My First Sebastian Bach Experience! Skid Row Vocal ANALYSIS of "I Remember You"

So, Sebastian Bach has been on my list for four years now, and for some reason it just kept getting pushed back. Maybe because the name Skid Row concerned me that this would be extremely harsh vocals, having lived next to a Skid Row in Los Angeles for many years (and many experiences with the homelessness). Welp, wrong again, Elizabeth!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Skid Row and Sebastian Bach for the first time, performing "I Remember You”.

His problem was singing live. He's like Axl Rose, gives it too much too early and loses his voice away too quickly. And back in the 80s he was always wasted on stage. I saw them once in '92 and they were good but a bit of a let down.

One of the most underrated to come from the hair metal scene. Many knew his talent, sadly the short longevity and lack of consistency of hits after their first release banished them to tour openers rather than Top Guys. I recall at the Moscow Music Peace Festival Crew, Row, Zack Wylde, and Jason Bonham covered "Rock & Roll" with Bach and Vince going back and forth and Bach just simply destroyed him on stage. Not too surprising now the way we know Vince turned out. But back then you immediately knew this dude (Bach) had chops for days with Crew being one of the biggest acts at that show and Row being relative new comers.

‘Monkey Business’ is the Skid Row you thought you were getting. Most of the band did not even want to record this song, but Bach wanted too (He was in charge of exactly nothing at the time), and Doc McGee (who was their manager - and KISS’s manager, and Bon Jovi’s manager, listened to the rough version, sided with Bach and forced them to do it. Everyone’s telling you to do ‘Wasted Time’ but you need to do the harder stuff that the band actually wanted to do - like ‘Slave to the Grind’ or the aforementioned ‘Monkey Business’ or even ‘18 and Life’ also a power ballad.

The best way I can describe Sebastian Bach. He is a well trained war horse. There is a massive amount of power in him. He can make it prance, canter, walk, gallop and full out power run. He knows how to and when to hold back. Yet even when gentle you can feel the power there. Like petting a giant work horse. You can feel the power underneath the surface, you know that horse could hurt you but they can hold it in and be so sweet and gentle. That is Sebastian, his voice can be so sweet and gentle. But he can turn that power on whenever he pleases. It is always impressive.

She's asking us about nasality in singing and as the lead singer for over 20 years I think that it does contribute to a lot of singers being able to sound quite good. In fact a lot of guys with bigger noses are really good high pitched singers,,,, think of Steve Perry. Getty Lee. Does the nose have anything to do with it?.... But I must say that Sebastian Bach is not just nasally when he hits those really big high notes you don't hear any nasal sound at all. That's just pure kick ass

Whew, this song. I saw them play in Toronto when I was homeless, and this will always have a very special place for me. Being a kid, and being homeless, I was invisible. I fell through all the cracks. People walk by like you don’t exist, and in this song, I saw a piece of me crying, reaching out begging to be remembered, to not be forgotten. And the song being the only voice saying ‘I will remember you.’ Silly, maybe. It gave me hope when I had none. I still cry, hearing it. I was 13 years old when Skid Row's debut album came out and I immediately fell in love with Sebastian Bach. I had posters of him and the band all over my room. It was clear that he was something special and he stood out from the rest of the rock stars of the time. I remember sitting in front of my TV and watching this video over and over. I still get goosebumps when I hear this song. It's so beautiful. I really enjoyed your analysis because after all these years and hundreds of times I've heard it, you've made me hear it in a way I never did before. Like other commenters have said, you should definitely do an analysis of Wasted Time and In a Darkened Room. A few things to know about Sebastian - he began singing pretty early in his childhood and was a natural performer. When he told his father that he wanted to be a rock star his dad said that he would support him and get him the proper training to do it if he was really serious so he did go through professional vocal training. Sebastian's last name isn't really Bach. It's Bierk and his father David was an artist. One of the things he painted was the cover of Skid Row's 2nd album, Slave to the Grind. Sebastian also was on Broadway in Jekyll & Hyde, The Rocky Horror Show, and Jesus Christ Superstar. I was lucky enough to see him in Jekyll & Hyde and The Rocky Horror Show. He was amazing. He also had a role on Gilmore Girls. Sebastian's still going strong and he's one of the only rock guys from the late 80s/90s who still tries to keep that kind of music alive. I think it's so funny that people in the comments here are saying that he's an underrated singer. He absolutely is not. He's known for being one of the best rock vocalists in history. The people who say this must be really young. Just because you've never heard of someone or something doesn't mean that it's underrated. At the time Skid Row's album came out, this kind of music was incredibly popular. Anyway, those of you who want to know more about him should just Google him. There's plenty that you'll find that'll show you that he's far from underrated. There's also a semi-decent A&E Biography that was recently made about him.

Fun fact about this song: the one line at the end of the song that has the extra harmony you noticed on "I remember...", that harmony is sung by Jon Bon Jovi. He heard the song and said "I gotta be on this" so they hid him in there uncredited. In a Darkened Room by Skid Row is my favorite song in the entire world. I have it tattooed on me. It makes me emotional, and Sebastian's voice on that song is unbelievable. Please review that one!! They have been my favorite band since i was a little kid, they mean the world to me. Scotti Hill is hands down my favorite guitar player on earth (who i was lucky enough to meet a few weeks ago and is a truly wonderful person) and he is known for his highly emotive guitar solos, especially on their ballads. As far as what you expected from Skid Row, you're not wrong to think they're edgy, you just picked a soft song 😂 For heavier, edgier Skid Row, i highly recommend Monkey Business, Psycho Love, The Threat or Slave to the Grind

Not trolling. Think you either mistyped or spell check changed it, but think you mean "The Threat". And yes, I agree with you, it's an excellent song for his vocals. I'm surprised you didn't gush over that last line more. I can only think of a handful of singers in the rock arena that could deliver a final line like that. The length of the phrase, the amount of air to achieve the powerful climax, and then the tale off at the end. It's one of THE greatest rock/pop climaxes I've ever heard. He's an absolute monster in the genre. And for me, the nasality doesn't turn me off. It helps with the projection and the clarity of diction. Sebastian is at the top tier for this stuff.

Your analysis of these songs is completely fascinating to this rock drummer who knows absolutely nothing about vocal technique. In truth, I've heard "I Remember You" so many times I'd be happy not to hear it again. But your analysis made it fun to revisit this song and helped me understand it on an entirely new level. I've yet to see a vocal analyst on YT give enough credit to Sebastian's dirty/distorted screams. That's where his emotional delivery really shines and he's just on another level with it. It's really difficult to figure out how do that without wrecking your voice for the rest of the song. And it's even more difficult to scream on-pitch while walking up and down scales. Now start clean, transition to a dirty scream, then back to clean again like he does in this song. It's simply amazing, and yet too often (IMO) tragically overlooked and underrated.

This is an outstanding breakdown, and I'm not even done listening to it yet. This is a song I am working on to sing along to solo acoustic accompaniment. The absolute most important thing that I learned doing this song is what you pointed out at the beginning of this video. If I can sing this as just a part of my natural breathing, taking deep breaths that are timed just before each line, I can make it most of the way through the song. But I struggle with PND, and there is always a fear that I'm going to cough if I take a deep breath right before a line, so I'm only able to keep that up for so long before my discipline breaks. In most songs, there are breaks here and there where I can collect myself, but Bach is doing this the whole freaking song except for the solo. Every single moment of this song outside of the solo is dedicated to some kind of action that gets ready for the next line, and if I miss one of those, the entire rest of the song is kaput. I don't struggle with hitting the notes, per se. I struggle hitting the notes because, quite frankly, I'm winded by the time we get to the tough ones.

This song takes me back to when I was 16 & in love with Sebastian Bach. Now I'm 50 & still in love with this song. All the same feels...❤

One of the most perfect ballads of the era. Not just because of his awesome voice. Every instrument worked perfectly in harmony to create a classic!

I swear I watched you do a vocal analysis of Sebastian from a live show. Can't find it on the channel now. I do recommend "Wasted Time", such a beautiful and haunting song.

You brought me back to Skid Row and now I appreciate the band and Sebastian even more now - and and especially now with 30 years of music experience, I can hear all of the details you focus on!

I saw them live in a medium sized club, I can't ever forget how amazing he sang "In a Darkened Room". It felt like I was literally...well..in his voice. That only happened two other times, Steve Perry and Sharon den Adel did the same thing. Bach is just amazing!!

This song is almost 36 years old. I've seen him perform throughout the years and people still really love seeing him get up there. I don't believe i've heard him sing this nearly close to this in many, many years. But, remembering when it came out and even now, just how the whole song comes across...I think it's one of the greatest rock ballads. Especially of that era of music. Passionate. I love your disections in these videos. It allows me to really understand & picture things more, whether it's the physical body & the way it works or just giving me new imagery with the way the song itself comes across. I've had a block with singing so these things will help me get back on track.❤

18 and Life will really showcase his range and vocal skills. And the story the song tells is a killer! So true for so many young people back in the day. Great video to boot!

Years ago I was picking up my girlfriend at my best friends house. I walked in on them making out, but Skid Row's Youth Gone Wild was playing on the tv. I didn't have MTV, so I watched the video and then left. Didn't talk to either of them again, but Skid Row is still there for me. Seeing them live later on was amazing.
