I love the honesty of this video. Struggling with the launch, yanking on the outboard, slow fishing. Fishing is not always as glamorous as it’s made out to be. Awesome stuff! Good luck with the new rig!

Lawson, congrats on the new Rover. I've had one for a year now and here are some tips. Take the motor off when you transport. It will help you get the Rover in/out of the truck/water easier. Second, to get the Rover back in the truck, take the motor off. With a thick towel, you can tip the Rover on its side to get the wheels back on. This is especially helpful when you are not at a boat ramp. And finally, get yourself a Sand Spear--it's essential for anchoring, especially when its blowing. You're gonna love it!

If you transport without the motor into the water from the boat ramp, how do you get the motor on while in water? just carry? I’ve read not to lay the motor on its side

@@michaelhagans965 Hello Michael, here is how I do it. (Launching) - pull rover to the launch and put bow in the water. Stern is out of the water. Then mount the motor and make sure it is trimmed up (so the prop won't drag on the concrete). When ready to go, just lift up on the rear grab bar and the wheels will come out. Take the wheels back to the car then you can launch. When coming back in, paddle up to launch, pull bow up into dry area of ramp with engine trimmed and still in the water. Walk to back of rover and take motor off and set it to the side--my Tohatsu can be laid on the side but you have to switch the fuel lever off and screw in the air valve on the gas cap. Then I have a yoga mat that I'll put on the concrete, tip the rover on its side to put the wheels back on. My 6hp Tohatsu weighs about 50 lbs--its not a big deal and I'm 60. It takes maybe 1-2 mins to mount the motor.

@@marktoch95 thanks so much for the response. Must be a good rig if you still using after 3 years! I ended up getting the 9.9hp Hidea from their website. Hope it holds up at least a little bit then I’ll get a better name brand later

@@michaelhagans965 Let me know how the Hidea works out for you. 6 HP is plenty for me. Another reason to take the motor off is that I used to leave motor on when transporting (in back of truck) with bow in first. Over time, developed some stress cracks in mid-section about where rover was on tailgate. Fixed without issue using some Epoxy but I'll never transport with Motor on anymore. The fiberglass just isn't that thick. For me, it's been a great rig. When I fish with my son I simply tow his kayak. Then he can snook fish and I can trout fish without any arguments--ha. I love the ability to go just about anywhere my truck can go and the fact that I'm not paying storage fees for a boat anymore. 1. unload from the truck bed straight into the water. 2. in a rough chop, stand and absorb the shock with bent knees. 3. think tiller extension so you can stand. 4. wang stick,it's manual can't fail and cheap.5. poling is quieter then paddling, maybe a light pole . With the motor in the up position move the pin toward the transom one hole at a time till the front stops bouncing up and down at full speed. After that if the waves are high run half throttle

A keel guard is a good idea to protect the nose of the board. A smaller engine was even better. Have fun on your new micro skiff. Looking forward to see more videos fishing out on the Bote board.

This was a great video depicting the real struggles we sometimes have as fishermen. Whether its a new or different boat, fishing a new area, changing weather or whatever. Man I would find me a good used trailer for a couple hundred bucks and take the pain out of launching and loading. We use a 4 x8 flat bottom trailer for our canoes and kayaks. Beats all that work putting in and out of bed. I learned years ago that its a good idea to crank an outboard at least once before leaving home. Doesnt have to run but a few seconds. It would be nice if there was an extension for the tiller handle that crooks around so you can stir from the side instead of having to sit at an angle. Really like the new boat.

I saw a guy hit my local public ramp with a Bote on the roof rack of a freakin' late 90's Honda Civic 4 door in primer black. Damn thing had to be worth 3 times the car. But hey, he got there. Watched him unload it onto the grass next to the beach, didn't even use the ramp. Then unloaded and laid out his little outboard & all his attachments out of the back seat, slapped it together in about 10 minutes while sipping a road soda, pushed it off the beach, fired it up, and went fishin. I had to respect that kind of portability.

Even a good swimmer cant swim if they hit their head hard on something while getting thrown overboard. Instant death...Don't let your family and friends down. PFDs are totally worth it!

Another useful tactic using your train of thought, is to tow a kayak or paddle board into back country. Can take a buddy/ extra hands/ back up when things get weird.

Not to sound like a mother, you need to wear a life vest when underway. Get an inflatable. Also suggest a stick-it anchor pole. Great vids, be careful out there!

Few things. 1. you have a heavy 10 hp engine with an external tank. There are many lighter units out there like the recommended Tohatsu 9.9 2. The rover is intended to use an extended arm so you aren't sitting at the back. You can see the water coming over when you reverse. If you were a foot forward it would plane better in the chop. 3. like everyone else points out. Wear your pfd.

Tip for you... when starting your motor, as you prime the bulb you should point it up at the sky. You will be amazed that how much of a difference it makes, the bulb will get rock solid hard with gas inside that way. It is the proper way to do so, and many don't know this. In fact, usually the bulb has markings with an arrow showing you which way to hold it up. This will ensure your motor has more gas coming in to get started, and will improve your startup. Cool little skiff.

Any engine can do that when it doesn't start. I remember being 15 miles out from Cape Canaveral offshore when our engine didn't start and a storm was rolling in. It turned out later that it was the fuel/water separator that failed, but at the time we had no idea. The best part was when we pulled the plugs on the outboard to check to see if each was getting spark and I dropped the plug wrench... tink tink tink splash in 60 feet of water. Was a long day.

Cool video Lawson! Looking forward to all your future adventures. I have a pelican bass raider that my wife and I take in similar places.Once I parked by an oyster bar by Weedon island in Tampa bay and unbeknownst to me a manatee had parked beneath me. When I went to reposition and put the trolling motor in gear I startled the Manatee and with one flick of it's tail about made me fall out of the boat! My Labrador kept sleeping. An experience I'll never forget! I've also had dolphins cruise alongside. That close to the water makes it truly awesome! Have fun! I know you will.

John Bracewell I thought the same thing, John. We all know that a fishing video gives the impression that you are catching fish one after the other, and not showing the hours of fruitless effort, for obvious reasons. But that's fishing. However, it's good to see the hard times , where things don't go so well. I wonder how he got those wheels back on the skiff ? It looks like a bit of a mission getting it in the water, and maybe a battle getting it out. Our "lawso" is an adventurous lad, and top marks to him for that. Florida/gators ? don't they go together ? I'm Australian, so I know nothing about your fishing environment, but wouldn't it be a bit risky fishing in that skiff in gator country ?

@@steiny3353 gators are a lot like sharks they get close to you look and investigate however larger ones can be aggressive but people usually keep them killed out. Louisiana has a law any captured gator over 5 foot is suppose to be killed or put in a zoo/ some type of enclosure

One of our local ponds here in south Alabama (almost Florida) has a giant gator probably 11 feet or so tip to tail and several people fish the pond with her in it and so far no problems but you never know with an animal that large what could happen

Lawson check out a boat called a Twin Troller X10 by Freedom Electric. Its 10 feet long by 4 feet wide and has two electric motors recessed under the boat and runs on a 29 volt marine battery. You can put up to a 4 hp motor on it to get to your fishing spot a little quicker. I’m purchasing mine in a couple of weeks. Good luck with your new boat Dennis

I run a solo skiff and i enjoy it a lot. affordable and can run where any boats run but also hit the shallow flats. think it would be great to see some skinny water fishing and after a while of getting used to it try and hit some of the deep water. Great to see I youtube hit the micro life, keep up the great videos!

U need an extension for your tiller arm so you can stand up when your running wide open. Just bend your knees and use them as shock absorbers. Treat it like a surfboard instead of a boat. I fish off a paddle board primarily. I also find it way easier to use a kayak paddle.

Can't wait until I get back to Florida sometime Saturday, 1300 miles with kayak on top of the car from Chicago. I plan on fishing mostly in the Goodland and Everglades City areas for redfish, snook, and trout but I'm going to take along my heavy action rod and 6500 Spinfisher reel with 65# braid just in case I happen upon a tarpon. I've never caught a tarpon before but I hear with the warm weather lately they're already moving north so hopefully I at least get one on the line!

Lawson; That was soooo cool snaking thru those skinny mangrove tunnels ,I have a Hobie which is much lighter than the BOTE,,,try backing down to the water and launching right from the truck you should be able to do it with that roller extender and NOT use the wheels ,they are a pain to get off in the water,,,it's easier with the wheels getting out of the water...AND if you get tired of pull starting that engine look into the Tahatsu 9.9 w\electric start...I felt your pain pulling that think LOL the Tahatsu is a Mercury top end my 25hp runs smooth and no issues,.. You definitely need to get a jetski trailer; just back it in and float it off. That was a game changer for me and my Feelfree Lure 13.5 kayak. That thing is such a beast when I have my gear in it and just too much for me to handle when I'm by myself. Now it's no problem at all. Great video! Was glad to finally see one of these in action.

If I may suggest - after years of running my Grumman Sport Canoe with a 15 hp johnson on it - Mine would "porpoise" like your skiff if I were the only one in it - so I would pull over by some rip-rap and grab about a 50 to 75# rock and set on a moving pad I would bring with me and lay that up towards the front. That 'ballast' really smoothed out the bouncing and I could FLY! Even on windy days that would keep the nose down and be smooth as silk! After I was done fishing for the day, just toss the rock and next time - grab another! :-) Have fun with that! Looks like it'll be worth working out the kinks!

If it works the same as with my 6 HP, when you're in open water, you can set the throttle and tiller and move forward. Keep your safety leash on and lean from side to side to steer. You can make a cheap PVC 4 wheel set if your wheel rac is a problem.

Lawson, back down the ramp, before hand, tie a rope to the rail in the back. Once in position, unstrap the boat from the bed of the truck. Then control the off loading force into the water with the rope. All that carrying and pulling?

You should find a way to strap the holding bar to the front of the boat that way it doesn't Rock back or forward while the boat is moving or hopping you can go as far as even scrapping it towards the back as well so you can make it more sturdy

Lawson first let me say I love what you're doing ! Next let me give you some advice my friend. I would Definitely put that on a trailer and Not in the bed of your truck because that will rust out like mother and I don't care what king of bedliner you use ....you Will lose against salt water every time . Also think of all the gear you can put in the bed now , you'll have plenty of room for trips to the keys ! Next when launching use 2 ropes ..... one for your skiff and the other for your dolly . Push that craft as hard and far out as you can , the skiff will come off the dolly and you the just pull in the dolly and the skiff separate. ... that will save you time and effort ! Just got my skiff recently {about a month now) as well, it's a Powerfisha16 made by Stealth. I think the hull weighs about 60kg and it's glass, a bit lighter than yours but still awkward to move. A trailer definitely helps, or just try to load it straight into the water if possible. I normally kayak fish, but got the skiff to be able to cover more ground when I'm targeting more specific species of fish and need to run to certain holes/spots and also as you said to hit up spots others will have a hard time to reach.

I feel like that double and triple jerk technique might be the reason for a lot of missed hookups. Perhaps try a more predictable, less erratic retrieve and see if that gets you more hookups. I do a single jerk per crank and vary the duration of the pause. I don't want to psych the fish out. I just want to present a predictable pattern for the fish to sync and attack.

Not sure about that engine but my 30 etec usually starts on the first pull. If it doesn't its usually because of the neutral shift switch causes a no start condition. You might need to adjust the shift cable so its aligned properly

If that is a new outboard there should be a specific break-in period for the first 5-10hrs of use. Get familiar with your choke and half choke too, let the engine idle and warm up a good 2-5min while at the dock so you don't stall..start it at home the day before or morning that you go out for easier starting at the dock. I would expect 25mph when solo with a 9.9 on that craft

Great video as always, I've been fishing Everglades national park for years, mainly out of chokoloskee, as far south as Rodgers/Harney area. What you bought is and excellent skiff to get up into some really skinny water/magical places that only few see. The problem is when the typical afternoon summer T-storm rolls through and it kicks up in Big Lostman's bay, Alligator bay, Dad's etc. It can get super nasty very quick, it takes very little wind to kick up some chop back in those areas. It would be dangerous for you to venture out. My advice to you would be to get a traditional flats skiff (hell's bay, egret, maverick) and have a canoe tied to the deck. This way you can get to where you want to go safely and get into super skinny water and have a safe way home.

Hey bro I'm from New England I've I only done a little bit of Florida fishing I'm a striper guy but from what I've experienced and people I've spoken to down that way id say take that skiff to the keys. Tons of flats with some of the best fishing in the world. And despite ur belief the best thing to do is to go to a new place and ask the local bait shop owner where the fish are and what they are biting on

You might have flooded the carb bro just prime it once, pull the carb, twist the throttle up to start and pull!!! It takes a few starts to get the hang of a new tiller

U will learn ur motor n boat so keep on taking it out n it will get better n easier each time! Adjust ur trim setting but only out of waste unless ur pen is tied off to ur boat so it does not go overboard!! God Bless

Your rig is like operating a kayak but motorized. Removing beach wheels and launching is always a challenge but will improve with more experience. FYI, Life jacket while running the outboard would be the safest way to fish. Keep up the great vids

They make electric start motors, yeah. Pump the bulb! Gap the spark plug. Trim the motor. An extension handle on the tiller would allow you to stand. Wear a PFD ALWAYS! Nice video!

Look into boonedox landing gear vs the standard dolly. The boonedox will make loading/unloading, launching/landing much easier. I know it can be installed on a solo skiff, maybe the BOTE too. When I learned you say you sold the Hewes to get something smaller for some real skinny water I was like, Heck Yeah! I wanted to suggest the solo skiff but the BOTE Rover nice too. Can’t wait to see you do more catching on that.

Push the boat a little deeper in the water and pull the wheels out from underneath the boat. You’ll get a little wet but it’s easier than lifting the boat up and pulling on the wheels

Cool little boat. Looks to me like the motor needs trimmed down more to keep you from porpoising like that when trying to plane.

Bring a saw horse and pad it to,then when you get to the water put the bow in first till it floats lift the back and set it on the padded saw horse take wheels off then lift off sawhorse walk a few feet forward till it's ok to drop in and spin it and your good less effort 😁.

Love it, I miss fishing the salt marshes in Jacksonville with my 8wt and kayak. Your video reminds me of some of the feeder creeks and flats I'd squeeze into.
