I have watched European football my entire life non-stop, I can't get my head around how big college football is. What does the jump to the NFL take? I can't imagine what it must be like going from college football to the NFL only to have fewer people watching.

13:00 Number 94 is a defensive tackle, and those dudes are typically close to 300 pounds and their role is mainly to clog the middle of the line and stop the run, so being fast is not exactly a part of the job description. Lineman are almost the slowest players on the field at any given time.

At 11:37 on a normal throw normally you can use your body to also help you get the distance you need. However with this throw he was horizontal to the ground meaning he had to maneuver him self to get enough time to throw and had to rely completely on his arm strength.

4:55 Every way you can score points in the NFL are: Touchdown plus extra point (7 points) Touchdown plus two point conversion (8 points) Touchdown with no conversion (6 points) Field Goal (3 points) Safety (2 points) And technically it's possible to score one point if you tackle the opposing team in their own endzone on a two point conversion attempt, although that's practically impossible since two point conversions happen at the 2 yard line and they'd have to go 98 yards in the wrong direction. Hope this helps.

The single point by scoring a safety on the conversion attempt *has* happened twice in college football - but both times, it was after a turnover so the one point was scored by the team that scored the touchdown, so the net result was the same as if they had kicked the extra point. As far as I know, nobody's ever scored one as the defensive team on a conversion attempt. The fact that points mostly come in chunks of 7 and 3 (with the occasional 2, 6, or 8) explains why certain scores are very common (24, for instance, is 3x7 + 1x3) and others are incredibly rare (a score of 4 can basically only be achieved via two safeties without any other points; it's happened exactly once in NFL history and once that I know of in college, though there may be more).

To answer your question YES we have had our version of VAR since 1999. The way replays/reviews work in the NFL is that each team gets 2 challenges per game. If you lose your challenge it costs the team one of the three timeouts that they get per half. If a team correctly challenges two calls to get them overturned, you are given a 3rd challenge. Additionally, any scoring play is automatically reviewed by the officiating crew. American Football is like Rugby, but there are some very important differences that make the game different. If you carry the ball into touch you get to keep the ball. It doesn't go to a throw in for the other team. If you drop a pass, there isn't a knock on foul, you just lose a down and the ball goes right back to where it was at the start of the previous play.

@@DutzyMate Yes it did. Truthfully, both sports have evolved away from the original game. If you watch you can see how the games evolved away from each other. Rugby League is probably closer to American Football than Rugby Union is.

@@DutzyMatesomewhat. There were different “codes” of football way back in the day. Overtime American football evolved into its own thing parallel to rugby football and association football (which is where the term soccer comes from). Because it became the most popular form of football in the US back in the 1800s the name stuck. Later more elements and formalized rules were added (such as the forward pass), but the name never changed.

each team takes turns trying to get the ball down the field. Rules: 4 tries to make it 10 yards. Make it and it resets to 4 more tries to make the next 10. if you run out of your 4 tries you either hand over the ball at that spot on the field, or on the 4th try kick the ball to the other team to set them back. (Called a "punt"), or try a "Field Goal" (a kick through the upright posts) A Touchdown (if the ball passes the goal line in any way during a play) = 6 pointes A Field Goal = 3 points once a team has scored a Touchdown, they can choose to go for an extra point (same as a Field Goal kick, but only worth 1 point), or go for a 2 point conversion (another touchdown worth 2 points). Passes can only go forward if thrown from behind the line you started at, otherwise they can only go back or to the side. For a catch to count, the ball must be in control and both feet touch in-bounds. If the other team's player catches the ball (an "interception") that team takes over at that point on the field and starts trying to go the other direction toward the goal line. There are a lot of other rules, but those are the big ones.

Six points for a touchdown, and an extra point field goal makes it seven. Extra points are almost automatic, so we usually think of a touchdown as seven points. The team gets three points for a field goal. The other way to score is if the defense tackles an opposing player in their end zone; that's a "safety," worth two points. (This happens only rarely.) Bear in mind that the defense can also score a touchdown if it returns an interception or field goal into the end zone. Defensive scoring is unique (as far as I know) among team sports, and adds to the already ridiculous complexity of the game.

At 6:12 that is State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals, and it is actually real grass. Every day, the field is rolled outside of the stadium, so the grass can get access to sunshine. It can be rolled back inside for the chilly winter nights, and obviously games and events. I'm pretty sure it's the only stadium in the world with this capability, but I could be wrong about that.

You have to have possession of the ball you can score and as long as your feet are still in on a pass you can score. Its a lot harder to throw the ball accurately on the run and you use your lower back to throw so having your feet planted is huge. What was special about that mahomes throw was that he was falling and threw it mid air pretty accurately.

Throw to the end zone (the final part of the field) 2 feet need to land. Running into the end zone, you just need to get the ball across, the orange sticks at the end if you can hit them with the ball that 99.9% of the time a touch down as long as your body doesn’t touch the ground first
@loganleroy8622
@loganleroy8622 Год назад
American Football Touchdowns are not like Tries in Rugby. Even though it's called a Touchdown you don't actually have to physically touch the ball down into the endzone. All that has to happen is the very tip of the ball needs to be in line with the white line (called "crossing the plane of the endzone"), it doesn't even need to cross over the white line. The orange pylon is also considered in, so if you can dive and hit the pylon with the ball before you hit out of bounds it counts. You entire body could be airborne and out of bounds, but so long as the ball hits the pylon before you touch the ground, it counts as a touchdown.

You’re watching the crème de La crème of this sport in these clips, so everything looks easy. You take a group of normal, physically fit guys and get them out there trying to make some of these throw/catches/moves/etc., under pressure of supersized guys while trying not to break one of hundreds of rules AND remember dozens of plays that depend on every single person doing a specific job and being in a specific place (keeping in mind these plays change week to week so it’s not like you can ever just fully memorize them)… well it makes a difference lol. Look forward to seeing you learn more! There a great new show on Netflix called Quarterback and it followed three different quarterback last season, including Patrick Mahomes who ended up winning the superbowl. It’s a good watch but the episode on studying and forming plays and how much of the game is actually mental on top of the physicality would be worth a watch to help you understand more. So to give a way too general summary: the offensive players that go out wide and catch passes are called wide receivers. The defensive players that line up against them are cornerbacks, and the other defenders that play back in the field are called safeties. Linebackers are the big but not massive dudes that line up between the line and the safeties. Think of them sort of like a defensive midfielder in soccer, they can play up on the ball or drift back to defend a pass.
@gregcable3250
@gregcable3250 Год назад
To be a catch in the NFL, receiver must control the ball and get both feet in bounds (one foot in college football)--because it happens do fast, this is often one of the plays that go to replay (if it is not clear cut obvious).
@stephbenson7340
@stephbenson7340 Год назад
Scoring works more or less like this. If the team with the ball takes the ball into the end zone, either by running with the ball or catching a legal forward pass inside of it, they get 6 points. This is called a touchdown. After a touchdown, the team that just scored can attempt an extra point try in one of two ways. They can kick the ball through the goalposts with the ball starting 15 yards away from the end zone, for an extra 1 point. Or, they can try to get the ball into the end zone again in one play, from 2 yards away, for an extra 2 points. If a team kicks the ball from the ground through the goalposts any other time, it's worth 3 points and is called a field goal. If the defending team tackles the player with the ball inside his own end zone, this is worth 2 points for the defending team, and is called a safety.

So.... if you can touch the ball to it *at all* and haven't gone out of bounds yourself (and you have to touch the ground for that to happen), then it can't be anything *but* a touchdown. No judgement calls, no lining up camera shots... you smack the pylon with the ball, boom, touchdown.

The college football teams I follow have been playing for like 150 years. I also know that football teams in England have been playing for even longer. So, it would never occur to me that you would watch a few videos of tackle football and think…oh yeah, this is so much better than what I and my dad and my grandad, and great…etc have dedicated so much time and passion to. That’s ridiculous, goofy as hell. It’s a great game though, with fantastic traditions and history, especially the college game…like a secret that’s been kept from the world. College football is sort of like the premier league in that there’s a bunch of teams of various sizes and levels of prestige that represent specific areas. Most people are fans of the school they attended or the team for their state or area. In the Southeast US and the Midwest (Central), college football rivals the NFL (pros) in size and importance. The “college experience” is a huge part of American culture. I’m from Michigan which is the state in the North that looks like a mitten. We’re home to two of the larger teams in College football as well as one NFL team. We have the Michigan Wolverines in blue and yellow, who are one of the 5 most historic programs, and the Michigan State Spartans in green and white (where I went), who are not as historic, but have been pretty successful in the last 15 years. Every year when these two teams play it’s a huge deal, many households will host huge parties and the winning side gets to brag for the next year. Michigan also has another rivalry with the Ohio State Buckeyes that is always played the Saturday after thanksgiving in November. The buckeyes rival the Wolverines in size and historical significance. They’ve played 118 times in their history and this is one of the most storied rivalries in American sports. This is another day where many people in households all across the state will gather to watch. This experience is similar for many other rivalries across the country: Alabama vs Auburn, Georgia Vs Florida, Oklahoma vs Texas, Oregon vs Washington, etc. College sports is engrained into life for huge parts of the population. The regionality, pageantry, and tradition is unmatched by pro sports. We also have the NFL which you’re watching here, there are 32 teams made up of the best college players and is arraigned similarly to most other pro sports. This is the bigger TV product, but doesn’t match college sports in terms of passion and history in my opinion.
