Back in the day I didn't pay much attention to the extent of Mark's ability to, if only for brief durations, simultaneously sing and play independent melody lines - it's stating the obvious to say that not many people can do that! Even setting that aside, you can probably figure out why this song - and I'm thinking of the "studio versions" of which there are at least three - almost instantly became legendary/sacred amongst guitar players.

Boy does this song take me back to my teen years, in my bedroom lights off and radio up. So much good music came from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Good music is good music and just transcends generations and time So many of the groups at this time were better live and in person than the studio versions.

Mark Knopler is one of the greatest guitarist That's ever been . I remember when this song dropped I was very young and I knew then that these guys were here to stay . And he had one of the best drummers I've ever seen .

What is about a Stratocaster lead tone, with a Telecaster rhythm tone, that is so magical? These guys are unreal artists, no question. But wow those two instruments sound great together on this track.

@@ramongalvankampello5611 His signature Schecter has black pick up covers and Telecaster Metal knobs. This is the original 1961 he bought in 1977, in the video. It's the very guitar that changed the song, from it's pre-release steel guitar style, to what it became as a huge hit.

@@ramongalvankampello5611 TODAY it's a Schecter, if he plays live. But in 1980, it was a 1961 Stratocaster. I linked you an article where he talks about using his 1961 Stratocaster on this song, and how it changed the song. I'm not trashing Schecter...I would LOVE to own a Schecter myself. But facts are facts and the facts indicate you are wrong, amigo. Look at the pickups. Look at the unroasted maple neck and head stock. It's not a Schecter. It just isn't.

Yep if you want to see a clean Strat, where there's nowhere to hide this is a great example. But if you fancy something.... More... The Led Zeppelin (with Jimmy Page on lead guitar) playing "Since I've Been Loving You" live at Madison Square Gardens 1973 😉

An underrated song from Dire Straits that I also really love is Skateaway - there's just something about it. Kind of captures what it feels like to be young on a summer night, skating through the streets - it's a vibe. And I also like the lyrics. If you watch it - the video is cute, and play it with captions so you can understand the beautiful lyrics. Great reaction again! Congrats on your 10K!!!!!

At the risk of repeating myself. There is no "Greatest" because there is no way of measuring it. There are just a lot of really great guitarists out there and some we like more than others. It's in the ear of the beholder. My ears love this man. They also love Brian May but saying one is greater than the other is just nuts. They are both great and you can have a preference but that's all.

Nice reaction. Side note...chicks with the hair...it's like some sort of architecturally complex, counterbalanced...I don't even know what. I was mesmerized by the overall effect. But then I'm a dude with hair so short, I don't even own a brush or a comb. Anyway...nice channel. 😊😁
