No lie but I kind of fell off after White Pony then heard a bunch off Saturday Night Wrist then came across Hearts/Wires and good lord I've been thrashing it ever since. Possibly my favourite Deftones track.
Wow, thank you! Really means a lot, this is the stuff I'm really passionate about so it's great knowing there's other people out there getting something out of it. :)
@@mollyesanborn Yeah the best channels aren't always about how much money is invested in it or the production quality but the quality of people's character vibes. Some people can have the most fundamental or basic video quality but so long as their perspective and character are interesting then people naturally gravitate towards them. Just remember to continue to describe things with what comes to mind organically. Deep down, this is always the best. TAO!!! ☯
Gore is what happens when Chino and Sergio write the bulk of the material, and an inferior producer/engineer/mixer does the production (whoever did Gore). The sonics are so bad. The guitars are too loud and extremely harsh. The drums and vocals are buried in the middle of the mix...dull and muffled. This is the reason they went back to Terry Date for Ohms.
Just fyi, Koi No Yokan has lots of transitions between tracks. It's best to listen to the whole thing all the way through without stopping. But for reaction purposes, I'd recommend listening through the transition until the next song starts, pausing to comment and then backing up to go through the transition again into the next song. Keep up these reactions Molly. You're doing a great job!
Love it molly, keep it going, I never get tired of deftones, when I get tired of some random music nowadays, I always come back tho deftones albums on spotify, on shuffle, and get reminded off all the tracks I love and, apreciate new sounds, have a great day, and greetings from México, have a great one, always love your reactions
I agree. Deftones is my favorite band and it's always a great feeling when you forget about one of their songs and then listen to it and that moment of realization of "OH THIS SONG" like its amazing
glad you enjoyed it Molly, it is a much maligned album by some of the fanbase but I always found a lot of those criticisms overblown. The only big issue I have with it is the final mix is too compressed and it lacks that huge dynamic sound from other Deftones albums that I think would have benefitted these songs more. - you mentioned the older Deftones albums being more "acoustic" and this one being more "electric", I think you are confusing that with a certain pedal sound or tuning or distortion as Deftones whole catalog is very much "electric". "Gore" is Deftones first album in awhile to have songs with a clean electric guitar sound and something approaching more standard tunings, much of the rest of their catalog post-White Pony has grown increasingly more downtuned (add another string to the guitar every 2 albums basically haha) and they definitely lean into the distorted electric guitar sound. -Hearts/Wires is a masterpiece, glad you agree. I also agree that it would work well in a movie, preferably one directed by Michael Mann - L(MIRL) = Let's(Meet In Real Life) - Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains plays the guitar solo on "Phantom Bride" in case you did not know
Hear me out… I think that one day, in 5 or 10 years, people will look back at gore like we do to saturday night wrist. An album clearly marred by tension within the band, that turned out really strange, but in a weird beautiful way that had amazing highlights and a new experimental sound.
I fucking love gore i don't care what anyone says. I love all deftones albums, this one no less then the others, its just a bit different and thats perfect. This is an intersting album to listen to on hallucinogens
@@millerpovey Me too, the more I listen, the more small details I notice. At first it sounded like a jumble pile of crap with no direction and bad production to me, but now i can hear the subtleties of the arrangement. It's actually a boss album through and through!
I love that you really got into Hearts/Wires it’s my favorite song on the album. When people ask to hear Deftones for the first time this is definitely one of my go to tracks
I really enjoy watching your reaction/review videos, especially the Deftones albums. You have a great personality and are a charming/refreshing addition to my subscriptions. Hearts/Wires is also one of my fav tracks from this record. So hauntingly sad/beautiful. Can't wait for your next Deftones reaction video. Which album do you suppose you will listen to next? peace, A random florida man
I genuinely love this album. I feel like they took the, to quote Anthony Fantano, "shoegazey" sound of Saturday Night Wrist and they made it into a calmer album (yeah I know Fantano hated Gore). I'd put this one as my third favorite, with White Pony being the best and with Diamond eyes coming in second. Of course it is a moot point, every Deftones album is absolutely amazing.
I'd like to see you review My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album. I'd just like to see if you'd enjoy it or not. Very ambient but it's not for everyone. Looking forward to more reviews!
Great review as usual, Molly! I'm fairly certain the effects on the guitar at the beginning of LMIRL are really heavy chorus and reverb. The chorus is what gives it that smooth, watery feeling. Same effect used on Come As You Are.
Agree this is an enjoyable album! Jammed to this album the other night completely. I can only describe it like flying through clouds that switch from gray and calm to dark and full of lightning then back again. It takes you on a ride. I'm a sucker for more atmospheric and ambient music so a song like Hearts/Wires really hits home just like Tempest, Rosemary, Riviere, Digital Bath, etc. Love the songs they do that have a climactic buildup then just throw you in the fire. Gore is a really solid Deftones album!
I’ve been biting my tongue because you haven’t done Saturday night Wrist yet. It was such a turn for them. Please keep doing these Molly. Love watching your reactions to Deftones. I cannot wait to see which album you pick next!
Gore is very underrated. The first half is good and then BAM, that second half is some of the strongest tracks in Deftones' history. Personally, this is one of my fav. Deftones albums, somewhat behind Diamond Eyes, but WAY higher than their first albums. Some fans feel the opposite but I am a fan of the newer stuff! Great video.
Thanks for watching the video, glad you enjoyed it :) Yeah, Deftones really doesn't have a bad album imo. A lot of people seem to rank Gore low in their discography but it is still an incredible album!
This album was just so damned different. Not bad different just like I remember hearing tracks like Phantom Bride and LMIRL and being like wtf. These tracks sounded more like something Team Sleep would produce, not Deftones. But the album grew on me. Pittura Infamente and Acid Hologram are my jams on this one
Gore is what happens when Chino and Sergio write the bulk of the material, and an inferior producer/engineer/mixer does the production (whoever did Gore). The sonics are so bad. Hey first time viewer and it was great to see your commentary and reaction :)) As a lifelong defotnes fan Gore is to me my lowest ranked album of their discography but its still a great album. Most songs to me are just forgettable but when I do listen to the songs that I forget about I can always find something cool about it. Prayers/Triangles, Phantom Bride, and the beautiful Hearts/Wires are all amazing and are the best songs on the album that arent forgettable. Hearts/Wires actually is not only my all time favorite defrones song but favorite song ever. Enjoyed the video and I cant wait to see your reactions to their other stuff. Especially the Self-Titled tgat I just recently feel more in love with as of late
Thanks for watching! I agree about Hearts/Wires, by far my favorite from Gore but also in my top favorite Deftones tracks overall. I am looking forward to hearing the rest of their albums, so far each one has been wild!
@@mollyesanborn they really are an experience. Just finished watching you react to White pony and its cool to see how knowlegable you are and to see the love for them grow. Excited to watch more from your channel dude. Also The order of albums btw are Adrenaline (1995), Around the Fur (1997), White Pony (2000), Deftones (2003), Saturday Night Wrists (2006), Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), Gore (2016), and Ohms (2020). I feel like every album they evolve their own sound but every third album is super amazing in how they learn what works. They also have two side albums B sides and Rarities which is a cover album of tbeir songs and others that are awesome and black stallion which is a remix of white pony.
I liked your take on this album as it is one of their outliers in their career as being much more unique than the rest of theirs. I would love to see you do a video on their unreleased/non full length album songs. They have some incredible B sides that weren't on any of their records, i.e the song lovers or smile
The only acoustic guitars they play is on a MTV special. The word your looking for is clean. It's an electric guitar with no distortion. But I'm enjoying your videos. Keep it up.
Gore is number one on my list of the best most listened to albums of 2021. I am a huge fan of Deftones (one of my favorite bands) and I find this to be a very underrated album.
I first listened to Gore when I was going through a tough time in life so that whenever I listen to it it always brings me back to the intense feelings I felt at the time. Rubicon at the end almost brings me to tears. The whole thing about how music can conjure up memories is especially true for Deftones. Lol whoa weird, as I typed "especially" you said it at the same time.
As a HUGE Deftones fan, this album just seems "off" to me. A lot of people say it needs to be mixed better, I dont exactly know why its my least favorite. Hearts/Wires & Prayers/Triangles (to me) alwasy seemed very "30sec to Mars" vibe. Perhaps because Chino and Leto were/are friends and that had some influence on the sound? You can find video of Chino at their concert, singing "The Kill" a few years back. For me tho, Gore and Adrenaline are my bottom two Deftones albums. Adrenaline just because I'm not into that aggressive sound like I was at 15 when it came out. The new album is superb, Koi No Yokan is perfect, every Deftones album is a 10/10 for me...aside from Gore and Adrenaline. Tho, love the art from Gore. Frank Maddox really captured that retro 80's/VaporWave look everyone is into these last 2-3 years. The pinks, flamingos, Miami Vice type lol Hes always ahead of the game in album/art. But even if Gore is the worst album...its still a 8 out of 10 and was better then 99% of the music released that year.
Gore is what happens when Chino and Sergio write the bulk of the material, and an inferior producer/engineer/mixer does the production (whoever did Gore). The sonics are so bad. Nice review, Molly. If you want the complete opposite of this ambient, melodic vibe in the discography, you could review Deftones - Deftones album next. I'd be curious how you compare Deftones - deftones, to any of their early more aggressive albums, even though it came later in the band's career.
The background atmospheric music that you keep talking about in this album as well as the self titled album is a combination of two genres - dream pop and witchhouse (which is basically house music but with darkness). Deftones is generally classified as a nu metal band but they cover a lot of genres of music from shoe gaze, dream pop, post metal and Electronica.
Some Deftones albums are clearly Stephen writing most the guitar melodies, they are typically more chug-a-chug. Others, like Gore, are clearly Chino tinkering with single string melodies driving the songs. It did take me several listens to really appreciate Gore, but in the end, it's another great Deftones album, not my favorite, but just top tier songwriting and beautiful stuff.
Love deftones! Hope you do all their albums. They went in a more heavy/dark direction after White Pony with self titled, great record Also most Deftones fans will say Gore is by far their worst album. I would agree but I think it's OKAY 👌🏻
I recommend giving the "(Like) Linus" album a listen too. It's the earliest album they have and it's very different compared to their official first album (Adrenaline). It definitely shows the progression that they went through to create their signature sound, so it's mostly pre-whisper singing and Chino's signature off-key singing. You can find full videos of the album here on RU-vid.
Wait, have you heard Ohms? you mentioned it so wasnt sure. I personally think Ohms is up there among their best work like Diamond Eyes, Koi No Yokan and White Pony. Should note that after their 5th album "Saturday Night Wrist" their bassist Chi was involved in a car accident that left him in a coma and then lead to his death a few years later. They shelved an entire album called "Eros" and came back with their currebt bassist Sergio Vega with what i still consider their best album, Diamond Eyes
I did listen to Ohms last year when it was released, it was the first Deftones album I heard and the only one I didn't do a reaction to. It's been a bit since listening to it but Ohms does have a great sound, I'll be curious to see what I think of it after hearing their entire discography!
Also you've got to react to their first full demo tape, Like Linus. It's actually not real it's fanmade but it has a lot of their old demos from 1990-94 and it is definitely react-able. PLEASE REACT TO IT 🔥
Gore is a weird record. As you continue your Deftones journey you'll hear more of their melodic/atmospheric stuff, but you'll also find out that they have never done it like this! This is not even metal anymore, except for some bits here and there, and I think that's one of the reasons why a lot of the fans were kinda disappointed by Gore 🤔 just to make an example, when you'll listen to Diamond Eyes you'll hear a record that's even more melodic than Gore, but it's also metal as fuck and a more "typical" Deftones record (which is by no means a bad thing, that album is an absolute masterpiece). Gore, on the other hand, is just...different. It's so weird, but I love it and I'm glad you enjoyed it too 😊 can't wait for the next reaction 😊
I will say it. I Love EVERY Deftones albums even their B-sides. I was not a fan of Gore... However...... "Diamond Eyes" holds a special place in my heart and I don't listen to it much anymore.

Really interesting to see your take on this album. Although I wouldn’t necessarily call this a bad album, it’s most definitely my least favorite in their discography. I could go on and on about all the things I didn’t like about it, but mainly it was that I didn’t like the way it was executed. Just like you said, it was lacking that push and pull, that kind of dichotomy, a piece that the guitarist Steph really contributes to the band, and it’s well known that he was quite disengaged during the writing process of this album. I like the atmosphere and mood to the album, but the performance just felt kind of lackluster, and the not so great studio mixing didn’t help either. Don’t get me wrong, the songs on this album that I really enjoy are some of my favorites out of their entire almost 3 decade spanning discography: phantom bride, Rubicon, hearts/wires. I thought acid hologram and l mirl were pretty good too, but other than that, everything else was kind of meh at best. I think this album had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it didn’t rise to that potential. Something tells me you would really enjoy their 2006 release Saturday Night Wrist. You could maybe say it’s even more diverse and experimental than White Pony, and has some of the most apparent tug-of-war feeling out of anything they’ve ever put out. It’s an album that divides many Deftones fans, but has always been one of my absolute favorites
Anyone who dislikes this album points to the mixing and production. I look over stuff like that because I focus on the vocals and overall sound. Everything plays together well and there's no skips on here for me. The album plays consistent and there's no big turns thematically.
The intrumentals of white pony, saturday night wrist, diamond eyes and koi no yokan are floating around. Its a total new and interesting experience, you will love them. especially Frank is more audible. Not meaning I dont like Chino's vocals, I love them. Just a different experience.
I dare to say that Gore is my least favorite album by Deftones, some might say that the mix is kinda weird and I do agree only in (L)MIRL, but overall I think that the track positioning was a little disapointing. Like, Pittura Infamante is one of my favorite tracks from them but it being right after Heart/Wires is such a clash, the overall tone kinda battles itself in some moments with the few more agressive parts. It's not a bad album in the slightest, but the listing of the tracks, for me at least, just created this crashing of tonality that don't really flow well when the songs bring the energy more. As you said, definitelly a more ambient and restrained album overall and I'm all in for that but the sprinkles of energy and explosion kinda breaked this concept in a fancy, weird way.
Well said, I agree with your point about the tracks not having the best flow. Some of their other albums blow me away with how amazingly cohesive they are from song to song, and I didn't get that as much on Gore. Still a very solid album though.
Rubicon is such an underrated Deftones song.❤️ That guitar distortion they use on the chorus sounds amazing. This album actually got me into this band years ago. The atmosphere of the opener drew me in on the first listen.
Gore is my least favorite Deftones album and a massive disappointment as a longtime fan. IMHO Producer Matt Hyde's style didn't fit the band, guitarist Stephen Carpenter admittedly didn't want to make this album, even apologizing to Chino Moreno for his performance on it. That's why Chino's vocals overshadow the instrumentals and the energy is lacking. However, the conflict had a positive, everything they did in their approach for Gore was the opposite of how they approached Ohms. The good news for your reviews is that the 4 albums you have left are all OUTSTANDING. If you love the ambient stuff, can't wait for you to hear "Cherry Waves" off Saturday Night Wrist or "Romantic Dreams" from Koi No Yokan. If you want intense, can't wait for your opinion on "When Girls Telephone Boys" from [Self Titled] or "Rocket Skates" from Diamond Eyes. Keep up the good work!

The guitars are too loud and extremely harsh. The drums and vocals are buried in the middle of the mix...dull and muffled. This is the reason they went back to Terry Date for Ohms.
Not gonna lie, Gore is not only my least favourite Deftones album, but I find it on its own to just not be good. I think the band themselves don't even care for this album since they barely played anything from this album when I saw them on this album's tour.
If only this album had a better mix. I’d imagine a new listener would like this more than a long time listener. It’s my least favorite album but when a band makes a ton of great something has to be a “least favorite “. Still like the album though
Yeah I can see that. As someone who's newer to them it was still a very enjoyable album, but I certainly can understand why longtime listeners who grew up with their darker, loud, intense sounds would find it less appealing.
