better off if they just chose the 32 teams with the largest fanbase. The Results are evident, there have been 13 different NFL teams that have won the Superbowl, While in the Premier league only 6 teams have won the league. In the NFL every single team has made a playoff appearance since 2000(only the top 12 teams(14 teams since 2020) make the playoffs). The New York Jets currently have the longest Playoff drought at 12 years, but this year signed Aaron Rodgers at QB(a quantified known probably 1st ballot hall of famer) and had a massive day at the draft, which means they have a very good chance at the playoffs this year.

Like many people, I started watching games only focusing on the offensive players and basically the ones with the ball and whatnot, but now I pay attention to the smaller details like how well the linemen block and how well the defense covers and makes tackles. I'm also a big fan of learning how coaches do their jobs i.e. communicating, designing plays, organizing their players, training, recruiting...really interesting stuff once you get into it 👍

I always found the easiest way for me to learn the finer details of a new sport is to pick up a video game of it, if you cannot play it for real. Though just watching it does help you learn (I am using that method on austrailian football league now as there are no video games). For example I always liked Hockey but I guess I never really understood it until I picked up an NHL game. Also my knowldge of offense/defense formations increased when I had to come up with strategies while playing NCAA and Madden football games.

The reason they kick the ball on the 4th down is because if they don't pick up that 10 yards by the 4th attempt, then the other team gets the ball right where they are lined up at. If they don't believe they can get another 1st down, then they will kick it further down the field, so that the other team is further away when they start their 1st down.

Using a red flag is dangerous. First, there there are only 3 challenges allowed. If a team challenges a call and they are wrong, they lose a timeout.

7:04 Idk if someone told you yet but American football is an evolution or mutation of rugby football. I don’t know the specifics beyond that, but it makes sense given the shape of the ball. I think we can also infer from that two other things: 1) you probably had to touch the ball down before, but over the years the rules changed and the name just stuck; and 2) that’s also likely why we call it football. I won’t say more than that cuz I personally hate that whole debate about the terms football and soccer.

First rule for a European to learn about American football is to forget everything they know about rugby. They have none of the same rules. They just get played on similar looking fields with goal posts. It can be easier teaching a non-sports fan American football than someone who grew up watching rugby. If you have to ask-- do they do this like rugby? then answer is NO. You need yo watch an entire game before you learn the rules. I'm not being an ass about it. I am just saying that if you watch a game you will get a better feel for what the rules and positions are and then you can get into the nuance of things on the field.

The average NFL play lasts about 5 seconds and the average team runs a little less than 70 plays per game. That means that full time starters on the offense or defense are on the field when the ball is live for around 7 minutes per game.

Numbers closer to say 10-15 seconds per play With some shorter and some longer So assuming a 50-50 split in possesion(which never happens) the number is closer to 14 minutes while the ball is live for both sides

It can definitely be confusing! But keep watching and you’ll get it! And if you ever get the chance, definitely head to a game (whether it be in the US or one of the NFL in London games)! I guarantee you’ll find some sports fans that wouldn’t mind helping to explain what’s happening. Also, just wanted to point out with the challenge flags… the head coach only gets 2 per game! So it’s not like he can throw as many as he wants. And then there are some plays that can’t be challenged, while some others are always reviewed so there’s no need to challenge. Annnnd, if the coach loses the challenge, they then lose a timeout. If they win both challenges, then they’re allowed a 3rd…. It’s a lot. lol Just come to a game! 😂

"you can't get relegated in American football which I think is terrible" hahaha relegated to what? There's only one major American football league, and it's set up to create parity, which means it doesn't have the same 3 or 4 teams at the top every single year. Pro/rel works in European football and it's great for that, but it just wouldn't work in AF. I think one of AF's strengths is that the best players are spread across the league and any given year, your team has a shot at being the best (generally, though there are some cursed teams that never seem to catch a break). Anyway, this was a fun video! Excited to see you hopefully learn more about the sort and the structure of both pro and college and all that leads up to it. Trying to compare it to everything you know about football and the way that works won't really be helpful because it's so different. I love both sports and have been to both premier league matches and NFL games. I love both and couldn't pick a favorite, but I love to see other people branch out and learn about the other.

The video you watched explained some stuff decently, but trying to explain what players do by position(e.g. the linebacker’s job is to do xyz) is a really terrible way of explaining it. Because the linebacker’s job(and every other position) can depend on so many things. It depends mainly on the defensive formation, but it can change pre-snap in response to the offense’s formation. It can change depending on the down and distance, it can change depending on the amount of time left in the quarter/half/game, etc etc.. For example if it’s 3rd and 1(third down, one yard to go to a first down) then it’s very likely the offense might run the ball rather than pass. Which means the linebacker on the defense will need to be ready to play up on the line and tackle the running back in one of the “holes” on the line of scrimmage… that’s a lot of information(probably nonsense) for someone who doesn’t know the sport, but to players/coaches/fans, that’s like absolutely baseline knowledge that doesn’t even scratch the surface… so you can probably now imagine how the game of football is just unbelievably complex. A could easily write a 2,000 character essay on any given play, explaining what happened and why and the implications of what happened and so on. In other words, it’s a real mind fuck.
@elishuk9942
@elishuk9942 Год назад
the offense gets the ball, they have 4 attempts/plays/downs to get at least 10 yards. if they do, they get another 4 downs. They are trying to work their way down close enough to score a touchdown or kick a field goal. On Tv they show a yellow line for where they need to get to for a 1st down. If on 4th down they are not confident they can get the yardage needed for the 1st down, they can opt to punt/kick the ball further down the field giving the other team the ball but further away from their endzone. All players are specialized in their positions. Offense players only on offense, Defense completely different 11 players.

If you want to get into more of the background of strategy and stuff ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K0aWuzqqUIU.html is a video going more in depth on the positions and plays. More flashy videos could be like "here comes the boom biggest hits" or most athletic plays. Football from an outsiders view may look like a barbaric mess but it really is a game of chess but the pieces are freaks of nature. The players have to memorize hundreds of plays it gets complicated. Even in highschool the week before a game your team will watch lots of footage of the other team and go over the plays to counter them then review footage again after the game.

If you want to see a specific player's highlights, I suggest Pat Mahomes. He's a quarterback, and easily the best player in the league right now. If you'd rather see defense, then Troy Polamalu. He's the best football player I've ever seen, probably could've played any position and still been incredible. It also might be a good idea to watch a full single game, even if you can't get it around copyright and put it on RU-vid. Pick a Super Bowl, I'd go for Super Bowl 43, and you'll learn plenty.

@@DutzyMate It's a scam. From my perspective, it's a rigged system that keeps the same teams at the top and the same teams at the bottom. It's like voters who vote against their own interests. It would be in the interest of the lower table teams, and their fans, to want a system with more parity so they could at least have a chance at winning championships. However, people have been convinced that winning championships isn't as important as - bragging rights, the "feelings" of the community, beating a rival, blah blah blah... That's why I think it sucks: it's a system designed to keep the same teams at the top which is boring - in my opinion.

This is my second video of yours that I tried to check out and, to me, you are simply unwatchable in this video. Like a stereotypical person of your generation you can't stop your stream of consciousness chatter long enough to pay attention and listen to what the video is trying to say. Also, you demonstrate a blatantly slanted, Anglocentric view of a sport played in the United States. I understand your use of the term "American football" to differentiate it from "European football" however American football is no more or less "real" than the "football" in Britain. Also, as an aside, do not be so quick to snidely look down your nose at the term "soccer" that was created at Oxford. Per "Brittanica" online : "Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of 'rugger' (rugby football) and 'assoccer' (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus." The term then travel across the Atlantic to the States and become a convenient way to differentiate our "football" from European football. A little less Anglocentrism and a little more of an attentive and open mind may help you grow your channel. Good luck.
