@@Mostly_Harmlss yeah that’s not a fair comparison, frogstomp was cool because some 15-17 yr olds made a rock album but this album was miles ahead and above!
Don't care much for their alt rock stuff, but Fungus and Science are miracles. Both top to bottom, funk/rap metal and "nu metal" perfection, respectively.
Incubus' guitarist Mike Einziger is CRIMINALLY underrated. The guy can really rip. Incubus' trajectory isn't that dissimilar from Deftones to be honest.
One of my favorite "early nu-metal" albums, 1997 was a great year for the genre, Around The Fur, Three Dollar Bill Yall, SCIENCE, Sevendust, Coal Chamber, Snot, (hed)P.E. Great Reaction Molly!
It's the sharon osbourne sound that she was throwing up everywhere on MTV and pushing it to everyone in those days. That's why all of those bands have the same sound
I saw Mr. Bungle open for Incubus and System of a Down. Bungle was getting booed because nobody in the crowd knew them or understood what was happening. When Serge came out he told the crowd they were wrong for booing and how Bungle was a big inspiration for System.
I saw this tour. Sno-Core 2000. I loved Incubus and System, and I knew who Mike Patton was obviously…but I will agree, Mr. Bungle actually put me to sleep at a rock concert. Never had that happen before. I was pretty sad, because like I said, Mike Patton is a genius level musician. That concert was great besides Mr. Bungle.
a lot of the "electronic" parts are actually guitar, the guitarist Mike Einziger is a fantastic guitarist and used a ring modulator pedal called a "gonkulator" to make a lot of those sounds, because of him that pedal gained a cult following and are very sought after. This era of Incubus with Dirk Lance on bass and DJ Lyfe on turntables is my favorite lineup of the band, really leaning into funk and experimentation, they really calmed down and became less... interesting later on.
SCIENCE is great, but Morning View is my favorite album of theirs. The two albums are VERY different. But Morning View is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Tons of people here saying they weren't good after SCIENCE and I'm just floored by it. One of the few bands that unabashedly evolve and grow imo, love Morning View too
This album is so experimental but in such a talented way. And what could be considered chaotic is balanced by the very traditional verse/chorus/verse structure of the songs. And man, there are some AMAZING riffs in those chorus!
@@mollyesanborn apparently when they started, a main influence was Mr Bungle. Took that "everything and the kitchen sink" approach but with more pop grounded songwriting. A co-worker got this on vinyl for me a couple years ago. Damn near the most thoughtful gift I've ever received.
Great reaction! I was so glad to see this video pop up on my feed. I believe Incubus made some of the greatest music of the late 90's and early to mid 2000's. I could go on and on about why they are my favorite band, but the other comments on here pretty much sum up why. My favorite thing about Incubus is that while they were nu metal OG's, touring with KoRn and Deftones, they're known for their POSITIVE and occasionally funny lyrics. The self love and positive messages on 'Make Yourself' (next album) were really unique during the raprock era.
As much as I like Incubus, I'd never actually listened to this album all the way through, so it was cool to listen along and experience this one with you.
Calgone is a play on Calgon bubble bath. In the 1980s there was a commercial that became a meme where a stressed lady says "Calgon, take me away!" And then the bubble bath becomes a tropical paradise or something. Also, they're from Calabasas, California so 'Cal' may be deeper as well.
Unrelated but there’s a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode called Space Mutiny where the villain’s name is Calgon. One of the riffs is “Me, take me away.”
Incubus started off as a Nu-Metal era version of Faith No More on Fungus Amongus and Science, on their third album Make Yourself they went in a softer direction, they still had a couple of Nu-Metal era type songs on Make Yourself but they also had other songs that were much more softer and conventional, akin to Alternative Rock/Post Grunge sounding. By Incubus’s 4th album Morning View they went full on conventional/Radio soft Rock, then on their 5th album A Crow Left Of The Murder, they went back to being experimental but in a different way. Then by their 6th album Light Grenades they went back to that Alternative Rock/Post Grunge sound. After Light Grenades that was when people started to lose interest in Incubus, they put out a few more albums after Light Grenades but it was mostly big fans of Incubus that paid attention to those more recent albums. So they are a band that have changed sounds a fair bit over the years, from being experimental to conventional back to experimental again and then back to conventional.again.
@@mollyesanborn Sure. Since they rarely, if any, have any reaction vids on them. Plus I am sure you will like how they sound from how I've seen you react to mixture of genres so far. Have fun as always!
Dredg - Leitmotif is one of the best albums of its time. Their sound afterward is good (especially El Cielo) but I don't think they ever topped Leitmotif.
@@bobby_c07 I always got the impression Dredg had 2 era's of fans. I discovered them on Pariah and prefer that sound to the earlier stuff. They were meant to tour Australia in support of Karnivool but had to pull out. I was shattered!
I remember the first time I'd ever heard Incubus in around '98. Was up late after a night out with mates and turned the TV onto the ABC to listen to RAGE (Australian early morning alternative tunes). The second song on was Certain Shade of Green and I loved it. Next day I was out to the shops to get the Album, then sat back in my room and had my mind blown. As much as I'd already heard bands like Korn, Deftones, RATM and TOOL, I'd never heard anything like it. The lead track really sums up what that album was for me.
this was my first listen to this Incubus album also...the first half seemed, if you can call it that, "rules " , but the second half "no rules"....I really enjoyed the jazzy elements in the later songs, and as you pointed out, there sounded like some definite FNM/Mr Bungle influence happening...very experimental, probably not why they called it SCIENCE, but hey....I have heard the follow up album to this one, which I think you'll enjoy
Cant wait to see you react to their next album Make Yourself. IMO the progression in their style from SCIENCE to Make Yourself was the step that really took them to the next level.
Those "percussive sounds" are the insanely gifted bassist they had at the time. The guy could slap like a maniac. I myself didn't realise that it was almost all bass when I first listened.
You should do yourself a favor and have the lyrics for these. Incubus might be one of the best lyrical bands ever and especially in their early work, it can be hard to follow. But songs like Redefine and Vitamin and New Skin all have some really great lyrics and imagery if you can decipher them and it only gets better as their albums go along. Great content, love seeing people get into some great older albums!
without a doubt my favorite Incubus album. Fungus was awful because they were young and didn't know what they were doing (they admit it). but man, I think this is their peak of creativity. yeah, they're BETTER musicians now and probably better songwriters, but I like this one more because it's so unique.
Yea this is actually by far my favorite album of theirs. Well... not far behind is Morning View, but I believe this album as absolutely underrated even by their fanbase. I am a musician and all the musician friends I ever made all agree that this album was a really sneaky peak moment for them. It's kind of hard to not think bands just get better and better or whatever is closer to your favorite album is better... but this album is a totally golden peak moment in their discography. Its so fucking good dude. It definitely has nu metal elements but there is a lot more to it that is absolutely everlasting.
The Segue track was actually a "hidden track" on the CD, back in the day. If you're not familiar, hidden tracks were just songs that would play after the final track after long periods of silence.
Nu metal bands were often were accused of having extraneous DJs that were there just because it was trendy at the time. SCIENCE era Incubus were definitely not one of those bands; the DJ was completely integral to the entire sound of this album. This is definitely one of the most fun albums from that era, and a lot of it was because of the turntables!
Yessss! I’ve been waiting for this one! My absolute favorite band ever. I hope you’ll go through all their albums. The first album that you skipped isn’t a bad one to skip if you can’t hit them all. The band largely disregards it as it was still them really copying their influences. It’s a funk metal record through and through but still worth a listen if you want! SCIENCE is by far the heaviest and most bizarre of their albums, but the songwriting improves on the albums after this and they touch on so many genres. My absolute favorite of theirs is A Crow Left of the Murder. I love them all though - even the recent ones that old school fans tend to complain about. Thanks for checking them out!!
So I’ve been wondering? Is there any songs or albums that you find yourself listening to after making a reaction video for it? Also great reaction keep it up girly!!!
I still think the best Incubus album is 'A Crow Left Of The Murder'. Purely because it was S.C.I.E.N.C.E., Make Yourself & Morning View all in one imo.
@@mollyesanborn honestly, with this group (Incubus). You are better at listening to their progression. So ie Make Yourself -> Morning View -> A Crow Left Of The Murder
Super interesting take. I love that album but it’s the sharpest turn in sound that the band took imo. More focus on bass and guitars, less atmosphere and DJ work. It grew on me though and I think Sick Sad Little World Is one of the band’s best songs.
ACLOTM is incredible. Personally my favorite as well. Ben Kenneys first with the band and it feels like him and mike are trying to out do each other on every track. Just amazing
12:27 if I'm remembering correctly they shout of Mr. Bungle, Primus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers in the linear notes of their first album. They were also into this band from Washington DC called Shudder To Think. If you want to hear a "how did this get recorded for a major label?" album, listen to Pony Express Record.
omg tysm for mentioning Shudder To Think!! Especially knowing that Incubus and Deftones referenced one of their songs live and both of them are style-bending bands, it's like a hidden influence/connection that makes sense once you know them. They're one of the coolest discoveries I made recently, and PXR is like Trout Mask Replica of post-hardcore, but also extremely good (sorry for the bold opinion).
Incubus's turntablist at the time DJ lyfe (Gavin Koppel) is a lost talent. He got kicked out of the band for a plethora of reasons. He never got back into rock and metal turntabism and kinda was under the radar after getting kicked out of the band in like 98. He'd intentionally try and distort and clip his turntables during sets by increasing the trim on his mixer after a sound check. And then he'd get into fights in the crowd. Along with accidentally almost deleting the song "Calgone" on this very record by accidently recording over the 8 track tape. He replaced with Dj Chris kilmore, another phenomenal turntablist that was part of the Philadelphia based scratch crew "the Jedi knights" and had also worked with the likes of bands such as Primer 55 and Grüvis malt.
Great record. I find it amusing how you could ask 10 different Incubus fans what their favorite Incubus album is, and you might get 10 different answers. On this album alone, you can probably already hear the Mike Patton influence on Brandon Boyd's voice. My fav. tracks on this one are Redefine, Idiot Box, Glass, Nebula, screw it- the entire thing is good. It's just a banger.
the production on that album was great. back when real turntables were an instrument, everyone check out the Invisible scratch pickles, real DJing is an art
This is a great album, but I personally enjoy the make yourself album alot more, Incubus is very underrated, they were massive back in the early 2000s but it's like they've been forgotten.
What do you mean they’ve been forgotten? They are still touring and creating music! Each album as original and just as incredible than the last. Saw them a few times in March and looking forward to the beginning of their next tour here soon! See if they’re coming to city near you bro!
@@benjaminridge8794 when I say they're forgotten I mean as in, They're not as popular as they once were, when people talk about rock and nu metal bands from early 2000s, it's rare to hear there name now, I've seen Incubus 3 times between 99 and 2004, I'm not saying there music has gotten worse, I just don't think they get the recognition they deserve
Incubus is one of my favorite bands. Science is definitely my favorite album by them. They never did another quite like this but I definitely love each of the next 3 albums and there's a couple good ones after that. Guitarist Mike Einzinger has always been an influence. He always uses really interesting chord voicings and has a legendary pedalboard. He's the reason I bought the Boss Super Phaser. Incubus was never as heavy as Science going forward. Some people would use the term sell out. Don't think that's fair. They made some classic alternative rock songs.
Yeah sell out would be a dumb thing thing to say. They had two poppy songs on science and make yourself. Out from under and make yourself has screaming vocals. Still a lot of experimentation on the following albums but different. Repeating gets boring anyways
I fucking love Incubus. I think Morning View is one of the best records I've heard. Whenever I drive to the beach I always put it on because of the album's connection to the water.
This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for!😁 shroom era Incubus is my absolute favorite! Its like Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers had a baby, and that baby grew up listening to Beastie Boys Nine Inch Nails and Helmet.. or something 😆 sorta don’t know where I was goin with that...but all I know is I knew you would love it🤙🏻
Funk, jazz, techno, metal, hip hop... all in one place! I remember the first time I listened to this album. It didn't click with me, but the hook that made me come back to it were the merge of weird space sounds (as i remember calling them atm) and the easy to follow rythms. After that I couldn't stop listening to it cause it got better with each listen. Discovering new sound and styles became a great task for me and I still find some new ones in it. How each member bring something to the table is remarkable for me. I like the production in general and how lound the turntables are, in fact, this is the only full lengh album that features dj lyfe. A lot of the dj samples you hear come from a children's book. Looking forward for you to listen to their other material. Each album it's different!
@@mollyesanborn btw, that "springy effect" at the end of new skin it's called "phaser". Mike is really well known by using that effect in some weird but awesome ways.
I've seen them live twice, they sound just as good live as they do in studio which is rare. Brandon Boyd's voice is amazing *shameless flirtation - Molly you are very cute *
Incubus is my favorite band and science is the most solid album imo! You can thank the band for the sub bc that's why it came up on my feed. Incubus is truly one of a kind and grooves very well
Definitely their album that got them out there, but Make Yourself was the breakout album! Love that album! Morning View is noteworthy, but I would have to say I think I like A Crow Left of the Murder more. Excited you are reviewing these guys, another favorite band of mine. Should definitely listen to their 3 tracks they made for the stealth soundtrack. If you do not review those you should at least listen to them, great songs!
Hell yeah this album is so dope...shame incubus after make yourself kind of left out some of the wonky wacky stuff...not saying it's not good but this shit was awesome On this page you see a little girl giggling at a hippopotamus...I wonder why? Lol classic
I listened to a few of their other albums before this one. SCIENCE is when they really started changing into a more mainstream, polished nu metal band. Much different than Fungus Amongus. You can hear the RHCP influences on their early work. I gave this CD to my brother in law who kept in his work vehicle CD player for months. That's all he listened to haha. Energetic is definitely the word to describe this. They got more melodic later on, but this one was just a get up and go album. Gotta love when the DJ's in the nu metal raprock bands add more than what sounds like scratch sounds. Great band that's still going strong. Love Incubus even with their newer experimental stuff
Calgone (pronounced Cal Gone) was an old detergent brand if I'm not mistaken. I remember my parents saying their tagline as a joke when I was little; "Calgone take me away". I didn't get it.
Nice album although all over the place for my taste, their next one "Make yourself" on the other hand it's a much more focused effort leaning strongly into the alt/nu metal imo. After that they hit it big with Morning view which was their more accessible one and then totally lost me after that, sadly. You should totally check out their discog tho. Edit: that thumbnail 👀👌
