the highlands of scotland are some of the most beautiful places on the planet the sense of peace and quiet you get is just amazing.

As a 10 year old kid, i recorded this off the Tv on VHS. I used to watch the battle scenes over and over again, fantastic film and as an adult the battle scenes still are some of the best out there today

Isabella from France was a total savage once she became queen. She’s known as the “she-wolf” and her story is fascinating.

Scotland is indeed a separate country from England, Wales and Ireland but they also come together as the United Kingdom...sadly any countries throughout the world that share borders have pretty much featured conflict in their histories... (even relatively new countries like the USA have had their battles with Mexico and Canada...)

Best teacher I ever had was my high school Biology teacher. Taught me so well that I aced my AP Bio exam and my notes from intro Biology as a high school freshman helped me get good grades at The Johns Hopkins University - best school for medicine in on the planet. Enough said, this high school teacher bagged our lesson one day and had us watch Wallace’s speech before the first battle, and the battle itself. Legend. I am a high school teacher and try to model myself after my BIO teacher. School is going to suck unless the teacher makes class fun. I teach history, and side note, no one uses C.E. anymore, that was a passing fad in the aughts (2000-2010) give or take a few years. Cannot wait to see your reaction! A very historically inaccurate film, but A+ when it comes to production, drama, acting, writing, and most importantly, inspiration to go out and succeed no matter what the cost!

Believe it or not, my name is John, and live in Scotland uk lol, just outside Glasgow. I love this movie, seen it over 50 times since it's release in 1995, in my eyes, the greatest movie ever made, even though it's LOOSELY basedd on the life of William Wallace, who as far as records show, was NEVER married, or had an affair with the Princess of Wales. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always cry at it, throughout the movie.

This movie literally raises every Scottish boy myself included, so buzzed to see people enjoy it!

I think one of the great things not often mentioned about this film, was Patrick McGoohan's performance as Edward Longshanks. It was such an professional and masterclass performance from an brilliant "old-school" Actor. Mel Gibson got it right in selecting Patrick for the role.

Great reaction like always Joob, this movie is epic love it and there are some fun fact about it, Many Scots were offended by the film's portrayal of Robert the Bruce as Wallace's betrayer; he's considered just as much of a national hero as Wallace. The scriptwriter Randall Wallace was inspired to write the film after learning about William Wallace during a holiday in Edinburgh. Most of the horses used in the battle scenes were fake, weighed 200 pounds, and were fuelled by nitrogen cylinders that propelled them at 30 miles per hour. And after shooting the scenes, Gibson was investigated by an animal welfare organisation who were convinced that the fake horses used were real. The blue body paint (woad) worn by the Scottish warriors in the film hadn't been used in Scotland since Roman times, around 800 years before the events detailed in the movie. It's a complete anachronism, The production used around 1500 reserve soldiers from the Irish territorial army as extras during the battle scenes. Around 40 of Wallace's descendants were used in the scenes as well. They tended to stand around Gibson during the opening shots of battles. And many extras also kept forgetting to remove their sunglasses and wristwatches, which meant the battle had to be re-shot several times. (if you look closely you can see some of them in the movie). Keep up the amazing work.

One of the top movies on my list, it is so cool. Great reaction young lady. The actors were all great and everyone helped make this film outstanding.

The real baby who became Edward III was born 3 years after the death of William Wallace, so...

Outlaw King is the much better movie for historical accuracy, plus Chris Pine.

Another one I think you'd really enjoy is Rob Roy - it's another Scottish period piece. Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, John Hurt, Tim Roth, and Brian Cox make for an amazing cast.

Another movie from that era is King Arthur(2004) starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightly. One of my favorites.

It's a movie based on an epic, for all those about to list all the historical inaccuracies. Legends were made in the past, much like they are today... through exaggeration and poetic license.

I love Braveheart but it's like the most historically accurate movie around. I think it's best to think of it more like a fantasy movie like Lord of the Rings, not a history lesson.

Several things about this time: Prima Nocte, also known as the "droit de seigneur" was normal all over feudal Europe. (maybe not among the Scots, but pretty much everywhere else) and sanctioned by the Church. The killing of horses was expected in war but also on the farm, streets and so on. Europeans ate (and still do eat, even today)"chaval", so the end of the battle also meant fresh meat for the survivors. It was a tough world.

According to court records of that time, William Wallace actually did say those words, about longshanks not being his king, and therefore didn't agree with the charge of treason. William Wallace was 'hanged, drawn and quartered' and beheaded. The movie audience was spared the details of the ordeal William Wallace had to go through, on the day of his execution. First, He was dragged naked by his heels behind a horse to the execution site, at Smithfield, London. First he was hanged, and before losing consciousness, dropped down to the ground. Then, The 'rack' pulled all the joints out of their sockets. After that, while still alive, his genitals were removed, cut out, and thrown in a fire before him. Then, while still alive, his abdomen was cut up, and his entrails spilled out, and were removed, and thrown into the same fire. The executioner then cut out Wallace's heart, and then William Wallace was beheaded. Finally, the executioner quartered William Wallace (cut off his arms and legs).

Not super historically accurate but a great emotional ride. Btw if you want more story about Robert the Bruce then The Outlaw King is another great movie about Scottish Independence.

I'm proud to say I'm a descendant of Robert the Bruce. Chris Pine made a Netflix film that continues the story of Robert Bruce and Scotland's quest for independence after Wallace died, titled: "The Outlaw King."

The Battle of Stirling was actually Stirling Bridge, Wallace used the Bridge to his advantage to trap the English in a death funnel, Wallace was actually a brilliant tactician.

Fun fact: all the location stuff in this film was actually shot in Ireland. The production company got a big tax right off from the Irish government.

Scots are genetically dispositioned towards surviving the cold, thankfully. Although the downside is that when it comes summer even in Scotland a lot of Scots struggle to deal with the heat. An australian summer would cook me alive.

It's a little subtle but it's insinuated that Philip, the Prince's "right hand man", is actually his lover. Which the King suspected and obviously despised, fearing his only son would be a weak and unworthy successor to the throne.

Ah, I watched this in cinema when I was 11 years old, good times! I really think that this genre of (historic) epics is severely missing from todays cinema culture and its a shame. But I guess I understand all the different reasons for this. Too expensive, not fast enough for modern audiences, not funny enough, fear of offending someone in multiple stages (casting the "wrong" actors, portraying countries/ethnic groups in a bad light, offending religions and so on the list of possible controversies seem endless). But especially some of the values and the positive masculinity that all these movies like Gladiator, the 13th Warrior, Braveheart, Last Samurai and so on showed feel lost in todays media.

Great movie. Another great historical movie that came out the same time but was overshadowed by this movie success is Rob Roy 1995 with Liam Nisson.. Also there is the great movie The Count Of Monte Cristo 2002

Interestingly, when Scotland and England eventually united to form Great Britain in the early 1600s, it was largely because, when Queen Elizabeth I of England died, her heir was her cousin, who also happened to be King James VI of Scotland!

The ages of the characters weren't right. The French princess was a child at that time. But she did what she said ... her husband, the first Prince of Wales, was a loser, who threatened her and her children. She became Isabella, She Wolf of France.

Please do An officer and a gentleman with Richard Gere it's such a great movie thats a military movie, a love story, a buddy movie but most of all a movie about overcoming hardship and believing in yourself. Also it has such an iconic ending.

Bruce never betrayed William. It's not even confirmed that they met at all.

"Everyone and the English" lol

Props on realizing they were disemboweling him. Started developing a complex since it seems like everyone else has no idea what is going on in that scene. I thought I learned about it in history class, but since nobody else seems to know about it I started questioning my sanity and thinking I was some nutter researching torture techniques in my spare time.

This is a great movie, get your tissues ready.

The only accurate thing about this movie are the names, "William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Edward Longshanks." you can forget the rest! It's a great movie, but it's basicly fantasy

This is a great movie with a great story with some of the best scenes have zero dialog in them, I just wish Gibson hadn't used real names, because too many people seem to get to 'hung up' on that and overlook what a great/good movie/story this is with a Great soundtrack too.

The “Brave Heart” is a title used to described Robert the Bruce Wallace’s father’s name was Alan Wallace, not Malcolm, and he would not have been killed when Wallace was a boy. Uncle Argyle is a complete work of fiction. William is shown to have romantic relations with Isabella of France, the wife of Edward II, in reality she was 9 years old when Wallace died, they never met. In the film their affair is shown to take place after the Battle of Falkirk, but at this time the real Isabella would have been just three years old and living in France. The idea that King Edward of England introduced a law that meant nobles could sleep with their female subjects on their wedding night is a ridiculous myth. Piers Gaveston, the supposed gay lover of Edward II that King Edward I throws to his death outlived the king by 5 years and was killed by a sword, not tossed out a window.

As powerfully done as this film is, I think it's a shame it didn't stick to more historical accuracy and authenticity to make it many times better. I know not everything is accurately done in history-based films and TV dramas, but Braveheart took the inaccuracy to a point of being morally one-sided and absurd just to tell a cliched action-adventure story. You ought to watch History Buffs' and Cynical Reviews' videos on Braveheart, since it's too much to type up here.

23:22 "I hate that horses were used so much in war. I don't understand." It's easy. Being on a horse is a huge advantage. It makes it easier to kill the enemies on foot because you have speed, power, and leverage. It also makes it a lot harder to kill you because you can wear much heavier armor and use that speed to avoid most danger while your enemies have no power or leverage against you. I've studied a lot of war over the last few thousand years. Take my word for it or google it yourself. A man on a war-trained horse could kill 5, 10, maybe 20 enemies. On foot, that same man might kill 1 or 2. If the battle is going badly... Oh his horse, that man can escape the battle and ride to safety fairly easily. On foot, he just dies. Horses won more battles than men did. That's why they used them. Now, when you said "You don't understand." perhaps you meant that you don't understand why people would be so cruel to horses? So imagine this. Your king tells you that you must go to war. You own a horse. Will you ride it, maybe kill 10-20 enemies AND survive the battle? Or will you keep your horse safe at home and go to war on foot, maybe kill 0-2 enemies, then probably die? For me, that's an easy choice. Now, on the other side: You're on foot in a battle like you see here. A man on a horse rides toward you, an enemy that will try to kill you. All the speed, power, and leverage are his. You will almost certainly die if he stays on that horse. It's a huge, huge advantage to be up there. Will you chop the legs of the horse, basically killing the horse and making the man fall to the ground where you can kill him too? Or will you spare the horse and carefully fight only the man and almost certainly die? For me, that's an easy choice too. That's why they used horses. That's why they didn't keep them safe at home. And that's why the soldiers killed horses first. Every bit of it is to survive the battle and get back home alive. To be clear, I don't want horses to be hurt either. But I'd rather lose a horse than lose my life.

Hacksaw Ridge, The Patriot, Braveheart, I'm glad to see how much you appreciate Mel Gibson's work, "Apocalypto" (2006) is also one of his best productions, which I can only recommend at this point.

Past, present and future Jade is always good enough for me. This was awesome and I enjoy every bit of content you post. The king who insulted the Irish kind of took me by surprise, since I happen to be of Irish descent and proud of it. Found out I was of German and Irish descent in addition to being of Danish descent during my family reunion on my Grandma Webb's side of the family July 16th this year. Got to see relatives I hadn't seen in a while plus met some distant relatives I hadn't met before let alone know that I was even related to till meeting and saw old family photos as well as territory in both Germany and Ireland and Denmark where my early ancestors originated from, plus saw a castle in Ireland which my Irish relatives resided at one point in time

This film takes place shortly after the end of the "First Hundred Years War" which was a political & military rivalry between the House of Anjou (England) & the House of Capet (France). France won quite handily & the House of Anjou's once vast holdings in western France had been diminished quite considerably (the fault of a certain King John, yes the one from Robin Hood) & after John's son, Henry III, had failed to win the lands back, an agreement was reached to end the fighting. Indeed, during the course of this film Edward I would have signed the "Treaty of Montreuil-sur-Mer" (1299, ratified by the Treaty of Paris in 1304) to officially end the conflict. To seal the pact, Edward I married King Philip of France's sister, while Edward's son, Edward II was betrothed to Princess Isabella, Philip's daughter. Ironically Isabella & Edward II's son, Edward III, would use the fact he was Philip's grandson as a claim to the throne of France some years later & so the marriage pact that ended the first hundred years war ended up being the literal cause of the second hundred years war. The invasion & attempt to conquer Scotland in this film is a direct result of the English king NOT having a war to fight in France for the first time in a hundred years. He needed something to do with all his troops.

This is a Great film. There is all kinds of wrong with accuracy. 1) Kilts didn't come into fashion until 200-300 years later. 2) Willam Wallace was a nobleman from the start. 3) The Battle at Sterling was actually at Sterling Bridge, which was a choke point for the English and the Scots decimated them. Not on a grassy field in Ireland. 4) He never met the Princess of Wales. She was all of 10 years old when he was executed. Alba gu bràth!

The kings son preferred Phillip they were lovers, until his father tossed him out the window.

Another great movie, but don’t take the events as historical facts 😂, the outlaw king it’s also set in this period, freeeeedoooooommmm!

Seen this movie a bunch of times, and it got me curious about my own ancestry. So after getting my DNA tested, I asked my mother about our ancestors, and it turns out one of my family on her side (a George Athol) immigrated to the United States way back when. Through him, my Scottish ancestry lies with Clan Stewart of Athol, descendants of Robert II. I try not to talk about it much since I'm just a goofy American and can't claim native son of Scotland.

14:43 This mistake is one of the biggest jokes in the whole movie. In real life, it was deliberately staged by the Scots on a bridge, to take the superior English numbers out of the equation. They could only cross the bridge about 2 at a time and the Scots just picked them off.

Fantastic commentary once again! Even though this is a COMPLETELY fictionalized account of William Wallace and his exploits (I mean it was one of the most a-historical "based on true events" film Hollywood had produced in a while), "Braveheart" is still an amazing action/adventure drama. Mel really knocked it out of the park. Another Mel Gibson film worth checking out is the animated film "Chicken Run." Yes, that's right, Mel lends his voice to one of the main characters. It's a really witty, charming, and amusing stop-motion film from Aardman Studios. It spoofs a myriad of Hollywood prison break war movies.

The beginning of this movie is what tyranny looks like……..
