I just love Black Metal that gives me the "chillin at the lake with the homies vibe" and that album does just that. About the vocals, I actually don't know if its george doing them on near, but I know the bassist chris also does some vocals which should be the cleans in Canary Yellow. And yes, Night People has a Chelsea Wolfe feature. You should totally check out Lantlos. Took the same route as deafheaven, their older stuff is more Black Metal and gets way more shoegazy on their last two records. On "Wildhund" I can even sense some prog and metalcore elements. (Oh and Deafheaven has a demo you probably haven't heard of, also worth checking out)

Yeah, there's such a chill and relaxing quality to Deafheaven's music but they still infuse it with so much intensity at times too. I'll definitely have to give their EP a listen!

Heh, Deafheaven my have this awesome anthemic triumphant sound that puts a smile on your face, but the lyrics are drenched in so much irony and misery, like so much venom from a snakes fangs \m/ Still doesn't quite match the lyrics to Dream House from Sunbather though... "I'm dying." "Is it blissful?" "It's like a dream." "I want to dream." Dream House

This Album was the first album of theirs that had me on the fence about it. But looking back now, I can actually see the sound change leading up to Infinite Granite. That helps me to appreciate it more as a transitional moment. I recommend listening to Altar of Plagues "Teethed Glory & Injury". It is one of the more foward thinking heavy metal albums that blends black metal, industrial music and ambient/noise sounds. But don't get it twisted: It is bleak, unforgiving and eerie.
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn 2 года назад
Yeah, a transitional album for sure! Really an equal blend of their first three projects and the sound change on their newest Infinite Granite. It's been really cool hearing their evolution. And I'll definitely have to give Teethed Glory & Injury a listen, sounds like I'd enjoy it!

Awesome. This album is so good. I like how chill this album sounds without sacrificing the intense moments. I love Infinite Granite but sometimes you want that signature Deafheaven intensity. I found it funny when you said that part sounded like Chelsea Wolfe because it is actually her singing on the song. If you want more bands that sound like Deafheaven I've already suggested Alcest and Harakiri for the Sky (Alcest being closer to Deafheaven's sound), but I would like to add on another, MØL. They are a Danish band and I just discovered them last December. They have two albums and both are amazing. I would say they lean more towards the intense side of Deafheaven's sound more than the mellow side, though they do have mellow parts and clean singing at times.

As you pointed out, the first three songs have a remanent of New Bermuda but with some melodic and shoegaze elements that would be later developed on Infinite Granite. Then we have the most calmed songs that could easily be on Infinite Granite, yet in the end, with Glint and Worthless Animal, we can see the metal element from New Bermuda surfacing again, as if the band is struggling to fully embrace the shoegaze aspects or return to the past metal side. I love this album so much because it truly shows what Blackgaze should be: calmed heaviness (and I think that with your allegory of the ocean waves you captured that essence).
@mollyesanborn

To me, OCHL feels like "Deafheaven asking for permission to move forward with Infinite Granite" and it fascinates me. Even though I discovered them with Sunbather, the first album I bought from them was New Bermuda (and I've been keeping up ever since) and I experienced their transition as it happened, going from New Bermuda into OCHL into Infinite Granite... You Without End, Honeycomb and Near are by far my favourite tracks. You were absolutely right: the piano on You Without End is wonderful. It sounds really cathartic to me, I love it, as well as the combination of spoken prose and growling vocals. Pure bliss. I kinda feel the urge to recommend my favourite band, Oceansize, since you were mentioning how Deafheaven's music evokes the ocean from you XD Although their genre is progressive rock and there's a lot less screaming than here. The thing is that, for the most part, our opinion is almost a perfect match regarding all the bands I like that you've reacted to (Deafheaven, Weezer, and your Leprous top-tier list -I can't stress that one enough, The Valley + Bonneville as top tracks says it all). So, if our tastes are anything alike, I think there are many things about Oceansize that you might dig. Let me know if it catches your attention.

I've been listening their stuff for about a week now and all of their albums are gorgeous but yeah, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love might as well be their best work. While I do feel like Sunbather is a masterpiece in pretty much any aspect, I also feel that OCHL is another masterpiece, blending their best aspects in such a cohesive, well-put together record that every facet just turned to pure gold, and is beautiful in a way that I'm just angry I never heard of this band before.

@anarchicnerd666
@anarchicnerd666 2 года назад
So you've chewed through the entire discography now, nice :) very curious how you'd rank the albums overall now though. OCHL is definitely my favourite, but I'm very curious what you thing and looking forward to an inevitable tierlist! So, random nugget - some NSBM accusation were levelled at this album in particular when it came out, especially surrounding the lyrics to "Worthless Animal". The fervor has since died down, and personally I never bought the accusation (I just don't hear it in the lyrical content), but just so you know. ...Come to think on it, you're new to black metal - here's hoping you never come across actual Nationalist Socialist Black Metal (basically fascist metal) in your musical journey :( So, you asked for suggestions for stuff similar to Deafheaven! I have two suggestions. 1) Numenorean and their newest album Adore. If you like that particular blend of melody, melancholy, heavyness, atmosphere and anthemic ecstasy from Deafheaven's stuff, Numenorean are great - their debut album Home is basically more Sunbather and a tad derivative honestly, but Adore is a REALLY special album - ridiculously atmospheric, textured and varied throughout. Well worth a listen. 2) Sul Ad Astral and their newest album Oasis. This one is a little tougher to recommend, but it is a genuine diamond in the rough. The production is rough and a tad abrasive, but the tunes are incredibly anthemic, infectious and triumphant. Also a very weird and talented one - black metal on the more melodic side of things (with fantastic clean vocals) from New Zealand by two incredibly talented dudes that pretty much no-one gas heard of. Definitely worth a listen I think, but up to you if you can handle lower quality production constrained by tight budgets :)
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn 2 года назад
Really interesting comment, I wasn't even aware that NSBM was a thing... I feel like a lot of Deafheaven's lyrics are so deeply metaphorical that they could be twisted to apply to a plethora of themes, regardless of whether that was their original meaning. And yeah, a Deafheaven ranking would be very difficult! As they only have five albums so far I might not do a video ranking them, but we'll have to see. I'd tentatively say that Sunbather is my personal favorite, but that could easily change! I'll check out the album recommendations, thanks for suggesting them. They both sound really intriguing.

This song is amazing, thanks for sharing it with me. It has so much atmosphere, and the way it builds up is really incredible. At 4:02 it gives me all the goosebumps! I'll definitely be giving their album The Desert a listen when they release it.

I'm curious if your going to listen to Sunbather on this channel? Also if I could recommend a band or album to listen to, it would be "I let it in and It Took Everything" by Loathe. Or "Hidden History of The Human Race" by BLOOD INCANTATION! lol Your voice also has an NPR quality to it.

I actually did a Sunbather reaction video already a few months ago, it was my first Deafheaven video on my channel. And I've heard I Let It In And It Took Everything, I LOVE that album so much!! I did a review for that one on my channel if you're interested. I haven't heard the Blood Incantation album though, I'll check it out :)

You nailed it with your analysis as well as the other Deafheaven albums. It's a shame that specialized music press can't hear the nuances that you're able to. Hopefully when DH release their next album you'll be the one analyzing it in some professional media. Thanks Molly Sanborn for all your good work, you are one of my main references before listening to new music.

Favorite Deafheaven album. Love the piano and the long melodic guitar solos on You Without End. It reminds me of the '70s arena rock where you light up your cigarette lighter and sing along with the band. 🙂

Another thing I've noticed and read a lot about is that Deafheaven's songs have Post-Rock elements, quite a lot. Taking into account the lenght of the songs, some parts such as Honeycomb's and Come Back's endings, the type of melodies used and so on... I think you should react to Sigur Rós' albums, especially "Ágaetis Byrjun" and "()". Maybe many would think that such records being so calm don't have anything in common with what Deafheaven is doing... but I believe the influence of Sigur Rós and many other Post-Rock bands is present in Deafheaven's albums. Also I think "Glint" is really underrated, it's a great song and "Near" was like some sort of preview to what was coming next, "Infinite Granite" and the song that really got me into listening to Deafheaven, besides "Dream House", was "Honeycomb", so epic. Btw, I really love your videos, you're open to new things all the time, keep on doing them! :D

I can totally see the connection between Deafheaven and Sigur Ros, there are a lot of similarities with their sounds. Both bands fuse extremely calm and melodic portions with a ton of heaviness at points too. I've actually done a Sigur Ros album ranking video on my channel if you're interested. Glad you enjoyed the reaction! :)

On your metaphor of these songs being like waves coming in and pulling back, what has always stood out to me about Deafheaven compositions are that they almost always feel like tripping on acid. Intense, then frantic, almost getting lost in chaos and then finally breaking through and gliding out of it.

to me deafheaven and this album in particular is more about mixing black metal with post-rock rather than with shoehaze, in contrast with alcest for example
@robiu013

I immediately knew I would grow to love Deafheaven when I heard the styles they're mixing, but a lot of their music is hard to penetrate at first, especially if you like me had been dabbling more in punk before that. Canary Yellow was the first song by them I got hooked on and it's probably still in my TOP 5 of theirs with Dream House, Sunbather, Pecan Tree and From the Kettle Onto the Coil.

You Without End is one of the most beautiful album openers I've heard, I only dislike a little the harsh vocals here, I love deafheaven vocals, but in this specific song I would prefer a little more reverberated or just instrumental to let the guitar drive the song. But I still love it the way it is, specially how every new riff idea this song introduces mantains the beauty. A similar band to this is MOL, maybe too similar but in a good sense, you will love their first album. Another one is Astronoid, this one is curious, is like blackgaze, but without the black part.
